Obama held a press conference last Sunday addressing the mass shooting in Florida that left 50 dead (49 victims and the shooter) and another 53 wounded and fighting for their lives. At this point, this terrorist shooting was the worst in modern U.S. history. It leaves me wondering when did this kind of craziness start, but more important, where does it stop? On this latest tragedy, the shooter made a call to 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS. We also know that in the past he had been investigated by the FBI; he was a private security guard and was assigned to a number of federal buildings. He was a sympathizer with radical Islam and inspired by ISIS. Fitting in with the ISIS ideology against gays, along with many other communities, this tragedy was carried out at Pulse, a well known gay night club in Orlando, Florida. He clearly wanted the world to know this was an ISIS inspired attack. Keep in mind Ramadan

started a few days ago, and some Islamic extremists have said that to kill Americans during this Muslim time of atonement will gain ten times more glory in heaven by "killing the infidel." During the press conference, as Obama addressed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, he said, "While still learning all the facts, this was an act of terrorism by an individual filled with hate." He also said the federal government would help Orlando in any way they could. Obama pointed out any attack on Americans is an attack on all Americans. Obama's entire press conference lasted less than five minutes and he answered no questions. I believe this was the first time I have heard him use the words terrorist attack in any press conference after the fact. However, he never used the words Islamic or ISIS. What is clear is this shooter was born in the
U.S., raised by parents from Afghanistan and was a Muslim. ISIS did come out and say the shooter was an ISIS fighter! So they are taking credit for yet another barbaric act. I said earlier, "When does this stop?" In my opinion, it has to start with stronger leadership than we've had over the last eight years. In closing, let me say the name of the shooter was not used in this column; that was done in honor of those that lost their lives and those that are now fighting for their lives. No ISIS terrorist deserves to have his or her name in the press. O ur t houg hts and prayers are with all the victims and their families.

Favorite Southern Salads A nice salad can be the most delicious way to start a meal. But if you're like me, I can make a meal out of a refreshing salad and enjoy every bite! Mama says it comes from my grandfather and my southern background, because down south salad means so much more than a side plate piled high with lettuce and cucumbers. Southern salads stand on their own. Below are some of my family's favorites.
Fried Chicken Salad Buttermilk Dressing: 1/3 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper 3 T. chopped fresh chives
Fried Chicken: 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup self-rising flour
Black pepper Vegetable oil, for deep-frying Salt
Salad: 12 cups mixed greens 2 plum tomatoes, chopped
1/2 small Vidalia onion, thinly sliced
To make dressing: In small bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, lemon juice, salt and black pepper. Whisk in chives. To make chicken: Cut chicken into l-inch strips. In wide, shallow bowl, whisk eggs with 1/4 cup water. In separate wide, shallow bowl, whisk together flour and 1/2 tsp. black pepper. In large saucepan, heat 3 inches oil to 350°F. Coat chicken with eggs and let excess drip back into bowl. Dip chicken in flour and shake off excess. Add chicken to hot oil and cook until golden and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Then set on paper towel-lined plate to drain. Season chicken with salt and black pepper to taste. To make salad: Toss together greens, tomatoes, onion, and two-thirds of the dressing in large bowl. Divide greens among 4 to 6 serving plates, depending on how many people you want to feed. Top greens with fried chicken and drizzle with remaining dressing. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

Can Renter be Forced to Give Up His Pet? DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I’m in a dilemma. I’ve had my dog for about five years. “Shera” stays with me in my apartment, one of six in a triple-decker house, and there have been no problems until now. Now, a new owner has bought the house and told me I cannot have a pet: I must either get rid of Shera or move out. What can I do? — Desperate in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR DESPERATE: I feel for you, and I hope I can give you some useful advice in this limited space. My first tip is to act fast, and the sooner the better. I recommend immediately contacting
your state’s legal services or aid resource, if there is one, to discuss the problem. You also could find free or low-cost legal advice through the state’s bar association or perhaps at a local university. Your local library can be a great resource, too — you can get online for free, and the librarians can be very helpful. Renters have fairly extensive rights in most states. A new landlord usually cannot simply walk in and demand you get rid of your pet. The existing lease typically cannot be changed suddenly, either. And even if you don’t have a signed lease (some apartments are still “handshake” agreements) the landlord typically must still give reasonable notice of a change in the terms. You also might try offering your landlord a non-refundable pet deposit. These are sometimes required in rentals that accept pets.
There’s much more information out there than I have room to write about here. But basically, you have more rights
than you think. Stay calm, but immediately start contacting organizations that can help. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Mexico A: You are fortunate that you live in a larger city that has dozens of excellent antique and collectible dealers. This is where you should start. I always recommend to my readers that they buy and sell locally when possible. If that idea doesn't work or appeal to you, there is eBay. *** Q: In 1938, I bought a Packard Bell tabletop radio. It is Model 46D in a wooden case. I love the radio, and it still plays. — Steve, Jackson, Mississippi A: Most radios of this type retail for about $100. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

Q: My dad gave me a Hopalong Cassidy black and white penknife. Dad is now 85 years old and thinks he originally received it when he was about 10 or 12 years old. Does it have any value? — Matthew, Bloomingdale, Illinois A: There were several Hopalong Cassidy knives issued, and I am not certain which one you have. According to "Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles" by Joe Caro, the black single-blade knife would sell in the $150-$225 range if in excellent condition. *** Q: I have been searching for several years for a catalog about Shirley Temple dolls. I have even contacted the Bradford Exchange where some of my dolls were purchased. I did not get any help. I have several dolls from the 1980s and '90s that I want to find values. — Evelyn, Coventry, Rhode Island
A: I find it interesting that the Bradford Exchange would not help you since some of your dolls were purchased there. There are at least a dozen excellent price guides for Shirley Temple items. Two I especially recommend are "Shirley Temple Dolls and Price Guide" by Suzanne Kraus-Mancuso (Holly House Books) and "The Complete Guide to Shirley Temple Dolls and Collectibles" by Tonya BervaldiCamaratta (Collector Books). Both are available at www.amazon.com. *** Q: I have crystal, glassware and vases from the 1940s, some earlier. I also have some embroidered handkerchiefs that were my grandmothers, a blue-flowered vegetable bowl and necklaces from the 1890s. Other items include stoneware, a teapot and goldrimmed fruit bowls dating back 150 years. Where can I sell these items? — Virginia, Albuquerque, New

EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
The Church of the Open Door The church of Philadelphia was only one of two churches of Asia that Jesus did not give a word of condemnation. In fact, He gave them a wonderful promise. “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens. ‘I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door.’” (Revelation 3:7-8) What a blessing! Have you ever had a door close to you? I think most of us have at one time or another. It can be disappointing, but if you love God, He promises to “work all things together for your good.” (Romans 8:28) What would you do if God set before you “an open door”? I hope you would take advantage of the great opportunity. How can we come to the place where, like the church of Philadelphia, God sets before us an “open door and no one can shut it”? THE POWER OF BROTHERLY LOVE. This church was situated

in the city of ancient Philadelphia. The name means “brotherly love”. The inhabitants were often victims of earthquake and the eruption of an active volcano. We are admonished, “Let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to entertain strangers . . . Remember the prisoners.” (Hebrews 13:1-3; II Peter 1:7-8) God opens doors to those who display “brotherly love”. Perhaps the best church sign I’ve ever seen was displayed at Cornerstone Church in Marion IL. I’ll share an abbreviated form, “Cornerstone Church welcomes those who are single, married, divorced, engaged, gay or straight. We welcome the filthy rich, dirt poor, or no habla ingles. We also welcome those who are crying newborns, old as dirt, skinny as a rail, or could afford to lose a few pounds. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR
dads, . . . nose pickers, veterans, vegetarians, . . . If you blew all your offering money at the casino, you are welcome here. If you are inked, pierced, or both, you are in the right place. If you are in recovery or still addicted, we are happy to see you. “We welcome you because we have experienced the thrill of being welcomed by God. We were once a mess, but God willingly welcomed us through the crossstretched arms of Jesus. He gave His life so we could experience real life and be part of His forever family. God is delighted to see you here. We are too!” That’s a church of the open door! THE POWER OF THE KEY OF DAVID. “He who has the key of David.” (Revelation 3:7) Jesus Christ is the son of David. The key of David speaks of the authority believers have in the name of Jesus. The power of prayer in Jesus name opens doors that no one can shut. (John 14:13-14; 15-16; 16:23-26) The church of Philadelphia was commended by Jesus, “You . . . have kept my Word and have not denied my name.” (Rev-
elation 3:8) They suffered much persecution and many were martyred. They were thus a small church but a mighty church. Be faithful to the name of Jesus. THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE. Because this church persevered under severe trials, God promised them many blessings. (Revelation 3:9-11) The seal of the city of God and the Lord’s new name would be upon their heads. (Revelation 3:12) An open door that no one could shut would be set before them. Near our home there is a youth camp called the Pinnacles. Carved out of the rock by wind and water over thousands of years are breathtaking spires, pinnacles, cliffs and caves. The word perseverance comes to me. Recently a post on Facebook read, “Patience is not just enduring testing and trials. It’s your attitude in the midst of them.” Persevere in faith and watch God open a door that no one can shut. by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved English author and humorist P.G. Wodehouse, probably best known for his tales of Wooster and Jeeves, who made the following observation: "Judges, as a class, display, in the matter of arranging [divorce settlements] that reckless generosity which is found only in men who are giving away someone else's money." • Brides in ancient Rome carried sheaves of
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A heads-up alert to all free-spirited Ewes and Rams: Be wary of a deal that could result in compromising your independence. Check every detail before making a commitment. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) New facts emerge that help put an irksome workplace situation in perspective. Meanwhile, pay more attention to a family member who needs your wisdom and strength. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A slight setback in plans is nothing to worry about. Use this delay to deal with a number of matters you might have ignored for too long. Expect news from someone in your past. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re entering a period of stability. Use it to straighten out any outstanding problems related to a very personal situation. Also, pay closer attention to financial matters. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you love being a social Lion, you might well benefit from staying out of the spotlight for a while. You need time to reflect on some upcoming decisions. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A difficult family situation improves, thanks to your timely intervention. You can now start to focus more of your attention on preparing for a possible career change. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An on-the-job change works to your benefit by offering new op-
portunities. It’s up to you to check them out. Meanwhile, a stalled romantic situation starts up again. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That flare-up of Scorpian temperament cools down, leaving you more receptive to suggestions about changes that might need to be made in your personal life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unusual period of indecisiveness is a mite frustrating. But things soon clear up, allowing the sage Sagittarian to make those wise pronouncements again. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might feel that you know best, but it’s not a good idea at this time to try to force your opinions on others. Best advice: Inspire change by example, not by intimidation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some setbacks could affect your plans to fortify your financial situation. But things start moving again by early next week. Meanwhile, enjoy your resurgent social life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that often-hidden steely spine of yours as you once again stand up to an emotional bully. You’ve got the strength to do it, especially as friends rally to your side. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ruling planet, Mercury, endows you with a gift for writing.
