the inside, nor was he going to spend a large amount of time above the rim. What Curry was able to do was watch his father, Dell Curry, a former NBA star in his own right, and learn how to practice, practice, practice his jump shot, his three-pointer, his passing. That was something he could control. It's paid off in recordsmashing ways ... in fact, he is in a league of his own. His record 286 three-pointers in 2015 surpassed the old mark of 272, set by Stephen Curry himself in 2013. Hands down the league MVP in 2015 and The Associated Press Athlete of the Year, Curry has become the smiling, family-oriented face of the league. The only scary thing about Curry is that he is improving at a record pace. This season he is averaging more than 30 points per game ... a full seven points higher than his championship-winning MVP season. No fulltime NBA player has ever improved that much in one season, and at 27 years old, it's safe to say that the best is yet to come for young Master Curry.

have strong starting pitching or bleacherblast ing home-r un hitters on your roster? A superstar quarterback and receiving corps to match, or a sack-happy defensive line with shutdown corners? A prolific goal scorer or a brick wall of a backstop in front of the net? Luckily for us, the NHL has this stuff all figured out. They have this thing called the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the most valuable player to his team. Last year, the league decided that Montreal goalie Carey Price was such a guy. He buried Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin in first-place votes (139-8) and led the league in wins, goals against average and save percentage — a feat not equaled since Ed Belfour did it in 1991. Price set the Canadians' record for wins in a season (44, also the NHL season best), not bad considering that the Canadians have a tiny bit of history and lore surrounding the franchise. There's no joke to be made here; picking Price was not wrong.

4. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, in 2015, became the first NCAA men's basketball coach to record 1,000 career victories. Who was the second? 5. In the 2014-15 NHL season, only one player for the New Jersey Devils tallied more than 20 goals. Who was it? 6. Which country has won the most Winter Olympic medals overall? 7. In 2015, Jordan Spieth became the sixth male golfer to win the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year. Name three of the other five to do it.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Baptist's Secrets to Joy As we listen to John the Baptist, we can discover his secrets to joy. (John 3:22-26) Where did John get his name "the Baptist"? John the Baptist was prophesied to be the forerunner of Christ, who called people to repent and be baptized to prepare the way of the Lord. (Matthew 3:1-6) When John the Baptist's ministry came to a close, he concluded it with these words, "Therefore, this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase but I must decrease." (John 3:30) Would you like to experience a lasting joy? Apply John the Baptist's secrets to joy.

First — REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED. John made it clear that water baptism without repenting of sin was powerless to change one's life. "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! . . . And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins." (John 2:2, 6) Water baptism is a picture of one's death to self and sin; an identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and a public confession of Jesus Christ as one's Savior and Lord. Have you observed the joyful faces of those who have truly repented of their sins and come up out of the baptismal waters? The angels in heaven! (Luke 15:10)

2. From Judges 16, how many locks of hair did Delilah have cut from the mighty Samson's head? 1, 3, 5, 7 3. Who made a great throne with a lion standing beside each armrest? Abraham, Solomon, 1. Is the book of John Joshua, Daniel in the Old or New 4. Where were the first Testament or neither? of Jesus' disciples — From every point on earth we are equally near to heaven and to the infinite. –Henry F. Amiel

3

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area David declared, "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered." (Psalm 32:1-2) Second — REALIZE THAT ANYTHING OF LASTING VALUE CAN ONLY COME FROM HEAVEN. The disciples of John told him that multitudes were following Jesus and being baptized beyond the Jordan River. (John 3:27-28) They were jealous for John's ministry. But John was joyful! His mission was coming to a close. If something you cherish comes to a close, trust God that He has something else for you. When God closes one door, He opens another. Realize that it's not about you, it's all about Jesus! Have John's attitude, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven . . . I am not the Christ." Third — REJOICE TO HEAR THE BRIDEGROOM'S VOICE. (John 3:29-30, 32) A wedding is not about the best man or maid of honor, or how

beautiful the wedding party looks. No, it's about the vows or testimony of the groom's and the bride's love and commitment to each other. To have continuing joy in your heart hear each day the bridegroom's voice — Jesus Christ. "His sheep hear his voice." (John 10:27-28) He speaks constantly through his Word. Just days before her death, the late poet, Maya Angelou said, "Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God." Do you rejoice to hear the heavenly bridegroom's voice? Fourth — REDUCE ME TO LOVE. John the Baptist shared one of the greatest secrets to abounding joy when he said,

"Therefore my joy is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all." (John 3:30) Our greatest enemy to joy is self. Years ago, as a youth pastor, we sang a popular song that had the refrain, "reduce me to love." John gave us the key to incredible, abounding joy, Jesus must increase, but I must decrease. Let us make that our prayer and goal. Fifth — RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. Speaking of Jesus, John said, that to Jesus, God gave the Spirit without measure. (John 3:34) John the Baptist was filled with Spirit while in his mother's womb. On the day of Pentecost Peter gave us this wonderful promise, "Repent and let

everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38-39) The Holy Spirit is the source of abiding joy. (Ephesians 5:17-20) Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and abound in joy. John the Baptist's secrets to joy are the way to everlasting life. "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:36) Believe! Super Salads I love the holidays, but unfortunately, I also love all the wonderful foods that go along with the season. So from mid-October (Halloween) till after the first of the new year, I can bank on an additional ten pounds, a side effect of all those goodies. Around this time every year, my goal is to get rid of those happy pounds before my husband starts calling me groceries. So here we go with soups and salads, which I really don't mind. Keep in mind that salads aren't always low in calories; however, they are healthy and good for you. Some of my favorites are below.

What a week! Since I wrote last week's column here's what has happened: Obama's State of the Union, another GOP Presidential Debate, the stock market falls big, ten U.S. sailors captured and released in 24 hours, Iran to receive sanctions, four American hostages in Iran released, the fourth Democratic Presidential debate and the movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. First up, Obama's State of the Union. Or should I say Obama's "lecture to the nation about the future after me." After a few minutes reviewing his accomplishments of the past seven plus years, he pivoted to his four directives for the next President. 1. Provide a fair shot for everyone in the "new" economy. 2. Make technology work for America. 3. Keep America safe without being the policeman of the world. 4. Make politics reflect what is best in us, not worst. All honorable general concepts, but I think I remember President Reagan, or was it President Kennedy saying about the same things. So much for the State of the Union. Maybe Obama will talk about the State of the Union in his next lecture.

the stage. Why was John Kasich there anyway? It appears the real fight is going to come down to Trump, Cruz and Rubio unless something remarkable happens. These three dominated the time and energy in this debate.

Next up, last Thursday's GOP Presidential Debate. They're down to seven candidates at the head table and I think down to five on the next debate, with Kasich and Bush being pushed off

The Fourth Democratic Presidential Debate was held Sunday night. Although with raised voices at times, and Bernie and Hillary jabbing each other over health care, guns and

T h e sto ck m ar ke t dropped, especially last Friday. Is it time for a correction or was it all about China? And has China finally realized and have we, that they can manipulate the economy even more than once thought? Stay tuned! We held our breath as the report came in that ten American sailors were captured (detained) and, as reported, released within 24 hours. The excuse, "We didn't know we drifted into Iranian waters" made me and probably most of us wonder what the real story was. Will we ever know? With economic sanctions being lifted for Iran and billions paid, the four long term American hostages were released. Was their release "baked in the cake" as a side deal of the major Iranian deal, and I wonder how much (We don't negotiate with terrorists) their release actually cost us. But no matter what, we as Americans are overjoyed with their release.

Wall Street, many times they said, "I agree with you." The Democratic Debate reminds me of a family argument, with everyone kissing and making up at the end. And they even let t he youngest fami ly member (Martin O'Malley) get some words in and they made him feel good. Bernie and Hillary probably didn't change any in the polls as the fight was considered a draw. But the quote of the night was from Hillary:"There should be no banks too big to fail and no one too big to go to jail!" Really! Really, Hillary! Was this a Freudian slip or are you predicting your future! And speaking of jail, if you haven't seen the movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, make plans to do so. You'll get a firsthand look at how this current administration operated. And to think Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and others watched this Benghazi atrocity unfold in real time and did nothing is beyond me. It's the real story. That Hillary Clinton would run for President is sheer arrogance on her part and what's worse, there will be people that vote for her. What happened in Libya started ISIS. Until next week. AREA WOMAN IS GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD ADVISOR EXTRAORDINAIRE Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and a rou n d t h e w or l d through their Girl Scout Gold Award projects. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. As the Girl Scout Gold Award celebrates 100 years of girls changing the world, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) is highlighting some of our shining stars who exemplify the greatness of this award. 22…2008…19…100… These numbers may sound random to most people, but for Girl Scout Vo lu nt e e r Ka r l e n e Hoefener from O’Fallon they each have a significant meaning. 22 — Karlene Hoefener has been a Girl Scout Volunteer for 22 years, most of those years in her current hometown of O’Fallon, IL. In that time, she has held many volunteer positions such as Assistant Cook at camp weekends, Day Camp Director, Service Unit Cookie Chair and Troop Leader, just to name a few. Karlene is obviously passionate about the entire Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and her dedication to improving the lives of girls is something to be commended. 2008 — This is the year that marked the beginning of Karlene’s adventure as a Girl Scout Gold Aw a r d A d v i s o r. Mentoring girls through their Girl Scout Gold Award journey takes dedication. To earn the award, a Girl Scout Senior or Girl Scout Ambassador must design and carry out a project that fulfills a need within her community, creates change and is sustainable. The project must be com-

ARTISTS ON LOVE SIU-C MUSEUM EXHIBIT

The University Museum at S out her n Il linois University Carbondale opens the spring 2016 exhibit season with Artists on Love, a look at artistic expressions of love nestled in the museum’s archives and solicited from the campus and community. Alison Erazmus, curator of exhibits, put this exhibit together. Most exhibits for the spring semester open Jan. 22 and run through Mar. 6. • Dan Johnson: Consideration of Place. Amy and Samantha are both former Girl Scouts, and Samantha is also a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient.

pleted with a suggested minimum of 80 hours of work. Only about 5 percent of eligible girls earn the prestigious Gold Award, and their advisor plays a key role. Karlene states, “As a Girl Scout Leader our role is to always be there for the girls to encourage them, support them, guide them and listen to them. Being a Girl Scout Gold Award Advisor is just that!” 19 — Karlene has mentored 19 girls through their entire Girl Scout Gold Award project. That number continues to grow as she has another Girl Scout who is actively working on her Gold Award project and five additional girls that are researching projects to begin earning their award. Projects that Karlene has advised included working with special needs students, helping Alzheimer’s patients, making recordings to assist the blind, antibullying campaigns in local grade schools and many, many more. “For me, the best part of being a Girl Scout Gold Award Advisor is seeing the excitement in the girl’s eyes when she does something she did not think she could do. That is why I stay in Girl Scouting — to see girls’ excitement when they achieve goals no matter how big or small.” 100 — As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of

the Girl Scout Gold Award, Karlene encourages other adults to consider making a difference in a girl’s life by mentoring her through her Girl S cout G old Award project. Also, she’d like to encourage all Girl S couts to consider earning their Gold Award. Karlene adds, “The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award you can earn as a Girl Scout — what better way to end your Girl Scout experience than to say you did it all!” Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is the largest voluntary organization for girls in the world. Its sole focus is to meet the needs of all girls (ages 5-17) from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. Girl Scouting is the place where girls experience the fun, friendship and power of girls together. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a not-for-profit organization supported by various United Ways throughout the region. Girl Scouts is a Proud Partner of United Way. Guinea Pig’s Death Sparks Questions DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: Tonight our dear guinea pig “Sparks” had a heart attack and left us within a couple of hours. There was no chance to take her to an emergency vet. Is tension in the house a cause of heart attack in guinea pigs? Is there anything we could have done to prevent this? — Yamile, via email DEAR YAMILE: I’m sorry to hear of Sparks’ death. I’ll try to offer some explanation why, and I encourage my readers to send their advice as well. Heart attack (and stroke) are, sadly, very common caus es of

sudden death in guinea pigs, a.k.a. cavies. Cavies are very sensitive to their environment, particularly changes in temperature. Being unable to rest peacefully also causes stress that affects their system. In short, cavies love a comfor table routine and a rest area sheltered from light and noise. Deficiencies in diet also can be a factor. This can get tricky, so speaking with other cavy owners or vets who specialize in them can help deduce whether a cavy needs a specific type of feed or supplement (too much can be as bad as too little). Because it’s often hard to detect illness in cavies until they suddenly decline, you should learn a bit of “cavy first aid.” One important step when a cavy takes ill is to contact the vet by phone first and describe the symptoms. Sometimes a cavy is too ill to safely be

transported. The vet might tell you to make your pet comfortable and wait out a very long night — not because he or she

Q: I have a 50-piece set of ruby glass. Several years ago, I was offered $75 per glass, but I want to sell the entire set. Any suggestions? — Marily n, Sonoma, California A: Ruby glass is a flashed glass, deeply red in color, and was manufactured by numerous companies beginning during the 1890s and continuing through the 1940s. Although it is sometimes confused with red carnival glass, it is made differently and is not the same. Values are tricky. It might be a good idea to consult the numerous price guides available and

monitor ruby glass prices on eBay. Another suggestion is to contact a certified appraiser who specializes in glass. Although you will pay a nominal fee, you will get an expert's opinion of what your collection is worth. *** Q: Can you recommend a good price guide for comics. My son has a collection of about 75 vintage issues, and I think we should investigate to see what the current values are. — Susan, Springfield, Missouri A: There are three comic references I consult on a regular basis: "Golden Age Comics" by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause Books); "Official

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects call for care in preparing material for submission. Although you might find it bothersome to go over what you’ve done, the fact is, rechecking could be worth your time and effort. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The week is favorable for Bovines who welcome change. New career opportunities wait to be checked out. You also might want to get started on that home makeover you’ve been considering. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might have to be extra careful to protect that surprise you have planned, thanks to a certain snoopy someone who wants to know more about your plans than you’re willing to share. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Family ties are strong this week, although an old and still-unresolved problem might create some unpleasant moments. If so, look to straighten the situation out once and for all. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Lion might see it as an act of loyalty and courage to hold on to an increasingly shaky position, it might be wiser to make changes now to prevent a possible meltdown later. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your gift for adding new people to your circle of friends works overtime this week, thanks largely to contacts you made during the holidays. A surprise awaits you at the week’s end. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t hide your talents. It’s a

good time to show what you can do to impress people who can do a lot for you. A dispute with a family member might still need some smoothing over. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be open with your colleagues about your plan to bring a workplace matter out into the open. You’ll want their support, and they’ll want to know how you’ll pull it off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Trying to patch up an unraveling relationship is often easier said than done. But it helps to discuss and work out any problems that arise along the way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While your creative aspect remains high this week, you might want to call on your practical side to help work out the why and wherefore of an upcoming decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Dealing with someone’s disappointment can be difficult for Aquarians, who always try to avoid giving pain. But a full explanation and a show of sympathy can work wonders. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a job-related matter past some major obstacles should be easier this week. A personal situation might take a surprising but not necessarily unwelcome turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be both a dreamer and a doer.
