LEGISLATORS TOUR MURRAY DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER Illinois legislators and candidates gathered at Murray Center in Centralia, IL on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 to tour and learn about the facility. Legislative visitors included: Mike Hall, representing C ongressman Shimkus's office, Rep. Terri Bryant, Mark Decker representing Rep. John Caveletto's office, Sheila Simon candidate 58th Senate District, Paul Schimpf candidate 58th Senate District, Sharee Langenstein candidate 58th Senate District, and Rep. Charlie Meier. Also, J. B. Meier, the DHS Liaison participated in the event. The tour began at 1 p.m., and the above people plus over 20 parents/guardians toured the Community Building, visiting classrooms and the Bistro. The Bistro is a small restaurant at the center where staff and individuals are able to purchase small meals and snacks. Several individuals who live at Murray Center

are the waiters and waitresses at the Bistro. After visiting this building the group toured Fir Cottage, and Center Director Mary Ann Smith explained the many different services the center provides: occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy are just some of the services. The group then toured Elm Cottage, a cottage where the most medically fragile individuals live. The cottage director, Misty Diehl, explained the many medical issues the individuals deal with and how the nursing staff serves these individuals. Phil, a Murray individual, welcomed the group using a speech communication device that he uses by pressing it with his cheek. During the visit to Elm, parents/guardians shared stories of the success their loved one had living at Murray Center, and Monica Sobczak explained that her sister Madonna, age 58, is the second longest living individual with Rett's Disease. She credited the fantastic nursing care Madonna has received at Murray for this longevity. The group continued the tour, seeing the therapeutic swimming pool and the outdoor recreational areas. The group then met and they were able to discuss the reasons why Murray Center is so important not just to Centralia, but to all of central and southern Illinois. Following are some quotes from participating individuals: Paul Schimpf: No one can see from pictures how wonderful this place is. It is

the love that is overflowing here that makes all the difference. It is just like two plants. The plant that is nourished with love and care will flourish and grow. The plant that does not receive this care will wither and die. Murray is the plant that is nourished and loved. Sharee Langenstein: I came to Murray knowing in my head that Murray must remain open. After visiting here and seeing the love and care the individuals receive here in their home I now know it in my heart. Murray must remain open. Sheila Simon: It is so very obvious that this is a community. There is no isolation here. It is a community of everyone sharing and caring.

Mark Decker representing John Cavaletto: Rep. Cavaletto has supported Murray Center for over forty years. He regrets not being here today to share this special place with everyone. Mike Hall representing John Shimkus: John's parents are from Centralia. Murray Center has been part of his life for over 40 years, and he has always supported the center and fought to keep the center open. Murray is a home to these individuals. Rep Meier: It is amazing as I walk through Murray Center now to see the old, wonderful atmosphere returning, the volunteers, the parents / guardians, and the caring staff providing the best home for these individuals. This is not an institution. It is a home.

Republic Services will start the leaf vacuuming service for City residents of Centralia as of Monday, April 4. The vacuuming service will last for a period of 4 weeks ending on Friday, April 29. The service will follow routes as established in August 2012 (for a detailed map see website at www.cityofcentralia.org under: Departments, City Clerk, Utilities). The usual landscape waste and limbs will continue to be collected every week in approved paper bags. The following are simple

rules that the City asks each resident to follow to make the process as smooth as possible: 1. Please rake your leaves to within four (4) feet of the curb but DO NOT place leaves on the street or in the gutter as they will clog the storm drains. This is typically the area between the sidewalk and the curb. 2. Please DO NOT place leaves behind or near obstacles such as mailboxes, trees, hedges, fences, etc. If there are any obstacles preventing your leaves from being picked up,

they WILL NOT be picked up. 3. Please avoid parking vehicles in front of piles of leaves on the day that they are to be collected. The vacuum trucks require a MINIMUM of forty five (45) feet of curb access to safely operate. If a vehicle blocks access to the leaves, they WILL NOT be picked up. 4. Please DO NOT mix trash, yard waste such as limbs, weeds, grass or any other material with the leaves. Yard waste mixed with leaves causes safety concerns and equipment malfunction. These items should be placed in approved paper bags for weekly collection or bundled properly.

Centralia Manor Bounce Back, Rehab, Recover Program “Returned Me Home!”

Congratulations to the Andersons for completion of the Bounce Back Program! This loving, sweet couple will soon be returning home together. Harriet and Donald Anderson from Centralia have been married for 68 years and have 3 children. They both agree and thanked The Bounce Back Program and the nursing care for their rehab to home.

Last week was definitely a huge one in the world of presidential contenders. • Bernie support surprises • Super delegates • Trump dominates media • All about protests • North Carolina, etc. • Rubio done? • Cruz hangs in • Kasich rising • Washington out • Who's dressing Hillary? First up, B er nie. Shockingly, Sanders won the Michigan primary last Tuesday night, after the polls showed him recently at 20 points down, but climbing. This could be "the shot heard round the world" for the Hillary camp. How will Bernie do now in other midwestern states like Illinois, Ohio and more on this Tuesday? (Our press time was Monday.) Hillary isn't worried about Bernie catching her because she's got the super delegates locked up (currently 465 to Bernie's 25). If the super delegates (the Democrat Party's concept to make sure no "candidate of the people" could win over the party's chosen candidate) were not in play, the race would now be 766 Hillary delegates to Bernie's 561. What a difference the super delegate makes! I wonder is this really the American way? More on Hillary later. But who dominated the media news all last week? Of course the answer is: Trump, Trump, Trump. First, last Tuesday, except for Idaho he won all the state primaries and as he would say "By a lot." Also, Ben Carson came out in support of Trump, and then starting in North Carolina the protesters at Trump rallies escalated. What has always struck me as odd is that protesters think it's their right to disrupt

a political rally. Let me give you an example to relate to. If the Centralia Orphans were having a pep rally to support their team, do you think the Mt. Vernon Rams would think it was okay to enter the rally and protest the Orphans? I'm sure both sides wouldn't think it appropriate, no matter whether it was an Orphans rally or a Rams rally. And, of course, doing so would only lead to problems. Back to the North Carolina rally. As protesters were being lead out of the area, and which the media fails to repeatedly mention, one protester raised both arms and gave the booing crowd "the dreaded finger." You know the gesture that usually leads to violence, and it did. He was sucker punched by a 78 year old man, who obviously didn't appreciate "the finger." I don't condone that action, but it does better explain what happened. Then the protests grew at the St. Louis rally and then in Chicago the rally was shut down because of safety reasons according to Trump. Trump, with his rhetoric at previous rallies, has also escalated the violence and needs to tone down this rhetoric for the safety of all at future rallies. On to other Republican candidates. Marco Rubio continues his scripted attacks on Trump, but by all indications will probably lose his home state of Florida and will withdraw from the race after Tuesday. Ted Cruz continues his attorney-like attack on Trump, trying to discredit him for asking his supporters to pledge their votes to Trump. Cruz attempts to make it seem the voters are "pledging allegiance to Trump" the monarch.

In actuality, Cruz, as always, wants to make sure he is the alternate to Trump and will pick up supporters when "Trump fails." Me anw hile, Ohio Governor John Kasich has risen in the polls and has continued to take the high road in this election. Polls now show he will probably win his home state of Ohio, but after that, then what? Trump and Cruz will take most future states. In this election, we must remember that the majority of our citizens are fed up with the last 30 years of Washington politics. That is why Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders and somewhat John Kasich are on the wave they are. They do not represent what the majority of Washington has been doing TO US. Marco Rubio, Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush (by his name) and other candidates who have dropped out do. On a final lighter note, Hillary appeared on CNN Sunday night Town Hall. Her wardrobe choice throughout the race has been mentioned, but at the town hall she appeared in a distracting blue pant suit with GIGANTIC POCKETS with white piping. I had to laugh out loud because I couldn't' figure out if it signified her "deep pockets in this election" or if she was trying to get the Captain Kangaroo vote. The Anointing At Bethany It’s been said that love isn’t love until it’s given away. True love must find an expression. Mary, the sister of Lazarus, who Jesus had raised from the dead, loved Jesus with all her heart. Mary expressed her love with a remarkable, selfless, extravagant act. The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John record this event, with John telling us that it was Mary. “And being in Bethany at the house of Simon, the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came bearing an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for

more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.’ And they criticized her sharply. But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me . . . She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached . . . what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” (Mark 14:3-11) Jesus was greatly touched by Mary’s extravagant act. What lessons can we learn? AN EXTRAVAGANT LOVE. The fragrant oil that Mary poured out on Jesus was very costly. Those present assessed its value at over three hundred denarii – equivalent to a year’s salary today! He who is forgiven much loves much. To Mary it was an act of worship. The essence of worshiping Christ is to regard him with utmost love, respect, and devotion and to be willing to sacri-

“She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial.” This anointing of Jesus’ body happened just a couple of days before Passover when the paschal lamb would be slain and the blood sprinkled on the mercy seat. Jesus came to die on the cross for the sins of the world. (Romans 5:8) In the Last Supper, Jesus demonstrated the gospel at the Passover meal: the bread - His body; the cup – His blood. (Mark 14:2226) Paul makes it clear that Jesus died, was buried, and on the third day arose. (I Corinthians 15:1-8) This is the essential essence of the gospel – you must believe. (I Corinthians 15:9-11) AN EMBLEM FOR ETERNITY. Jesus proclaimed that wherever the gospel was preached, Mary’s selfless act would be told as a memorial to her. She left a lasting legacy by her extravagant worship and witness. Men like Jacob and Cornelius left a lasting memorial. (Genesis 18:1022; Acts 10:4) Follow Mary’s example of extravagant worship and leave a lasting legacy that pleases God. Worship the Savior who died for our sins.

fice to him what is most precious. This type of extravagant worship will always have its critics. This woman was criticized sharply. But costly worship pleases God. Abraham willingly laid his son Isaac on the altar of sacrifice. (Genesis 22) We must do no less. (Romans 12:1-2) AN ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLE. Jesus told the woman’s critics to leave her alone. “She has done what she could.” (Mark 14:8) Have you given your best to Jesus in worship and witness? I met a woman in a motorized wheelchair. She lives in a low income, high-rise apartment building. She can’t do much but she makes and passes out Jesus rocks. This young lady in a wheelchair takes smooth, round pebbles puts a cross sticker on it and on the back with a marker pen writes, “Jesus loves you.” I found another one of her Jesus rocks yesterday on a newspaper box. She engaged an elementary principle in worship and witness. “She has done what she could.” Mary had her critics but Jesus praised her. What about you? Are you doing your best to worship and witness for Jesus? AN EXPRESSION OF THE GOSPEL. Jesus revealed the spiritual application of Mary’s selfless act.

letters to the editor

his coming November we will be voting for the top office of President of America. It would be imperative that we have all the facts before we enter that voting booth. This will be the most critical election in history. For sure we need to know the true facts regarding the status of our country. Without a doubt the economy should be high on our list. We hear a lot about the national debt where the deficit just passed 19 trillion dollars. We need to understand just what one trillion is. We all know what one million is. Count 999,999 plus 1 and you have a million. It takes one thousand million to make one billion. Then it takes one thousand billion to make one trillion. So we owe over 19 trillion to people we have borrowed from that we pay interest to; people like China, Japan, etc. We also have a debt of unfunded liabilities that are estimated anywhere from 127 trillion up to 211 trillion depending on who is calculating the total. They are the amount, at any given time, by which future payment

9

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

obligations exceed the present value of funds available to pay them. Obviously this is totally unsustainable and can never be paid off. To give you a little better perspective of how much this is, assuming we balance the budget from now on and that we paid one billion dollars a day 365 days a year, it would take thousands of years to pay it off. Obviously that is not going to happen. Believe it or not, that total GNP (Gross National Product) including the USA, of all the nations of the world is only 78 trillion dollars. How did this happen? We didn't do it per se; it was done by the politicians we elected. You see they know very little about economics but they are very good at making promises. I'm talking about both political parties. Our founding fathers had no way of foreseeing this over 200 years ago when they wrote the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We can't blame them. They wanted to keep the Federal Government small because they migrated to America to get away from the tyrants, kings, dictators, etc. The saw the Federal's

duty to protect the citizens in time of war or disaster. They were to serve one or two terms and return to their everyday jobs. So what happened? Today they spend millions to get elected to President of Congress that pays $200,000 to $400,000 (President) and yet serve as long as they can stay in office They have their own medical plan, their own retirement plan and stay in office as long as they are reelected. And they all end up millionaires. I will close this for now, but there is much more. Future tops will include: inflation, unemployment, taxes, cost of living, social security and Obamacare.

by Samantha Weaver • It was President Franklin Roosevelt who made the following sage observation: "Government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob." • Are you a ceraunophiliac? If so, Central Florida, is the place to live. The area between Tampa Bay on the peninsula's west coast and Cape Canaveral on the east coast is known as Lightning Alley, and Florida is the lightning capital of the United States — an excellent home for anyone who has an extreme love of thunder and lightning. • Singer Katy Perry reportedly has a cat named Kitty Purry. • If you're an animal lover who's fond of Corgis — the Welsh dog known for its extremely short legs — you might want to take a look at the Munchkin cat. Only recognized as a separate breed in 1995, this cat is characterized by the shortness of its legs. • When Edgar Allan Poe first started writing his most famous poem, "The Raven," he intended it to be short. Over the next decade, though, he kept adding to it, until it finally reached a length of 18 verses. The poem's publication in 1845

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

had a mixed critical reception; William Butler Yeats called it "insincere and vulgar" and said "its execution [is] a rhythmical trick," and Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I see nothing in it." "The Raven" was wildly popular with the public, though, and Poe became —

for a brief time — the most famous writer in America. *** Thought for the Day: "He who does not bellow the truth when he knows the truth makes himself the accomplice of liars and forgers." — Charles Peguy © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Consider moving beyond the usual methods to find a more creative means of handling a difficult on-the-job situation. Avoid confrontation and, instead, aim for cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seasonal change creates a new look for the outdoors. It also inspires Taureans to redo their own environments, and this is a good week to start redoing both your home and workplace. Enjoy. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs to be straightened out so the wrong impression isn’t allowed to stand. If necessary, offer to support the use of a third party to act as an impartial arbitrator. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A career change offering what you want in money and responsibilities could involve moving to a new location. Discuss this with family members before making a decision. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Feeling miffed over how you believe you were treated is understandable. But before you decide to “set things straight,” make sure the whole thing wasn’t just a misinterpretation of the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Showing you care makes it easier to build trust and gain an advantage in handling a delicate situation. What you learn from this experience also will help you understand yourself better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Planning for the future is fine, especially if you include the roles

that family members may be asked to play. Don’t be surprised if some hidden emotions are revealed in the process. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Making choices highlights much of the week, and you have a head start here, thanks to your ability to grasp the facts of a situation and interpret them in a clearcut manner. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Carrying a torch can be a two-way situation: It can either keep you tied to the past or help light your way to the future. The choice, as always, has to be yours. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your watchwords this week are: “Focus.” “Focus.” “Focus.” Don’t let yourself be distracted from what you set out to do. There’ll be time later to look over other possibilities. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A workplace opportunity might require changes you’re not keen on making. Discuss the plusses and minuses with someone familiar with the situation before you make a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Love and romance are strong in your aspect this week. If you’ve already met the right person, expect your relationship to grow. And if you’re still looking, odds are you’ll soon be finding it. BORN THIS WEEK: You approach life in a wise and measured manner, which gives you an edge in many areas. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
