GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES (GAPS) In 2011, the passage of the Food Safety Mo d e r n i z a t i o n Ac t (FSMA) Produce rule proposed new regulations pertaining to fresh produce pro duc t ion. As of November 2015, the proposed rules have now become law. As a grower/ producer of fresh fruit and vegetables, how does that affect you? Food safety begins on the farm and the responsibility of growing

and harvesting safe food is more important today than it has ever been. You need to be concerned about food safety if you are selling from your farm, at local farmer’s markets or other markets. How soon you will need to comply will depend on a number of factors. Topics of this workshop will include the new rules and regulations on produce safety risk factors and

impacts; post-harvest produce handling; water quality, testing, and sanitation choices; soil and manure management; worker health and hygiene; creating a food safety plan; and gearing up for a thirdparty audit. Workshops will be held on Mondays, January 11, 18, 25, and February 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. You may attend the workshops from your home.

SOUTHERN GOSPEL 4 U NEW YEARS EVE CONCERT Southern Gospel 4 U will present "New Years Eve Southern Style" on Thursday, December 31 at 7 p.m. at River of Life Family Church. GSSI ROBOTICS SUCCESS IS SYMBOL OF COMMITMENT TO GIRLS' FUTURES Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois robotics program has had great success so far this year. During recent FIRST LEGO League (FLL) tournaments for 9-14 year olds, four of ten competing teams won awards and one squad qualified for the state tournament. A team of older girls in the FIRST TECH Challenge (FTC) league starts competition in January and has been busy giving demonstrations of their robot design and programming skills – including marching with their scene-stealing “candy cannon” in several holiday parades. GSSI is also gearing up to host a Jr FIRST LEGO League Expo (a science fair style robotics event for students age 6-9) for the southern Illinois region. GSSI’s “robot revolution” is indicative of the Girl Scout movement’s ongoing commitment to bringing girls relevant, exciting opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This November and December, ten GSSI teams competed in FIRST LEGO League regional tourna-

ments: Coding Catricorns and Coach Scott Gilbert, Carbondale; Fire Breathing Hexicorns and Coach Julie Herr, Belleville; Flower STEMs and Coach Megan Terrell of O'Fallon; GIR! and Coach Jason Dothager, Staunton; Knights of the Round LEGO and Coach Winnie Kenney, O'Fallon; Lightning Storm and Coach Sarah Klosterman, Belleville; Purple Robot Penguins and Coach Larry Buchanan, O'Fallon; Robots of the Round Table and Coach Celeste Borders, An na ; Sup e r We i rd Awesome Tinkerbots (SWAT) and Coach Krysti C onnel ly, Troy and Undercover Upcyclers and Coach Jill Thomas, Albers. Three additional teams hosted by GSSI participated in the FLL program, but elected not to compete. (Metro East teams were funded by The Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company). During regional competition, GIR! won a Core Values Award for best representing the FLL’s cornerstone values, SWAT won a Project Award for their superb research project

and presentation, Knights of the Round LEGO won a Rookie Award for best first year team and Purple Robot Penguins won a Champion’s Award and Performance Award for top Robot Game Score; the team also qualified for the State Tournament on Jan. 23 at University of Illinois. "Our FLL program is having an amazing year," said STEM Program Manager Mary Buchanan, who oversees GSSI’s robotics program. She added in addition to the thrill of winning awards, she is also pleased to see the program is also growing geographically. “We’ve expanded into two new areas in the southern part of our jurisdiction — Anna and Carbondale. We would love to continue expanding the robotics program throughout the council because girls love the exciting, team-oriented STEM challenges it offers." Buchanan also noted that GSSI's robotics program has gotten more men involved with Girl Scouts. "More than half of our robotics teams — including our FIRST TECH Challenge team for older girls — has had a father

coaching," she said. "Seeing more dads participating and helping build girls' confidence and skills in STEM is great!" Career opportunities related to STEM fields are expected to continue to grow and studies show they pay 33% more than non-STEM jobs. However, a recent survey by the Girl Scouts Research Institute found that while 74% of high school girls are interested in STEM, less than a quarter of jobs in that field are filled by women. Girl Scouts offers numerous program opportunities to encourage more girls to follow their interests to build for a successful future. At GSSI, robotics is one of many STEM opportunities that girls have to explore. Other programs offered throughout the year include activities such as simple circuit wiring, exploring forensics, digital movie making, learning

more about wildlife and nature and even STEM and art. The council also offers two STEM day camps during the summer, this year’s offerings being “STEM Explosions 4: The Hammer of Thor” for girls grades 4-12 on July 25-29 and “Mini STEM Explosions 3” for girls in grades K-3 on July 7-8. "We're so grateful for all of the parents, volunteers

and supporters who invest in our robotics program and other STEM activities," said Buchanan. "Studies show that girls actually do have a high interest in STEM activities, despite the stereotype. Providing them with role models, encouragement and interesting challenges helps develop this interest and opens their minds to future opportunities."

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Christmas Story The Christmas story of the birth of Jesus Christ has inspired a scountless number of songs, literature, music, and selfless and noble deeds. Millions of lives have been transformed by the babe born in a stable. The Christmas story is His story, the birth of Christ, Immanuel, “God with us.” Ancient prophecies foretold, with pin-point accuracy, the virgin birth, the exact village and the surrounding events as well as the descriptive names of Christ. (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7; Micah 5:2) The gospels give us the miraculous details of the Christmas Story. Each Christmas Eve, my wife and I have read the biblical narrative of the Christmas story. The great Christmas carol, “Joy to the World” by Isaac Watts and George F Handel, calls us to rejoice in the incarnation of Christ. The third verse focuses our attention on the reason for His coming. “No more let sins and sorrows grow; nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make, His blessings flow; Far as the curse is

1. Is the book of Luke in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Matthew 1:18, when Mary became pregnant, she and Joseph were ... ? Married, Engaged, Just friends, Strangers 3. For the journey to Bethlehem, how did

found; Far as the curse is found; Far as, far as the curse is found.” A Christmas wreath is a perfect symbol for the season. It is a symbol of eternal life. But the crown of thorns is the reason for the season; for Christ came to die for the sins of the world and bear the curse of sin for all who will believe. (John 3:16) The classic movie, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” portrays the Christmas story in a simple and moving way as they act out the gospel narrative. This Christmas season read the scripture narrative and, as Mary did, ponder some of these glorious events of the Christmas story. THE SOVEREIGN LORD CONDUCTED AND ORCHESTRATED THE EVENTS OF CHRISTMAS. The providence of God directed Joseph to take Mary to be registered by

the decree of Caesar Augustus. “And she brought forth her first born Son and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:1-) If God can orchestrate all of the events of Christmas, can’t you trust Him to direct your life? The Lord of heaven was born in a stable. To have a stable life and a stable family, bow before the one born in a stable. Don’t be like the innkeeper who had no room for Christ. THE SHEPHERDS WERE THE FIRST TO HEAR THE GOOD NEWS OF CHRIST’S BIRTH. “Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.” (Luke 2:8-10) The angels first appeared to lowly, ordinary shepherds. Christ came to preach the gospel to the poor, needy, and ordinary men like most of us. This boggles my mind and thrills my soul. THE SAVIOR IS BORN. “The angels announced, ‘For there is born to you this day, in the city of David, a

Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” (Luke 2:11) Jesus was born to be the Savior. The angel announced to Joseph, “And you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21) Without the crown of thorns that He wore there would be no Christmas wreath of eternal life. We need a Savior! THE "SUDDENLY" SOUND FROM H E AV E N S U R ROU N DI NG T H E SHEPHERDS. “And suddenly there was with the angels a multitude of heavenly host praising God and saying ‘Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.’” (Luke 2:13-14) Many times God displays His glory when suddenly heaven comes down. When these moments come to your life, like the shepherds, seek Christ and worship and proclaim His glory to all you meet. (Luke 2:15-20) For the Christmas story is His story. I bought them at a your thoughts? — Maryanne, Tyler, Texas A: The Hull Pottery Company produced many novelty items depicting fowl, but swans probably became the most widely produced design. The swans came in various sizes. I found your swans in "War man's Hull Pottery: Identification & Price Guide" by David Doyle and published by Krause Books. According to Doyle, your planters are worth $10 to $25 each. *** Q: I inherited my uncle's record collection, which includes discs from the early years of the past century. Most are opera or classical selections, and some are recorded only on one side of the disc. Is there a market for them? -- Jane, via e-mail A: Probably not. Most acoustical recordings from this period have very little value. For example, there is the mistaken belief that all Caruso recordings on Victor are priceless. They aren't. In fact, many are only worth a dollar or two each. On the Zonophone label, however, Caruso is worth his weight in gold. I suggest you donate the recordings to a charity. *** Q: I bought a Jadite spice set at a flea market for $10. It was so cheap, I'm having doubts about

it being authentic. — Sarah, Phoenix, Arizona A: Although only an expert can determine if your Jadite is fake or the real McCoy, this type of pale green, opaque glass has been mass-produced in both China and the United States since 1999. You might want to consult the "Guide to Fakes & Reproductions," 4th edition, by Mark Chervenka, published by KP Books. It has a lengthy chapter, complete with illustrations, documenting Jadite and the reproductions that are flooding marketplaces throughout the country. *** Q: I have several thousand matchbook covers. How can I find out how much they are worth? — Niles, Palmetto, Florida A: One of the better reference books is "The Matchcover Collector's Price Guide: The Comprehensive Reference Book and Price Guide to Matchcovers" by Bill Retskin, now in its 2nd edition. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. The last debates of the year, both Republican and Democrat, were held last week. In my opinion, neither one was anything to write home about. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, CNN hosted the Republican debate, and on Saturday, December 19 — in the midst of a John Lennon 75th birthday concert, football games, last minute Christmas shopping, wrapping presents, parties and baking cookies — ABC News hosted the Democratic debate. On Tuesday, December 15, the Republican debate stage consisted of Rand Paul, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush?, Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina and John Kasich. The ground rules were presented and they were off. (Sounds like a horse race.) CNN teaming up with Facebook, the questions started. The first question went to Donald Trump and he answered with his usual enthusiasm! The main point driven home during the debate was that anyone on the stage that night would make a better Commander in Chief than Obama or Hillary Clinton. And to that I agree! However, backing up, I don't know what keeps some of them in this race, especially Jeb Bush and Rand Paul. What I found interesting was the love fest between Trump and Ted Cruz. Reading between the lines, there could be more to this than meets the eye. Does Cruz have his eye on the position of running mate? Time will tell. The main thing I took away from the CNN debate was I personally don't think Americans will vote for

Trump's name was mentioned nine different times. I'm sure he loved it! During the evening, Clinton dodged two questions on Libya, lied about the ISIS recruitment video and tap danced the night away, along with O'Malley who felt he didn't get equal time. Sanders accused the GOP as being far right, from the king of the far left. That was rich! But the jewel of the evening was Hillary coming back late after the first break! Gosh, what I could do with this one on Saturday Night Live! Who was the most honest during the debate? I'd call it for Sanders. And the early polls reflected that Sanders On to the Saturday came out on top! evening Democratic debate hosted by ABC News. So with all the above said, in my opinion, after watching the debate in its entirety, I would have to say Donald Trump was the clear winner, with Cruz and Christie falling just behind. Then came Carson, Carly and Rubio, with John Kasich, Jeb Bush and Rand Paul falling behind the second tier! A point Trump drove home was that he would stick with the Republican Party no matter what. Hmmm!!! I've got to say I think that's questionable.

The Story Of The Birth Of Jesus

Wishing You A Merry Christmas

Mt. Vernon M Dairy Queen

Jesus’ Arrival According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son, while in the stable. She wrapped him in cloth and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them.

Christmas traditions focus on several different aspects of family and spiritual life. While many stories are shared around Christmastime, perhaps none bears more significance than the origin of the Christmas celebration. Sharing the Christmas story is an integral part of holiday gatherings, reminding families that faith is foremost during this festive time of year. The Conception of Jesus Mary was a woman living in the Galilee area of Nazareth. She was engaged to a Jewish carpenter named Joseph. An angel visited the Virgin Mary and told her that she would conceive a child — a son — by the power of the Holy Spirit. When the son was born, she would name him Jesus. Mary questioned the angel, who reassured her that anything was possible by God and that Jesus would be God’s own son. Joseph was troubled when he found out Mary was with child and even considered breaking their engagement, which was allowed under Jewish law. But God soon sent another angel, this time to Joseph, in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph that his marriage to Mary and the birth of this child were His will. Joseph awoke from his dream and took Mary as his wife soon after, ready and willing to raise the child despite the public humiliation he may experience. The Census During this time the Romans had control over many parts of the world, including where Joseph and Mary resided. Ruler Caesar Augustus decreed that every person living under Roman rule had to return to his town of origin to participate in a census so everyone could be taxed accordingly. Joseph, hailing from Bethlehem, had to return to this town with his very pregnant bride. They traveled for many days and, upon arriving in Bethlehem, found that the inns were full and there was no available lodging. Mary and Joseph took shelter in a stable and prepared to welcome their son.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. — Luke Chapter 2 Many people visited the baby Jesus, including three wise men from the East who traveled by following a guiding star to bestow gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on the baby king. When Joseph and Mary had performed all the things necessary according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Nazareth with Jesus, who was growing strong in spirit and filled with wisdom and the grace of God.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your Gemini Twin nature rallies to help you deal with this week’s hectic schedules, both in your personal and professional lives. One caution: Watch your diet. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid rushing to make up for time lost on a stalled workplace operation. Best to set up a schedule and pace yourself. Welcome the help of colleagues. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Despite those glittering holiday distractions you love so well, be sure to keep your feline senses set on high to alert you to anything that might require fast action. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making an effort to restore fraying relationships proves to be more successful than you dared hope. The holidays also bring new friends into your life. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Private and professional matters compete for your attention. Be

honest in your assessment of which should get more of it, and for how long. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A seemingly endless list of must-do tasks is best handled by tackling them one by one, and taking energy-restoring timeouts between each job. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A vexing relationship seems destined to deteriorate no matter what each side tries to do. A third party’s advice just might prove helpful. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Reach out to ease any tensions caused by home or workplace pressures before they threaten the relationship-building progress you’ve made. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You often go out of your way to show kindness to others. So, don’t be surprised if other people want to do something nice for you this week. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) People in your life respect your Piscean wisdom, so don’t hesitate to speak up about a matter that you feel isn’t being handled quite the way it should be. BORN THIS WEEK: Your personal warmth helps you make friendships, and your sense of fair play helps you keep them. Š 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was beloved American singer, songwriter and musician Ray Charles who made the following sage observation: "Marriage is like college; as great as it is, it ain't for everybody." • Those who study such things say that when a llama is humming, that means it's content. • If you think life in the Big Apple is tough these days, consider this: In the 1930s, land-

lords evicted about 17,000 tenants every month. • It's the little details that can make or break a plan. A pair of aspiring bank robbers in Daytona Beach, Florida, walked into a bank, pulled out guns, demanded that a teller hand over the loot, and even made it out of the building. The problem came when they got in their getaway car; the engine sputtered and died almost immediately. It seems someone had forgotten to fill up the gas tank. • The gray squirrel isn't always gray; these arboreal rodents also come in both black and white varieties. • Sharks have been known to attack boats

before, but they rarely, if ever, try for a second bite — regardless of what Hollywood would have you believe. When a shark goes for a boat, it's a case of mistaken identity: electrical impulses from the metal of a ship's hull make the shark think that the boat is another animal (that is to say: dinner). • If you're fond of fancy cocktails, you probably won't be surprised to learn that the words "mai tai" are actually Tahitian for "the very best.". *** Thought for the Day: "I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared, and then he is gone."— Dwight D. Eisenhower Š 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
