GIRL SCOUTS CELEBRATE NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH IN APRIL
Submitted Photo
Stan and Lois Clark, who are pictured with two Girl Scouts.
Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois will join other Girl Scouts throughout the country to celebrate one of the Girl Scouts' most treasured resources during the month of April – the Girl Scout volunteers. Every day, Girl Scout volunteers bring girls experiences filled with fun, friendship, discovery, and so much more. That's why Girl Scouts join with Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, to celebrate the contribution of volunteers during
National Volunteer Week which is April 10-16, 2016. In addition, Girl Scouts will celebrate their leaders during Girl Scout Leader’s Day on April 22. With love, patience, and a deep dedication to enriching the lives of girls everywhere, these incredible leaders give of their time every day to mentor girls, inspire them, and help them discover the world around them and the spark inside them. Girl Scout leaders say they "t hin k t hat's pretty awesome!" In 2015, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois’ 4,500 volunteers donated an average of 420 hours each to help provide 13,000 girls a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The estimated dollar value of volunteer time provided is $45,511,200. “Our volunteers are an invaluable resource in providing a premier Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls in Southern Illinois,” said Villie M. Appoo, GSSI CEO. “Their dedication to the mission of building

girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place helps guide and encourage future leaders.” The mission of Girl Scouting states: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Girl Scouts is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls all girls - where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives - like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a not-for-profit organization supported by various United Ways throughout the region. Girl Scouts is a Proud Partner of United Way. I haven't the words to express enough heartfelt sympathy to the family of Timothy "Tim" Scott Beaty of Carbondale, Illinois, formerly of Centralia. Tim was the son of Don Beaty and Kittie McMillan. He is survived by both parents along with wife Jessica Beaty and son Jacob as well as sisters Jennifer and Erin. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, stepbrothers and stepsisters. We at the Shoppers Weekly wish we could do more for lifelong friend Don Beaty and his family, but what we can do is set the record straight and tell the real story of a very brave young man, 41 years old, that gave his life protecting two Southern Illinois University (SIU) female students. Timothy "Tim" Scott Beaty's life was tragically taken at 4:20 a.m. on March 27. The original story was that Tim died from a stray bullet while asleep in his bed. The Carbondale police were alerted to the incident by an individual that found shell casings near the intersection of West Walnut

and South Beveridge Streets in Carbondale that lead to the discovery of Beaty's body early Easter Sunday morning, March 27. But then the truth came out about Tim's final moments (in someone else's words) that is nearly beyond comprehension. Tim had died as he had lived. He was not only compassionate but fearless in his desire to help others, as he had demonstrated his entire life. It wasn't long before the truth began spreading, refuting the original story of a stray bullet that allegedly struck Tim in his bed while sleeping, which wasn't true! The truth was Tim had opened his apartment door to two young, female SIU students seeking shelter after fleeing the neighboring house party once shots were fired. Beaty was killed while protecting them and shielding them with his own body. When friend and fellow musician Andrew Staff heard the truth he said, "That was just Tim being Tim." So where does this leave grieving family and friends? They now know the truth, but they already knew their son, husband, father, family member, friend, and giving community member. They know he was always doing something for someone. He danced to his own drum, literally. He was a hero to many and a superhero to all humanity. Tim's final moments of bravery and selflessness didn't surprise anyone; it was the way he lived. At this time there have been three arrests made in this tragic event, and one arrest is pending. Three of the suspects are from the St. Louis, MO area. The fourth suspect, who is from Carbondale, is still being sought. So in the end, the question remains: Why? I haven't the answer. I don't think anyone does. But I do know there is something we can all do in honor of Timothy "Tim" Scott Beaty's memory, and that's to help his five-yearold son Jacob whose very own welfare has been put in jeopardy by his father's

America is facing an economic disaster! And we are the only ones who can do anything about it. Let me explain. In the last thirty years or so the country's debt has risen to the point that we are headed for a total collapse. The national deficit recently hit nineteen trillion dollars. That is money we have borrowed and pay interest on. It is owed to approximately twelve different entities including China, Japan, Belgium, and Brazil plus the U.S. Federal Reserve, the U.S. Social Security trust fund, U.S. individuals and institutions. Keep in mind that a thousand million is equal to one billion and it takes a thousand billion to equal one trillion. That is a drop in the bucket compared to the unfunded liabilities that are owed. Unfunded liabilities consist of money owed but there is no money available to pay for them. These debts are estimated to be about another 200 trillion dollars. Remember I said earlier that we were the only ones that can do something about it. No, we can't be expected to pay for it. What is more important is what created this massive debt. We the people elect the President and Congress. The Supreme Court is appointed by the President and must be approved by Congress. The people we elect actually run this country on our behalf. Obviously they are not very good at it. Let me point it out to you this way: Our founding fathers who adopted the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and The Bill of Rights were not politicians. They were individuals from all walks of life just like you and me. Their fathers had
migrated before them to America, the land of freedom and opportunity. As a matter of fact, of the 75 individuals who signed the Constitution, 67 were born in this country. They formed this nation as a republic of the people, for the people and by the people. A republic is a form of government in which power is explicitly vested in the people, who in turn exercise their power through elected representatives. Today the terms republic or democracy are virtually interchangeable, but historically the two differed. My point is that nowhere in any of the aforementioned documents does the word democracy appear. So today we seem to no longer have a government of the people, for the people and by the people, but one that is of the politicians, for the politicians and by the politicians. So why are they so concerned about saving their political parties? To my way of thinking, due to the debt they have placed upon this nation, they could only be thinking of themselves. The representative and senators make a basic salary of $174,000 per year. Majority and minority leaders make $193,400. The President ProTempore makes $223,500 and the Vice President (President of the Senate) makes $230,200. They do not participate in Obamacare but receive the same health insurance benefits as all federal employees and enjoy some of the lowest rates in the nation. They have a personal staff allowance for employees that can range anywhere from 26 to 60 staff members with maximum pay topping at $156,848 per year. In addition they have an expense allowance covering
job related expenses such as stationery, business cards, newsletters, domestic travel and lodging, and communication expenses. Plus they have free mail expenses and to add icing to the cake, they get free use of any military aircraft for foreign travel. All of this and they can retire after only one term at full pay. None of these items include the bribes (oops!) contributions they receive from lobbyists (who by the way out-number the Congress members in Washington) or the huge corporations. I guess this explains why they end up as multi-millionaires. The problem with this is that they are owned by the contributors, and power and greed enter the picture. Albert Einstein, considered to be a genius, once said, "If you keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result, it is insanity." I think this could very well apply, that is you continue to vote the same over and over again and expect different results; that too is insanity. If you are thinking of Hillary for President I hope you are aware of the following. How many people close to the Clintons have died? Ask the question on Google search. Hillary sold uranium to Russia and by some strange coincidence the Russian government donated millions to the Clinton Foundation. Just thought you might like to know before you decide. Personally, I don't know which is worse, her or Obama. Larry McCaskey _________________

Pledged delegates are based on state primary results, while super delegates can support any candidate. Keep in mind delegate results aren't final until the convention in July. So, to date, take away the super delegates and Clinton is only 219 delegates ahead. For you Clinton supporters, this one hasn't been as easy as you thought it might be! Bernie has won 8 of the last 9 states! So, who's on track for the Republican Party? Tracking candidates' progress requires more than
These calculations above don't include Saturday results. The Wy o m i n g Democratic presidential caucus was held Saturday, April 9 with Bernie Sanders taking the state. Bernie took 7 and Clinton garnished 11. Go figure that one! How did he get less delegates? On the Republican side, it was Cruz and falling behind, Donald Trump. The bottom line is Trump needs to take 61% of the delegates left; Cruz approximately 87% and Kasich 135% to clinch the Republican nomination. Just a note, Cruz is out stealing delegates. Is this election about the peoples' will? O ver the weekend Clinton and Sanders are back to their "Brooklyn, NY roots." This week the campaign goes to the heat of the battle—Brooklyn battling out who has the strongest ties, but trust neither Sanders or Clinton are in touch with reality (Imagine that!). Be sure and watch this Thursday's Democratic debate between Clinton and
Sanders. On to Paris terror suspect, Mohamed Abrini was arrested in Belgium over the weekend. Six people were arrested Friday in total including Abrini, suspected of being the man in the hat in the Brussels attacks, seen in an airport surveillance video moments before two deadly terror attacks in Brussels. Authorities can now question him about the Brussels airport bombings on March 22, part of the attacks that killed 32. Europe has a very heavy Muslim population! On a closing note a friend told me on Sunday that he had read that Obama has endorsed Hillary. It made my day, because in my opinion if he had, it gave many intelligent thinking humans one more of the 101 reasons NOT to vote for Hillary. On further research I couldn't confirm the endorsement. Oh well, one can only hope! In closing, let me recommend that all Christians see the movie God Is Not Dead #2. As Christians we are under siege. In the constitution and the Declaration of Independence it says nothing about the phrase "Separation of Church and State." It's time to take back our Christian rights! Until Next week. GIRL SCOUT TROOP #8653 MAKES DONATION TO MARINES Girl Scout Troop #8653 of Southern Illinois is a new troop that was established at the end of January. Because of their late start, they were only able to participate in Cookie Booth Sales. The Troop decided to give their customers an option of donating to a group of Marines that are at sea. They set a goal of 50 boxes, to be collected for the service men
and women. After the three weekends of booth sales the troop collected 80 boxes of various kinds of Girl Scout cookies to send to the Marines. Each troop member made a thank you card for the Marines to send with the cookies. Cookies were mailed March 27 and will take 6-8 weeks to reach the Marines. Pictured (L to R), back

WALK & RUN FOR WISHES EDWARDSVILLE POSHARD FOUNDATION DONATES MATTRESSES TO UMCH YOUTH RESIDENTS This year’s annual Walk & Run for Wishes Edwardsville will be held on May 14, 2016 at S outhern Illinois University Edwardsville Korte Stadium. The event will be led by a very special Grand Marshall. Alivia, 11 from Alton, IL had her wish to visit Walt Disney World granted in June 2008. Alivia was diagnosed with acute lymphatic in October of 2005, but she never let her illness slow her down. Even at her young age, Alivia loves to give back to Make-A-Wish and help other children with life threatening illnesses know the joy of having a wish granted. She does this by having a lemonade stand that donates all profits to the foundation. Alivia will be serving as the Grand Marshall for Walk & Run for Wishes Edwardsville and will share her story before she leads Walk & Run participants as they raise funds needed to make wishes like hers come true. Make-A-Wish is excited to announce that there will be special appearances made. Children will have the opportunity to get their face painted by Bebe the Clown
and pictures taken with characters from Star Wars and the movie Frozen. Frozen characters, Elsa and Anna will be singing as well. There will also be a special dance performance by the Metro East Dance Company. The journey begins with registration at 7:30 a.m. and includes a timed 5K run and a leisurely 1 mile walk along SIUE’s beautiful campus that starts at 9:00 a.m. Food, refreshments, music and entertainment will share in the celebration. Prizes are awarded for best youth and adult costumes in addition to awards for top fundraisers. The registration fee is $30 for adult 5k runners, $25 for adult 1 mile fun walkers, $15 for students ages 18-22, $10 for children ages 18 and under, and free for wish
families, “Virtual Walkers,” infants, and toddlers. Additional details and registration are available online at www.walkrunwish.org This year, Make-A-Wish Illinois will grant wishes to more than 700 children in Illinois who are living with life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, renal disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Wishes can be a turning point in a child’s battle against illness and help children feel stronger, more energetic and more willing and able to comply with treatment protocols. Ad d i t i o n a l l y, w i s h e s empower children to take control over an aspect of their lives while helping them feel less isolated and more selfconfident.

By Larry Cox Hair Wreath Q: I have a hair wreath in an elaborate frame. It is a family heirloom from the Civil War-era. I am curious about it. — Hope, Canton, Ohio A: Human hair was used during the Victorian-era to make jewelry such as rings,
lockets and bracelets. Hair also was used in wreaths, usually as mementos of a deceased family member. The wreaths often were cased in deep satin-lined frames and displayed in the family parlor. The practice was abandoned after about 1910. I occasionally have seen hair jewelry and wreaths in

Warning: Unless your Righteousness Exceeds Whenever I hear or see a warning, I pay attention, for it could save my life. Whenever Jesus gives a warning, I really pay attention! Listen to Jesus’ grave warning, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20) These religious Jews were radical adherents of the law of Moses. They displayed their fervor by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. But Jesus called them hypocrites and warned us not to be like them. He told us that if our righteousness did not exceed theirs, we would not enter the kingdom of heaven. But how can our righteousness exceed the zealous religious scribes and Pharisees? FAITH ALONE IS A MARK OF RIGHTOUSNESS. They missed the mark because they believed keeping the law of Moses and their good works made them righteous. The scriptures teach that Abraham was

not made righteous by the law, but by faith alone. “Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” (Romans 4:1-12) Only faith in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross can atone for sin and make one righteous. ( Ep h e s i a n s 2 : 8 - 9 ; Romans 3:21-22) By the works of the law no one if justified. FERVENT HEARTFELT PRAYER IS A MARK OF THE RIGHTEOUS. The Pharisees prayed long prayers, dressed in long robes, standing on the street corners to be seen of men. Jesus said they had their reward. “But when you pray . . . pray to your Father who sees in secret and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 5:5-8) Jesus gave the parable of the despised t a x - c ol l e c tor w ho prayed. He would not even look up to heaven but smote his breast and prayed, “God be merci-

ful to me a sinner.” Jesus said, “I tell you this man went down to his house justified rather than the ot h e r w h o e x a lt s himself.” (Luke 18:9-14) The righteous have p ow e r i n p r ay e r. “Confess your trespasses to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16) FASTING WITH SI NC E R I T Y I S A MARK OF THE RIGHTEOUS. The Pharisees practiced fasting but with wrong motives. They put on a sad countenance and appeared pious in their fasting to be admired by men. Jesus said, “When you fast . . . wash your face so that you do not appear to men . . . but to your Father who is in the secret place and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:16-18) FEEDING THE POOR AND NEEDY OUT OF COMPASSION IS A MARK OF THE RIGHTEOUS. The Pharisees gave alms to the poor and needy, but Jesus condemned them. “Take heed that you do not your charitable
deeds before men to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore... do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites. Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing... and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:1-4) Cornelius, a Roman centurion, was a devout man who prayed, fasted, and gave alms. God took note and sent Peter to share the Good News of Christ. Cornelius and his whole household came into the blessings of salvation. (Acts 10) Jesus gave us a warning that we dare not ignore. “Unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Repent and put faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Pray, fast, and give out of compassion and the Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Molded Salads I'm one that doesn't think a meal is complete without a side salad. As a matter of fact, I've been known to make a whole meal of a beautiful, healthy salad, a little french bread and a glass of Chardonnay. What could be better! However, some of my favorites are molded salads. Below are some of my favorites. There's nothing more refreshing in the warm spring and summer days to come than a cool, molded salad.

Ordering a hot dog. It’s a time-honored tradition for the three million plus Cardinals fans that throng to Busch Stadium every spring and summer. So is complementing it with ketchup and mustard. But this season, home games will feature some exciting new options: Original AllPurpose and BBQ Sauces from Country Bob’s, “The Signature Sauce of the St. Louis Cardinals.” “We are beyond thrilled about this opportunity,” said Terry Edson, President of Centralia, Illinois-based Country Bob’s regarding the partnership with the St. Louis Cardinals. “Our company bleeds Cardinal Red through and through. It’s just so exciting to think that millions of people will be able to try our products on their favorite stadium foods while rooting for their favorite baseball team.”

“The Signature Sauce of the St. Louis Cardinals” based right in the heart of Cardinals Nation.” Changing Up the Flavor Lineup Every manager needs a utility player. Someone who can play multiple positions or move around the line-up. Someone who can be counted on, regardless of the situation. Edson likens Country Bob’s Sauces to those much needed utility guys. “That’s what we really hope people take away after they try us,” said Edson. “Our sauces pair well with everything you’d expect to find at a ballgame: burgers, bratwurst, chicken, fries. Even more extravagant foods like prime rib or filet mignon. But it goes especially well with Cardinals Baseball.” With its tantalizing mixture of sweet and tangy, Country Bob’s will become yet another winning tradition at Busch Stadium and backyards this baseball season. But aspects favor rechecking a decision before declaring it final. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Information emerges for the business-driven Bovine who feels ready to restart a stalled project. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed at any time during the process. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Part of you wants to complete plans for an upcoming event, while your other self wants to see how things develop first. Compromise by moving ahead with your plans while being open to change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An unexpected change in a relationship could open up a problem or could lead to a much-needed and too-long-delayed reassessment of a number of matters. The choice is yours to make. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Time for the Lion to total the plusses and minuses resulting from recent personal and/or professional decisions. See what worked, what didn’t and why, and base your next big move on the results. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The clever Virgo can make persuasion work by presenting a case built on hard facts.
