CENTRAL CITY LIONS PROGRAM TO COMBAT DEAFNESS Hearing impairment and deafness have no respect of age, wealth, or rank – they strike people of all economic, social, and age categories with equal frequency. To help protect the hearing of the public through an early alert system, to increase public awareness not only of the problems of the deaf, but also the capabilities of the hearing impaired. As part of a program offered by the Lions of Illinois Foundation, the Central City Lions Club is sponsoring a free hearing screening for persons age 10 and older. The screening will take place on Thursday, June 30 from 9am until 1pm at the Central City Lions Shelter in Lions Park (located at Prairie St. & Morrison St. in Central City). No appointment is necessary. Hearing loss is one of the most chronic disabilities in the United States and

occurs nearly four times as often as blindness. There are approximately 750,000 hearing-impaired persons in Illinois alone. Of those over 100,000 are deaf with 26,000 who were deaf before the age of 19. Unfortunately, the problem is made worse since the deaf are least understood of all handicapped populations. “For far too long,” said Central City Lions Club President Mike Young, “deafness and stupidity were associated together even though the hearingimpaired population are just as intelligent as the hearing population and are just as qualified for job opportunities.” “Those with hearing impairment and hearing loss deserve every opportunity and every consideration,” said Lion Zach Roeckeman, who is chairing the event for the Central City Lions. He noted hearing takes many forms and some may

feel like the sound in their life has been turned down or others may have trouble hearing or understanding various pitches and sounds. “Hearing protection is critical and this screening only takes a few minutes. Plus, if there’s an issue, persons are given referrals for follow-up treatment,” said Roeckeman. “The Central City Lions really hope that people in our community take advantage of this opportunity.” The Mobile Hearing Screening Unit is conducted through cooperation of the Lions of Illinois Foundation, which is the charitable arm of Illinois’ more than 700 Lions Clubs and is funded through charitable giving and the Lions’ event, Candy Day. For more information, contact the Central City Lions Club through their Facebook page or call Lion Zach Roeckeman at 618204-9710 or by e-mail at centralia8@hotmail.com.

24TH ANNUAL DUCK RACE AT CARLYLE The 24th Annual Duck Race will take place at Carlyle Lake Dam on Saturday, July, 9, 2016. This is the Healthcare Foundation's largest fund raiser. All proceeds go toward helping local families with medical expenses. The children's area and food stand will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ducks will be released into the lake at noon. The first 12 ducks to cross the finish line will be pulled and selected in order

for the top prizes. Grand prize this year is $1,000 cash and there will be a chance to win $50,000. There are many other great prizes as well! Ducks can be purchased online at www.duckrace.com/carlyle or at most local banks. This is the first year for Executive Director Megan Marcum. race allow us to continue to help and serve families with needs in our communities." Anyone interested in getting involved can email Megan at healthcarefoundation@yahoo.com. The Healthcare Foundation is a not-forprofit organization that assists families with different medical needs in the counties of Clinton, Jefferson, Marion and Washington.

Supervisor of Assessments Patty Brough announced today that improvements have been made to her office’s website which contains information on Marion County properties. Brough stated that site addresses have now been added to the geographic information system website which can be accessed at: marionil.mygisonline.com. Marion County residents will now be able to view parcel numbers as well as the parcel’s physical address when accessing the site. Brough stated that this information is beneficial to all residents, as well as local realtors and individuals interested in buying and selling property and homes. The website shows all property within the county and also has a searchable database for finding additional details. Everything on the website is considered public information by statute and has such data as parcel numbers and additional site details, assess-

ment and tax information, and historical property tax figures for each parcel. “Many times we will receive phone calls from individuals asking information for a particular address.” said Brough. “You can now see the address points that are assigned to every parcel in the county.” Brough continued, “Once locating the property of interest, an individual can then identify all the attributes we maintain, i.e. ownership, lot size, sale information, assessments and taxes to name a few.” She said, “It’s an excellent resource for current and potential property owners.” Supervisor of Assessments Brough also noted that if persons don’t have access to the internet or are otherwise unable to utilize the website, she and her staff are happy to continue to assist people by phone or in person in her office which is located on the first floor of the Marion County Courthouse. office and courthouse are open on Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This new information is an example of the many technological improvements that have been implemented by Chief County Assessment Officer Brough during her time in the Supervisor of Assessments’ office. Brough also noted that all technology enhancements have been funded through document recording fees paid to her office and not through increased property taxes levied by the Marion County Board.

SENATE APPROVES EXPANSIONOF CONCEALED CARRY FOR ILLINOIS-BASED MILITARY Active-duty members of the military, stationed in Illinois but who are nonresidents, would be able to obtain Concealed Carry permits under legislation, cosponsored by Senator Kyle McCarter and approved Wednesday by the State Senate. “This is a logical extension of our Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) law,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “By the very nature of their service to our country, members of the military are certainly qualified and capable of meeting the responsibilities that go with carrying a concealed firearm.” Under Senate Bill 553, active duty military stationed in Illinois, but who are not citizens of Illinois, would be considered eligible for an Illinois Concealed Carry permit.

The legislation also grants eligibility to their spouses. Additionally, SB553 clears up a conflict in Illinois law between the state’s Criminal Code and Wildlife Code. The measure would allow concealed carry permit holders and current or retired police officers to carry concealed firearms while hunting. “Concealed Carry is about having the ability to defend yourself and your family. Terrorists make no secret about their intent to do harm to members of the militar y. In Illinois, members of the military – whether or not they are Illinois residents – should have the ability to protect themselves,” said McCarter. Non-resident members of the military would still have to pay the same fees and acquire the same level of training as any other

resident Concealed Carry Weapon permit holder. Sen. McCarter has spons ore d a nu mb e r of Concealed Carry-related legislation during the current two-year period of the 99th General Assembly. Those measures include some of the same issues included in Senate Bill 553. “Sometimes the minority party doesn’t get their specific legislation passed while the majority – introducing the same kind of measure – does win approval. Regardless of who introduced the legislation, the idea is a good one and SB553 is a logical addition to our Concealed Carry Weapon law. I’m pleased to be part of its sponsorship,” said McCarter. Senate Bill 553 now moves to the Illinois for consideration.

Obama held a press conference last Sunday addressing the mass shooting in Florida that left 50 dead (49 victims and the shooter) and another 53 wounded and fighting for their lives. At this point, this terrorist shooting was the worst in modern U.S. history. It leaves me wondering when did this kind of craziness start, but more important, where does it stop? On this latest tragedy, the shooter made a call to 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS. We also know that in the past he had been investigated by the FBI; he was a private security guard and was assigned to a number of federal buildings. He was a sympathizer with radical Islam and inspired by ISIS. Fitting in with the ISIS ideology against gays, along with many other communities, this tragedy was carried out at Pulse, a well known gay night club in Orlando, Florida. He clearly wanted the world to know this was an ISIS inspired attack.

Keep in mind Ramadan started a few days ago, and some Islamic extremists have said that to kill Americans during this Muslim time of atonement will gain ten times more glory in heaven by "killing the infidel." During the press conference, as Obama addressed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, he said, "While still learning all the facts, this was an act of terrorism by an individual filled with hate." He also said the federal government would help Orlando in any way they could. Obama pointed out any attack on Americans is an attack on all Americans. Obama's entire press conference lasted less than five minutes and he answered no questions. I believe this was the first time I have heard him use the words terrorist attack in any press conference after the fact. However, he never used the words Islamic or ISIS. What is clear is this

shooter was born in the U.S., raised by parents from Afghanistan and was a Muslim. ISIS did come out and say the shooter was an ISIS fighter! So they are taking credit for yet another barbaric act. I said earlier, "When does this stop?" In my opinion, it has to start with stronger leadership than we've had over the last eight years. In closing, let me say the name of the shooter was not used in this column; that was done in honor of those that lost their lives and those that are now fighting for their lives. No ISIS terrorist deserves to have his or her name in the press. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their families. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I’m in a dilemma. I’ve had my dog for about five years. “Shera” stays with me in my apartment, one of six in a triple-decker house, and there have been no problems until now. Now, a new owner has bought the house and told me I cannot have a pet: I must either get rid of Shera or move out. What can I do? — Desperate in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR DESPERATE: I feel for you, and I hope I can give you some useful advice in this limited space. My first tip is to act fast, and the sooner the better. I recommend immediately contacting

your state’s legal services or aid resource, if there is one, to discuss the problem. You also could find free or low-cost legal advice through the state’s bar association or perhaps at a local university. Your local library can be a great resource, too — you can get online for free, and the librarians can be very helpful. Renters have fairly extensive rights in most states. A new landlord usually cannot simply walk in and demand you get rid of your pet. The existing lease typically cannot be changed suddenly, either. And even if you don’t have a signed lease (some apartments are still “handshake” agreements) the landlord typically must still give reasonable notice of a change in the terms. You also might try offering your landlord a non-refundable pet deposit. These are sometimes required in rentals that accept pets.

1. This is an adult, female Lab/ Great Pyrenees mix. She is friendly but needs to be the only dog. 2. This is an adult, female Lab. She is friendly and full of energy. 3. This is an adult Mastiff mix. She is spayed and very friendly. 4. This is a young, male Lab pup. He is a bundle of energy and loves attention. Residents of the City of Centralia who own a dog or cat are required to purchase a city tag for each animal. They can be purchased at City Hall. Failure to purchase this tag can result in a $150.00 fine. If you are interested in a Pet of the Week, or any animal, call 5337647 or visit the Centralia Animal Shelter. Directions to the shelter are as follows: Turn south at the intersection of Hwy. 161 E. (McCord) and Airport Rd. Go 1-1/2 miles, then turn left on Copple Rd. Go 1/2 mile to Woods Lane, turn left to shelter on left. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. ADOPT AN ANIMAL, SAVE A LIFE! by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved English author and humorist P.G. Wodehouse, probably best known for his tales of Wooster and Jeeves, who made the following observation: "Judges, as a class, display, in the matter of arranging [divorce settlements] that reckless generosity which is found only in men who are giving away someone else's money." • Brides in ancient Rome carried sheaves of

wheat, not bouquets of flowers. • Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, had a pet parrot with a questionable vocabulary. In fact, Poll (the pet in question) was so foul-mouthed (-beaked?) that it disrupted Jackson's funeral. Ac c ord i ng to R e v. Best advice: Inspire change by example, not by intimidation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some setbacks could affect your plans to fortify your financial situation. But things start moving again by early next week. Meanwhile, enjoy your resurgent social life. The church of Philadelphia was only one of two churches of Asia that Jesus did not give a word of condemnation. In fact, He gave them a wonderful promise. “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens. ‘I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door.’” (Revelation 3:7-8) What a blessing! Have you ever had a door close to you? I think most of us have at one time or another. It can be disappointing, but if you love God, He promises to “work all things together for your good.” (Romans 8:28) What would you do if God

set before you “an open door”? I hope you would take advantage of the great opportunity. How can we come to the place where, like the church of Philadelphia, God sets before us an “open door and no one can shut it”? THE POWER OF BROTHERLY LOVE. This church was situated in the city of ancient Philadelphia. The name means “brotherly love”. The inhabitants were often victims of earthquake and the eruption of an active volcano. We are admonished, “Let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to entertain strangers . . . Remember the prisoners.” (Hebrews 13:1-3; II Peter 1:7-8) God opens doors to those who display “brotherly love”. Perhaps the best church sign I’ve ever seen was displayed at Cornerstone

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 Church in Marion IL. I’ll share an abbreviated form, “Cornerstone Church welcomes those who are single, married, divorced, engaged, gay or straight. We welcome the filthy rich, dirt poor, or no habla ingles. We also welcome those who are crying newborns, old as dirt, skinny as a rail, or could afford to lose a few pounds. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, . . . nose pickers, veterans, vegetarians, . . . If you blew all your offering money at the casino, you are welcome here. If you are inked, pierced, or both, you are in the right place. If you are in recovery or still addicted, we are happy to see you. “ We w e l c om e y ou because we have experienced the thrill of being welcomed by God. We were once a mess, but God willingly welcomed us through the cross-stretched arms of Jesus. He gave His life so we could experience real life and be part of His forever family. God is delighted to see you here. We are too!” That’s a church of the open door! THE POWER OF THE KEY OF DAVID. “He who has the key of David.” (Revelation 3:7) Jesus Christ is the son of David. The key of David speaks of the authority believers have in the name of Jesus. The power of

prayer in Jesus name opens doors that no one can shut. (John 14:13-14; 15-16; 16:23-26) The church of Philadelphia was commended by Jesus, “You . . . have kept my Word and have not denied my name.” (Revelation 3:8) They suffered much persecution and many were martyred. They were thus a small church but a mighty church. Be faithful to the name of Jesus. THE POWER OF PERSEVERANCE. Because this church persevered under severe trials, God promised them many blessings. (Revelation 3:9-11) The seal of the city of God and the Lord’s new name would be upon their heads. (Revelation 3:12) An open door that no one could shut would be set before them. Near our home there is a youth camp called the Pinnacles. Carved out of the rock by wind and water over thousands of years are breathtaking spires, pinnacles, cliffs and caves. The word perseverance comes to me. Recently a post on Facebook read, “Patience is not just enduring testing and trials. It’s your attitude in the midst of them.” Persevere in faith and watch God open a door that no one can shut. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
