1 cup halved seedless grapes 2 cups cider 1/4 cup apple wine Salt, pepper, sage, and thyme to taste

Preheat oven to 325°F. Remove giblets from turkey and reserve for another use. Rinse turkey and pat dry with paper towels. Stuff body and neck cavities of turkey with apples and grapes. Arrange turkey breast side up in shallow roasting pan. Pour 2 cups cider over turkey. Roast turkey at 325°F for 3½ to 4 hours until thermometer inserted in thickest part of thigh registers 180°F, basting every 30 minutes with pan juices. When turkey is as brown as desired, tent turkey with foil to prevent over browning. Remove turkey to warm platter, reserving pan juices. With foil tent on turkey, let stand 15 minutes before carving. While turkey is standing, strain pan drippings. Skim off fat. Add enough broth to drippings to measure 2¼ cups. Pour back into roasting pan. In small bowl whisk together flour and 1 cup broth until smooth. Strain into pan drippings. Whisk to blend. Whisk in wine. Season to taste with salt, pepper, sage, and thyme. Set roasting pan over 2 burners. Cook gravy over medium high heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and boiling. Strain into serving dish. Carve turkey and serve with gravy. Yield: 8 servings.

What a bumpy ride last week! • Boehner is out, Ryan is in • U.S. boots on the ground in Syria • Jeb! or Jeb? • CNBC bad for extreme liberals, good for GOP Last week marked the end of Speaker of the House John Boehner's reign as he stepped aside for the new Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan. But not before Boehner "cleaned the barn" for Ryan, including the huge, two-year deal struck between Obama and Congressional leaders from both parties. The agreement — approved by 266 to 167 in the House — will raise the government's borrowing limit through early 2017, avoiding a default just days away. "A solid piece of legislation," declared outgoing Speaker John Boehner. Ryan — a Republican from Wisconsin and former running mate to Mitt Romney in the 2012 Presidential race — became the 54th Speaker, one of the toughest jobs in America. Addressing both parties, he stated, "We need to wipe the slate clean and start the process over again." He promised to encourage the House of Representatives to work together as well as unify the Republican Party. That's a tall order considering the divide of establishement versus outsiders in the party, Paul Ryan, in my opinion, believes in offering the American people an agenda, something we haven't had in a long time. On to U.S. boots on the ground in Syria. One year ago Obama said, "The notion the U.S. should be putting boots on the ground ... would be a huge mistake." Backing up to his promise as far back as 2008

of, "NO new boots on the ground," this announcement is a total change in tactics. Granted, the order is for 50 U.S. troops to go to Syria, but once it starts, where does it stop? This is not good news for a war weary country, especially one led by a President that admits he has no strategy! So what has caused the change of heart? Is it to help stabilize Syria? Is it to help avoid the mistakes he made in Iraq when he should have maintained five to ten thousand troops in Iraq (which would have had a totally different outcome)? Is it the beginning of the end of Assad? And with this thought, I can't help but look back at Libya and the decapitation of the Libyan government, Obama's and Hillary's mess. Will history repeat itself? Whatever, you can be assured it will be the next President's mess to clean up. On to the Bush Watch: Jeb! or Jeb? As Meet the Press pointed out on Sunday morning, there is no doubt Jeb is in trouble. His new slogan is "Jeb Can Fix It!" In my opinion, he needs to start by fixing himself! He made it clear a few weeks ago he had plenty of cool things to do; maybe it's time for him to go and do them. I think the only good thing about his candidacy for President is it's brought Papa Bush back to life! And that's a good thing. But on the flip side, in last Wednesday night's GOP debate, the comment about fantasy football directed to Jeb Bush by a less than fair and balanced moderator was completely out of line. But the entire GOP debate that evening was nothing but

"gotcha" and biased questions instead of questions addressing the real issues the American people care about! Welcome to extreme liberal media. The tone of the debate was full of hostility towards the candidates, a real train wreck. The three moderators were too occupied with making nasty comments and asking questions designed to pit one candidate against the other, as well as accusing Ben Carson of being involved in a company he had no involvement in, and comparing Donald Trump's campaign to a comic book campaign. The night was full of innuendos and mean-spirited questions and comments. As far as I'm concerned, CNBC is as bad as media gets. At this time, the debate scheduled for NBC has been suspended, and justifiably so! The winner of the night, in my opinion, was Marco Rubio. But in closing, say what you will. Each of these candidates did very well considering what they had to deal with, three biased and unprofessional moderators! And on their behalf, not one of the Republican candidates are being investigated by the FBI. These three moderators can't say that about their girl under investigation right now. None other than their Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton. But in closing, I'll take Jeb Bush over Hillary Clinton any day of the week! To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Defeating the Devil Many people believe that the devil is only a myth. But Jesus took the devil seriously. “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (I John 3:8) Jesus gave the devil’s job description, “The thief does not come except to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) God’s Word describes the devil as our adversary, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him steadfast in the faith.” (I Peter 5:7-9) Believers have been given all the spiritual armor and weapons they need to defeat the devil’s attacks. (Ephesians 6:1-18) Use these seven weapons to defeat the devil. THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT which is the Word of God is a mighty weapon that will defeat the devil. (Ephe-

sians 6:7) It is sharper than a two-edged sword. The Holy Spirit quickens and empowers God’s Word. He is called the Spirit of truth. Satan is the father of lies. He did not abide in the truth. Jesus said, “and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32) God’s Word is the gospel truth. Jesus was tempted by the devil on the mountain for 40 days. For each temptation Jesus used the Sword of the Spirit on the devil — the Word of God. Jesus would quote scripture by saying, “It is written, Satan.” (Matthew 4:1-11) Satan cannot abide the truth of God’s Word. THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB will enable you to be an overcomer. The devil is called “the accuser of the brethren.” We are given the most p owerful spiritual weapon to overcome him, “They overcame him by the blood of the

Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” (Revelation 12:11) The blood of Christ is traced from Genesis to Revelation. Only the blood of Jesus can make atonement for sin and defeat the devil’s claims. Testify to its power in your life. RESIST THE DEVIL. “Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) Peter tells us to resist him steadfast in the faith. (I Peter 5:8-9) What an effect, “He will flee from you.” REPENT AND RENOUNCE ALL THE DEVIL’S WORKS and any past involvement with sin, Satan, or the occult. Involvement in the realm of darkness opens a gate for the devil. Repent and renounce it in Jesus’ name. PUT ON THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD. No soldier would go into battle without putting on the full armor and weapons issued to him. God has given believers all they need to defeat the devil. (Ephesians 6:1-18) P R AY I N T H E SPIRIT. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.”

(Ephesians 6:18; Jude 20) Prayer keeps you full of God and the devil cannot penetrate the force field of the Holy Spirit in and around you. During Halloween we put up a sign in our front yard that says, “THE ONLY GHOST THAT LIVES IN THIS HOUSE IS THE HOLY GHOST.” Prayer will keep you filled with the Spirit and Satan cannot touch you. SPEAK BOLDLY. Paul asked believers to pray for him so that he could boldly speak God’s Word. (Ephesians 6:20) Boldly resist the devil in faith and he will flee from you. At the cross Jesus defeated the devil by His death and resurrection. Recently I came across this post on my Facebook, “Satan was defeated by Christ at the cross, but he’s seeking you as a consolation prize.” You can defeat the devil by using these mighty weapons of God “For we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:32) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

GIFTS TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY If a friend or family member has expressed a desire to slim down in the new year, the following items can make great holiday gifts that help your loved ones get a head start on their weight loss goals. Yoga Mat and DVD Yoga has grown increasingly popular in recent years. According to a survey from the National Institutes of Health, nearly 10 percent of adults in the United States participated in yoga in 2012, up from 5 percent in 2002. Yoga is a great way to relieve stress and get in shape, and it can help men and women feel more flexible. That increased flexibility can help men and women looking to lose weight, making a yoga mat and DVD an ideal fitness gift. Such gifts are even better for men and women who may feel intimidated by exercising after a long layoff, as they can dust off the cobwebs from the comforts of their own homes. Offer to

come over and show them some basic moves and help them in their first few sessions if you’re already familiar with yoga. Swimming Lessons Many people learn to swim as children, but a refresher course can help loved ones who have not dipped their toes in any water in recent years. Such lessons also may ignite (or reignite) a passion for swimming, which is a wonderful exercise that can promote weight loss and cardiovascular health while helping men and women de velop toned muscles. Find a local swim club or gym that offers lessons, and go along for the first few lessons to help calm any nerves your loved one might have. Healthy Cookbook Effective, long-term weight loss requires both diet and exercise. A cookbook full of healthy recipes can prove an invaluable resource for men and women who recognize the

role healthy foods play in losing weight and keeping the weight off. Many adults cite a lack of time as the primary reason they eat unhealthy foods, so look for a cookbook that offers healthy recipes that can be cooked up quick. Fitness Tracker Fitness trackers come in many shapes and sizes, but many allow users to count their steps and track the distances they travel in a typical day. More advanced models may even help men and women track the amount of calories they’ve consumed, both on a daily basis and over time. Such devices can prove motivational to men and women looking to lose weight, providing detailed daily information they can use to track and see their progress. Gifts that aim to help men and women looking to lose weight can pay dividends long after the season has come and gone.

SCRUB THE AIR INSIDE YOUR HOME AND BREATHE EASIER WITH THESE TIPS Home should be your refuge, the place where you feel safest and can breathe easy. But what if the air inside your home is stuffy, stale or just downright dirty? Poor indoor air quality is common in American households, and if your home has bad air, it could be affecting your health. Indoor pollutant levels can be significantly higher than outdoor levels, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. What's more, the EPA notes, because most homes have multiple sources of indoor air pollution, the cumulative effect of all that pollution can lead to health problems. The problems may show up immediately or take years to emerge, the EPA says, and can include respiratory problems, eye and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. In observance of National Indoor Air Quality Month this October, here are some common sources of indoor air pollution and what you can do to improve the air inside your home: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Thousands of products give off VOCs, and the concentration of VOCs can be up to 10 times higher indoors than outside, the EPA says. Inside the home, paint, furniture and cleaning supplies are among the top sources of VOCs. To reduce the presence of VOCs in your home, choose low- or no-VOC paints for home improvement projects. If you've recently purchased furniture or had new carpeting installed, be sure to use good ventilation — open windows and run ventilation fans to help evacuate VOCs. Choose cleansers made from organic formulations, rather than chemicals.

Dust Dust and dirt in your home don't just look bad, they can cause respiratory and eye irritation, and make certain conditions - like asthma and allergies - even worse. The "dust" in your home contains a host of irritants besides simple dirt, including animal dander and hair, dust mites, insect debris, pollen, spores and more. The EPA says keeping your house clean can help reduce biological contaminants like these. Vacuuming is one of the most effective ways to reduce dust and dirt in your home, but be aware that some vacuums like upright or portable vacuums may actually increase the amount of dust and allergens in the air. Vacuums can pull dust off the floor and exhaust it back into the air. Even uprights with HEPA filters can't capture and retain all pollutants. A central vacuum system can do a better job of removing contaminants from your home. Central vacuums capture debris and other micro-particles and exhaust them directly outside your home, rather than recirculating dust and dirt back into the indoor air. By eliminating 99.97 percent of micro particles, the central vacuum helps improve indoor air quality. The system can be installed in virtually any style or age home, and is easy to use and maintain. Fumes A number of appliances in your home can give off noxious fumes like carbon monoxide, from a malfunctioning gas log fireplace or a kerosene space heater to a faulty central furnace. Depending on the kind of emission, these fumes can cause illness and even be lethal.

11

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

To minimize risks, keep all gas appliances in good repair. Have furnaces, heaters and

fireplaces inspected at least once a year by a professional and be sure any appliance that burns fuel, such as a gas dryer or stove, properly vents outside the home. Install a carbon monoxide detector in

your home; many states, counties and municipalities now require them in new construction. From installing a central vacuum system and CO detector to avoiding products that

produce harmful emissions, you can do a lot to improve the quality of the air inside your home. A few precautions can help ensure everyone breathes easier and stays healthy. (BPT)

HOW TO SHOW APPRECIATION FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL Military personnel are unsung heroes whose sacrifices for their country make it possible for hundreds of millions of people to enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe do not have. In recognition of those sacrifices, many people want to show their appreciation to both active and retired servicemen and women. Fortunately, there are many ways to do just that. Pitch in at Home According to the United States Department of Defense, the United States military currently deploys active duty personnel in nearly 150 countries. Many of those troops are separated from their families for months at a time, and that separation can make things difficult for their loved ones back home. If a neighbor’s spouse is deployed over-

seas, offer to help around the house. Whether it’s mowing their lawn, dropping their kids off at school or inviting the whole family over for dinner one night each week, such gestures can go a long way toward easing the burden faced by spouses of deployed military personnel. Send Gifts to Active Personnel Servicemen and women on active duty do not enjoy many of the luxuries that tend to be taken for granted back home. But men and women who want to show their appreciation can send care packages to active personnel serving overseas. An organization such as Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude.com), which to date has sent nearly 1.3 million care packages to active personnel, sends care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, personal hygiene products and handmade items. This provides active personnel a taste of home while also letting them know their extraordinary efforts are appreciated and not forgotten. Volunteer at a Veterans Hospital Unfortunately, many servicemen and women return home from their deployments with injuries or health conditions that require long-term care. By volunteering at veteran hospitals, men and women can help veterans overcome their injuries and provide much-needed help to staff at hospitals that could use a helping hand. Visit volunteer.va.gov for more information. Make a Financial Donation For those who want to support servicemen and women but don’t have

much free time to do so, financial donations can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of active and retired military personnel. Many programs work with veterans to improve their quality of life, and such organizations rely heavily on financial donations to make their missions a reality. The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject. org), for example, works to honor and empower servicemen and women who incurred physical or mental injuries or illnesses on or after September 11, 2001. The organization relies on

the generosity of individuals who want to help wounded military personnel overcome their injuries and illnesses. Based on audited financial statements of the 2014 fiscal ending on September 30, 2014, 80.6 percent of total expenditures went to services and programs catering to wounded military personnel and their families, assuring prospective donors that their donations will go toward helping those in need. There are many ways that civilians can express their gratitude to active and retired military personnel.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Deciding to work out that pesky problem (even though you might have been bored, bored, bored with it) should be paying off right about now. Expect to hear some very welcome news very soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Unexpected news might cause you to rethink a previous conclusion. Don’t be bullheaded and try to bluff it out. Make the needed change, and then take a bow for your objectivity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Money matters should be considered as you continue to work out your holiday plans. This is a good time to scout out discounts before demand for them outstrips their availability. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A calm period early in the week helps you complete most, if not all, of your unfinished tasks. A new project appears by midweek, and this one could carry some big career potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Positive results from recent ventures continue to pump up those self-esteem levels, making you Fabulous Felines feel you can tackle any challenge anyone wants to throw at you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Family and friends might feel neglected because of your almost total focus on a project. Try to rework your schedule so you can have time for both your loved ones and your work. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t be surprised if you suddenly

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

hear from someone from your past who wants to contact you about the possibility of renewing a long-dormant (if not dead) relationship. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to check over what went right and what went wrong with recent efforts. This can provide valuable lessons for projects that will be coming up soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Dealing with people who feel they’re always right about everything might be a problem for some. But the savvy Archer should be able to deflate their oversize egos. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This week favors a balance between the demands of your work and your need for fun timeouts. Taking breaks helps restore and keep your energy levels high. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There could be an occasional setback in what you’re working on. But look at them as lessons on how to do better as you move along. More supporters turn up to cheer you on. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Although a more positive aspect influences this week’s course, you still need to be sure that those who will work with you have no reason to work against you. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in keeping your promises. It’s not always easy to do, but somehow you do it. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
