The (Indoor) Players Club It's the beginning of the year and we, as sports fans, know what that means: It's time to take a look back at last year's great plays and the players who made them, lest we forget. This week we profile two instant legends from the hard court and the rink. Basketball: Stephen Curry How good is Stephen Curry? So good that visiting markets broadcast his warm-up routine. So good that he put Davidson College on the map (at least in theor y) and gave Oakland its first basketball championship in four decades. So good that Mark Jackson, a former NBA AllStar and coach (including Curry's), openly fretted that "he's ruining the game" of basketball. Yes, you read that right. Kim Kardashian breaks the Internet, children break toys, and Stephen Curry breaks basketball. How does he do it? Curry is 6 feet, 3 inches

— not a giant by any means — so he knew from the start of his career that he was not going to rely on his physicality to dominate on the inside, nor was he going to spend a large amount of time above the rim. What Curry was able to do was watch his father, Dell Curry, a former NBA star in his own right, and learn how to practice, practice, practice his jump shot, his threepointer, his passing. That was something he could control. It's paid off in recordsmashing ways ... in fact, he is in a league of his own. His record 286 three-pointers in 2015 surpassed the old mark of 272, set by Stephen Curry himself in 2013. Hands down the league MVP in 2015 and The Associated Press Athlete of the Year, Curry has become the smiling, family-oriented face of the league. The only scary thing about Curry is that he is improving at a record pace. This season he is averaging more than 30 points per game ... a full seven points higher than his championshipwinning MVP season. No

Hockey: Casey Price It's the age-old quandary: Would you rather have strong starting pitching or bleacher-blasting homerun hitters on your roster? A superstar quarterback and receiving corps to match, or a sack-happy defensive line with shutdown corners? A prolific goal scorer or a brick wall of a backstop in front of the net? Luckily for us, the NHL has this stuff all figured out. They have this thing called the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the most valuable player to his team. Last year, the league decided that Montreal goalie Carey Price was such a guy. He buried Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin in first-place votes (139-8) and led the league in wins, goals against average and save percentage — a feat not equaled since Ed Belfour did it in 1991. Price set the Canadians' record for wins in a season (44, also the NHL season best), not bad considering that the Canadians have a tiny bit of history and lore surrounding the franchise. There's no joke to be made here; picking Price was not wrong. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Super Salads I love the holidays, but unfortunately, I also love all the wonderful foods that go along with the season. So from mid-October (Halloween) till after the first of the new year, I can bank on an additional ten pounds, a side effect of all those goodies. Around this time every year, my goal is to get rid of those happy pounds before my husband starts calling me groceries. So here we go with soups and salads, which I really don't mind. Keep in mind that salads aren't always low in calories; however, they are healthy and good for you. Some of my favorites are below.

Special Spinach Salad 1 (6 oz.) pkg. baby spinach leaves 3/4 cup pomegranate seeds 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

3 slices bacon, cooked, crumbled 3 green onions, sliced 1/3 cup balsamic vinaigrette dressing

Toss spinach with all remaining ingredients except dressing in large bowl. Add dressing just before serving; mix lightly. Nutrition bonus: The spinach in this side salad is rich in both vitamins A and C. Makes 6 servings, about 1 cup each.

Sugar Snap Sauté 2 tsp. olive oil 3/4 lb. fresh sugar snap peas 1 red pepper, cut into thin strips

1/2 cup sliced shallots 1/4 cup light Asian toasted sesame dressing 1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted

Heat oil in large nonstick skillet on medium heat. Add vegetables; stir-fry 6 to 7 min. or until crisp-tender. Stir in dressing; cook 1 min. or until heated through. Top with nuts. Special Extra: Add 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper with the dressing. Makes 6 servings, 1/2 cup each.

Apple Cranberry Salad 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 1 T. sugar 3 apples (preferably 2 red and 1 green), chopped 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1 stalk celery, thinly sliced 6 leaf lettuce leaves Mix mayonnaise, sour cream and sugar in medium bowl. Stir in all remaining ingredients except lettuce. Refrigerate 2 hours. Serve over lettuce. Healthy living: Save calories and fat by using reduced fat mayonnaise with olive oil and reduced fat or light sour cream. Substitute: Prepare using Boston lettuce. Makes 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. By Larry Cox Ruby Glass Q: I have a 50-piece set of ruby glass. Several years ago, I was offered $75 per glass, but I want to sell the entire set. Any suggestions? — Marily n, Sonoma, California A: Ruby glass is a flashed glass, deeply red in color, and was manufactured by numerous companies beginning during the 1890s and continuing through the 1940s. Although it is sometimes confused with red carnival glass, it is made differently and is not the same. Values are tricky. It might be a good idea to consult the numerous price

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

guides available and monitor ruby glass prices on eBay. Another suggestion is to contact a certified appraiser who specializes in glass. Although you will pay a nominal fee, you will get an expert's opinion of what your collection is worth. *** Q: Can you recommend a good price guide for comics. My son has a collection of about 75 vintage issues, and I think we should investigate to see what the current values are. — Susan, Springfield, Missouri A: There are three comic references I consult on a regular basis: "Golden Age Comics" by Alex G. Malloy

and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause Books); "Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide" by Robert W. Overstreet (House of Collectibles); and "Comic Book Checklist and Price Guide" by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhoff and Peter Bickford (Krause Books). Since prices can vary from region to region, don't assume values listed are chiseled in stone. Also, don't hesitate to contact established comic-book dealers in your area. *** Q: I recently purchased four pieces of McCoy pottery at a yard sale. In addition to a large mixing bowl, I bought a pitcher with

matching mug and a cookie jar shaped like a strawberry. I spent a total of $35 for the four pieces and hope it was a good deal. — Becky, Little Rock, Arkansas A: Although I have several guidebooks for this type of pottery, my personal favorite is "Warman's McCoy Potter y," 2nd edition, by Mark F. Moran and published by KP Books. Your strawberry cookie jar was crafted during the 1950s and is valued in the $80 to $100 range, per Moran. It sounds like you made an excellent buy. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. SENIOR CITIZENS DAY! Every Wednesday! Save 10%.

What a week! Since I wrote last week's column here's what has happened: Obama's State of the Union, another GOP Presidential Debate, the stock market falls big, ten U.S. sailors captured and released in 24 hours, Iran to receive sanctions, four American hostages in Iran released, the fourth Democratic Presidential debate and the movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. First up, Obama's State of the Union. Or should I say Obama's "lecture to the nation about the future after me." After a few minutes reviewing his accomplishments of the past seven plus years, he pivoted to his four directives for the next President. 1. Provide a fair shot for everyone in the "new" economy. 2. Make technology work for America. 3. Keep America safe without being the policeman of the world. 4. Make politics reflect what is best in us, not worst. All honorable general concepts, but I think I remember President Reagan, or was it President Kennedy saying about the same things. So much for the State of the Union. Maybe Obama will talk about the State of the Union in his next lecture.

the stage. Why was John Kasich there anyway? It appears the real fight is going to come down to Trump, Cruz and Rubio unless something remarkable happens. These three dominated the time and energy in this debate.

Next up, last Thursday's GOP Presidential Debate. They're down to seven candidates at the head table and I think down to five on the next debate, with Kasich and Bush being pushed off

The Fourth Democratic Presidential Debate was held Sunday night. Although with raised voices at times, and Bernie and Hillary jabbing each other over health care, guns and

T h e sto ck m ar ke t dropped, especially last Friday. Is it time for a correction or was it all about China? And has China finally realized and have we, that they can manipulate the economy even more than once thought? Stay tuned! We held our breath as the report came in that ten American sailors were captured (detained) and, as reported, released within 24 hours. The excuse, "We didn't know we drifted into Iranian waters" made me and probably most of us wonder what the real story was. Will we ever know? With economic sanctions being lifted for Iran and billions paid, the four long term American hostages were released. Was their release "baked in the cake" as a side deal of the major Iranian deal, and I wonder how much (We don't negotiate with terrorists) their release actually cost us. But no matter what, we as Americans are overjoyed with their release.

Wall Street, many times they said, "I agree with you." The Democratic Debate reminds me of a family argument, with everyone kissing and making up at the end. And they even let t he youngest fami ly member (Martin O'Malley) get some words in and they made him feel good. Bernie and Hillary probably didn't change any in the polls as the fight was considered a draw. But the quote of the night was from Hillary:"There should be no banks too big to fail and no one too big to go to jail!" Really! Really, Hillary! Was this a Freudian slip or are you predicting your future! And speaking of jail, if you haven't seen the movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, make plans to do so. You'll get a firsthand look at how this current administration operated. And to think Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and others watched this Benghazi atrocity unfold in real time and did nothing is beyond me. It's the real story. That Hillary Clinton would run for President is sheer arrogance on her part and what's worse, there will be people that vote for her. What happened in Libya started ISIS. Until next week. THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH SOCIAL SECURITY’S ONLINE SERVICES

First National Bank of Sandoval Sa

BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MOUNT VERNON, IL

“There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it?” This winter, Americans of all generations are awakening to the newest film in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Many readers probably remember seeing the first Star Wars film in theaters in 1977. Audiences watched with fascination at the advanced technology used by the Jedi and Sith in a galaxy far, far away. We still don’t have interstellar travel, personal robots, or holographic communication, but we now use technology in our daily lives that would have seemed like science fiction in 1977. At that time, it would still be years until the modern Internet and smart phones would be part of our lives. Now, many of us can’t imagine life without such technology. Many people who need to do business with Social Security are finding an awakening of sorts in how easy it is to use our online services. We continually expand our online services

to reflect changing customer needs, and to provide you with world-class service that would even have interplanetary traveler Han Solo saying, “Chewie, we’re home.” Our online services are convenient and secure, and allow you to conduct much of your business with us from the comfort of your home, office, or space freighter. (Not all services are available in all galaxies). For instance, you can use our website at www. socialsecurity.gov to apply for retirement, spouse’s, or disability benefits online. You can also apply for Medicare and Extra Help with your Medicare prescription drug costs on our website. We also have online benefit planners to help you estimate your future retirement, disability, and survivors benefits. You can open a free personal online my Social Security account, where you can keep track of your annual earnings and verify them. Why is that important? Because your future benefits are based on your

annual earnings. With your account, you can also get an estimate of your future benefits if you are still working; or, if you currently receive benefits, you can use your account to manage your benefits, and get an instant letter with proof of your benefits. You can also request a Medicare card replacement. “The force is calling to you. Just let it in.” This

winter, check out our online services and join the millions of other Americans who have already awakened their own personal my Social Security accounts. A my Social Security account is a force to be reckoned with. And you don’t need to be a Jedi to have one. Learn more at www. socialsecurity.gov. Once you go online, this force will be with you … always.

The Baptist's Secrets to Joy

26) Where did John get his name "the Baptist"? John As we listen to John the the Baptist was prophesied Baptist, we can discover his to be the forerunner of secrets to joy. (John 3:22- Christ, who called people to repent and be baptized to prepare the way of the Lord. (Matthew 3:1-6) When John the Baptist's ministry came to a close, he concluded it with these words, "Therefore, this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase but I must decrease." (John 3:30) Would you like to experience a lasting joy? Apply John the Baptist's secrets to joy. First — REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED. John made it clear that water baptism without repenting of sin was powerless to change one's life. "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! . . . And were baptized by him in the Jordan, Find the confessing their sins." (John 2:2, 6) Water baptism is a Shopper’s picture of one's death to self Weekly and sin; an identification with the death, burial, and online & resurrection of Jesus Christ; on social and a public confession of Jesus Christ as one's Savior media like and Lord. Have you obFacebook served the joyful faces of those who have truly re& Twitter. pented of their sins and come up out of the baptismal waters? The angels in heaven! (Luke 15:10) David declared, "Blessed is he whose transgression is for-

given, whose sin is covered." (Psalm 32:1-2) Second — REALIZE THAT ANYTHING OF LASTING VALUE CAN ONLY COME FROM HEAVEN. The disciples of John told him that multitudes were following Jesus and being baptized beyond the Jordan River. (John 3:27-28) They were jealous for John's ministry. But John was joyful! His mission was coming to a close. If something you cherish comes to a close, trust God that He has something else for you. When God closes one door, He opens another. Realize that it's not about you, it's all about Jesus! Have John's attitude, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven . . . I am not the Christ." Third — REJOICE TO HEAR THE BRIDEGROOM'S VOICE. (John 3:29-30, 32) A wedding is not about the best man or maid of honor, or how beautiful the wedding party looks. No, it's about the vows or testimony of the groom's and the bride's love and commitment to each other. To have continuing joy in your heart hear each day the bridegroom's voice — Jesus Christ. "His sheep hear his voice." (John 10:27-28) He speaks constantly through his Word. Just days before her death, the late poet, Maya Angelou said, "Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God." Do you rejoice to hear the heavenly bridegroom's voice?

Fourth — REDUCE ME TO LOVE. John the Baptist shared one of the greatest secrets to abounding joy when he said, "Therefore my joy is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all." (John 3:30) Our greatest enemy to joy is self. Years ago, as a youth pastor, we sang a popular song that had the refrain, "reduce me to love." John gave us the key to incredible, abounding joy, Jesus must increase, but I must decrease. Let us make that our prayer and goal. Fifth — RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. Speaking of Jesus, John said, that to Jesus, God gave the Spirit without measure. (John 3:34) John the Baptist was filled with Spirit while in his mother's womb. On the day of Pentecost Peter gave us this wonderful promise, "Repent and let everyone of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38-39) The Holy Spirit is the source of abiding joy. ( Eph e s i ans 5 : 1 7 - 2 0 ) Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and abound in joy. John the Baptist's secrets to joy are the way to everlasting life. "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:36) Believe! Guinea Pig’s Death Sparks Questions DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: Tonight our dear guinea pig “Sparks” had a heart attack and left us within a couple of hours. There was no chance to take her to an emergency vet. Is tension in the house a cause of heart attack in guinea pigs? Is there anything we could have done to prevent this? — Yamile, via email DEAR YAMILE: I’m sorry to hear of Sparks’ death. I’ll try to offer some explanation why, and I encourage my readers to send their advice as well. Heart attack (and stroke) are, sadly, very common caus es of

sudden death in guinea pigs, a.k.a. cavies. Cavies are very sensitive to their environment, particularly changes in temperature. Being unable to rest peacefully also causes stress that affects their system. In short, cavies love a comfor table routine and a rest area sheltered from light and noise. Deficiencies in diet also can be a factor. This can get tricky, so speaking with other cavy owners or vets who specialize in them can help deduce whether a cavy needs a specific type of feed or supplement (too much can be as bad as too little). Because it’s often hard to detect illness in cavies until they suddenly decline, you should learn a bit of “cavy first aid.” One important step when a cavy takes ill is to contact the vet by phone first and describe the symptoms. Sometimes a cavy is too ill to safely be
