BUCHHEIT HAULS ‘WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA’

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS FOR SOLDIERS

Buchheit Logistics is honored to participate in the Wreaths Across America campaign this year. Wreaths Across America began in 1992 with a trailer load of wreaths decorated by volunteers, with the intention of putting a wreath on every headstone at Arlington National Cemetery. Now a national organization with over 900 participating locations across the country, Wreaths Across America focuses on the mission to “Remember, Honor, Teach.” On Monday, November 30, Buchheit Logistics driver, Thomas Tinnin, an Army Veteran, left Scott City, Missouri headed to Maine to pick up a load of wreaths for southeast Missouri. Tinnin is a retired 20+ year Active Duty Army National Guard Veteran who bravely served in Iraq. After retiring from the military, he was hired by Buchheit Logistics and has been part of their team for over three years. Follow Tinnin’s journey back to Scott City via B u c h h e i t L o g i s t i c s’ Facebook Page. Buchheit Logistics is donating trucking services used to deliver wreaths that will be laid on headstones at Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, Missouri as well as five smaller cemeteries around the Scott City and Benton areas. On Thursday, December

10 at 9:30 a.m., the commemoratively decorated t rai ler j our ne ye d to M i s s o u r i Ve t e r a n s Cemetery at Bloomfield to make its first delivery. Tinnin was escorted the entire route by police, American Legion Riders, Patriot Guard Riders, and others from Lawless Harley Davidson. Tinnin hauled the remaining wreaths to the American Legion in Benton where they were later taken to Old Benton C emeter y, St. D enis C e m e t e r y, L i g h t n e r Cemetery, St. Lawrence Church, and St. Joseph Cemetery. All wreaths were laid by volunteers on National Wreaths Across America Day — December 12, 2015. A ceremony was held on December 12, 2015, at M i s s o u r i Ve t e r a n s Cemetery at Bloomfield at 11 a.m. The Buchheit Logistics truck and trailer were present. On December 15, additional wreaths were delivered to the Buchheit Corporate Headquarters where all eight store managers received them on behalf of their local community American Legion, VFW, and AmVets posts. Each store manager will present a wreath to the posts in their communities as a token of gratitude for their service. The Buchheit family is proud to honor the military in each community they serve by displaying a com-

memorative wreath made by Wreaths Across America in each of the retail stores, Corporate Office, Agri Division, and Buchheit Logisics office. Buchheit Logistics recruits from the Armed Forces veterans’ community, a practice that recently earned it the state of Missouri’s Flag of Freedom award. “Veterans are an essential part of our team,” said Jeff Buchheit, Army Veteran and Vice President of Buchheit Logistics, “Their service and dedication means so much to our family and our business.” About Wreaths Across America Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, begun by Maine businessman Mor r i l l Worcester in 1992. The organization’s mission, Remember, Honor, Teach, is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies each December at Arlington, as well as at hundreds of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. ROE #13 SAFE SCHOOL PROGRAM GIVING STUDENTS A CHANCE TO SOAR The Regional Office of Education #13 (ROE #13), under the direction of Ron Daniels, Regional Superintendent, provides two Regional Safe School Programs (RSSP) in the Clinton, Jefferson, Marion and Washington County areas. The RSSP provides an alternative education option for students who are disruptive, expelled or suspended, or are eligible for suspension or expulsion from their local school district. “Our local school districts are experiencing financial challenges along with much of the rest of the state. Administrators and educators are also very concerned about their students’ safety. Many of our schools can’t afford to devote the resources and staff time needed for suspension or expulsion eligible students to get back on track. Expelling or suspending the student removes the student from the local school, but does nothing to serve that student’s educational needs and doesn’t promote community safety,” states Regional Superintendent Daniels.

The Regional Office of Education (ROE) #13 RSSP is designed to serve as an educational resource for students in crisis and a support system for their families and the community. Students in the Regional Safe School Program receive academic and age appropriate services, such as work-based learning, behavior modification training, life skills training, counseling, mentoring, and community service to comprehensively meet the individual needs of students. Administrators of the program work with the student, the student’s parents, and the sending school district to develop an Individual Optional Education Plan for each student enrolled in the program. Attendance, behavior and academic progress are closely monitored to ensure a successful outcome. The program is proving to be very successful. The ISBE annual report indicates that out of all students enrolled in the program statewide, 49 percent were promoted to the next grade

level. Nine percent graduated, and only 8.4 percent dropped out. Students are referred from the local school districts to the Regional Safe School Program. Regional Superintendent Daniels stated, “The key to our successful program is the fact that school administrators recognize the value in the services provided. The educational staff at each of our facilities, the Alternative Learning Center in Mt. Vernon and the Alternative Learning Academy in Centralia, are very dedicated to the students enrolled in the program. My staff is specifically trained to provide our students with the necessary skills of conflict resolution and how to modify their behavior to ensure student and teacher relationships are positive and effective. All students should have an education that prepares them to be successful, productive members of their communities. The ROE #13 Regional Safe School Program provides that opportunity.”

TRASH & BAGGED LEAF/LIMB PICKUP trash and bagged leaf/limb routes will run a day behind. Friday’s routes will be picked up on Saturday, December 26. There will be

no change for December 24. Please contact the Office of the City Manager with any questions at 618-5337623.

At this point, my prediction is the Republicans are going to have to hold their breath or their nose and accept Donald Trump, even though the new poll in Iowa shows Ted Cruz leading at 31% over Donald Trump at 21%. Here's the catch: The Des Moines Register conducted the poll! Remember, The Des Moines Register was the newspaper that The Donald banned from his press conference. Could this be a gotcha moment? With Ted Cruz on the rise and also Marco Rubio, could this become a three way split?

• A Republican wipeout down the ballot in the general election. • The effect of his outl an d i s h c om m e nt s (What's coming next?) • Inability to go after him without angering Trump supporters. • Trump will go in as an Independent (their biggest fear!) Keep in mind Trump supporters come from many segments of the Republican Party. But I think Chuck Todd on Meet the Press might be right: The Democrats are falling in line and the Republicans are falling in love with the bad boy!

New Polls: Leading into the fifth and final debate of the year, this Tuesday night on CNN one of the national polls showed: Trump 27% Cruz 22% Rubio 15% Carson 11% The Iowa poll (The Des Moines Register) showed: Cruz 31% Donald 21% And then come Rubio and Carson.

On to the recent climate change conference in Paris. It's important to note our government is going to give $860 million to other nations to work with us on climate change. What idiots! I've said it once, I'll say it again, Barack Obama and his groupies are the worst thing that ever happened to this country! And Hillary Clinton is part of the current establishment. Obama said he feels the climate change conference was a turning point for the world. The kicker is there's nothing to hold these 186 other countries to their word.

We're 50 days out before the Iowa caucuses! It's time for the GOP to get together! Why does the GOP fear Donald Trump?

Oh! I forgot! When questioned about the stupidity of this deal, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said we could wag our fingers at them and that could be the worst thing! We are $19 trillion in debt and we continue to give other countries our money. What a deal for the world! Not us! If this administration wasn't s o b ad for America this would all be laughable. On a closing note, the mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel —again, another part of the past Obama administration — needs to give it up and resign! No one can tell me he agreed to pay out $5 million, where there was no wrong doing (and you've got to know he watched the tape!) In my world they call it hush money! It just didn't work this time. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Vince Lombardi on Winning With high-school football seasons coming to an end and the college championships and NFL playoffs mere weeks away, it occurred to me that something was missing from today's game in general: the compass. For all of you coaches out there, it's probably been a long time since you've heard the immortal words of Vince Lombardi. Maybe some of you never heard or read them at all. Let's rectify that once and for all. Here's something you can clip out and put on your bulletin boards and locker-room walls: Vince L ombardi on winning. You're welcome.

• "Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an allthe-time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. • "There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second-place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win. • "Every time a football

This Is BIG!

Really BIG!

Cooking With Lizzie

You haven't had Italian until you've had Joe's Italian at Mamma Antonia's in downtown Centralia. I was lucky enough to be invited to spend last Monday evening in the kitchen with Joe. The minute I walked in the fun began as we opened a bottle of vino and Joe started filling me in on his secret recipes. Why the invite? Because Joe and I have shared our love of making a supreme lasagna, bread, home made noodles, and of course, a rich meat sauce, ragu from Bologna. When I asked Joe where he got his love of cooking and where he learned it he said, “Well, I'm a traditional Italian cook and I learned some from my mom. But mostly it was natural.” That was apparent as I watched him spin his magic in the kitchen with great passion. He grew up in Italy! I promised Joe I wouldn't give away his recipes. But I will say the sauces begin with the trinity which is every good cook's secret: onions, celery and, of course, carrots. It goes on from there. And then come the noodles for everything from lasagna to fettuccine. Joe starts with his secret weapon, a special flour which he orders. He was kind enough to give me a couple of pounds. As he stood over the delicacy of freshly made pasta, he smiled and said, “If you overcook the noodles you lose the nutritional value.” With Joe it's not about fast, unhealthy food, but about his diners getting the freshest, healthiest and most delicious meals, a heavenly dinner of home made noodles and sauce. I left with enough food to feed an army, but by the end of the evening I realized that there's Italian and then there's real Italian! There is nothing better than a perfect meal, good company and, of course, a glass of vino! Thanks, Joe. So for a quick trip to Italy, stop in at Mamma Antonia's. It truly is one of my favorite spots to kick back, relax and enjoy! Below are just a few of my favorite recipes. For Joe's recipes, you'll just have to talk to him!

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Mary Did You Know? Imagine what the Virgin Mary must have thought when the angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she was “highly favored” and chosen to bring forth the Messiah. I recently saw a stunning video of an a cappella rendition of a song by Peter Hollens — “Mary Did You Know?” The song asks, “Mary did you know that your baby boy would walk upon water? ... Mary did you know when you kissed your baby boy, you kissed the face of God? ... Mary did you know your baby boy is the Lord of creation?” Consider this awesome birth announcement given to Mar y by the angel Gabriel. It could forever change your life. (Luke 1:26-55) MARY’S VIRGINITY. The scriptures make it clear that the Christ would be born of a virgin. The angel Gabriel was dispatched to a virgin named Mary, who was espoused to a man named Joseph of the house of David. (Luke 1:27) Isaiah prophesied, “Behold, the virgin shall

15

conceive and bear a son and shall call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) Immanuel means, “God with us!” The scriptures also tell us that before Mary and Joseph came together Christ was conceived in Mary’s womb by the Holy Spirit. If Jesus had an earthly father, he would have inherited the adamic sin nature and His blood could not have made atonement for our sins. MARY ’S CHILD. Gabriel announced that the child Mary would give birth to would be called Jesus, which, in Hebrew, means “Yeshua — Jehovah is salvation.” “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest.” (Luke 1:31-32) Isaiah prophesied that His name among other names would be “Mighty God.” (Isaiah 9:6) Gabriel also revealed that Jesus would be conceived by the Holy Spirit and “that Holy One ... will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35) Mary, did you know? MARY’S QUESTION. The Virgin Mary had a logical question, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” (Luke

1:34) Gabriel told her of her cousin Elizabeth’s miracle of conception in her old age and revealed a powerful truth. “For with God nothing will be impossible.” (Luke 1:38) Christmas is pregnant with miracles. Do you need a miracle? Believe! Elizabeth prophesied of Mary by the Holy Spirit, ‘Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.” (Luke 1:45) Mary believed. MARY’S SONG. The Christmas story is so glorious that it fills one with song. Mary sang, “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” (Luke 1:46-55) Magnify Immanuel, Son of the Highest and He will fill you with song. Mary did you know? MARY’S SAVIOR. As blessed as Mary was, she acknowledged that she needed a Savior. “And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” (Luke 1:47) The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and told him to take Mary who was pregnant, as his wife. “And she will bring forth a Son and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21) Mary needed a Savior. You need a Savior. God gave the greatest gift of all, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.

That whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) “Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters? Mary, did you know your baby boy would make you new?” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Pet Insurance Checklist DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My veterinarian recommended that I buy pet insurance for my puppy, “Max.” Should I purchase the insurance that the vet recommends, or can I choose my own policy? — New Owner in Nashville DEAR NEW OWNER: Pet owners should always compare pet insurance policies to see what will work best for their budget and breed of dog (or cat, or other pet). There are a number of questions you should ask. Each insurance provider will have a slightly different answer, price and type of coverage. Here are a few things to look for when considering a policy, courtesy of DVM360: • Does your pet’s veteri-

narian accept the type of insurance coverage you’re considering? • Is the insurance company licensed in your state? • Does the policy cover “wellness” or “preventive care” such as annual checkups and shots? • What are the minimum and maximum pet ages for enrollment? • What is the policy’s deductible? Can you change that deductible from year to year? • What kind of health conditions or care are not included? • What are the annual and lifetime care limits, if any? • What if your pet has a pre-existing condition? • Are there any extra fees that could be charged? Are any discounts available? • How much will you pay per month for the policy? Will those rates increase? These are just some of the important questions you should ask of a pet policy provider. You’ll want to find a balance between the cost of the policy and the

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was noted American journalist, fabulist and satirist Ambrose Bierce who, in his work "The Devil's Dictionar y," defined "painting" as "the art of protecting flat surfaces from the weather and exposing them to the critic." • Only one state has a one-syllable name: Maine. • A married couple in Batavia, New York, had such a turbulent marriage that the wife had a re-

straining order issued to keep her husband away from her. After the divorce, though, they worked things out and planned a second wedding. At the reception, the second-time groom got into an argument with one of the guests, and the police were called. The argument didn't end up being the real problem; the officers on the scene arrested the groom on charges of criminal con-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) At this time you might want to resist that otherwise admirable Aries penchant for getting to the heart of a matter quickly. Keep in mind that a delicate situation calls for patience. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your aspects favor more diplomacy and fewer direct confrontations when dealing with a relationship problem. Avoiding hurt feelings can help in your search for the truth. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Positive aspects are strong this week. Although you might still have to deal with some problems caused by a recent period of turmoil, you are making progress, and that’s what counts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family matter could benefit from your counsel. But don’t come into it unless invited, and don’t stay if you feel uneasy. Just remember to reassure one and all that you’ll be there for them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As the truth about an ongoing situation emerges, you could find that you were right to defer judgment before you had all the facts. Now would be a good time to move on to other matters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your plans to take control of a personal situation because you feel you are best qualified could create resentment. Best to hear what everyone else involved in the matter has to say about it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Uncovering some surprising background facts about that ongo-

tempt. It seems the original restraining order was still in effect — it was illegal for him to be near his bride on their wedding day. • Those who study such things say that dead people can get goosebumps. • Arguably, the bestknown battle of the U.S. Civil War occurred in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1863. This battle saw the most casualties of any during the war, and it is considered by many historians to be a turning point. Many don't realize the sheer volume of gunfire that occurred there,

ing personal matter could make you reconsider the extent of your involvement. A neutral family member offers advice. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Religious or spiritual themes start to dominate your aspect this week. This can serve as a counterweight to the mounting effects of the season’s growing commercialization. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking on that recent challenge impressed a lot of important decision-makers. Meanwhile, proceed with your holiday plans, and don’t forget to include you-know-who in them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Disagreeing with an opinion you can’t accept could be dicey, and your motives might be questioned. Best to wait to mount a challenge until you have support for your position. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting involved in helping others in this increasingly hectic period not only makes the generous Aquarian feel good, but you could also gain a more substantive benefit from your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Piscean way of thinking clearly and objectively helps you resolve a complex situation without creating any ill will. Don’t be surprised if your counsel is requested on another matter. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of persuading people to look at the positive possibilities that make up any choices they might face. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

though; so many bullets were fired during the three-day battle — and so many went astray — that trees near the battlefield later died from lead poisoning. • You might be surprised to learn that the game of Chinese checkers isn't from Asia at all; it was invented in Germany. *** Thought for the Day: "One of the few good things about modern times: If you die horribly on television, you will not have died in vain. You will have entertained us."— Kur t Vonnegut © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
