The question was met with a wince of pain that quickly metamorphosed into a look of utter disbelief and disdain. "Now why on Earth would we ever want to do that?" was the reply. It wasn't the first time my ol' pardner, the late, great Bill Grigsby, the Kansas City announcer

best known for being the longtime voice of the Chiefs and one of the first announcers of the Super Bowl, shot me down. At the time we collaborated on a community newspaper in Kansas City, and I had the swell idea to start a "Royals Review" column to augment our sports section. "Kid," he said to me, "I paid my dues covering bad baseball when I called the Kansas City A's for Charlie O'Finley, and I wouldn't even take the time to piss on that [man's] grave." "Why not, Bill?" I asked. This time he shot me a look of annoyance. "Because the line is always too damn long!" Good ol' Grigs ... I set

'em up and he'd knock 'em down. Fine, I said, I'd cover the lousy games myself. But then the Royals hired Ned Yost. He had flamed out as a catcher in the big leagues, but I knew him as the bullpen coach for the dynastic Braves of the '90s. He was mistreated badly in Milwaukee, and now he had a second chance. Yost was almost universally panned from the start for the way he handled the pitching staff. He stayed the course. He made players change positions. Alex Gordon, who looked like a pretty good third baseman, would learn to play left field from scratch. Again, he was panned. And then, whether it was his idea or not, the Royals shook George Brett awake from his front-office desk and made him the team's interim batting coach. Ask the Royals core players — Moustakas, Gordon, Hosmer, Cain — what it meant to have a living legend and a guy who knew nothing but

how to compete to win all the time on the bench, on road trips, on flights, presumably in bars, with them during his short reign. Then they called these anti-moneyball Royals and their coach stupid for their style of play. Duh? Didn't they know they were not supposed to be aggressive at the plate anymore? That they shouldn't be swinging all the time? That fans wanted on-base percentages and walks? That stealing bases often hurt teams more than they helped? Swinging at the first pitch? No bonafide home-run hitters? Sacrilege! Challenging hitters with relievers who were always rested and available because Yost was too stubborn to deviate from his plan to use one pitcher for his one designated inning and telling him to throw 1,000-mph fastb a l ls straight down the pipe to challenge the other team's hitters to put the ball in play due to his superior defensive team? Hummm ... on second thought, that sort of made sense, didn't it? Well Grigs, ol' pardner, we may never have got to see these games together but in the long run, it turned out more than just a little bit OK for those that stuck by this franchise, that is, the Royal We. Congratulations, Kansas City. You're a helluva town. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

CIRCA 87 SET TO RELEASE ROMANTIC COMEDY PROXIMITY IN ILLINOIS

618-322-7263

Circa 87 announces the release for the indie film Proximity shot in Missouri and Illinois, from the writer/director of Belleville and Expect Delays. “We are so excited to be premiering Proximity in Centralia on December 18 and 19, where filming began in July, says writer/director Dan Steadman. “Dozens of people from out of town have already bought their tickets, we just hope the people of Centralia will actually show up! Much has already been said about the guest appearance by superstar baseb a l l p i t c h e r Ad a m Wainwright, in his first comedic film role. Wainwright plays just one of three men in a love triangle Ella (Jackie Manker) finds herself in while returning to her mom’s cottage in Centralia. Rounding out the triangle is young jazz musician Tyler (Cody Heuer) and wealthy surgeon Dr. Gordon (Bill Finkbiner) in this PG 13-style romantic comedy. “I was thrilled Adam Wainwright wanted to be in this, and that he trusted me, says Steadman. “Truthfully, we’ve all seen athletes on shows like Saturday Night Live unsuccessfully doing comedy. But in the case of Adam, he really pulled up his black dad socks and played a nerdy exboyfriend of our lead character, Ella. He was really funny — and it was great to see him outside the role of baseball jock and into the role of a relatable geeky guy.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Giving Thanks to God Te n l e prous me n hobbled and shuffled their way up the dusty, lonely path to the little village where they heard Jesus the miracle worker had come. Diseased, hopeless, and desperate, these outcasts from society stood far away from the crowd. When they saw Jesus they began to shout in unison, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” A ray of hope filled their heart. No one else cared about their plight. Leprosy was a sentence of a slow, disfiguring, ghastly death. There was no medical cure. But Jesus called out to them, “Go show yourselves unto the priests.” (Luke 17:11-19) Only the priests could examine and declare clean those who claimed to be healed. As the ten lepers turned to obey the Lord’s command, miracles happened instantly before their eyes. They were all healed. They continued their journey to find a priest and get a clean bill of health. That is, all except one. This one leper had to turn back. He was so overcome with appreciation that he ran and fell on his face at the feet of Jesus and “with a loud voice glorified God.” And

the Bible adds, “He was a Samaritan.” Is there any significance in that? The Jews generally treated the Samaritans as outcasts. Disease, disasters, and suffering tend to break down the dividing walls. These Jews and Samaritans lived together with their leprosy. In the face of death insignificant things don’t really matter. This leper who returned to give thanks was a despised Samaritan. Could it be that being despised, rejected, or afflicted could create in people a gratitude for kindnesses shown to them? When Jesus saw that only the one leper returned to offer thanks, he asked, “’Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God save this stranger?’ And he said unto him, ‘Arise, go your way: your faith has made you whole.’” (Luke 17:1719) What about you? Have you returned to give thanks and glory for all God has done for you? What is the percentage today of people who are really thankful for God, Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and the many other kind-

nesses shown to them. The leper returned healed and happy, fell on his face at the feet of Jesus, and gave him glory and thanks. Here are a few of the 12 benefits of the power of thanksgiving. T HA N K S G I V I N G BRINGS US INTO GOD’S PRESENCE. “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and bless his name.” (Psalm 100:4; II Chronicles 5:13) T HA N K S G I V I N G GIVES GLORY TO GOD. It expresses appreciation for who He is and what He has done. Appreciative people are happier and healthier people overall, in spirit, soul, and body. Jesus healed the ten lepers but only one returned to thank him. “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on His face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.” (Luke 17:15-16; Exodus 16:3) T HA N K S G I V I N G R E L E A S E S G O D’ S POWER, PURPOSE, PEACE, AND PRESENCE IN OUR LIVES AND CIRCUMSTANCES. We are given this key, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (I Thessalonians 5:18) Sometimes thanks-

giving is a sacrifice, an act of the will, an act of faith. (Psalm 116:3-4, 17) T HA N K S G I V I N G PLEASES GOD. “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” (Hebrews 13:15) T HA N K S G I V I N G HELPS RELEASE FAITH. Jesus commended the leper who returned to give thanks. “Arise, go your way, your faith has made you whole.” (Luke 17:19) Are you like the nine lepers who did not return thanks or the Samaritan who gave glory to God? On to the refugees. Obama said, "Shame on us for not taking three-year-old orphans and women." I have a real issue with that statement coming from the leader of a country that's supposed to be concerned about his own country and its citizens. It leaves me questioning his real priorities! The first point to be made is there are a lot more single men, allegedly refugees, than women and three-year-old orphans. And there are a lot of

WE FILL YOUR R OWN TANKS!

On to France. French President François Hollande has vowed to make ISIS pay. Hollande has extended the state of emergency in France at least another three months. The mood of the moment demands that action be taken. In remembering 9-11 I recall extensive legislation pushed through Congress right afterwards. Call it what you may, from out of fear to protecting the homeland, but it made sense to me to take extra measures after 9-11 to protect our citizens and country. And with that said, in my opinion, this applies to after the fact in France. Since Friday's evening of terror, French authorities have conducted a number of raids that have netted hundreds of arrests and an arsenal of weapons as well as a raid at a flat last Wednesday that claimed the life of Friday night's terrorist ring leader as well as a female suicide bomber who blew herself up just before another attack could be carried out.

On to New York City. At this time there are a number of propaganda videos by ISIS that have surfaced, one with Times Square being mentioned causing concern. Mayor Bill de Blasio has made it clear, according to MSNBC, that New York is prepared to deal with at least 24 simultaneous attacks. The mayor's response to this particular video was, "There is no credible threat to New York City." I think Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) would disagree with him or anyone who would say there's no credible threat at this time, but I can only hope the mayor is right and doesn't have to deal with one attack, let alone 24.

women that are more than capable of terrorism. Keep in mind, during Wednesday's raid in France, it was a woman that detonated a suicide bomb. It was brought to my attention that to refuse or talk against these refugees is xenophobia. To that individual I say it's true you can't lump all refugees together. No one is saying they're all terrorists, but why would you take any chance! In these uncertain unusual times, it takes extreme measures to keep Americans safe, and to do less than that is total irresponsibility. These 10,000 refugees can not be properly vetted, and for Obama or anyone else to think or suggest they can be is again living in a fantasy world. It takes so few to hurt so many. That's reality. And guess what, the Democrats agree! L ast Thursday the Democrats delivered a stunning blow to Obama's Syrian refugee plan by siding with the Republicans in an effort to effectively stifle the flow of refugees to the U.S. following the French attack. At this time, 30 governors and a number of mayors have come out against accepting refugees in their states, including Gov. Rauner of Illinois, thank God! And with the latest terrorist threat to turn the White House black with fire, it's refreshing to know Democrats do get it even though Obama doesn't. It leaves me wondering who's corner he's really in! He's a man who is willing to gamble with American lives, along with Hillary Clinton, who sounds just like Obama! They endanger the security of this country. Make no mistake, Obama helped create this problem! On to comments by Sen. Kyle McCarter. —————— Congressional candidate and current Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter is calling for a halt in the Obama Administration’s plan to permit thousands of Syrian refugees into the United States.

“In light of the terrorist attacks on Paris, and reports that at least one of the terrorists was a “refugee” from Syria, the Obama Administration should halt Syrian refugees coming to the United States,” said McCarter. McCarter said Illinoisans he hears from are concerned about exactly who the refugees are and he points to a United Nations report estimating the vast majority of refugees from the war-torn areas dominated by terrorism are men. “Eight people were responsible for the 129 murders and the more than 300 critical injuries during the six coordinated attacks in Paris, yet the federal government wants to bring in ten thousand refugees,” said McCarter. “Isis is on record warning they would smuggle in covert jihadists to western countries, hidden among innocent refugees.” McCarter said he supports Governor Bruce Rauner’s decision Monday to temporarily suspend Illinois’ acceptance of new Syrian refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security conducts a full review of its refugee processes. “Given the obvious risks to the United States and our citizens in Illinois, I support this decision for Illinois,” said McCarter. “On behalf of Illinois families, I want to know what assurances our federal government can give us about the legitimacy of those seeking refugee status. We should be concerned. Because of the ongoing war in Syria I don’t believe an accurate vetting of refugees is possible. This puts all of us at great risk.” ——————

CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY BUT

OPEN THIS SUNDAY NOON-4:00 p.m.

The holidays are in full swing. It's time to start planning those Christmas get-togethers. Some of my favorite appetizer, soup and snack recipes come from one of my favorite companies, locally owned and operated Country Bob's, for two reasons: 1) Christ is their CEO as he is ours at the Shoppers Weekly, and 2) I as well as my family love Country Bob's products. At the top of the list is wingettes. I can't have a get-together or party without them. And with Christmas just around the corner, let me share the following scripture which the Country Bob's and The Shopper's Weekly staff members believe: "I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ." May God bless and keep you as we celebrate the birth of Christ.

Wingettes

5 lbs. chicken wings 4 cups flour 1/ 4 cup granulated garlic 4 tsp. Country Bob's Seasoning Salt

1/4 tsp. red pepper Oil for deep-frying 1/2 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

Cut off and discard the wing tips and separate each wing into 2 pieces at the joint if desired. Rinse the chicken wings; drain and set aside. Combine the flour, granulated garlic, Country Bob's Seasoning Salt and red pepper in a double thickness paper bag and shake until well mixed. Add the wings, several at a time, and shake until coated. Heat the oil to 350 degrees in a deep fryer. Add the wings, several at a time, to the hot oil and fry for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and place in a large bowl. Add the desired amount of Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce and toss lightly until coated. Serve with additional sauce. Yield: variable.

Country Bob's Chip Dip

1 lb. lean ground beef 1 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup chopped onion

Salt to taste 8 oz. cream cheese 1/2 cup Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

Cook the ground beef, green pepper and onion in a skillet until brown and crumbly, stirring frequently. Drain the ground beef mixture and return to the skillet. Season with salt. Chop the cream cheese into pieces and add to the skillet with Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce. Heat over low heat until the cream cheese melts, stirring frequently. Serve hot with favorite sturdy chips. Yield: 4 to 5 cups.

Turkey-Day Trivia That Might Surprise You • The people who crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower weren't even called Pilgrims. Most of them, dissidents who had broken away from the Church of England, called themselves Saints while others called them Separatists. Some settlers were known as Puritans, dissidents but not separatists, who wanted to "purify" the Church. Not until roughly the American Revolution did the name Pilgrims become associated with the Plymouth settlers. • Except for the World War II years of 1939 to 1944, the Detroit Lions have hosted a football game every Thanksgiving since 1934. Of the 70 games they have so far played on that date, they have lost 84 of them. Only NFL fans will find the previous sentence mildly amusing, if that. • In a letter to his daugh-

ter, Benjamin Franklin wrote of his disappointment, if not entirely serious, that the bald eagle —"a Bird of bad moral character" — was chosen to be the U.S. national bird. Franklin preferred the turkey — "though a little vain and silly, a Bird of Courage." • Of the turkeys eaten annually in the U.S., one in five is consumed on Thanksgiving. • John F. Kennedy spared a turkey on November 19, 1963, three days before he was assassinated. There was yet no tradition of turkeys being granted presidential pardons around Thanksgiving; Kennedy simply did it spontaneously. The bird wore a sign that read, "Good Eatin' Mr. President," and Kennedy said, "Let's just keep him." • While we have come to believe that we nod off easily after the Thanksgiving

meal because of unusually high levels of tryptophan in turkey (and because we are watching the Detroit Lions play football), the level is comparable to that in most other meats. The drowsiness is likely more attributable to the enormous consumption of carbohydrates, which triggers the release of insulin. • "Cranberry Day," not "Turkey Day," would seem a fairer nickname for Thanksgiving: Approximately 88% of Americans eat turkey on the day but more than 94% of Thanksgiving dinners include cranberry sauce. • Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor and author, influenced American life in a way few people have: Not only did her campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday finally bear fruit in 1863, after many

decades and editorials, when President Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation; she also wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb." • For the first few years of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, animals from the Central Park Zoo marched along with bands, other entertainers and store employees. 1927 saw the appearance of the first big-animal-shaped floats, such as Felix the Cat, but they were filled with air, not helium. The following year, floats were filled with helium; at the parade's conclusion, the balloons were released – and burst. In 1929, the floats were equipped with safety valves so they could float for a few days. Address labels were sewn into the floats; anyone who found and mailed back the discarded balloon would receive a gift from Macy's.

Wishing You And Your Family A Very Blessed Thanksgiving

The First Thanksgiving: What Was On The Menu? Today, the traditional Thanksgiving dinner includes any number of dishes: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied yams, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. But if one were to create a historically accurate feast, consisting of only those foods that historians are certain were served at the so-called “first Thanksgiving,” there would be slimmer pickings. While no records exist of the exact bill of fare, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow noted in his journal that the colony’s governor, William Bradford, sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the three-day event. Wild—but not domestic—turkey was indeed plentiful in the region and a common food source for both English settlers and Native Americans. But it is just as likely that the fowling party returned with other birds we know the colonists regularly consumed, such as ducks, geese and swans. Instead of bread-based stuffing, herbs, onions or nuts might have been added to the birds for extra flavor.

Turkey or no turkey, the first Thanksgiving’s attendees almost certainly got their fill of meat. Winslow wrote that the Wampanoag guests arrived with an offering of five deer. Culinary historians speculate that the deer was roasted on a spit over a smoldering fire and that the colonists might have used some of the venison to whip up a hearty stew. The 1621 Thanksgiving celebration marked the Pilgrims’ first autumn harvest, so it is likely that the colonists feasted on the bounty they had reaped with the help of their Native American neighbors. Local vegetables that likely appeared on the table include onions, beans, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, carrots and perhaps peas. Corn, which records show was plentiful at the first harvest, might also have been served, but not in the way most people enjoy it now. In those days, the corn would have been removed from the cob and turned into cornmeal, which was then boiled and pounded into a thick corn mush or porridge that was occasionally sweetened

13

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area Lobster, bass, clams and oysters might also have been part of the feast. Whether mashed or roasted, white or sweet, potatoes had no place at the first Thanksgiving. After encountering it in its native South America, the Spanish began introducing the potato to Europeans around 1570. But by the time the Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower, the tuber had neither doubled back to North America nor become popular enough with the English to hitch a ride. New England’s native inhabitants are known to have eaten other plant roots such as Indian turnips and groundnuts, which they may or may not have brought to the party. Both the Pilgrims and members of the Wampanoag tribe ate pumpkins and other squashes indigenous to New England— possibly even during the harvest festival—but the fledgling colony lacked the butter and wheat flour necessary for making pie crust. Moreover, settlers hadn’t yet constructed an oven for baking. According to some accounts, early English settlers in North America improvised by hollowing out pumpkins, filling the shells with milk, honey and spices to make a custard, then roasting the gourds whole in hot ashes.

with molasses. Fruits indigenous to the region included blueberries, plums, grapes, gooseberries, raspberries and, of course cranberries, which Native Americans ate and used as a natural dye. The Pilgrims might have been familiar with cranberries by the first Thanksgiving, but they wouldn’t have made sauces and relishes with the tart orbs. That’s because the sacks of sugar that traveled across the Atlantic on the Mayflower were nearly or fully depleted. Cooks didn’t begin boiling cranberries with sugar and using the mixture as an accompaniment for meats until about 50 years later. Culinary historians believe that much of the Thanksgiving meal consisted of seafood, which is often absent from today’s menus. Mussels in particular were abundant in New England and could be easily harvested because they clung to rocks along the shoreline. The colonists o c c a s i on a l l y s e r v e d mussels with curds, a dairy product with a similar consistency to cottage cheese.

PAWS and claws A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.

Should Mom Let Boy Adopt Pit Bull? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re going to adopt a dog now that I’m 10 years old. I saw a pit bull puppy that I liked at the shelter, but my mom said no, because they’re vicious. My friend said that’s not true. What can I do to persuade her to adopt this dog? — Braedon in Alpharetta, Ga. DEAR BR AED ON: Before I answer, I do want to tell you that your mom has your best interests and safety in mind. And because of the many publicized incidents about pit bull attacks and aggressive behavior, her first reaction is to keep you from getting hurt. Ultimately, she will be the one to approve the type

of dog to adopt. But you can try to sway her opinion with a few myth-busting facts, courtesy of the American Pit Bull Association (americanpitbullfoundation.com/pitbull-myths-debunked): • Pit bulls’ temperament is often better than that of other breeds. In temperament testing (atts.org/ breed-statistics/statisticspage1), American pit bull terriers had a passing rate of 86.8 percent, and other pit bull breeds scored above 82 percent — well above the general dog population’s average of 77 percent. • Pit bulls originally were bred as working dogs and are typically energetic, intelligent and stubborn. Like other working breeds, they do best when socialized early with other dogs and humans, and with lots of training and attention. • Pit bulls’ jaws are not stronger than other dogs, nor do they “lock” when they bite. You and your mom should look for certain

ILLINOIS COUNTY ASSESSORS ASSOCIATION MEETING The Illinois County Assessor’s Association met on November 5, 2015 at the Mt. Vernon Visitors & Convention Center for their annual meeting to set the 2016 Oil & Gas assessment schedule. Brad Richards, Executive Vice President of the Illinois Oil & Gas Association, gave an update on current conditions of the oil industry. Also presenting to the membership was Mike Mankowski, Director of Mines & Minerals Division of the IL Department of Natural Resources. Chairman, Mark Becker presented the 2016 Oil & Gas Assessment Schedule to calculate the 2016 assessments that will be payable in 2017. This schedule has

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This year, instead of jumping into the whole holiday prep scene, move in a little at a time. You’ll appreciate the sense of control you’re more likely to enjoy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The separation between the Bovine’s head and heart is never as far apart as it seems. Both senses work best when they come out of logic and honesty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The best way to keep those pre-holiday pressures under control is to just say no to taking on new tasks while you’re still trying to work with a heap of others. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) News means a change might be on its way, but what does it hold? Don’t just ask questions; make sure you get answers you can trust. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Old friends and new have one thing in common: Both your longtime and newly minted pals have much wisdom to impart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With time running out, this is a good time for you to show ‘em all what those Virgo super-organizational skills can do. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Librans and holidays are made

for each other, especially if children and animals are going to be part of your joyous season. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Time is getting too short to allow a spat to taint the holiday season. Restart your relationship and reschedule holiday fun times. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Seeking advice is laudable. You might learn far more than you thought you could. Stay with it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Continuing to assess changes works toward your getting your new project up and ready. Trusted colleagues remain ready to help. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new situation needs a lot of attention, but it’s worth it. This is a very good time for you to involve the arts in what you do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It might be a good idea to slow your hectic holiday pace so that you don’t rush past what -- or who -- you’re hoping to rush toward. BORN THIS WEEK: Others pick up on your confidence in yourself, which inspires them to believe in you and your special gifts. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
