Students from FFA chapters across Illinois attended the 212° Leadership Conference. This conference is an activity of the National FFA Organization made possible by title sponsor Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. 212° — the temperature at which water boils — focuses on taking students to the boiling point of personal leadership. At 211° water is extremely hot, but just one more degree gets us to the next level. The two-day 212° Leadership Conference is focused on student development and helps FFA memb ers become aware of all aspects of personal growth. FFA members attended sessions on mental, emotion, physical and social growth. Students leave this experience with a personal plan for self-improvement. This school year, more than 7,500 students across the nation will participate in a 212° or 360° Leadership Conference. The National FFA

The Washington County Farm Bureau will be working with Kroger’s in Nashville on February 18 to celebrate the American farmer’s role in producing the safest, most abundant food supply in the world. February 14-20 is “Food Check-Out Week”, and the Marketing Committee of the Farm Bureau will be offering consumers with a break on their grocery bill on the 18th. “Food Check-

Out Week” is the time of year when you have earned enough disposable income to purchase all of your food needs for the coming year. To celebrate, the Farm Bureau is offering $5.00 off of every purchase of $50 or more from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on February 18 at Kroger’s in Nashville. According to the latest statistics compiled by the USDA’s Economic Research Service, American families

and individuals currently spend, on average, around 10 percent of their disposable personal income for food. The $5.00 off of your $50 purchase represents that 10 percent. Students are tested as teams and individually in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics. Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula and written by college and university faculty. Exams of increasing levels of difficulty are given at the regional, sectional and state

finals. This is the ninth year CORLHS has participated in the WYSE challenge, and the sixth time they have advanced to sectional competition at McKendree. D i r e c t o r Way n e A . Rosenthal announced recently that an agreement has been reached to reopen the Illinois State Museum to the public. IDNR has worked closely with Governor Bruce Rauner’s office to develop a new, more sustainable model for operating the museum that will save about $1 million per year by closing two museum branches, consolidating human resources and accounting functions within IDNR, and by development of a new management and organizational structure. The museum will also seek to improve revenue by charging an admission fee, and increase fundraising efforts through an improved partnership with the Illinois State Museum Society. The timeframe for reopening will depend upon the Illinois G eneral Assembly taking up the amendatory veto (AV) of SB 317 and implementing the suggested changes. Governor Bruce Rauner’s AV asks that the authority to charge an admission fee be placed in statute so it can

of the amendatory veto. “If the General Assembly acts quick ly on the Governor’s amendatory veto, we believe we could reopen the museum in a matter of weeks,” said IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal. “Without the General Assembly’s support, it could take months to get the museum reopened.” Michael Wiant will become interim director of the Illinois State Museum immediately. Rosenthal will ask the Illinois State Museum Board to begin the search for a new director. Rosenthal also will ask the Museum and Society boards to call emergency meetings so work to reopen the museum can begin immediately. “With challenge comes great opportunity, and the museum staff is grateful for this tremendous opportunity to continue to share the art, history and culture of Illinois with its citizens,” said Dr. Michael Wiant, Interim Director of the Illinois State Museum. “I applaud the Governor's action as it creates a realistic path forward to reopen-

ing the Illinois State Museum,” said State Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield). “Reopening the museum is vital to our community and the plan announced today will provide for the longterm viability and growth of the museum system. I look forward to working with the community, legislators, and the Governor as we again open the doors on a wonderful asset of our State.” “I am encouraged that the Governor took careful steps in adjusting this legislation while maintaining the ultimate goal of allowing our State Museum to resume its important work. We all want to see those doors open to the public once again, and this compromise could make that happen,” said State Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez (R-Springfield). “The Illinois State Museum Society is looking forward to the challenge of becoming a stronger partner and playing a greater role in the success of the Illinois State Museum,” said Karen Westbrook of the Illinois State Museum Society.

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

A Marriage Made in Heaven A young bride described her marriage as “a marriage made in heaven.” Is there such a thing as a marriage made in heaven? What would a marriage made in heaven look like? If you think a marriage made in heaven is a perfect marriage, then you would be greatly disappointed. No husband or wife is perfect, for we are all human and carry our own frailties and foibles. On the website davewillis.org this sage observation is found, “Great marriages don’t happen by luck or by accident. They are the result of a consistent invest ment of t ime, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, affection, prayer, mutual respect, and rocksolid commitment between a husband and wife.” In Ephesians 5, God’s Word describes how to have a marriage made in heaven. Read and practice

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

these five areas: 1) Walk in love (Ephesians 5:1-7); 2) Walk in light (Ephesians 5:8-14); 3) Walk in wisdom (Ephesians 5:15-17); 4) Walk in the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18-20); 5) Walk in Christ (Ephesians 5:21-33). Put into practice the following building blocks for a marriage made in heaven by following the example of Christ, the heavenly bridegroom, and His love for the church, the bride of Christ. (Ephesians 5:22-33) SERVANT LEADERSHIP. A marriage made in heaven acknowledges Christ as head of the church. Paul calls Christ’s love for the church a great mystery. (Ephesians 5:32) Jesus modeled servant leadership as He gave His life as a sacrifice. The scriptures admonish husbands to take the lead in marriage. “Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let wives be subject to their own husbands.” (Ephesians 5:22-24) This

does not make the wife a doormat, but a helpmate, a partner. Husbands lead as t he y fol low C hr ist’s example. SACRIFICIAL LOVE. “Husbands, love your wives as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her.” (Ephesians 5:25-29) Husbands are admonished to nourish and cherish their wife as they would their own body. We do this by words and actions. The scriptures remind us that husbands and wives become one flesh and walk in the intimacy and oneness that Christ modeled for the church. (Ephesians 5:3032) Recently, I came across this powerful Facebook post, “In the blink of an eye, everything can change. So forgive often and love with all your heart. You may never know when you may not have that chance again.” A great philosophy for a good marriage is, “Always building up, never tearing down.” STRONG COMMITMENT. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.” (Ephesians 5:30-32) God takes the marriage vows very seriously. A marriage made in heaven has a strong and solid commitment for life.

(Ephesians 5:1-7) Traditional marriage vows have included this statement for a reason, “Whom, therefore, God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” SINCERE RESPECT. Interestingly, husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loves the church and wives are commanded to respect their husbands. “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself and the wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33) A wife needs to know she is loved and a husband needs to know that he is respected. A marriage made in heaven is built upon making Christ Lord and making a consistent investment of time, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, affection, prayer, mutual respect, and a rock-solid commitment. All Christians need to spend time daily letting the Word of Christ dwell in them richly, for then the Spirit of God can work in our lives to make us joyful, thankful, and submissive. (Colossians 3:16-4:1)

Recently a friend of mind (knowing my deep love of southern cooking) lent me a cookbook to thumb through called Paula Deen's Southern Cookbook Bible, a classic guide to delicious dishes with more than 300 recipes. Just know I'm gonna love anything that starts out by saying, "Y'all, I love my carbs." But the fact is, no southern table is complete without a bowl of carbohydrate goodness. I don't care where you are in the south, you'll always find pasta, noodles or rice on the table, and today it's not much different. So, speaking of carbohydrates, in famous Paula Deen fashion I'll say, "Hope y'all enjoy the dishes below."

The Lady's Cheesy Mac 2 cups (8 oz.) elbow macaroni 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, plus extra for topping 4 T. (1/2 stick) butter, cut into pieces

3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup whole milk or evaporated milk 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 tsp. salt

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with butter, oil, or cooking spray. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the macaroni according to the package directions. Drain well and transfer to a large bowl. Add the 2 cups cheddar and the butter, stirring until the pasta is coated. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sour cream, and salt. Add the egg mixture to the pasta and stir well to combine. Scrape the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Bake until golden, 35 to 40 minutes. Take the dish out of the oven and top with extra cheese, then return it to the oven until the cheese is melted and beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Serve hot. Serves 4 to 6.

Savannah Red Rice 3 T. butter 1 cup chopped yellow onion 1 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup chopped andouille or other smoked sausage 1 cup long-grain white rice

1 (15 oz.) can crushed tomatoes 1 cup chicken broth 1 tsp. hot sauce Pinch of salt Pinch of black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with butter, oil, or cooking spray. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and sausage and cook until the vegetables soften, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. Cook until the sauce begins to thicken, about 10 minutes. Scrape the mixture into the prepared baking dish and cover with foil. Bake until the rice is tender and the sauce is bubbling, 40 to 45 minutes. Serve hot. Serves 4 to 6.

Southern Brown Rice With Mushrooms 3 T. butter 1¾ cups beef broth 3/4 cup chopped yellow onion 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup long-grain white rice Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish 1 (4 oz.) can sliced mushrooms, drained In a medium saucepan, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft and golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Add the rice and mushrooms and cook, stirring to coat with the butter, for about 2 minutes. Pour in the broth and add the salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook until most of the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender, 17 to 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Serve garnished with parsley. Serves 4. ***

In 2016 the Democrats will hold their caucuses on Feb. 20 and the GOP will be on Feb. 23 (separate caucuses). During the GOP debate, the gloves came off and it quickly became a verbal slugfest. It was all out war, especially between Jeb and Donald Trump. In my opinion, there was no clear winner. The weekend ended in the sad news that the longest serving Supreme Court Justice died. Justice Antonin Scalia (1936 – 2016) died at age 79, the father of 9 and grandfather of 35. He was a man that deeply believed in the U.S. Constitution, and was a great defender of the Constitution, unlike Obama who violates it at every opportunity. So what's next? Mitch McConnell has already declared the line is drawn and Barack Obama won't name the next justice, so there's no point in him trying! And I absolutely agree with this. Obama should not name the replacement for Scalia. That should be up to the next President — Republican or Democrat. A lame duck POTUS should not be allowed to tip the balance of the Supreme Court for years to come. But leave it to Obama to try. In closing, I didn't always agree with Justice Scalia, but I always respected him! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. However, most wet cat food contains chicken or beef “byproducts,” which usually means some amount of liver. If my cats smell liver in their food, they just won’t eat it, and will go hungry and meow about it — usually in the middle of the night. By trial and error, I have found about five or six different cans they really like to eat. However, some days they gobble the

food down and other days they go on a hunger strike, even with foods they liked the last time. When that happens, I pick up the bowl and smell it. Every single time it smells like liver, and I have to throw it out. They also like variety in their wet food, although I never have had to switch their dry food. I wish cat food manufacturers would not add any liver at all, but almost all cat food has byproducts in it. I hope my experience helps your other readers. — Kathy in Sacramento DEAR KATHY: Many thanks for sharing this! I too have dealt with this issue. The struggle then becomes finding another flavor or brand of food that the cat will tolerate. Often that boils down to buying a much more expensive brand that doesn’t contain byproducts. But that can be difficult for many cat owners. Readers, what

by Samantha Weaver • It was American journalist and poet Max Eastman who made the following sage observation: "People who demand neutrality in any situation are usually not neutral but in favor of the status quo." • When you were in school, you may have had to memorize the names of all 50 states. You probably weren't taught, though, that fully half of those names are derived from the languages of the con-

tinent's native peoples. • The declarations that the physical book is dead have been overstated (as I've always maintained). In a recent survey of college students, 72 percent of respondents made known their preference for print textbooks over ebooks; only 27 percent of this youthful, tech-savvy demographic said they preferred the electronic version. • Those who study such

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) St. Valentine’s Day magic rules the entire week for romantic Rams and Ewes. Music, which is the food of love, is also strong. The weekend offers news both unexpected and anticipated. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your aspects favor the arts -- which the Divine Bovine loves, loves, loves. Also, for those looking for romantic love, Cupid is available for requests. After all, his mother, Venus, rules your sign. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Loving commitments continue to grow stronger. Ditto budding relationships. A recent move to help start up a new career-linked direction soon could begin to show signs of progress. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Single Moon Children might be eager to take that proverbial chance on love. But your more serious side will feel better if you take things slowly and give your moonstruck self more time. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a love fest for Leos and Leonas this week. Paired Cats might expect to be purr-fectly in sync. And with matchmaking friends, single Simbas searching for romance shouldn’t have too far to look. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) More understanding on both sides can work miracles in restoring ailing relationships to health. Make the first move, and you’ll be closer to your much-wanted reunion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Accept the fact that you are

He even carried a compass with him everywhere to ensure proper positioning. • If you're a fan of James Bond, you may be surprised to learn that Ian Fleming, the creator of that notorious character, also wrote the beloved children's book "ChittyChitty-Bang-Bang," based on bedtime stories the author made up for his young son. • If you're traveling in China and propose a toast in someone's honor, be sure you're holding the

worthy of being loved, and you’ll find proof in what is revealed to you over the course of the week. Also accept a compliment offered with great sincerity. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Planning to take a new direction in life is exciting. And so is a new awareness of someone’s special affection. Expect a slow and mostly steady development of the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although you might still feel you weren’t treated quite right in a recent matter, all that will work out in time. Meanwhile, enjoy the week’s special qualities and potentials. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Deciding not to give up on a troubling romantic situation helps start the healing process. Expect to find some valuable insight into yourself as things move along. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The week is filled with positive potentials, but it’s up to you to make the right choices. The advice of someone who truly cares for you and your well-being can be priceless. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to make yourself available to possibilities of the romantic kind.
