There are those among us who start thinking about pitchers and catchers as soon as the last out is recorded at the end of the World Series. I used to be one of those people, but then life happens and you've got other things to worry about. Besides, so many people don't understand spring training. I was listening the other day to a spring-training game between the Phillies and Yankees. At one point, C.C. Sabathia faced Ryan Howard. One of the announcers remarked that this would have been a very compelling matchup a decade or so ago. The color announcer readily agreed. Another batter came to the plate, he too was a veteran guy. "He's just struggling to make the roster ... he's been willing to travel to far away games ... it's tough." "Yeah, it really is," chimed the color announcer. "He almost wants to be cut now so he can maybe catch on with another team."

Now do you see what I mean about baseball in spring? It's not about hope springing eternal ... it's a pretty grim place. It's a place where bright stars of yesterday go to flame out in front of smaller crowds, farther away from prying eyes, where it won't hurt as much. It's a place where power pitchers who got hurt try to practice pitching from another arm slot. It's where old knock-the-everloving-crap-outta-the-ball sluggers of yore are told to open up their stance and slap at the ball like Punch and Judy. And there's one guy down at the end of the dugout, kneeling up onto the top step, eating seeds and watching more intently as the game goes on. Come the eighth or ninth inning, they're expected to "look alive" and "hustle out there." He's all smiles because there is little pressure on him. Can he crack the outfield? Nope ... highpaid free agents occupy every outfield and infield spot. There are plenty of catchers in the bullpen. But there's a roster spot for him,

even if there are plenty of utility fielders and pinch hitters. Why? Because he's fast and alert, knows how hard the outfielders throw and knows the signals. His only goal is to score a run. This man is the pinch runner. The New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals of the 1920s and '30s used to carry a pinch runner on their rosters, and that's all they ever did — pinch run. Some of the guys they used as pinch runners had long, accomplished careers in the minors, but it didn't matter back then. You were just happy to get a job. Singers get paid to sing, other people write songs for them. That was the way it worked. In baseball, that translates to "the other guy hits, you run for him, you both cash a check at the end of each week, and the hitter's check is larger." So this spring and all next season, let's elevate the status of this long-misunderstood specialist. Last season, we honored the long reliever, the year before it was the infield shift that caught everyone's eye, now the pinch runner's time has come. Let's look alive out there and raise a toast to the guy who you call on when you're in a real pinch. Here's to the hustlers out there! God bless them all! Kaskaskia College dedicated its new Nashville Education Center yesterday to a great crowd of Washington County citizens as thanks were given and recognitions were shared. The event was held March 29 at the Center where tours of the facility were given and presentations were presented by several Kaskaskia staff. KC Board Chairman, Bill Hawley, said “The new Nashville Center is truly a beautiful facility that many people have brought to reality. This new center will pay big dividends for Washington County and to the state. It is will deep gratitude that we honor the donors and all involved today”. The 11,500 square foot center has four classrooms, a conference room, a science lab, an allied health lab, a computer lab, a distance learning lab, a quiet testing area, an open computer lab for use by the public, student commons

area, as well as administrative offices and business incubator offices for local entrepreneurs. The parking lot has just over 100 parking spaces. The director of the Nashville Center, Ruth Barczewski explained how the community came together to make the new facility possible as she thanked leaders of Washington County. Nashville Mayor Ray Kolweier also gave a thank you to those in attendance. “A big thank you to everyone involved in this project. It is certainly going to be a great asset to the people of Washington County.” Co-chairs of the Nashville Campaign, Sheila Bu rcham and Br i an Heckert were also on hand and spoke to the crowd. Sheila Burcham added, “It was a pleasure to work on this project and it has truly been a wonderful journey. Thanks to everyone who was involved and for the community for coming together. This

community will be blessed with this great facility for many years to come.” Brian Heckert told the crowd the project was definitely a team effort “with a lot of people who came together to do a great project. This new facility will offer many opportunities to the citizens of Washington County for many years.” Also on hand for comments were KC President and CEO Dr. Penny Quinn, KC Support Specialist Donna Matanane, Director of Admissions, Cheryl Boehne, and Vice President of Administrative Services, Nancy Kinsey. There is still time to become part of the project. Brick pavers, which will become a permanent part of the outdoor plaza/entryway, are being sold. A 4” by 8” paver, with up to three lines of engraving, are available for a donation of $150, while 8” by 8” pavers are available for $300.

The Marketing Committee of the Washington County Farm Bureau recently offered the FFA members and agriculture students in the county with an opportunity to compete in the 7th Annual “Commodity Challenge” contest. The Washington CFB’s “Commodity Challenge” centered on an online, interactive commodity game, using current market prices that allowed participants to test their knowledge and practice their marketing skills without the financial risk. Through the exercise, participants traded corn, soybeans, and wheat on the cash, futures, and options markets to help them learn about the “ins and outs” of t o d a y ’s c o m m o d i t y markets. The exercise ran from January 4 through March 11, 2016. It was the hope of the committee that this exercise complimented the current Ag business curriculum, and that the students were able to learn valuable skills while having fun. To further encourage the students to do their best, the Farm Bureau even agreed to offer some cash incentives to the top marketers from each of the high schools in the county. Eight (8) students from Ms. Bond’s class in Nashville and seven (7) students from Mr. Berg’s Ag Business class at Okawville High School took us up on the offer to test their marketing skills against their Advisor and each other. At the conclusion of the event, cash

Koerkenmeier. Second place and $50 went to Kirklen Meier. Finally, third place and a $25 check was awarded to Mallory Unverfehrt. The Marketing Committee would like to thank Mr. Berg, Ms. Bond, and the students from both schools for their cooperation and spirited competition, and look forward to repeating the contest in the future.

Catch Of The Day

Spring has finally arrived, teasing us with warmer weather yet to come–the hot days of Summer. I love fried fish, hush puppies, slaw and baked beans. I always consider that menu a summer treat! Hush puppies always remind me of a story I heard as a kid. I was always told as a kid, hush puppies were created in the fishing camps along the coast. While camp cooks were frying fish, they would throw scraps of fried batter to the barking dogs and yell, "Hush puppies!"

Hush Puppies 1 cup cornmeal 1½ tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. sugar 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 egg beaten 1/3 cup minced onion

1/2 cup all purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. garlic powder 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper 2/3 cup milk Vegetable oil for frying

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add egg, milk, and onion, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Let batter stand 3 to 5 minutes. While batter is standing, start heating oil to 375° F. in a large, deep skillet. Drop batter by rounded tablespoonfuls into hot oil. Fry, turning once, for 3 to 5 minutes, or until hush puppies float to top of oil and are golden brown. Drain well on paper towels. Yields about 1½ dozen.

The big question and news this week: Is Donald Trump at a tipping point? Wisconsin votes Tuesday, April 5 with Cruz 10% ahead in some polls and 42 total delegates to be had. Hillary was caught on tape lying again, accusing the Sanders campaign of lying when they said she took money from energy and fossil fuel companies. Not true, Hillary! You did, in fact, take big bucks from the fossil fuel industry. Trump's response on the hypothetical of abortion becoming illegal made big news. Should women be punished for having an illegal abortion? Cruz announced he wasn't in the habit of supporting someone who attacked his wife. Then there was Obama's statement about a potential President needing foreign policy experience and Trump's lack of it. I guess he forgot he had little himself. Anyway you want to slice it, this Presidential race in both parties is what I call a joke! The slate of candidates are all flawed in one way or another. Could this be a sign of the times, stemming from the lawless Commander-in-Chief that now has the keys to the front door of the White House? Stepping back and looking at the current slate, the choices start with a woman that can't be trusted, who is being investigated by the FBI, who even went so far as to lie to the families of her, yes her, Secretar y of State (Benghazi) victims. Next up is B ernie

Sanders. Put the numbers on the table. His ideas won't work. I compare Bernie's plans to Obama's ACA, etc. Yes, it's not working. Sanders is a "free for all but the rich" socialist, not at all what this country is about. Then there is Ted Cruz, or should I say lying Ted Cruz, a man that will stoop to the lowest level to get what he wants. He blames everything he has done — from Ben Carson to his latest (attacks on Trump's wife before Trump's camp attacked Cruz's wife) — on his campaign staff. But hold on, Cruz, Melania Trump is quite the entrepreneur in her own right, and it takes a smart person to speak two or three languages; she speaks five. The only thing Cruz is good at is creating three-ring circuses. We would be better off if his wife was running. Oh, and let's not forget Donald Trump, whom the Republican establishment and the media continue to s ab ot age. The latest problem was the trick question posed by the flaming liberal media on illegal abortion and a question on punishment for women. And last but not least is John Kasich, who has a great track record as the governor of Ohio and in Congress. However, he was a lobbyist for seven years following his stint in Congress. How will this work out? In my opinion, the lawlessness lives on with the fixed race in the Democratic party. It's going to be Hillary Clinton, another Barack Obama. And it depends on what the Re-

publican establishment does. If they continue to play their ridiculous games and fight the one who, at this point, is the people's choice — Donald Trump — then it's going to be Hillary Clinton, because Mr. Trump could run as an Independent, splitting the Republican Party or destroying it! So at this point, knowing with the exception of a miracle John Kasich won't make it, I believe Donald Trump is the best choice. And at this point it certainly is the Republican Party's race to lose, but the same held true in 2012 and they blew it. Any party that couldn't beat Barack Obama, whose first term was a disaster, well, there's not much more to say. It's a no-brainer. And in the end, if the choice is lying Ted Cruz against lying Hillary Clinton, the only way he'll beat her is if she gets what she deserves and is indicted. In closing, let me share a post on Facebook that says it all, "Love him or hate him, Donald Trump has shown the entire nation irrefutably, explicitly and beyond any shadow of a doubt the U.S government and their media propagandists are corrupt to the core. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Every week that I go to the county jail, I meet men and women who have made bad choices. All of us, at one time or another, have made faulty decisions in life. A mark of spiritual maturity is the ability to make right decisions. The apostle Paul gives us vital keys to make godly and wise decisions. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2) If you want to make godly and wise decisions, decisions that glorify God, apply these eight tests for decision making. TEST. “Has God already spoken about it in His Word?” Wise and godly decisions will never be contrary to God’s Word. It is, therefore, imperative to know God’s Word. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction is r i g hte ou s n e s s .” ( I I Timothy 3:16) Measure ever decision by the rule of scripture. (Psalm 119:105) THE SECRECY TEST. “Would it bother me if everyone knew this was my choice?” “The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.” (Proverbs 11:3) In high school, the athletic director asked me to take a box of jacket letters, pins, and awards to the office. A classmate passed me in the hall and asked me to give him some. When I refused, he said, “Why not? No one will know.” I replied, “I will and God will.” Jesus said, “For nothing is

secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.” (Luke 8:17) We will give an account to Christ Jesus. THE SURVEY TEST. “What if everyone followed my example?” “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” (I Timothy 4:12) Your decision will affect others positively or negatively. T H E SPI R I T UA L TEST. “Am I being people pressured or Spirit-led?” Paul challenges us, “Be not conformed to this world.” (Romans 12:2) Any dead fish can go with the current, but it takes a live one to go against it. Decide if you are going to be a God pleaser or men pleaser. (Galatians 1:10) THE STUMBLING TEST. “Could this cause anot he r p e rs on to stumble?” Would your decision be a bad testimony and turn someone away from Christ or weaken their faith? (Romans 14:21) THE SERENITY TEST. “Have I prayed and received peace about this decision?” If your decision is God’s will, He will fill your heart and mind with His perfect peace.

(Philippians 4:6-7) Let God’s peace be the umpire of your heart. THE SANCTIFICATION TEST. “Will this keep me growing in the character of Christ?” Paul tells to be “transformed into the image of Christ by the renewing of our mind.” (Romans 12:2; II Corinthians 3:18; I Thessalonians 5:21-23) Any decision that would hinder your growth in Christ likeness is not a wise or godly decision. THE SUPREME TEST. “Does this glorify God?” Paul tells us that we are “to prove what is the good and acceptable will of God.” (Romans 12:2) Ask yourself, will this decision glorify God? “Therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (II Corinthians 10:31) “Walk as children of light . . . and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8, 10) Perhaps like David you have made a bad decision. God is merciful. Pray David’s prayer of repentance. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:1011) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

GIRL SCOUTS USA NATIONAL YOUNG WOMAN OF DISTINCTION AWARD WINNER Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world through their Girl Scout Gold Award projects. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. As the Girl Scout Gold Award celebrates 100 years of girls changing the world, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) will highlight some of our shining stars who exemplify the greatness of this award. Dara Weaver-Holmes of Carbondale, IL was always active in Girl Scouts. As a teen, she didn’t just stick with Girl Scouting – she excelled – earning the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award her senior year. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Dara organized a highly successful career fair and virtual career website. “I kept hearing how young Americans were not trained to enter the work world,” she said. “I have never liked to be at the bottom. It’s just not me. I got tired of hearing how we were not preparing American youth and decided to start preparing us,” added Dara. Dara’s initiative and successful Gold Award project paid off. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois chose to nominate her for the highly honored award of National

Yo u n g Wo m a n o f Distinction. Each year, ten exceptionally inspiring Girl Scout Gold Award recipients from throughout the country are chosen by Girl Scouts of the USA as National Young Women of Distinction. Dara was selected by GSUSA as a 2012 Yo u n g Wo m a n o f Distinction which also came with a $3,000 scholarship, an all-expense paid trip to GSUSA’s national convention and exclusive leadership opportunities with the organization. Dara contributes a lot of who she is today to Girl Scouting and earning the Girl Scout Gold Award. “Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award gave me the opportunity to give speeches around the country, allowed for networking opportunities and provided a strong sense of family. Several of us Gold Award recipients remain in touch today,” she said. And, she encourages other Girl Scouts to set goals and achieve the Gold Award. “Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do it. I heard that a lot throughout my life, but Girl Scouts pushed me forward and allowed me to fulfill my dreams,” Dara added. Dara’s success continues today. She currently attends Southern Illinois University in Carbondale,

IL. In 2012, Dara cofounded their local chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists with Jasmine Jacks on. D ara was President of the chapter until the fall of 2015. This spring, she will graduate from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a minor in American Sign Language. Upon graduation, Dara will be applying to attend law school. The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes a Girl Scout's commitment to excellence as she develops skills and values to meet present and future challenges in her life. To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, a Girl Scout Senior or Girl Scout Ambassador must design and carry out a project that fulfills a need within a girl’s community, creates change, and is sustainable. The project must be completed with a suggested minimum of 80 hours of work. Only about 5 percent of eligible girls earn the prestigious Gold Award. Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is the largest voluntary organization for girls in the world. Its sole focus is to meet the needs of all girls (ages 5-17) from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy

IDENTIFYING SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT In January of 2014, fouryear-old Myls Dobson died in a New York City apartment from injuries sustained after days of abuse by his caregiver. Janaie Jones admitted to burning Myls, beating him with belts and hangers and keeping him locked up and alone in the bathroom for long, extended periods of time. Jones said this was all just a form of corporal punishment to control the young boy.

In another horrifying instance of child abuse, a couple from Monroeville, Ind. were arrested the same month and charged with felony child neglect after several of their children were left in a frigid van parked outside of a motel. The remainder of the children were zip-tied to a chair in a motel room. Stories like these may be shocking, but unfortunately

they are not rare. The organization Child Help says a report of child abuse or neglect is made every ten seconds in the United States. Every year, more than three million reports of child abuse are made, and around four to seven children die each day due to neglect and abuse. Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education. While many cases of abuse are discovered and reported, it's likely that many more are not. It is estimated that between 50 and 60 percent of

child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates. Third-party observers may be unaware abuse is taking place until it is too late. Child abuse can be hard to distinguish, but certain visual clues or changes in behavior may indicate there is a problem. The Child Abuse Prevention Center and other organizations offer these signs of child abuse or neglect. • There may be visible signs of injury, including bruises or burns. • Abused children may appear scared or anxious.

They may also seem withd r aw n o r d e p re s s e d . However, abused children also may act like nothing is wrong or become "class clowns" in an attempt to avoid unpleasant feelings. • Some abused kids may fear going home or to places where they may be abused. • Changes in school performance may indicate a problem. Some children will fall behind on work or have difficulty concentrating. Others may do especially well on tests or be obsessive about getting good grades for fear of punishment. • Abused and neglected children may suffer from a lack of personal care or hygiene. Clothing may not be appropriate for the weather or appear dirty. • Abused kids could have sleep disturbances that cause them to appear tired. • Behaviors such as bedwetting, thumb-sucking or other habits of early childhood may be brought on by abuse. Some children may have memory problems or stop speaking. • Children who are abused may balk at normal, appropriate touch. They may not be able to distinguish between good and bad touch. • Risk-taking behavior may be present in abused children. The youngsters may be testing their minds and bodies to extremes or looking for another form of escapism.

• Children who have been sexually abused may exhibit overly sexualized behavior or use explicit sexual language. If you have concerns that abuse is taking place, report your feelings to a local or state child protective service agency or the police precinct. Doing so could save a child's life. If you suspect a child has been harmed or is at risk of abuse or neglect, call the Illinois DCFS 24-hour Child Abuse Hotline at 800-25ABUSE (800-252-2873). If you believe a child is in immediate danger you should call 911 first. Many people hesistate to call because they fear the children will be separated from their families. In fact, area agencies will offer counseling to affected families and attempt to keep the family unit intact. Removing children from their home and placing them in foster care is a last resort. ADDRESSING COMMON CONCERNS ABOUT EXERCISE AFTER 50 Exercise is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. Including exercise in your daily routine can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and exercise can even sharpen mental acuity, reduce anxiety and improve mood. But as beneficial as exercise can be, many men and women, particularly men and women over the age of 50, who have not laced up their sneakers in years are hesitant to begin an exercise regimen for a variety of reasons, potentially putting their long-term health at risk. Regardless of a person's age, beginning a new exercise regimen can be intimidating. But it's especially so for men and women over the age of 50, who might not know where to begin or how to approach adopting a healthier lifestyle. According to the National Institute on Aging, the following are a

15

few points men and women should know as they attempt to improve their physical fitness with a more active lifestyle. * Exercise is safe even if you have not been physically active in a long time. Many older men and women worry that suddenly embracing physical fitness after years of inactivity may be detrimental to their health. But that's only true if men and women don't exercise caution at the outset of their routines. When beginning the routine, take things very slowly at first, choosing to walk or bike every day rather than hitting the treadmill and adjusting it to maximum resistance. When strength training, start off with very little weight so your muscles can grow acclimated to the motions and you can get the exercises down pat. As you grow more comfortable and your body starts to feel more

up to the challenges of daily exercise, you can begin to gradually alter your cardiovascular and strength training workouts to make them more challenging. * Exercise can make existing medical conditions more manageable. Men and women over the age of 50 who have preexisting medical conditions are likely to find that exercise alleviates rather than exacerbates their physical problems. The NIA notes that studies have shown that regular exercise and physical activity can benefit people with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. But it's still recommended that men and women with preexisting medical conditions consult with their physicians before making any lifestyle changes. Some conditions may affect a person's ability to be active, and it's best to get the goahead from a physician

is a wonderful way of using your Long Term Policy! Bills add up quickly when you can no longer take care of yourself and your needs exceed what family and friends can provide. Buying a long-term care insurance policy can be a way of making sure your future physical needs will be met.

before beginning an exercise regimen. Doctors may even suggest certain activities that have been known to alleviate particular conditions. * Exercise reduces fatigue, so sitting around to preserve strength is not effective. Exercise improves strength and energy levels, so sitting on the sideline to preserve your strength is counterproductive and could lead to serious medical problems. The "Report on Physical Activity and Health" from the U.S. Surgeon General's office noted that men and women who are inactive are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who

are more active. While getting adequate rest and giving your body ample time recover from physical activity is essential, your body won't benefit by avoiding exercise to preserve your strength. However, even moderate physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce fatigue. * No one is too old to exercise. It's not uncommon for men and women in their golden years to think they are too old to exercise. Some may feel that their toned down workouts cannot possibly be making much of an impact thanks to the physical limitations old age has

put on their bodies, while others may think it's unwise for someone in their 70s or 80s to be physically active. But no one is too old to exercise, as exercise helps the body stay strong and fit even when you can no longer max out on the bench press or squat hundreds of pounds. Scaling back your exercise routine will be necessary as you get older, but that does not mean you cannot still enjoy and benefit from physical activity. Continuing to exercise as you age is a great way to improve your quality of life and stay as active as possible well into your golden years.

NATURAL WAYS TO BEAT SEASONAL ALLERGIES The arrival of warmer weather changes the landscape completely. Animals come out of hiding and hibernation while trees and flowers bloom anew. The spring season can be an exciting time for naturalists and lovers of the great outdoors because they can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of nature. But for many people, spring also marks the start of allergy season and spending time outdoors can become downright uncomfortable for them. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology says nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people

in the United States. Allergic diseases, including asthma, are the fifth most prevalent chronic diseases among people of all ages and the third most common in children. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, can occur in spring, summer and/or early fall. People who experience hay fever often can attribute their symptoms to sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses, weeds, or airborne mold spores. No two allergy sufferers are alike, so medications that may work for one person may be only mildly effective for another. Many medications can cause side effects, which may be just as frustrating

as the initial allergy symptoms. Treatments may target sneezing and itching but fail to clear up congestion. Drowsiness, dry mouth and nasal irritation may be side effects of common allergy drugs. People who want to

avoid allergy medication can look to natural remedies to alleviate their symptoms. Whether used alone or in concert with traditional medicine, these remedies may make spending time outdoors more pleasant.

• Try probiotics. Probiotics, those friendly bacteria that reside in the digestive system, can do more than just treat an upset stomach. Naturopathic doctors say that probiotics also can influence the immune system and may help strengthen its response to common allergens. Since probiotics are good for replenishing healthy bacteria in the body anyway, many people may want to keep taking them once their allergy symptoms have come and gone. • Use neti pots or saline sprays. A small amount of saltwater can rinse away allergens, such as pollen, that get lodged in the nose. These rinses also can help clear up conges-

tion and flush out any other irritants. • Load up on omega-3s. A German study published in the journal Allergy found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didn’t regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s can help fight inflammation. Drinking more fluids and using spices in cooking can help flush out allergens as well. • Don’t forget vitamin C. Vitamin C is an immune-system booster and may help prevent the formation of histamine in the body, a substance responsible for many allergy symptoms.

doctors be the first healthcare professional to detect the presence of their diabetes. If an ophthalmologist suspects an underlying medical condition, he or she will likely refer men and women to their primary care doctors for

a more thorough examination. Going to the eye doctor can do more than ensure your vision is sharp. It’s a life-saving decision for many people who have major health conditions diagnosed through the eyes.

YEARLY EYE EXAMS CAN REVEAL MORE THAN JUST VISION TROUBLE More evidence points to the importance of routine eye exams, not only to pinpoint potential conditions of the eye, but also to serve as windows to diseases that affect the entire body. Now more than ever it is essential to

make and keep annual eye exams, as they can help to reveal the first signs of serious ailments. Doctors from around the world say dozens of diseases — from certain cancers to arthritis to high blood pressure — can

show symptoms in the eye. Under the watchful and knowing gaze of an eyecare professional, individuals can get early diagnosis and begin treatment promptly. According to Dr. Roy Chuck, chair of the De-

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL FOCUS The technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the Internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive. • Get more exercise. Studies have shown that

exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19 studies involving more than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of exercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporati ng s ome e xe rc is e, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous

workout, into their midday routines. • Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oft-overlooked cause of loss of focus. When ner vous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concentrate. Professional athletes have long espoused to the virtues of breathing exercises as a means to calming their nerves, and professionals can follow suit. Some simple breathing exercises can help busy professionals multi-

task more effectively by helping them concentrate on the tasks at hand and overcome the distraction of having so much to do at one time. • Stay hydrated. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue among women. While the loss of focus was considered insubstantial and the study only examined women, remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day. • Get adequate sleep. One of the best ways to improve focus during the

GET THE FACTS ON OCULAR MIGRAINES While many people are familiar with the term “migraine headache,” few may have experienced an ocular migraine. Ocular migraines, sometimes referred to as “eye migraines,” are often harmless and may disappear rather quickly. The organization All About Vision defines ocular migraines as painless, temporary visual disturbances that usually affect one eye. Ocular migraines can be disturbing because of their symptoms. People experiencing ocular migraines may experience scintillations, or bright flashing lights or flickering. Wavy lines surrounding an enlarging blind spot (scotoma) also can occur. Blind spots may start small but quickly grow bigger and move across one’s field of vision. Sometimes an ocular migraine is accompanied by a migraine headache and certain symptoms, such as light sensitivity and nausea, that are associated with migraine headaches. The National Institutes of Health notes that, if an ocular migraine is accompanied by a headache, the pain from the migraine is often located on the

17

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

same side of the head as the eye that is experiencing the ocular migraine. Migraines in general are not well understood, and the same can be said for ocular migraines. The causes ocular migraines is not exactly known, but it is thought to be related to constricted blood vessels in the eye, possibly in the retina. The Mayo Clinic says that while visual sensations associated with ocular migraines can induce anxiety and interfere with certain activities, the condition usually is not considered serious and can ease up within 20 to 30 minutes. Some people do not even realize their symptoms may be migraine-related because of the lack of associated headache. Several more serious conditions can cause similar symptoms to the relatively benign ocular migraine. Men and women who frequently experience visual disturbances should consult with an expert who can rule out other ailments. Everything from an embolism to tumors of the eye to optic neuropathy may produce symptoms similar to ocular migraines. If an ocular migraine is a one-time occurrence,

day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of negative consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Research has shown that sleep deprivation compromises alertness and concentration, making it more difficult to focus at work and tackle tasks that require deep analysis and thought. In addition, a survey from the National

Sleep Foundation found that sleep-deprived men and women are less likely to exercise and eat healthy diets, each of which can boost mental acuity. Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration.

These days, we're spending more time at work sitting in front of a screen than ever before. We're becoming less active, which can increase our risk of heart disease, stroke and other diseases. Take the first step to a healthier life by taking part in the American Heart Association's National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 6. Walking is low-risk and easy to start. It can help keep you fit and reduce your risk of serious diseases, like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and more. A re g u l a r w a l k i n g program can also improve your cholesterol profile, lower blood your pressure, increase your energy and stamina, boost “couch potato” bone strength, and prevent weight gain. The American Heart Association recommends that adults get 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity

each week. Even short 10 minute activity sessions can be added up over the week to reach this goal. If you would benefit from lowering your blood pressure or cholesterol, aim for 40 minute sessions of moderate to vigorous activity 3 to 4 times a week. You could do this by walking 2 miles briskly (about 4 miles/hr). If that’s too fast, choose a more comfortable pace. Get Ready All you need to get started are comfortable clothes and supportive shoes. Layer loose clothing, keeping in mind that brisk exercise elevates the body’s temperature. Shoes designed for walking or running are best. Make sure you have a little wiggle room between your longest toe (1/2") and the end of the shoe. Avoid cotton socks since they retain moisture and can promote blisters. Work On Your Technique Begin with short distances. Start with a stroll that feels comfortable (perhaps 5-10 minutes) and gradually increase your time or distance each week by 10-20 percent by adding a few minutes or blocks. If it’s easier on your joints and your schedule to take a couple of 10- to 20minute walks instead of one long walk, do it! Focus on posture. Keep your head lifted, tummy pulled in and shoulders relaxed. Swing your arms naturally. Avoid carrying hand weights since they put extra stress on your elbows and shoulders. Don’t overstride. Select a comfortable, natural step length. If you want to move faster, pull your back leg through more quickly. Breathe deeply. If you can’t talk or catch your breath while walking, slow down.

At first, forget about walking speed. Just get out there and walk! Pick Up The Pace To warm up, walk at an easy tempo for the first several minutes. Then gradually adopt a more purposeful pace. A good way to add variety is to incorporate some brisk intervals. For example, walk one block fast, two blocks slow and repeat several times. Gradually add more fast intervals with shorter recovery periods. Concentrate on increasing your speed while maintaining good posture. Walking hills is a great way to tone your legs. Using Nordic walking poles can help your burn more calories and give you better posture and overall muscle endurance. Treadmill walking, while not as scenic, can be convenient during bad weather. The end of your walk is an ideal time to stretch since your body is warmed up. Stretch your hamstrings and calves as well as your chest, shoulders and back. Hold each stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Track your progress. Although experts recommend walking at least 30 minutes a day, there are no hard and fast rules. Walking 60 minutes/day and brisk intervals will help you burn more calories. Fit walking into your schedule whenever you can. That may mean three 10-minute walks over the course of a day. The best schedule is one that keeps you walking and keeps you fit! Be Safe Avoid traffic accidents. Listening to lively music while you walk is a great way to energize your workout. But if you wear headphones,

keep the volume down and watch out for traffic that you may not hear. Wear light colors or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or glow stick if you walk when visibility is low. Walking on sidewalks is best, but if you have to walk on the street, stick to streets with lower speed limits. Faster streets are riskier because motorists are less likely to see pedestrians and cannot stop as quickly. Accidents involving pedestrians have an 85 percent chance of becoming fatal if the car is moving at 40 mph as compared to only 5 percent if the speed is 20 mph. Know your area. Pay attention to what businesses are open in the area you’ll be walking and know the location of emergency telephones. Walk on well-traveled streets rather than taking shortcuts in less crowded areas such as alleys or parking lots. If you give the message that you are calm, self-assured and have a purposeful gait, you’ll lower your chances of becoming a victim. Two heads are better than one. Walking with a partner or in groups discourages crime and may help alert you to dangers such as speeding motorists or unleashed dogs. If you experience foot, knee, hip or back pain when walking, STOP and check with your doctor to find out the cause. You may need special exercises or better shoes. If you have osteoarthritis and experience increased joint pain lasting an hour or two after walking, consider an alternate activity like stationery cycling or water exercise. But don’t stop exercising!

THE IMPORTANT ROLE PLAYED BY PHYSICAL THERAPISTS An injury or illness can impact a person’s mobility and ability to perform everyday activities. While medicine and other treatments can help the situation, physical therapists are often sought to help individuals get back on track. The American Physical Therapy Association says physical therapists examine each individual patient and develop plans using treatme nt te ch n i qu e s to promote mobility, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent further disability. In addition, physical therapists work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles. Physical therapists frequently work with patients’

larger medical teams to provide customized care depending on patients’ needs. Physical therapists may begin their treatment plans by gathering patients’ histories and reviewing any tests and imaging the patients may have had. This information, combined with physical examinations and studies of the injuries or illnesses, will help physical therapists to establish treatment plans for the patients. Men and women who have been told they need physical therapy can heed to the following tips as they look for therapists to work with. • Get a referral from your primary doctor or orthopedist. With some insurance plans, a referral will be needed for treatment. Otherwise, use your

insurance plan’s provider directory to find a physical therapist who accepts your insurance. • Check your insurance benefits to determine how much coverage you have for physical therapy. You may be limited to a certain number of sessions or have no restrictions at all. • Many physical therapists are board certified in one speciality. They have passed tests and have documented hours treating certain conditions. This can be helpful if you require a pediatric specialists or one who has expertise with the back or neck. Any physical therapist or therapist’s assistant should be qualified and licensed. • Ask if you will be the physical therapist’s only patient at an appointment. Some treat one individual

at a time while others may see two or three patients at a time. • Find out who will be treating you. You may be assigned the same therapist each time. If you are getting services at a therapy group, you may have a different therapist for each visit. • Always ask questions before and after a treatment so you can continue to work on the healing process on your own and so you know which activities are safe, which should change as your treatment progresses. Physical therapists play an integral role in helping restore patients’ mobility and helping them avoid further injury so that patients can maximize their quality of life.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a friend’s cat sight unseen. “Tara” is a beautiful young tigerstriped cat, but she claws at every furniture leg in the house. My sofa, for example, is pretty much ruined. How can I get this behavior to stop? — Patricia, via email DE A R PAT R I C IA : Almost all cats claw at handy chair legs, and often prefer the corners of sofas — the more expensive, the better, it seems. However, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your furniture for a friend’s cat. There are a few things you can do to minimize the scratching. I can’t guarantee that it will go away,

but you should be able to save future sofas from the same fate. First, protect your furniture legs (specifically the furniture that Tara is targeting the most) by wrapping thick cloth or even multiple layers of newspaper around them, and taping in place with masking tape. (Duct tape c ou l d l e ave b eh i nd residue.) To discourage Tara from clawing at the protective layer, cover it with plastic wrap or tape — when she sinks her claws into the tape, the uncomfortable sensation will stop the clawing. Next, give Tara some things that she CAN claw, and that she can spend her time with: multiple scratching posts and toys. Third, spend more time with Tara, playing, petting or just being in the same room. Help her work off extra energy and assure her that despite the change in homes, she has nothing to worry about — and

But this time you need to lay out all the facts and insist that everyone acknowledge his or her share of the mistakes. Then start again.
