The question was met with a wince of pain that quickly metamorphosed into a look of utter disbelief and disdain. "Now why on Earth would we ever want to do that?" was the reply. It wasn't the first time my ol' pardner, the late, great Bill Grigsby, the Kansas City announcer best known for being the longtime voice of the Chiefs and one of the first announcers of the Super Bowl, shot me down. At the time we collaborated on a community newspaper in Kansas City, and I had the swell idea to start a "Royals Review" column to augment our sports section. "Kid," he said to me, "I paid my dues covering bad

baseball when I called the Kansas City A's for Charlie O'Finley, and I wouldn't even take the time to piss on that [man's] grave." "Why not, Bill?" I asked. This time he shot me a look of annoyance. "Because the line is always too damn long!" Good ol' Grigs ... I set 'em up and he'd knock 'em down. Fine, I said, I'd cover the lousy games myself. But then the Royals hired Ned Yost. He had flamed out as a catcher in the big leagues, but I knew him as the bullpen coach for the dynastic Braves of the '90s. He was mistreated badly in Milwaukee, and now he had a second chance. Yost was almost universally panned from the start for the way he handled the pitching staff. He stayed the course. He made players change positions. Alex Gordon, who looked like a pretty good third baseman, would learn to play left field from scratch. Again, he was

1. Who was the first National League shortstop to twice hit 20 or more home runs in a season? 2. Two Boston Red Sox pitchers threw no-hitters in 1962. Name them. 3. Who was the last Tampa Bay quarterback to rush for two TDs in a game before Josh McCown in 2014?

Wednesday, November 25, 2015 panned. And then, whether it was his idea or not, the Royals shook George Brett awake from his front-office desk and made him the team's interim batting coach. Ask the Royals core players — Moustakas, Gordon, Hosmer, Cain — what it meant to have a living legend and a guy who knew nothing but how to compete to win all the time on the bench, on road trips, on flights, presumably in bars, with them during his short reign. Then they called these anti-moneyball Royals and their coach stupid for their style of play. Duh? Didn't they know they were not supposed to be aggressive at the plate anymore? That they shouldn't be swinging all the time? That fans wanted on-base percentages and walks? That stealing bases often hurt teams more than they helped? Swinging at the first pitch? No bonafide home-run

hitters? Sacrilege! Challenging hitters with relievers who were always rested and available because Yost was too stubborn to deviate from his plan to use one pitcher for his one designated inning and telling him to throw 1,000-mph fastballs straight down the pipe to challenge the other team's hitters to put the ball in play due to his superior defensive team? Hummm ... on second thought, that sort of made sense, didn't it? Well Grigs, ol' pardner, we may never have got to see these games together but in the long run, it turned out more than just a little bit OK for those that stuck by this franchise, that is, the Royal We. Congratulations, Kansas City. You're a helluva town.

MOVIE DIRECTOR DAN STEADMAN VISITS RLC

HELPING CUSTOMERS FIND THE RIGHT CAR FOR OVER 30 YEARS!

BY JUSTIN WOMACK, RLC CLOCKTOWER CHRONICLE STAFFWRITER

Film producer and director Dan Steadman dropped by the RLC Theater Monday afternoon to speak with Tracey Webb's acting class. His lecture covered the business of acting, writing and everything in between. Steadman is an independent film producer and director who has just recently finished his latest film “Proximity. The movie includes a small role featuring St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright in his first-ever comedic role on film. It is sure to be a nice treat for all of the Cardinals fans in the area. “It was very cool. He’s i n t o c o m e d y, s a i d Steadman about Wainwright. “We gave him a comedic role that we thought would be very different for him.  Steadman started off working in television all over the country from Michigan to Florida and California. He recently worked his way back to the Midwest, doing independent feature films such as “Belleville, and now “Proximity — filmed mostly in the Centralia area. Steadman says he really enjoys working with people from the Midwest. “After they watch I want people to say, ‘Yeah that’s me. That’s the Midwest. That's my take on things, you know? ... They're all just people and they really are actors from the Midwest. We did cast from here and members of our crew are from here as well. He hopes audiences connect with the characters of “Proximity and find them relatable. Steadman’s passion for truth echoes throughout his writing. “It's not like I’m writing these characters to be role models, he said. “I just want people to see truth in it. He encouraged students in the theatre class to tell their own stories. He also offered ideas on getting started and furthering themselves in the film business. He touched on all sorts of topics from writing to editing and acting, and the process of selecting his own actors and crew members. Steadman said he was happy to come and be able to talk with the students at

RLC and that he was excited to find even more creative minds in the Southern Illinois area. “I hope the college students will be a part of our red carpet premiere in December,â€? he said. “I hope they take advantage of all the fun things we will be doing next month.â€? “Proximityâ€? is a romantic comedy. Wainwright plays just one of three men in a love triangle that Ella (Jackie Manker) finds herself in while returning to her mom’s summer cottage in Centralia. Rounding out the triangle is young jazz musician Tyler (Cody Heuer) and wealthy surgeon Dr. Gordon (Bill Finkbiner) in this PG 13style romantic comedy. “I was thrilled Adam Wainwright wanted to be in this, and that he trusted me,â€? says Steadman. “Truthfully, we’ve all seen athletes on shows like Saturday Night Live — unsuccessfully doing comedy. But in the case of Adam, he really pulled up his black dad socks and played a nerdy ex-boyfriend of our lead character, Ella. He was really funny — and it was great to see him outside the role of baseball jock and into the role of a relatable geeky guy.â€? Steadman left Webb’s class with one final thought. “If you are a storyteller of any kind — in any genre — tell personal stories that only you can tell.â€? Webb, RLC’s Theater Professor, was very happy with Steadman’s advice. “It was fantastic! ...He reaffirmed a lot of the lessons I have already taught them, but then he went way beyond what I could teach them because he is IN the business. I wish we had more of this happening.â€? “This is a golden opportunity for the Midwest to show its support for local storytelling,â€? says Steadman. “We are a small business in the community and the only way we can continue to make indie films like this is if audiences come out in droves and financially support “Proximityâ€? this winter. It’s also a great opportunity for businesses to sponsor the red carpets and get their brands in front of a wide audience.â€?

“Proximityâ€? plays at 7 p.m., Dec. 18 and 19 at the Centralia Cultural Society and at noon, Jan. 9 at the L i n c o l n T h e at re i n Belleville. All three events will begin with red carpet Sbmitted Photo arrivals and will be introduced by the director. Dan Steadman Tickets are on sale now at circa87.com. HOLIDAYS POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS TO PETS The holiday season is full of joy. But in the midst of decorating and socializing, pet owners may overlook the needs of their pets. Hectic schedules and homes full of unusual décor can throw pets off-kilter. No pet owner wants their pet to feel uncomfortable or suffer any injuries, so it’s important that owners exercise caution with the following items come the holiday season. Is turkey on the menu

for the family feast? If so, resist the urge to toss some bones and scraps to dogs or cats. Small bones or bone chips can become lodged in the digestive tracts of pets and cause serious injury. If you want to provide your pet with a holiday treat, choose a safer, store-bought bone. The holiday season is a time for celebration. Ensure that these festivities are as safe for pets as they are enjoyable.

Should Mom Let Boy Adopt Pit Bull? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re going to adopt a dog now that I’m 10 years old. I saw a pit bull puppy that I liked at the shelter, but my mom said no, because they’re vicious. My friend said that’s not true. What can I do to persuade her to adopt this dog? — Braedon in Alpharetta, Ga. DEAR BR AED ON: Before I answer, I do want to tell you that your mom has your best interests and safety in mind. And because of the many publicized incidents about pit bull attacks and aggressive behavior, her first reaction is to keep you from getting hurt. Ultimately, she will be the one to approve the type

of dog to adopt. But you can try to sway her opinion with a few myth-busting facts, courtesy of the American Pit Bull Association (americanpitbullfoundation.com/pitbull-myths-debunked): • Pit bulls’ temperament is often better than that of other breeds. In temperament testing (atts.org/ breed-statistics/statisticspage1), American pit bull terriers had a passing rate of 86.8 percent, and other pit bull breeds scored above 82 percent — well above the general dog population’s average of 77 percent. • Pit bulls originally were bred as working dogs and are typically energetic, intelligent and stubborn. Like other working breeds, they do best when socialized early with other dogs and humans, and with lots of training and attention. • Pit bulls’ jaws are not stronger than other dogs, nor do they “lock” when they bite. You and your mom should look for certain

On to the refugees. Obama said, "Shame on us for not taking three-year-old orphans and women." I have a real issue with that statement coming from the leader of a country that's supposed to be concerned about his own country and its citizens. It leaves me questioning his real priorities! The first point to be made is there are a lot more single men, allegedly refugees, than women and three-year-old orphans. And there are a lot of

On to France. French President François Hollande has vowed to make ISIS pay. Hollande has extended the state of emergency in France at least another three months. The mood of the moment demands that action be taken. In remembering 9-11 I recall extensive legislation pushed through Congress right afterwards. Call it what you may, from out of fear to protecting the homeland, but it made sense to me to take extra measures after 9-11 to protect our citizens and country. And with that said, in my opinion, this applies to after the fact in France. Since Friday's evening of terror, French authorities have conducted a number of raids that have netted hundreds of arrests and an arsenal of weapons as well as a raid at a flat last Wednesday that claimed the life of Friday night's terrorist ring leader as well as a female suicide bomber who blew herself up just before another attack could be carried out.

On to New York City. At this time there are a number of propaganda videos by ISIS that have surfaced, one with Times Square being mentioned causing concern. Mayor Bill de Blasio has made it clear, according to MSNBC, that New York is prepared to deal with at least 24 simultaneous attacks. The mayor's response to this particular video was, "There is no credible threat to New York City." I think Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) would disagree with him or anyone who would say there's no credible threat at this time, but I can only hope the mayor is right and doesn't have to deal with one attack, let alone 24.

women that are more than capable of terrorism. Keep in mind, during Wednesday's raid in France, it was a woman that detonated a suicide bomb. It was brought to my attention that to refuse or talk against these refugees is xenophobia. To that individual I say it's true you can't lump all refugees together. No one is saying they're all terrorists, but why would you take any chance! In these uncertain unusual times, it takes extreme measures to keep Americans safe, and to do less than that is total irresponsibility. These 10,000 refugees can not be properly vetted, and for Obama or anyone else to think or suggest they can be is again living in a fantasy world. It takes so few to hurt so many. That's reality. And guess what, the Democrats agree! L ast Thursday the Democrats delivered a stunning blow to Obama's Syrian refugee plan by siding with the Republicans in an effort to effectively stifle the flow of refugees to the U.S. following the French attack. At this time, 30 governors and a number of mayors have come out against accepting refugees in their states, including Gov. Rauner of Illinois, thank God! And with the latest terrorist threat to turn the White House black with fire, it's refreshing to know Democrats do get it even though Obama doesn't. It leaves me wondering who's corner he's really in! He's a man who is willing to gamble with American lives, along with Hillary Clinton, who sounds just like Obama! They endanger the security of this country. Make no mistake, Obama helped create this problem! On to comments by Sen. Kyle McCarter. —————— Congressional candidate and current Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter is calling for a halt in the Obama Administration’s plan to permit thousands of Syrian refugees into the United States.

“In light of the terrorist attacks on Paris, and reports that at least one of the terrorists was a “refugee” from Syria, the Obama Administration should halt Syrian refugees coming to the United States,” said McCarter. McCarter said Illinoisans he hears from are concerned about exactly who the refugees are and he points to a United Nations report estimating the vast majority of refugees from the war-torn areas dominated by terrorism are men. “Eight people were responsible for the 129 murders and the more than 300 critical injuries during the six coordinated attacks in Paris, yet the federal government wants to bring in ten thousand refugees,” said McCarter. “Isis is on record warning they would smuggle in covert jihadists to western countries, hidden among innocent refugees.” McCarter said he supports Governor Bruce Rauner’s decision Monday to temporarily suspend Illinois’ acceptance of new Syrian refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security conducts a full review of its refugee processes. “Given the obvious risks to the United States and our citizens in Illinois, I support this decision for Illinois,” said McCarter. “On behalf of Illinois families, I want to know what assurances our federal government can give us about the legitimacy of those seeking refugee status. We should be concerned. Because of the ongoing war in Syria I don’t believe an accurate vetting of refugees is possible. This puts all of us at great risk.” ——————

What about you? Have you returned to give thanks and glory for all God has done for you? What is the percentage today of people who are really thankful for God, Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and the many other kindnesses shown to them. The leper returned healed and happy, fell on his face at the feet of Jesus, and gave him glory and thanks. Here are a few of the 12 benefits of the power of thanksgiving. THANKSGIVING BRINGS US INTO GOD’S PRESENCE. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and bless his name.” ( Ps a l m 1 0 0 : 4 ; I I Chronicles 5:13) THANKSGIVING GIVES GLORY TO GOD. It expresses appreciation for who He is and what He has done. Appreciative people are happier and healthier people overall, in spirit, soul, and body. Jesus healed the ten lepers but only one returned to thank him. “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on His face at His

feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.” (Luke 17:15-16; Exodus 16:3) THANKSGIVING RELEASES GOD’S POWER, PURPOSE, PEACE, AND PRESENCE IN OUR LIVES AND CIRCUMSTANCES. We are given this key, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (I Thessalonians 5:18) Sometimes thanksgiving is a sacrifice, an act of the will, an act of faith. (Psalm 116:3-4, 17) THANKSGIVING PLEASES GOD. “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” (Hebrews 13:15) THANKSGIVING HELPS RELEASE FAITH. Jesus commended the leper who returned to give thanks. “Arise, go your way, your faith has made you whole.” (Luke 17:19) Are you like the nine lepers who did not return thanks or the Samaritan who gave glory to God? NOW I PROGRE N SS!

CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY BUT

OPEN THIS SUNDAY NOON-4:00 p.m.

Happy Thanksgiving! The holidays are in full swing. It's time to start planning those Christmas get-togethers. Some of my favorite appetizer, soup and snack recipes come from one of my favorite companies, locally owned and operated Country Bob's, for two reasons: 1) Christ is their CEO as he is ours at the Shoppers Weekly, and 2) I as well as my family love Country Bob's products. At the top of the list is wingettes. I can't have a get-together or party without them. And with Christmas just around the corner, let me share the following scripture which the Country Bob's and The Shopper's Weekly staff members believe: "I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ." May God bless and keep you as we celebrate the birth of Christ.

Wingettes

5 lbs. chicken wings 4 cups flour 1/ 4 cup granulated garlic 4 tsp. Country Bob's Seasoning Salt

1/4 tsp. red pepper Oil for deep-frying 1/2 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

Cut off and discard the wing tips and separate each wing into 2 pieces at the joint if desired. Rinse the chicken wings; drain and set aside. Combine the flour, granulated garlic, Country Bob's Seasoning Salt and red pepper in a double thickness paper bag and shake until well mixed. Add the wings, several at a time, and shake until coated. Heat the oil to 350 degrees in a deep fryer. Add the wings, several at a time, to the hot oil and fry for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and place in a large bowl. Add the desired amount of Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and toss lightly until coated. Serve with additional sauce. Yield: variable.

Country Bob's Chip Dip

1 lb. lean ground beef 1 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup chopped onion

Salt to taste 8 oz. cream cheese 1/2 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

Cook the ground beef, green pepper and onion in a skillet until brown and crumbly, stirring frequently. Drain the ground beef mixture and return to the skillet. Season with salt. Chop the cream cheese into pieces and add to the skillet with Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce. Heat over low heat until the cream cheese melts, stirring frequently. Serve hot with favorite sturdy chips. Yield: 4 to 5 cups.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The best way to keep those pre-holiday pressures under control is to just say no to taking on new tasks while you’re still trying to work with a heap of others. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) News means a change might be on its way, but what does it hold? Don’t just ask questions; make sure you get answers you can trust. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Old friends and new have one thing in common: Both your longtime and newly minted pals have much wisdom to impart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With time running out, this is a good time for you to show ‘em all what those Virgo super-organizational skills can do. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Librans and holidays are made

for each other, especially if children and animals are going to be part of your joyous season. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Time is getting too short to allow a spat to taint the holiday season. Restart your relationship and reschedule holiday fun times. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Seeking advice is laudable. You might learn far more than you thought you could. Stay with it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Continuing to assess changes works toward your getting your new project up and ready. Trusted colleagues remain ready to help. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new situation needs a lot of attention, but it’s worth it. This is a very good time for you to involve the arts in what you do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It might be a good idea to slow your hectic holiday pace so that you don’t rush past what -- or who -- you’re hoping to rush toward. BORN THIS WEEK: Others pick up on your confidence in yourself, which inspires them to believe in you and your special gifts. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
