BLOOD DONATIONS URGENTLY NEEDED BY THE AMERICAN RED CROSS The American Red Cross urgently needs blood donors to make an appointment to give this winter. Eligible blood donors of all types are needed, especially those with O, AB, B negative and A negative. Blood is needed to respond to emergencies large and small, across the country every day. For Heather Von Glahn, it was a personal emergency — her 8-year-old daughter’s leukemia diagnosis — that inspired her to make the commitment to give blood regularly. “I’ve seen blood save her life at least 10 times,” said Von Glahn. “When friends and family ask what they can do for my daughter, I tell them to donate blood. It matters so much!” Blood donations are urgently needed now and throughout the winter to maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients in need. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Franklin County: Feb. 9, 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Thompsonville High School, 21135 S h aw n e e t ow n R o a d , Thompsonville. Feb. 10, 12:30 p.m. - 5 p.m., Franklin Hospital, 201 Bailey Lane, Benton. Jefferson County: Feb. 4, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Crossroads Community Hospital, 8 Doctors Park Road, Mt. Vernon. To donate blood simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors can now

Now it's the Democrats' turn to fret as Bernie Sanders surges. The Democrats want to know what's wrong with their girl, Hillary Clinton. That's easy, she's not trustworthy! She's corrupt and wouldn't know the truth if it bit her. It's a traditional split. It's not like they haven't seen this before. Remember Obama – Clinton. Hillary's run is a 2008 replay. She's the only candidate under investigation by the FBI, and is justifiably so. The FBI has plenty to look at. Recently new emails have surfaced, above top secret (1,300 to 1,400 of them). This is nothing short of treason! Things are going so badly for her that former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is now considering a run for the White House. With the announcement of Bloomberg's possible run, Hillary's reaction was, "He's a good friend of mine."

On to Bernie. At this point the polls are showing that he has a better chance of beating Trump than Hillary does, even though not one from the Democratic establishment has endorsed Bernie. The fact that Bernie is calling for political revolution has something to do with that. Not to mention he is a socialist, and the young adults' favorite pick. In theory some of his ideas sound good, but re-

alistically wages of $15 per hour will cost jobs. Free college for all? Someone is going to pay for that. Medicare for all? If you think the health care system is broken now — and it is — just wait! There's no quick fix. But there are better ways to fix broken systems instead of pouring more money into them, e.g. the educational system. Take a look at what administrators and many college professors are being paid in salary and retirement. Cut those and give a break to students. Hold educators accountable for poor test scores. Need I say more! Oh well! On to Trump and Cruz. Trump remains on top in spite of what the National Review says. By the way, Trump's wrong. The National Review is a well respected conservative magazine and far from dying! The Republican Party is every bit as fractured as the Democratic Party. And the Republican candidates have been nastier by far than the Democrats for now, but it's picking up between Clinton and Sanders. I believe the Republican establishment's goal is to beat Cruz, who, according to many, is a nasty guy and not the Party's pick. Trump will take a number of states, and then in comes a new candidate, inserted by none other than the establishment. Really! It's too late to run against Trump.

The big question should be: Who can run the country? Putting party aside, it's apparent Barack Obama — who Clinton is hugging — couldn't do the job. On to Iowa. We are just a week away from the Iowa Caucuses. Today Trump has an 11-point lead over Cruz. However, Iowa's biggest newspaper, The Des Moines Resister, just endorsed Marco Rubio. I find that interesting since more money has been spent attacking Rubio than any other candidate. Keep in mind many Iowans make up their minds the day of the Caucus. This will be the first big test for Donald Trump. But my prediction is Trump / Sanders in Iowa. And maybe that's wishful thinking on my part. In closing, let me again encourage one and all to see the movie, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. I'm sure Hillary Clinton won't; after all, she slept through it the first time! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. MCCARTER SUPPORTS PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS S t a t e S e n . Ky l e McCarter is sticking up for private property rights of Illinois citizens by urging state and federal courts to reject any request for eminent domain authority from the corporation behind the Grain Belt Express project. McCarter filed Senate Resolution 1392 with the Illinois Senate Jan. 13. The 54th District senator also expressed concerns about the partial ‘green light’ given to the project by the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). “There are two big i s s u e s h e r e ,” s a i d McCarter. “The first is that eminent domain actions, which result in the taking of private property, are supposed to be reserved for projects with a public interest or a public good. The second issue is the involvement of the ICC regulating the transmission line project.” The cor p oration behind the Grain Belt Express, Clean Line Energy Partners, is a group of investors that want to build transmission lines across privatelyowned land in Illinois to carry wind-generated electrical power from western states. “The ICC should reconsider their decision giving the project a designation as a ‘public convenience and necessity,’” said McCarter. “That puts eminent domain in the bag of possible legal tricks, even though the transmission lines provide no benefit to Illinois or its citizens. Eminent domain is supposedly reserved for what’s in the best interest of the public good,” said McCarter.

Un d e r e m i n e n t domain, private property owners are supposed to receive fair compensation for property that is taken, but Sen. McCarter said he is concerned that landowners may get less-thanideal offers because of legal pressure. Last year, McCarter supported legislation that helps protect landowners in the path of a transmission line. Senate Bill 1726, which took effect last summer, requires the ICC to notify the landowners in the path of a proposed transmission line by registered mail. “This law makes sure the correct landowners are notified ahead of time so that they can seek appropriate legal counsel,” said McCarter. “It also requires the transmission line company to notify the landowner when a land survey is conducted on a person’s property after the ICC certificate is issued. However, while this protection is in place — as far as notification is concerned — the use of eminent domain is a big disadvantage to landowners.” McCarter said when it comes to providing electrical power, he’d like to see more attention paid to real energy generation in Illinois. “If the ICC is going to take actions to benefit energy generation, it should be about promoting and expanding the use of Illinois coal,” said McCarter. “To make it easy for wind power to blow through this state and not benefit the state of Illinois, this project should be low on our priority list,” said McCarter.

Good Old Days Soup Recipes In days gone by soups and stews helped southern cooks stretch their budgets. You could feed a lot for a little. Cooks would take leftover roast beef, turkey, sausage or chicken and simmer it into a flavorful broth that could be filled with vegetables, rice or pasta. In the winter, a big pot of soup might be on the stove early in the morning and left to simmer all day. At night the soup would warm and nourish family members, and be served with fresh baked bread and butter. Today it's a different lifestyle, but you can bring your family back to those good old days with the recipes below.

Vegetable, Bean and Sausage Soup

1 lb. bulk pork sausage 1 large onion, chopped 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/2 cup chopped celery 2 (16 oz.) cans kidney beans, drained 1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes, undrained and chopped

a r b ting e l e C

1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. garlic powder 1/4 tsp. dried thyme leaves 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 cup peeled and diced red potato 1 large carrot, scraped and thinly sliced

Brown sausage in large Dutch oven over high heat, stirring to crumble. Drain, reserving 1 T. pan drippings; set sausage aside. Add onion, green pepper and celery to drippings; saute until tender. Add kidney beans, tomatoes, 1 quart water, tomato sauce, salt, garlic powder, thyme and black pepper, stirring well. Bring to boil over high heat; cover, reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes. Add potato, carrot and cooked sausage; cover and simmer 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.

Remove and discard bay leaves. Add potatoes, carrots, quartered onion, turnips and celery; cover and cook over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Embracing Change The great comedian Will Rogers said, “Two things are certain in life: taxes and death. I would add a third: change is inevitable. An inmate at the county jail recently asked me, “Where in the Bible does it say, ‘There is a time for everything?’ The wise King Solomon said, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance . . . A time to keep silence, and a time to speak . . . A time of war, and a time of peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) Many people resist change. We like our comfort zones. When change comes we can become depressed, angry, and resentful, or embrace change with a positive attitude. Consider these pointers to help you embrace c h ange an d g row through the process.

1. Is the Book of 2 Corinthians in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Revelation 17:6, who is drunk with the blood of the saints and martyrs of Jesus? The woman, Servant, The lost, Laborer 3. Mahershalalhashbaz

K N O W T HAT CHANGE IS INEVITA B L E . C h a n g e happens whether we like it or not. Solomon tells us that there is a season for everything. “There is a time to mourn and a time to dance. It’s okay to grieve loss, but there is a time to move on. We can choose to curse the darkness or embrace the light. I came across this Facebook post from Jesus Daily, “You may have had bad things happen in your life that were not fair, it may have made you bitter. Do not dwell on the negative . . . we were not promised a fair life here. Only one thing can stop you from reaching what God wants for you in this life . . . and that is you. KNOW THAT YOU CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST. The apostle Paul revealed the key to embracing change, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens

me.â€? (Philippians 3:13) When Paul prayed for God to deliver him from his “thorn in the flesh,â€? God’s answer was, “My grace is sufficient for you.â€? (II Corinthians 12:9) Seek God’s grace. KNOW THAT GOD HAS A PURPOSE AND PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE. It’s the seasons of life that make the mighty oak tree strong. In the midst of change trust that God is working His purpose out for your life. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according t o H i s p u r p o s e .â€? (Romans 8:28) Trust God. (Psalm 118:8) Thank Him for the good plans He has for your life. (I Thessalonians 5:18; Jeremiah 29:11) K N O W T HAT CHANGE OPENS UP NEW OPPORTUNITIES AND POSSIBILITIES. The apostle Paul saw his chains and imprisonment as an opportunity to proclaim the gospel of Christ. (Philippians 1:12-13) When a new highway by-passed his cafĂŠ, Harlan Sanders, at the age of 65, put his pressure cooker in the back

of his car and began selling his method of cooking chicken. Colonel Sanders’ Kentucky Fried Chicken f ranchise became one of the most successful businesses throughout the world. KNOW THAT GOD IS THE ULTIMATE CHANGE AGENT. No matter what age you are and despite your circumstances, you can experience the greatest change of all. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. (II Corinthians 5:17) Jesus referred to it as being “born again. (John 3:3) By repentance of sin and faith in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, the wind of the Holy Spirit makes one a new person in Christ. As a child of God you have the promise to inherit a new heaven an d a n e w e ar t h s o m e d a y. E x p e c t changes and the blessings of God in your life as you embrace the wind and work of the Holy Spirit. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Single Lambs looking for romance could find Cupid especially accommodating this week. Paired partners also find their relationships benefiting from the chubby cherub’s attention. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Keep your keen Bull’s eye focused on your target, and shake off any attempt to turn your attention elsewhere. You should get some news later in the week that might answer some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your early enthusiasm for a project might have been somewhat premature. Although you feel positive about it, you might need more information in order to make an informed decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking on a new responsibility might seem like the politically correct thing to do. But even with the promise of support, was it the wisest? Consider reassessing your upcoming decision. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Apply yourself to completing your task despite all the distractions that might be interfering with your work. Then reward yourself with a weekend of fun shared with people who are close to you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A business agreement from the past might need to be looked at again. Use this unexpected development to check out other matters related to it. A weekend venture proves to be rewarding. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ignore that uneasy feeling

about making a commitment. It could be a case of understandably cold feet, or a warning that something isn’t as right as it should be. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A colleague could be more supporting of one of your efforts. But it’s up to you to make the case for it, and that could mean opening up a secret or two, which might be a problem for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect some good news about a relative you’ve been worried about. But don’t expect the full story to be told -- at least not yet. A workplace matter might face shifting priorities. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Despite some anxious moments, you could have good reason to be pleased with how things are turning out. An end-of-theweek call might hold some interesting information. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A long-overdue expression of appreciation could be offered soon. But admit it: You never really expected it would happen, right? Meanwhile, keep your weekend options open. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to dive right into a new challenge, whether it’s learning a computer app, or how to drive a stick shift, or making a new friend. Whatever it is, good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You see the wisdom in honesty, and you help others appreciate your vision. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

needles. If you're afraid of going insane, you're lyssophobic; if it's disease that frightens you, you're nosophobic; cremnophobia is a fear ofs precipices. There's even a word to describe the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth: arachibutyrophobia. And finally, you may at this point be suffering from sesquipedalophobia — the fear of long words. • Located in the Sierras at 8,000 feet above sea level, the town of Bodie was once the second-biggest city in California. These days, it's deserted for most of the year, but every summer more than 200,000 people travel to the upper altitudes just to see the slowly decaying town, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the ghosts that reputedly inhabit every crumbling building that remains. *** Thought for the Day: "We're in the same tent as the clowns and the freaks — that's show business."— Edward R.
