Two decades after he pitched for Rend Lake College’s baseball team and took the floor as a Warrior for the basketball team, Dr. Brian Kern is again making headlines at his alma mater. The 1994 RLC graduate is now an orthopedic surgeon at the Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky, located in Paducah, Ky., and has been named the RLC Foundation Alumnus of the Year for 2015. He was awarded the honor during the Foundation Annual Dinner on Thursday, Dec. 3. Kern came to RLC in the Fall of 1992 as a member of Coach Tim Wills’ first recruiting class for RLC’s Men’s Basketball team. Wills, now RLC’s Athletic Director, was one individual who nominated Kern for the award – which Kern says is a special surprise on top of an already honoring award. A native to Southern

Illinois, Kern grew up just minutes from RLC in rural Franklin County. He attended Ewing Grade School and Benton Consolidated High School (BCHS) before becoming a Warrior. His father, retired president of the college Mark Kern, brought Brian and his four siblings to campus long before he attended his first class. Kern said he hopes to appeal to student athletes with big dreams, much like himself in the early 90s. His goal was to play baseball at the Division I college level and end up in the Major Leagues, but when he didn’t receive Division I offers out of high school, he decided to work on his game, while receiving a quality education, right in his own backyard. “Attending RLC and playing two sports helped me improve myself academically and athletically,” said Kern. “After high school, I had Division II and III opportunities but I decided to go to RLC so I could continue to play two sports and work on my grades. I was able to gain size and strength and develop as a pitcher while attending a local college and saving on tuition. This resulted in an opportunity to be awarded a Division 1 scholarship in baseball – one of my ultimate goals.” The Division I scholarship in baseball led him to St. Louis University (SLU),

where he intended to enroll in the Physical Therapy program. It wasn’t until after he accepted the scholarship that he found out he wasn’t eligible to enroll in the program as a transfer student. “That was where I ended up going through a series of small failures,” said Kern. “I had perfect grades and a scholarship to play baseball where I was told I could get into the physical therapy program, but they ended up not accepting transfer students. Had I known, I could’ve gone other places, but it just didn’t work out that way.” “That was when my Rend Lake College chemistry professor, John Fisher, asked me to consider a career as a physician,” said Kern. “John drove me around Southern Illinois meeting with physicians in various fields. With his help, and the help of Dr. Charles Neal in Mt. Vernon, I decided I liked the profession and wanted to pursue a career as a physician. I wanted to interact with people and have a chance to help those who needed help.” Instead of physical therapy, Kern completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Pre-Med Biology at SLU, and before medical school became a reality, he was offered a oncein-a-lifetime chance to play professional baseball. In 1997, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics organiza-

tion where he played in the Minor Leagues for three years before he was released. He then returned to Southern Illinois to attend SIU’s School of Medicine from 1999-2003. He completed his orthopedic surgery r e s i d e n c y at S I U i n Springfield from 2003-2008, during which time he also served as a Captain in the Illinois Army National Guard. Kern then accepted a sports medicine fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Los Angeles, Calif., where he worked specifically in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and reconstructive surgery on shoulders and knees. He was the first fellowship-trained surgeon in arthroscopy and sports medicine in the Paducah area. “I wanted to come back to Southern Illinois, so I called the CEO of the Orthopedic Institute of Southern Illinois, Greg Thompson. There was not an opening for a sports medicine physician within their group, but he asked if I would be interested in starting a group in the Western Kentucky as a division of the Southern Illinois group,” said Kern. “I joined up with two other doctors, Dr. Clint Hill and Dr. Brandon Strenge, and with the help of the Southern Illinois group, we founded the Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky in 2009.” Since that time, the orthopedic group has grown to ten physicians and has over 100 employees. The Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky resides in a newly constructed building in Paducah, Ky. The Orthopedic Institute also recently completed the opening of a new ambulatory surgery center in Massac County, which is a $6 million project in partnership with Massac County Hospital. Kern said, the Center hopes to employ around 25 people and provide access to quality care to lower Southern I l l i n oi s an d We s t e r n Kentucky patients. Annually, the institute injects more than $3.3 million into the local economy. At t h e O r t h op e d i c Institute, Kern serves as the Chairman of the Board and the Medical Director of the OI Surgery Center, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the OI of S outhern Illinois and Western Kentucky. Kern and his wife Summer currently reside in Paducah, where they are raising three children of their own, a son Caden, 9, and two daughters, Charli, 5, and Ellsie, 2. They are expecting a baby boy in March.

Finally, Barack Obama said the San Bernardino attack was a probable terrorist attack, only after he said this horrible act could have been work place violence. Unbelievable! Will he ever utter the words Islamic Terrorist? T he t wo att a cke rs , husband and wife, 28-yearold Syed Farook and 27-yearold Tashfeen Malik opened fire on a Christmas party, killing 14 (from 26 to 61 years old) and wounded an additional 21. After the attack, the authorities, along with the FBI, found their home — located in a peaceful suburban neighborhood in San Bernardino — anything but peaceful. It was a complete, well put together bombmaking facility. They also uncovered thousands of rounds of ammunition and at least 12 completed pipe bombs, as well as other weaponry. The two attackers were alleged followers of ISIS. It was reported that during the attack the wife, Malik, took time to post her allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS. The Islamic State also took credit for the act of terrorism immediately. This all happened prior to Obama alluding to his work place violence comment! The family of the couple are claiming they knew nothing, and the grandmother lived with them. The couple lived the American Dream. Farook had a $75,000 a year job. The wife was a housewife and full time mother to a six-monthold baby. They lived in a quiet suburban area in sunny California.

Tashfeen came to America on a fiancée visa!! How did she go from a wife and mother to a killer. Was she self radicalized? Was he? At this point, many are suggesting she radicalized him. How does this happen? ISIS uses online and on the ground recruitment procedures. Social media gives terrorist organizations a lot of power. According to MSNBC, there are approximately 300 individuals involved with ISIS in this country (if the truth were known probably more), with 56 of them being arrested this year alone. Obama immediately started his gun control rhetoric. I would suggest to him the first thing that should be done is close the damn borders! These are unusual times and call for strong, unusual measures as well as a strong commander-inchief. Keep in mind, the female shooter, Tashfeen Malik, was granted a green card in July 2015 and came here on a fiancée visa. She married Syed Farook for the second time. The first time they married in Mecca, a most holy place. But U.S. law requires a marriage within 90 days, which they did. As per Obama and gun control, California has the strictest gun laws in the country and has the highest rate of mass shootings. In my opinion, Obama has left a huge void in this country, leaving most people afraid and not trusting the government. Currently, just 19% say they can trust the government always or most of the time, among the lowest levels in the past half-century. Only 20% would describe

government programs as being well-run. And elected officials are held in such low regard that 55% of the public says “ordinary Americans” would do a better job of solving national problems. That leaves 81% of us not trusting our government, certainly not a good climate to ask people to turn over any type of guns they own or try to restrict gun rights. It's not going to happen. A closing thought: Does Obama still think he has one of the most rigorous screening processes for immigrants? Remember, one of the San Bernardino, California shooters made it through his rigorous screening processes. And to top off the craziness, the State Department said at this time they have no plans to change a thing! And finally, during the national address Sunday night from the White House, after dancing around, Obama finally said ever so faintly that what happened in San Bernardino was an act of terrorism. He called on Muslims and Americans worldwide to speak out against ISIS and all those who have this perverted view of Islam. The big question is why haven't these things been done before? Until next week! To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. "I am so excited for this opportunity to join this outstanding organization. I believe God has great things in store for UMCH and the children, youth and families we serve," states Shadowens. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

All About Grace Gospel recording artist Allen Asbury sings a song that sums up the essence of the gospel, “All About Grace.” Christmas is all about the grace and mercy of God. The lights of Christmas point to the Messiah who came to the earth as a bright and shining light that shines in the darkness of the world. The Jewish priests had the responsibility of keeping the lights in the temple shining and the incense on the altar burning. As Zachariah, the priest, was going about his duty, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that his wife Elizabeth, who had been barren for many years, would have a baby who would be the forerunner of Christ and would go in the spirit and power of Elijah, “To make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:17) They were to name the child John, which, interestingly, means “grace” or “God is gracious.” When Elizabeth found out she was pregnant, she exclaimed, “The Lord has done this for me . . . In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”

1. Is the Book of Numbers in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. What book of the Bible mentions the word "holiness" the most times, at 152? G enesis, E xo dus,

(Luke 1:5-25 NIV) Elizabeth realized that she was blessed simply because of God’s favor. This is grace, the unmerited favor of God. To experience the true miracle of Christmas, you must apply these aspects of grace. SAVING GRACE. To understand a concept in the Bible, many Bible scholars apply what’s called the law of first mention. The first mention of the word “grace” is found in Genesis 6:8. When the earth became totally corrupt and wicked, God determined to destroy the whole earth with a flood. But we find this beacon of light, “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8) God inst r u c te d No a h to prepare an ark, or big boat, for the saving of his family. The ark is a perfect picture of saving grace through Christ. “For God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love . . . even when

we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), . . . For by grace you have been saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:4-9) ENABLING GRACE. When John was born, Zachariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied as he sang what has been called “Zachariah’s Song”. “Praise be to the Lord . . . because he has come and redeemed his people . . . to rescue us from the hand of our enemies and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness.” (Luke 1:68-75) Only by God’s enabling grace can we serve him and live in holiness and righteousness. Whatever God asks you to do, he will give you the grace to do it. The apostle Paul had what he referred to as “a thorn in the flesh.” He prayed three times for God to deliver him. God’s answer was, “My grace is sufficient for you.” (II Corinthians 12:9) Paul credited God for His grace to take the gospel to the gentiles. (Galatians 2:6-9) God’s grace will enable you to accomplish His will. EXTENDING

GRACE. Zachariah prophesied of the Messiah who would “give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79) The Jewish feast of Purim commemorated the deliverance of the Hebrews from the plots of wicked Haman, who wanted to exterminate the Jews. (Esther 3:7–9:26) Jewish Queen Esther risked her life to go before the king uninvited and unannounced to beseech the king to spare their lives. The king stretched out his scepter of grace to her. God has stretched out his Scepter of grace to us through His only begotten son. (John 3:16) Should we not also extend grace to others? Paul was shunned by the apostles, because of his past, until Barnabas extended grace to him. To experience the miracle of Christmas, extend grace to those who have offended you. It’s all about grace. Experience God’s saving grace — His enabling grace — and extend His grace to others. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might feel that you have all the answers right now. But it might be wise to listen to other ideas before you decide to close the lid on other possibilities. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bovines give and expect loyalty, so it might not be easy to reconcile with someone you feel let you down. Why not ask a neutral party to set up a clear-the-air meeting? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Anticipating the holidays with family and friends fuels your must-do Gemini energies. But try to pace yourself so you’ll be up for whatever comes along later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) More background information might come through regarding a decision you expect to make. Be sure to check the source carefully before you move. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The strong, nurturing nature of the Lion comes through this week as you reach out to family and friends in need of your warm and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A relationship that has almost totally unraveled could be close to being restored with more effort on your part to be more patient and less judgmental. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of fair play is strong this week, which can cause a prob-

lem with a longtime relationship. But in the end, you’ll know what decision to make. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might not know all the facts behind an unwelcome development, so keep that Scorpion temper in check and resist lashing out at anyone. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time to reinforce relationships -- family, friends, colleagues -- that might have been overlooked in recent years. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family situations continue to thrive. Business associations also improve. Some holiday plans might have to be shifted a bit. Be flexible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Avoid any influence of negative energy in this week’s aspect by not allowing small problems to grow into large ones. Work them out immediately. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A friend might need advice on how to deal with a challenge to his or her moral values. And who better than you to give the honest answer? Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of adventure that inspires others to follow your lead. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015 of both Legos and Star Wars, you probably won't be surprised to learn that the first licensed, themed Lego set was an X-Wing fighter, released in 1999. • Those who study such things say that wearing skinny jeans can cause varicose veins. • In the 1930s, during the Bolshevik Revolution, a Communist patrol in Siberia came across an isolated fundamentalist Russian Orthodox settlement. Christians were persecuted in the Soviet Union, and one of the soldiers shot and killed a man working in the village. This prompted the man's brother, Karp Lykov, to flee into the forest with his wife and two young children. A sad story, perhaps, but nothing unusual -- until you find out that the Lykov

family remained in complete isolation for 42 years. It wasn't until 1978 that surveyors in a helicopter saw in a remote area a clearing that was obviously not of natural origin. Investigation revealed that Karp and his four children (his wife had died in 1961) were living in a crude log dwelling. They'd had no contact with the outside world since fleeing their village in 1936, and two of the children had never seen a human not related to them. • A male lion can mate up to 50 times in one day. *** Thought for the Day: "Language is the apparel in which your thoughts parade in public.
