the same age as I was when I got booted from that softball game. And wouldn't you just know it? He is sponsored by Under Armour, so I feel a certain kinship. Not just because of the apparel angle, but the loss of cool. A friend once told me that "He who loses their cool first, loses." As we now know, young Master Spieth quadruple bogied at The Masters, and the naysayers are gunning for him like a mosquito at sunset. "He didn't shake his hand"; "He never congratulated him"; "He told the cameras to step off "; and blah, blah, blah. Some have even said this loss will somehow hurt Under Armour, as some Wall Street pundits downgraded the stock. While I never returned to the field, you can bet that Jordan Spieth will be back. He's 22, and he had a bad hole. If he merely bogied on No. 12, he'd have won his second Masters. No matter what anyone tweets or memes about the kid, no matter what they've heard, trust me ... Spieth is no evil villain here. Put it in context, like my slide into second, to understand I guess you just had to be there.

Spieth No Evil This is a story about "The Good Ones," the greatest team you've never heard of. And you can't be blamed for that, since The Good Ones flew under the radar and only played intramural softball at the University of Maryland. The team played great ball, and if the magnificent-looking captain, a former freshman ballplayer with an alleged .314 career average, hadn't been injured in a freak fall down the basement stairs orchestrated by his cat, they probably would have taken home the trophy. The rest of the team was rounded out by other luminaries, including a few superstar Terp football players, ACC champion wrestlers and club hockey players. And as hard as it is to believe, this shabbily dressed group of athletic ragamuffins also featured Kevin Plank at first base. Plank, some of you stockholders, sports junkies and financialpublication readers may

So this team used to actually draw a bit of a crowd, even if most of the fans were their girlfriends. Maybe that's why the aforementioned captain of the team tried to argue a call in his last game. Maybe he felt he had to show some tenacity. OK, so the captain was me. This has been bugging me for a long time. Hang with me, here. I was thrown out at second but was safe by a Maryland mile. I tried to argue the call, but my body didn't play ball. Last week, while Donald Trump doubled down on Hillary Clinton playing the woman card, Ted Cruz picked his running mate, Carly Fiorina. Why? In my opinion, he had three reasons: 1) To combat Trump over his recent comment on Hillary playing the woman card. 2) To attract female voters. 3) To help him out in Indiana, a must win for Cruz to go on. None of the above is going to help. Sorry, Ted, let's face it, most have your number. Front runner Donald Trump was quick last week to react, calling the move a "waste of time." He continued, "Cruz can't win. What's he doing picking a Vice President?" I would have to agree with that. But we'll move on to the Indiana primaries for both parties, which will be over by the time you read this column. On the GOP side, as the clock ticked down with Trump in the lead, there was a scramble on Cruz's part to deny Trump a majority of delegates before the Republican Convention in July. Cruz let no page of the campaign playbook go to waste, while Donald Trump was backed by an endorsement from Bobby Knight, the former Indiana University coach, whose brash persona is matched only by his reputation as a consummate winner. Now folks, let me assure you, I'm not a sports person, but I know who Bobby Knight is, and I can assure everyone that endorsement did nothing but help Trump. It's a matter of fact Trump doesn't do second billings well, especially at his own rallies. He made an exception to introduce Mr. Knight. Then he predicted, "If we win Indiana," speaking to thousands gathered at the arena on the state fairgrounds in Indiana, "it's over, it's over." Last Friday the Governor of Indiana endorsed Ted Cruz, for what good that will do. I would agree, and with 57 delegates to be had, I'm going to call it for Trump in Indiana. On to the Democrats. The 2016 primary on both sides will start to wind down on Tuesday, May 3, with 83 delegates in play for the Democrats. There are a handful of contests the rest of May and June, but those could decide the final nominee prior to the

summer convention for both sides. Unfortunately, I'm going to call Indiana for Hillary Clinton. Keep in mind the delegate count is what everyone is watching. See the sidebar at right for a list of the remaining contests in May and June for political conventions. My early prediction is Trump and Clinton for the nominees, unless Hillary is indicted (as she should be) and the Republican Party gets to the convention and goes against the peoples's will, and then God help them. Anyway that's my prediction. And as if things aren't bad enough for Ted Cruz, late last week John Boehner called Cruz "Lucifer in the flesh" and a "miserable SOB." Boehner said as well, "I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with most everyone but have never worked with a more miserable SOB in my life." Boehner, who retired in October from Congress, also let loose on Kasich. He concluded by saying he would vote for Trump. Hopefully he'll get that opportunity. To Boehner's comment that he had "never worked with a more miserable SOB in his life," Cruz's comeback was, "I've never worked with John Boehner." And to Boehner's Lucifer statement that Cruz was, "Lucifer in the flesh," Cruz said something like, "Boehner? Boehner who? Don't know him." Well, Ted, it sounds like John Boehner knows you! Until next week. The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. In order for your letter to be considered for publication, you must provide your signature and an address and phone number where you can be reached. Addresses and phone numbers will not be published.

The Washington State Democratic Party does not allocate any delegates from the primary, but rather holds its own caucus on March 26. As a result, Democrats may vote in the primary on May 24 but the vote is considered a “beauty contest” as it holds no bearing on delegates.

SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS International Fellowship Inc. (IFI), one of the oldest student exchange programs in the nation, headquartered in Westfield, NY is seeking families to host their foreign exchange students. These high school age students are planning to arrive in August for the academic school year. IFI invites families in all states to share their lives, homes and communities with a student. A host "family" can be married or single parent, young parent to grandparents. Families do not have to have children of their own living at home. The responsibilities of a host "family" are to provide the student with three meals a day (cafeteria lunch is the student's responsibility), a bed, a place to study, laundry facilities and parental guidance. All students come with their own spending money for personal items, school supplies and any "extras" they

choose to do with friends. International Fellowship, founded in 1952, has linked more than 25 ,000 exchange students with host families. A host family is asked to provide room and board along with a loving and supportive environment while the student attends the local high school. The host family would play an active role in presenting American culture and making lasting memories that the student will take back to their family, community and country. All students have their own spending money, transportation and health insurance as well as an eagerness to explore this new world of adventure. The student is monitored throughout their stay in the United States by IFI Local Representatives. The representative is the liaison with the schools, students, host families, and IFI staff. Someone from the IFI office is also available to host

families and students 24 hours a day, seven days a week by simply calling the 800 number. IFI's philosophy is, "Through Knowledge and Friendship Come Un d e r s t a n d i n g a n d Goodwill." Exchange students add an international dimension to host families, schools and communities. All grow in knowledge, understanding and acceptance of cultures very different from their own. Lifelong international friendships often result from being a part of the exchange student experience. These students help to support local economies and, in a most hopeful way, help to encourage world peace and understanding. View the IFI website at www.internationalfellowship.org. Please contact them toll-free at 1-800-647-8839 or 716-326-7277; fax them at 716-326-7279 or e-mail them at infelwes@gmail.com.

ACE HARDWARE RIBBON CUTTING LOCATED INSIDE BOROWIAK'S IGA – MT. VERNON

Cooking With Lizzie

Summer's Bounty: Yellow Squash And Tomatoes Summer is just around the corner and with it comes a bounty of fresh veggies. I've never grown yellow crookneck summer squash. This year I'm trying it, along with spaghetti squash, okra, tomatoes, pepper, green beans, and of course, my herb garden. So I've already started gathering all kinds of yellow crookneck squash recipes that I'm anxious to try. See the squash recipe below, along with some of my favorite tomato recipes.

Simple Stuffed Squash 6 medium-size yellow squash 6 slices bacon 1 medium onion, chopped 1 T. minced green bell pepper 1/2 cup chicken broth

1 cup fine dry bread crumbs 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/4 cup unsalted butter or margarine, melted Parmesan cheese

Wash squash thoroughly. Place squash in boiling water to cover; simmer 10 to 15 minutes, or until tender but still firm. Drain and cool slightly. Trim off stems. Cut squash in half lengthwise; remove and reserve pulp, leaving a firm shell. Set aside. Fry bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon, reserving 2 T. drippings in skillet. Crumble bacon and set aside. Saute onion and green pepper in drippings until tender. Combine onion and green pepper with broth, bacon, bread crumbs, salt, pepper and squash pulp; mix well. Place squash shells in lightly greased 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Spoon pulp mixture into shells; drizzle with butter and sprinkle with cheese. Broil about 3 minutes, or until lightly browned. Yield: 6 servings.

Motherʼs Day Sunday, May 8th

THE 411 ON MOTHER'S DAY FLOWERS

Mother’s Day is an annual holiday that honors motherhood and provides an opportunity for men, women and children to show their mothers how much they appreciate them. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in

1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day, when moms take the day off from chores and

relax with their families. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and well-wishers who want to give the special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties. Carnations Carnations are popular Mother’s Day flowers, perhaps because they are available in a number of colors. That means it’s highly likely sons, daughters, husbands and others gifting moms this Mother’s Day can find some carnations in Mom’s favorite color. Ask your florist about what each carnation color symbolizes, as each has its own unique meaning. Pink carnations, for example, are believed to symbolize a mother’s love. Roses Few mothers can resist roses, making them one of the more popular flowers come Mother’s Day. Roses are symbolic of love and make the perfect floral gift for mothers who like traditional flowers. If you

If I Knew As A Child—A Mother's Day Poem If I knew as a child what I know now, Mom, I probably wouldn't have made things so hard for you. I would have understood that you were looking out for my best interest. Even though it may not have seemed so at the time. I would have known how difficult it is to let go, to stand back and let someone you love learn from their mistakes. I would have realize how fortunate I was to have a mother who was always there for me, even after an argument, even after I'd said things I shouldn't have. While it's too late for a lot of things it's not too late for me to tell you that I appreciate how loving you are, how giving you've always been and that even though I may not always be good at showing it, I love you very much. —by Renee Duvall

want to spice things up, order a bouquet made up of roses of various colors. Daffodils Yellow is synonymous with spring, and daffodils can highlight the season in which Mother’s Day takes place while also providing a cheerful look that’s perfect for Mother’s Day

floral bouquets. Daffodils can be given on their own or added to mixed bouquets. Daffodils also last quite a while when cared for correctly, giving moms more than just a few days to enjoy their bouquets. Freesia Like daffodils, freesia are long-lasting, meaning mothers will still be enjoy-

ing them long after Mother’s Day has come and gone. The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Freesia also come in many colors, proving Mother’s Day gift givers a greater chance of finding flowers their mothers will love.

TIPS FOR CELEBRATING MOTHER'S DAY ON A BUDGET With Mother’s Day around the corner, you may be thinking of ways to show your appreciation for mom. If you’re on a budget, you’re in luck. Here's some helpful advice • Breakfast in Bed: Every mom deserves some time to relax. Why not begin Mother’s Day by pampering her with breakfast in bed? Don’t forget to make the meal complete with a card and a cup of coffee. • Watch it Grow: Spend Mother’s Day afternoon making memories with Mom and see your love grow all spring and summer. Pick out a beautiful new planter with gardening tools, soil and seeds. Work together to plant something beautiful. As the plants grow, she will be reminded of you! • Bake and Make: Update and brighten Mom’s kitchen without over-spending. At a discount retailer such as Dollar General, colorful new oven mitts and kitchen towels are available for $1 dollar each. Look for her favorite colors or the ones that best complement her kitchen. Give Mom an opportunity to use her new gifts by packaging them together with an easy cupcake or brownie mix and kitchen utensils. Baking together is

a great way to spend quality time while providing yummy treats to celebrate the big day! • Tell the Birds: Get Mom a themed birdhouse with bird seeds, or consider making a birdhouse together as an afternoon arts and crafts project. Either way, you can help her find the best

place in the yard to enjoy the colorful and beautiful birds that will soon be frequent visitors. They’ll be singing all season! This Mother’s Day, show Mom how much you care and make memories you can cherish for years to come. (StatePoint)

Wonderful Mother God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old; He made her smile of the sunshine, And He moulded her heart of pure gold; In her eyes He placed bright shining stars, In her cheeks fair roses you see; God made a wonderful mother, And He gave that dear mother to me. by Pat O'Reilly

THE SECRET TO MOTHER'S DAY GIFTING SUCCESS: GIVE TIME, NOT STUFF children who live and work far from their childhood home (and Mom) or a busy family with young children, it can be hard to find time to spend with each other on a regular basis. On Mother's Day, make a point of devoting the day to Mom. Whatever you choose to do together - dine out, visit a botanical garden or just hang out at home - you'll be giving her the gift she wants most: time with you. Don't give: "Stuff." There's a difference between a thoughtful gift that has meaning to the recipient, and something clearly bought out of desperation just so the giver has something to hand over on Mother's Day. Moms know the differ-

ence. Don't wait until the last minute to buy something she may not want. Put some thought into the gift a week or two before the big day so you can be sure you're giving her something she really wants, like a piece of unique jewelry, her favorite bath products, or an

attractive scarf. Give: A great meal out. It's easy to understand why dining out was on the list of most-wanted gifts for mothers in every geographic area surveyed. What could make Mom happier than enjoying a great meal with her family? Not having to

was another popular selection of moms surveyed. But don't think giving her a gift card is all you have to do. Research to find just the right card for her, and then offer to accompany her on a shopping excursion to her favorite store. That way, you'll be giving her two things she wants most - a gift card and time spent with you. Don't give: Technology. Do you really want to give Mom a smartphone that will be obsolete by next Mother's Day? Or a tablet so complicated she'll never figure out how to use it on her own? If your mother's digitally inclined, chances are she already has the tech she needs and wants. And if she doesn't, trying to choose it for her can be like trying to pick a pet for someone else - never a good idea. Instead, keep gift items simple, personal and nostalgic.

She nursed you through countless cases of childhood sniffles, taught you to tie your shoes and make a mean omelet, and she's still your go-to source for good advice and your favorite home-baked cookies. Are you really going to just give Mom a pair of socks and some flowers for Mother's Day? You can do better than that. In the tradition of a current pop-culture meme, here's a "give this, not that" list of Mother's Day ideas: Give: Your time. Last year, 44 percent of mothers surveyed by online deal site PriceGrabber said they wanted quality time with their family for Mother's Day. Whether your family includes adult

cook it herself or clean up afterward! Taking Mom out for a meal is a timehonored Mother's Day tradition and restaurants can be busy on the first Sunday of May. Don't give: Practical kitchen items. No matter how much Mom says she wants a new electric can opener or how much she needs a new set of pots and pans, don't give these items on Mother's Day. Moms are more than just the sum of the time they spend in the kitchen. If she really needs and wants those things, why not give them to her at some other time of year, for no other reason than she's a great mother? Or, if you must give something kitchenrelated for Mother's Day, consider something that's pretty and fun, too, like decorative serve ware. Give: Gift cards. A gift card to her favorite store

The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called “Mothering Sunday.” Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, “Mothering Sunday” honored the mothers of England. During this time many of England’s poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the “Mother Church” - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration. People began honoring their mothers as well as the church. In the United States Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn

of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother’s Day meetings in Boston, Mass every year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the second Sunday of May. By the next year Mother’s Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother’s Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

TIPS FOR DINING OUT ON MOTHER'S DAY Mother's Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother's Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family. A vast number of families travel to their favorite re st au r ant s for Mother's Day meals. Mother's Day is one of the busiest holidays of the year for restaurants.

The National Retail Federation says 54.8 percent of Americans treat their mothers to a special meal out on Mother's Day. Billions of dollars are generated by people eating out with their mothers. With large crowds to be expected, diners can follow a few tips when treating Mom to a meal. • Book early ... very early. To guarantee a reservation at any restaurant, namely your favorite restaurant, you will need to make a reservation well in advance of Mother's Day. It's never too early to put your name on the reservation list. Don't forget Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11, 2014.

• Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you're bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don't arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained. • Consider dining out a day before or after. Restaurants are generally packed on Mother's Day,

and as a result kitchen and wait staffs might be overtaxed. What's more, diners might be relegated to a special or abbreviated menu. If you want a more relaxed setting and the ability to order whatever you desire, it may be a better idea to celebrate Mother's Day in advance. Then have Mom enjoy a relaxing day at home on her special day. • Take-out is an option. Families can treat Mom to a dinner out, without really having to go out. Many restaurants offer takeout service, so you

will not be limited to pizza or Chinese. Even chain restaurants have curbside service, so if Mom is in the mood for a burger or something more elaborate, she'll have that option. • Expect an included gratuity. Restaurants often include a gratuity in the bill when servicing larger parties, such as those that might be celebrating Mother's Day. The standard gratuity rate is 18 percent, but you may want to go above and beyond if you feel the service is exemplary.

• Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother's Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom's comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.

A Mother’s Day Poem A Mother’s Love There is no love, like a mother’s love, no stronger bond on earth... like the precious bond that comes from God, to a mother, when she gives birth. A mother’s love is forever strong, never changing for all time... and when her children need her most, a mother’s love will shine. God bless these special mothers, God bless them every one... for all the tears and heartache, and for the special work they’ve done. When her days on earth are over, a mother’s love lives on... through many generations, with God’s blessings on each one. Be thankful for our mothers, for they love with a higher love... from the power God has given, and the strength from up above. by Jill Lemming

Special Section NATURAL WAYS TO BEAT SEASONAL ALLERGIES The arrival of warmer weather changes the landscape completely. Animals come out of hiding and hibernation while trees and flowers bloom anew. The spring season can be an exciting time for naturalists and lovers of the great outdoors because they can immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of nature. But for many people, spring also marks the start of allergy season and spending time outdoors can become downright uncomfortable for them. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology says nasal allergies affect approximately 50 million people in the United States. Allergic diseases, including asthma, are the fifth most prevalent chronic diseases among people of all ages and the third most common in children. Allergic rhinitis, or hay

fever, can occur in spring, summer and/or early fall. People who experience hay fever often can attribute their symptoms to sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses, weeds, or airborne mold spores. No two allergy sufferers are alike, so medications that may work for one person may be only mildly effective for another. Many medications can cause side effects, which may be just as frustrating as the initial allergy symptoms. Treatments may target sneezing and itching but fail to clear up congestion. Drowsiness, dry mouth and nasal irritation may be side effects of common allergy drugs. People who want to avoid allergy medication can look to natural remedies to alleviate their symptoms. Whether used alone or in concert with traditional medicine, these remedies may make

spending time outdoors more pleasant. • Try probiotics. Probiotics, those friendly bacteria that reside in the digestive system, can do more than just treat an upset stomach. Naturopathic doctors say that probiotics also can influence the immune system and may help strengthen its response to common allergens. Since probiotics are good for replenishing healthy bacteria in the body anyway, many people may want to keep taking them once their allergy symptoms have come and gone. • Use neti pots or saline sprays. A small amount of saltwater can rinse away allergens, such as pollen, that get lodged in the nose. These rinses also can help clear up congestion and flush out any other irritants. • Load up on omega-3s. A German study pub-

lished in the journal Allergy found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didn’t regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s can help fight inflammation. Drinking more fluids and using spices in cooking can help flush out allergens as well. • Don’t forget vitamin C. Vitamin C is an immune-system booster and may help prevent the formation of histamine in the body, a substance responsible for many allergy symptoms.

YEARLY EYE EXAMS CAN REVEAL ADDRESSING COMMON CONCERNS MORE THAN JUST VISION ABOUT EXERCISE AFTER 50 TROUBLE Exercise is an essential maximum resistance. When could lead to serious More evidence points to the importance of routine eye exams, not only to pinpoint potential conditions of the eye, but also to serve as windows to diseases that affect the entire body. Now more than ever it is essential to make and keep annual eye exams, as they can help to reveal the first signs of serious ailments. Doctors from around the world say dozens of diseases — from certain cancers to arthritis to high blood pressure — can show symptoms in the eye. Under the watchful and knowing gaze of an eyecare professional, individuals can get early diagnosis and begin treatment promptly. According to Dr. Roy Chuck, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center,

there are many systemic diseases that can be seen in the eye. In addition to the conditions mentioned, jaundice can indicate liver disease while retinal detachment and bleeding in new blood vessels may indicate hypertension. By looking at the color of the cornea, some doctors can tell if a patient has elevated levels of cholesterol. Many people have had their eye doctors be the first healthcare professional to detect the presence of their diabetes.

If an ophthalmologist suspects an underlying medical condition, he or she will likely refer men and women to their primary care doctors for a more thorough examination. Going to the eye doctor can do more than ensure your vision is sharp. It’s a life-saving decision for many people who have major health conditions diagnosed through the eyes.

element of a healthy lifestyle. Including exercise in your daily routine can lower your risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and exercise can even sharpen mental acuity, reduce anxiety and improve mood. But as beneficial as exercise can be, many men and women, particularly men and women over the age of 50, who have not laced up their sneakers in years are hesitant to begin an exercise regimen for a variety of reasons, potentially putting their long-term health at risk. Regardless of a person's age, beginning a new exercise regimen can be intimidating. But it's especially so for men and women over the age of 50, who might not know where to begin or how to approach adopting a healthier lifestyle. According to the National Institute on Aging, the following are a few points men and women should know as they attempt to improve their physical fitness with a more active lifestyle. • Exercise is safe even if you have not been physically active in a long time. Many older men and women worry that suddenly embracing physical fitness after years of inactivity may be detrimental to their health. But that's only true if men and women don't exercise caution at the outset of their routines. When beginning the routine, take things very slowly at first, choosing to walk or bike every day rather than hitting the treadmill and adjusting it to

strength training, start off with very little weight so your muscles can grow acclimated to the motions and you can get the exercises down pat. As you grow more comfortable and your body starts to feel more up to the challenges of daily exercise, you can begin to gradually alter your cardiovascular and strength training workouts to make them more challenging. • Exercise can make existing medical conditions more manageable. Men and women over the age of 50 who have preexisting medical conditions are likely to find that exercise alleviates rather than exacerbates their physical problems. The NIA notes that studies have shown that regular exercise and physical activity can benefit people with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. But it's still recommended that men and women with preexisting medical conditions consult with their physicians before making any lifestyle changes. Some conditions may affect a person's ability to be active, and it's best to get the go-ahead from a physician before beginning an exercise regimen. Doctors may even suggest certain activities that have been known to alleviate particular conditions. • Exercise reduces fatigue, so sitting around to preserve strength is not effective. Exercise improves strength and energy levels, so sitting on the sideline to preserve your strength is counterproductive and

medical problems. The "Report on Physical Activity and Health" from the U.S. Surgeon General's office noted that men and women who are inactive are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who are more active. While getting adequate rest and giving your body ample time recover from physical activity is essential, your body won't benefit by avoiding exercise to preserve your strength. However, even moderate physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce fatigue. • No one is too old to exercise. It's not uncommon for men and women in their golden years to think they are too old to exercise. Some may feel that their toned down workouts cannot possibly be making much of an impact thanks to the physical limitations old age has put on their bodies, while others may think it's unwise for someone in their 70s or 80s to be physically active. But no one is too old to exercise, as exercise helps the body stay strong and fit even when you can no longer max out on the bench press or squat hundreds of pounds. Scaling back your exercise routine will be necessary as you get older, but that does not mean you cannot still enjoy and benefit from physical activity. Continuing to exercise as you age is a great way to improve your quality of life and stay as active as possible well into your golden years.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL FOCUS The technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the Internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive. • Get more exercise. Studies have shown that exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19

studies involving more than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of exercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporati ng s ome e xe rc is e, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous workout, into their midday routines. • Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oft-overlooked cause of loss of focus. When

ner vous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concentrate. Professional athletes have long espoused to the virtues of breathing exercises as a means to calming their nerves, and professionals can follow suit. Some simple breathing exercises can help busy professionals multitask more effectively by helping them concentrate on the tasks at hand and overcome the distraction of having so much to do at one time. • Stay hydrated. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition

GET THE FACTS ON OCULAR MIGRAINES While many people are familiar with the term “migraine headache,” few may have experienced an ocular migraine. Ocular migraines, sometimes referred to as “eye migraines,” are often harmless and may disappear rather quickly. The organization All About Vision defines ocular migraines as painless, temporary visual disturbances that usually affect one eye. Ocular migraines can be disturbing because of their symptoms. People experiencing ocular migraines may experience scintillations, or bright flashing lights or flickering. Wavy lines surrounding an enlarging blind spot (scotoma) also can occur. Blind spots may start small but quickly grow bigger and move across one’s field of vision. Sometimes an ocular migraine is accompanied by a migraine headache and certain symptoms, such as light sensitivity and nausea, that are associated with migraine headaches. The National Institutes of Health notes that, if an ocular migraine is accompanied by

17

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

a headache, the pain from the migraine is often located on the same side of the head as the eye that is experiencing the ocular migraine. Migraines in general are not well understood, and the same can be said for ocular migraines. The causes ocular migraines is not exactly known, but it is thought to be related to constricted blood vessels in the eye, possibly in the retina. The Mayo Clinic says that while visual sensations associated with ocular migraines can induce anxiety and interfere with certain activities, the condition usually is not considered serious and can ease up within 20 to 30 minutes. Some people do not even realize their symptoms may be migraine-related because of the lack of associated headache. Several more serious conditions can cause similar symptoms to the relatively benign ocular migraine. Men and women who frequently experience visual disturbances should consult with an expert who can rule out other ailments. Everything from an em-

bolism to tumors of the eye to optic neuropathy may produce symptoms similar to ocular migraines. If an ocular migraine is a one-time occurrence, sufferers need not worry. However, any vision problems should be investigated fully to determine if any underlying conditions are present and to safeguard against any long-term vision loss.

found that dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue among women. While the loss of focus was considered insubstantial and the study only examined women, remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day. • Get adequate sleep. One of the best ways to improve focus during the day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of negative consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Research has shown that sleep deprivation compromises alertness and concentration, making it more difficult to focus at work and tackle tasks that

require deep analysis and thought. In addition, a survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep-deprived men and women are less likely to exercise and eat healthy diets, each of which can boost mental acuity.

Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Peace in the Storm Storm clouds are on the horizon. How can we face the storms of life that assail each and every one of us? The disciples of Jesus were in the middle of a storm of epic proportions. Where was Jesus? He was asleep on a pillow in the stern of the boat. What did the disciples do? What can we learn to enable us to face the storms of life? Apply these powerful lessons from Mark 4:35-41. GOD IS ALWAYS UP TO SOMETHING. “On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side.’” (Mark 4:35) Jesus said, “My Father has been working until now a n d I h av e b e e n working.” (John 5:17) To have God working in and through your life, you must be willing to cross to the other side of the lake with Jesus. This requires risk. Plant that mustard seed of faith and step out. I read a recent Facebook post, “When God is doing some rearranging in your life, don’t fight it. Yield to the Lord and let Him work. The result will be beautiful.” TAKE JESUS AS HE

IS. “Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.” (Mark 4:36) In obedience to their Lord the disciples took Jesus in their boat and began to row to the other side of the lake. This is the principle of immediate obedience. In facing life’s storms, lives are at stake. They took Jesus as He was. You can’t change God; so don’t try. Jesus doesn’t need to change; we need to change. When the Lord speaks, immediately obey. King Saul lost out with God because he refused to obey. God’s message was clear, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” (I Samuel 15:22) YOUR ACTIONS IN THE STORM WILL AFFECT OTHERS. “And other little boats were also with Him.” (Mark 4:36) Your actions will affect others either positively or negatively. Paul could say, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” (I Corinthians 11:1) Can we say that?

THE STORMS OF LIFE COME TO ALL. “And a great windstorm arose and beat into the boat.” (Mark 4:37) Even Jesus faced the storms of life while on earth. He is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” (Hebrews 4:15) Difficulties in life do not necessarily mean one is out of the will of God. The disciples were right in the center of God’s will. Storms in life come to all, don’t abandon ship. Pursue His purposes. (Romans 8:28) FIND YOUR REST IN GOD. Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern of the boat. He had perfect trust in His Father’s care. In the middle of life’s storms, you can rest secure in His promises and presence. (John 14:1; Philippians 4:6-7) JESUS DOES CARE FOR YOU. The disciples woke Jesus up and asked him, “Don’t you care we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38) In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus pointed to the birds of the air and said, “Your Father takes care of them and you are more valuable to Him than they.” (Matthew 6:25-34) Franklin Graham said, “No matter what storm you face, you need to

know that God loves you. He has not abandoned you.” Don’t question God’s love – He cares for you. JESUS IS MASTER OF THE WINDS AND THE WAVES. “Then He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:39) Jesus is the Master of the winds and waves that assail you. Go to Him in faith and He will speak peace to your soul and calm the raging sea. But Jesus asked a piercing question. “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (Mark 4:40) Sow that mustard seed of faith to the One who walks on water, stills the raging storm, and arose victorious from the dead. When we face the storms of life with the Master of the winds and waves, like the disciples, we will be in awe of His majesty and power. “Who can this be?” (Mark 4:41) Only the Christ, the Son of the Living God! Confess Him as your Lord. (Romans 10:9) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • A p r ov e r b o f unknown origin states, "The length of a piece of wood can only be too short on one end." • Scotsmen and their descendants make up almost half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and almost three-quarters of American presidents. • An adult human has 60,000 miles of blood vessels.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Temper your typical Aries urge to charge into a situation and demand answers. Instead, let the Lamb’s gentler self emerge to deal with a problem that requires delicacy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You are aware of what’s going on, so continue to stand by your earlier decision, no matter how persuasive the counter-arguments might be. Money pressures will soon ease. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) By all means, have fun and enjoy your newly expanded social life. But don’t forget that some people are depending on you to keep promises that are very important to them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You need to wait patiently for an answer to a workplace problem and not push for a decision. Remember: Time is on your side. A financial matter needs closer attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You now have information that can influence that decision you planned to make. But the clever Cat will consult a trusted friend or family member before making a major move. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: You’re finding that more doors are opening for you to show what you can do, and you don’t even have to knock very hard to get the attention you’re seeking. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your gift for creating order out of chaos will help you deal with a sudden rush of responsibilities

that would threaten someone less able to balance his or her priorities. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. Your energy levels are coming right back up to normal -- just in time to help you tackle some worthwhile challenges and make some important choices. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The sage Sagittarian should demand a full explanation of inconsistencies that might be cropping up in what had seemed to be a straightforward deal. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A conflict between obligations to family and to the job can create stressful problems. Best advice: Balance your dual priorities so that one doesn’t outweigh the other. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t guess, speculate or gossip about that so-called mystery situation at the workplace. Bide your time. An explanation will be forthcoming very soon. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Boredom might be creeping in and causing you to lose interest in a repeat project. Deal with it by flipping over your usual routine and finding a new way to do an old task. BORN THIS WEEK: You can warm the coldest heart with your lyrical voice and bright smile.
