KYLE MCCARTER ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR CONGRESS SECURING FREEDOM, LIBERTY AND OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FUTURE

ESTION U Q OF THE

Itʼs that time of year for scary movies. Which one is your favorite? Peggy Johnson

“Washington is broken and after 20 years in office our representative has b ecome par t of the problem. I have the energy, ideas, and a proven track record as a reformer in Illinois to go to DC and make a difference” said McCarter. Saying it’s time for new leadership to restore, renew and recapture the bright promise of America, State Senator Kyle McCarter of Lebanon announced Wednesday his intention to run for the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the 15th District of Illinois. “This is a very conservative district that believes we should protect life; that believes in the Second Amendment, and believes in limited government and free market principles of

economic opportunity for all,” said McCarter. “Ronald Reagan described the heart of American conservatism as, ‘The common sense and common decency of ordinary men and women, working out their own lives in their own way.’ That’s also the heart of the 15th District.” McCarter, who has served in the Illinois Senate since 2009, said the promise of America has been undermined in recent years by policies and practices that fight against and undermine traditional values. He said it’s time to turn around Washington. “What we have witnessed in recent years is not how our country was designed to work,” said McCarter. “The burdens of government have grown¸

in spite of the opposition by a majority of Americans. The federal government has imposed thousands of new rules and regulations, and billions of dollars in new taxes. It has overstepped its bounds and has done so without our consent. Of all the places in Illinois, the place that should have the loudest, strongest voice in Washington is the 15th District, but I don’t see that happening. Respectively, 20 years is enough. It’s time that someone like myself step up and really defend the people of this district.” McCarter likened the challenging of a long-time incumbent in the race to David versus Goliath, but he said a tough campaign is worth the struggle because the end result will

be good for families and communities, and good for businesses and the economy. “If the last 8 years have showed us anything, it’s showed us we need new blood in Washington,” said McCarter. “We need to ‘Turnaround Washington.’ We need people who think differently, who haven’t given up on the traditional American principles and qualities that made our nation great. We need leaders with energy who are not in Washington to make a career of the Capital, but who are working to improve the lives of citizens today, and to secure a bright, promising and hopeful future for generations to come.” McCarter said Freedom and Liberty for today and tomorrow includes vigilance and perseverance. 40 Commerce Lane, Lebanon, IL 62264 Authorized and Paid for by Kyle McCarter for Congress “Unlike what has been happening in recent years, I refuse to compromise on Freedom and Liberty, said McCarter. “We need to return to the traditional American principles that are the bedrock foundation upon which our nation was built.” McCarter said the nation’s founding documents give the people unique power and authority because the Freedom and Liberty the documents detail are recognized as coming from the “Creator.” McCarter said rights come from God; they are not given to us by the government, which means the people are in charge of their destiny, not a group of individuals in Washington D.C. “If you feel you have been ignored by Washington; if you feel no one has been fighting for you or will give voice to your concerns and hopes for the future, then walk with me and run with me to win this race,” said McCarter. STORE HOURS MON. - THURS. 9 A.M. TO 5:30 P.M. FRIDAY 9 A.M. - 7 P.M. SATURDAYS 9 A.M. - 5 P.M.

Last Tuesday evening the spotlight was on the Democrats. CNN hosted the first Presidential Democratic Debate. The stage was set with only five candidates. The questions came from everyday Americans like you and me across the country while Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Clinton, Martin O'Malley, Bernie Sanders and Jim Webb took to the stage. After the national anthem they were off and running. With Hillary front and center, each candidate introduced themselves starting with Chafee (the metric man) with 30 years of public service. Next up Jim Webb who is a Vietnam veteran, a senator, a father and a husband. O'Malley, a lifelong Democrat with 15 years as an executive leader and former mayor of Baltimore, Maryland. Sanders, an admitted socialist, stressed the need for climate change and also pointed out our country has more people in jail than any other country in the world. His motto: "Let's take back our government" — a perfect opportunity for him to say Hillary Clinton is part of the current big government regime. Then it was Clinton's turn. She said she was proud to serve as first lady and of course talked about being a grandmother of a 1 year old. The questions started with Hillary's flip flops, especially addressing TPP, a trade agreement that she said, "would be the gold standard" and now she's against it. She took a stab at answering but never did. By the end of the evening my mind had not changed about Hillary. If you want more of the same, she's your girl, and when she pointed out we had handled Libya well, it was a dead give away she doesn't have a clue. As per Sanders, second in the Democratic current polls, his points were we should rob from the rich (kill that goose that lays the golden egg) and give to the

poor. Yay! More free phones! And to round it up he was a conscientious objector and refused to go to Vietnam, but I expected no more from him! Frankly, in my opinion credibility is still a huge issue with Hillary. Sanders has, I believe, been honest, but I simply can't agree with his beliefs and I don't see him as presidential material. As per the rest? They aren't going anywhere except home! I personally don't like Donald Trump but he could beat anyone of the gang of 5 on the stage last Tuesday evening. But I'll leave you with a thought. If Joe Biden steps in, we're looking at a completely different story. Rumor has it we'll know soon. Up next, Obama flip flops on militar y action in Afghanistan. A major happening last week — a flip flop I agree with — at this time the U.S. has 9,800 troops in Afghanistan. They will remain through 2016. After that 5,500 will be there into 2017. This is a major shift in Obama's policy to bring all troops home by the end of 2016 with only a small embassy-based force left behind. Is he doing the right thing? All you have to do is remember the premature withdrawal of troops in Iraq and look what followed. Going back to the Democratic Presidential candidates... I found it interesting that last Thursday, leading Democratic candidates were silent about Obama's decision and that includes Hillary Clinton who served as Obama's Secretary of State. And last but not least, looking back, I remember a big to-do when V.P. Dick Cheney accidentally shot a friend while dove hunting. You couldn't find a newspaper, radio station or TV station that didn't beat it to

death. So with the current gunhostile administration we have in the White House, I would think it would be headline news that one of Barack Obama's then White House staffers Barvetta Singletary was arrested after allegedly firing a gun at her cop boyfriend during a domestic dispute. Now, granted, Barvetta Singletary, a lower level White House staffer, is no VP, so wouldn't grab as many headlines, but I don't recall reading or hearing about this late August incident at all. Either way, Ms. Singletary won't help advance her (former) boss's crusade against gun violence. It didn't take long for her to resign her $125,000 a year job last month. With the chummy bedfellows the current administration and the major liberal news outlets have become over the years, maybe I shouldn't be surprised which gun-related incident got more news coverage. The weapon of choice was a .40 caliber Glock 23 service weapon. A closing thought: looking back at both the Republican and Democratic debates, I would have liked to hear just one candidate in their opening remarks about who they are say "I'm a Christian." Looking at the corruption in the political arena — the mass shootings, some openly targeting Christians, it's apparent to me Christianity is under siege in America and the breakdown of the American Family is one of the biggest problems! Prepare Crumb Topping: In small bowl, combine walnuts, cinnamon and sugar. Set aside. Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease 13"x9" baking pan. In large bowl, with electric mixer at medium speed, cream butter and 2/3 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low and gradually beat in flour, sour cream, eggs, baking powder, soda and vanilla. With mixer at medium speed, beat batter until light and fluffy, occasionally scraping side of bowl with rubber spatula. Spread half the batter in greased pan. Sprinkle with half the crumb topping. Spoon dollops of remaining batter on top; carefully spread to an even layer. Sprinkle top with remaining crumb topping. Bake coffee cake 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool cake completely in pan on wire rack. To serve, cut cake into squares. Makes about 12 servings.

Hurry-up Caramel Buns 1 (1 lb.) loaf frozen bread dough 1 cup firmly packed light-brown sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) plus 3 T. butter or margarine, softened

1/4 cup water 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts 2 T. granulated sugar 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon

Allow frozen bread dough to thaw following package directions. To make buns' sticky topping, combine brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, and water in 1-quart saucepan. Heat to boiling over medium heat and allow to boil 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Reduce heat slightly if sugar syrup boils up too high. Pour hot syrup into 10" round baking pan. Sprinkle 1/2 cup nuts evenly over syrup. On lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 14"x 9" rectangle. Spread with remaining 3 T. butter. In cup, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle over buttered dough. Sprinkle dough with remaining 1/2 cup nuts. Starting from one long side, roll dough up, jelly-roll style, pinching to seal outside edge. Cut roll into 12 slices and arrange these evenly over topping in pan. (Do not worry about small gaps between rolls.) Cover buns with clean cloth. Let rise in warm place, away from drafts, until double in size, 40 to 60 minutes. Heat oven to 350°F. Bake buns 30 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes, then invert onto platter. Makes 1 dozen. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

For the Glory of God (Part II) One of the greatest miracles of Jesus’ earthly ministry was the raising of his friend Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb. Why, after hearing of Lazarus’ sickness, did Jesus wait two more days before going to him? Jesus gave us the answer, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it. (John 11:4) God is worthy of all glory and honor. Followers of Christ are to live to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14) Jesus taught us to conclude the Lord’s Prayer with this phrase, “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (Matthew 6:13) In part 1 we looked at four ways to bring glory to God found in John 11. In part 2 we are looking at four more ways to bring glory to God in John 11. BEING A FRIEND OF GOD BRINGS GLORY TO GOD. “These things he said, and after that he said to them, ‘Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go

1. Is the book of Levi in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Proverbs 29, what happens when the wicked have authority? People mourn, Heavens blackened, Masses kill, Taxes abound 3. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall" do

that I may wake him up.’” (John 11:11) Jesus called Lazarus “friend”. Can you imagine being a friend of the Son of God? In John 15 Jesus called his followers friends. We are told how to be a friend of Jesus. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are my friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants but friends . . . But I have chosen you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” (John 15:7-17) As we walk in his love, we are his friends and our lives bring him glory. BELIEVING AND LIVING IN CHRIST BRINGS GOD GLORY. Martha was troubled, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21-22) How many times do we ask God why? Jesus assured her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who

believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:24-25) Jesus gave us two keys in this verse to bring God glory; to live and believe in Christ. Like Martha, have you confessed your belief in Christ? (John 11:40) PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT BRINGS GLORY TO GOD. When Jesus saw the grieving people weeping with Mary and Martha, we see his heart, “He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.” (John 11:33) and “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35-36) We can also pray in the Spirit and bring glory to God. (Romans 8:2627) In Jesus’ last priestly prayer, He prayed that the Father would be glorified in him and that he would be glorified in his followers. (John 17:6-10) Pray that Jesus would be glorified in and through you.

‘Lazarus, come forth!’ And he who had died came out, bound hand and foot . . . Jesus said, ‘Loose him and let him go.’” (John 11:41-44) The raising of Lazarus brought many to faith in Christ. Multitudes are still experiencing resurrection miracles of death unto life, darkness into light. Only Jesus can give life to the dead. Believe God for resurrection miracles that will bring glory to God. Jesus commanded that Lazarus be loosed from his grave clothes. They have the smell of death. It is our part to throw them aside and walk in newness of life. (II Corinthians 5:17) Andre Crouch wrote and sang, “To God be the glory for the things he has done. With his blood he has saved me. With his power he has raised me. To God be the glory, for the things he has done.” Give glory to God.

RESURRECTION MIRACLES BRING GLORY TO GOD. Jesus came to the tomb where Lazarus was. He told them to roll the stone away. “He cried with a loud voice,

Washington County Animal Control’s ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some flashes of Aries ire might erupt as you confront an unusually bewildering situation. But you should be able to keep your temper under control as you work through it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That marriage ‘twixt the arts and practicality that Taureans excel at once again highlights your enjoyment of much of the week. However, you need to watch any sudden urge to splurge. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Even with all the plusses apparently outweighing the minuses, you still might want to defer an important decision to make sure you have all the facts you need. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) One or two problems might threaten to derail otherwise smoothly running situations at work or at home. But a few wellplaced words should help get things back on track quickly. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be a good time for all you Leos and Leonas in the spotlight to open your generous Lion’s hearts and share the glory with those who helped you accomplish so much along the way. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might want to get advice from someone who’s been there and knows these situations better than you do, before investing time or money (or both) in a questionable matter. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be careful how you handle a workplace matter that seems out of place in the

schedule you’ve prepared. Before you act, one way or another, find out who set it up and why. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your entertainment aspect is strong this week. Besides providing a wonderful break from everyday obligations, sharing fun times brings you closer to those you care for. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Having a weekend fun fest? Your friend or relative who’s down in the emotional dumps could perk up if you find a way to include him or her in your plans. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) If you’re in one of those “the Goat knows best” periods, you might want to ease up and try listening to what others have to say. You could learn something. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new challenge is getting closer, and you should be out there now showing facts and figures to potential allies to help persuade them to rally to your support. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a head start on holiday plans could help free up some time later to spend on other projects. Meanwhile, a colleague has some ideas that you might find worth discussing.
