VFW LADIES AUXILIARY
That was then; this is now. It may come as a surprise to you to learn that the mosquito is the most deadly animal on the planet. Each year, the little female of the species bites, drinks from and in so doing infects, millions of people and animals around the world, killing more than even we humans do. This year's Olympics are to be held in Brazil. They are not ready, nor are they prepared to deal with the ramifications of the Zika virus, a virus we are just beginning to understand, a virus that deforms babies and can be transmitted sexually. That last part has me t he most wor r ie d: Athletes are proud of their bodies. They actually made the hookup app Tinder a household name due to its handiness in the last Athletes Village. The World Health Organization is calling for a delay. Rio is in disarray. We should heed its advice. This is how outbreaks occur, and for what? We can still play the Games, but we can't be stupid. Zika is for real, and figuring out how to handle this threat is as serious as any Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.

Don't Go to Rio Like all great stories, here's one that starts with a girl and ends with a heart attack. And, like many misapplied missives, let's try and apply it to the upcoming Olympic Games at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The year is 1996, and the place is Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, the "commons area" for that year's games. Located just outside the Athletes Village at Georgia Tech and the dorms at Georgia State, and forced into a small, once-barren urban parcel between the Georgia Dome and CNN headquarters, Olympic Park was a place to grab a beer at the spacious Anheuser-Busch tent, listen to a slate of live bands and queue up for a taxi ride home or shuttle to your car. This was where I spent much of my time, working for a large tech company inside the Athletes Village. It was a magical Olympics: Ali lit the torch. Kerri Strug landed

a vault on a broken leg. The Dream Team was regulating. And on July 27, after a shift, I decided to celebrate at the Olympic Park and listen to a few bands. At that point, I ran into a girl from days gone by, and consumed with nostalgia, we decided to leave the park to visit with one another. After all, the next band was "Jack Mack and the Heart Attack," and who the heck were they? I had just seen Run DMC play the Olympic Athletes Laundromat and spent the afternoon chilling with Ziggy Marley underneath a tree ... I was good. I also was lucky. Twenty minutes later, a bomb went off in the park, killing two people and injuring more than 100. Had we stayed, we would have been within 50 yards of the blast, and almost certainly taken a nail or two from the insidious bomb. letters to the editor
We have tried to get Obama to identify the enemy we are fighting in the Middle East. On our way to the November elections, Trump has given many speeches in an attempt to get the left and Hillary to use the words "Islamic Terrorism." Recently HRC in a speech said that she could say those words. The right and left went nuts, declaring Trump has forced her to use those words to define our enemies.
Now for the grammar lesson. HRC said she has the ability to say those words. She didn't commit to use those words! HRC snookered many of you and likely has put that attack behind her. If you missed her use of grammar to mislead, it's time to listen when anyone speaks. Too many assume what was said and never evaluate what really is said. Richard Freeman Salem _________________

THE HAUNTED MANSION'S FIRST APPEARANCE AT BALLOON FEST 2016
GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD RECIPIENT, NURSE AND GOOD SAMARITAN
Since 1916, Girl Scouts have been making meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and around the world through their Girl Scout Gold Award projects. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. As the Girl Scout Gold Award celebrates 100 years of girls changing the world, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) will highlight some of our shining stars who exemplify the greatness of this award. Jennifer Thole from Trenton, IL grew up knowing the importance of health care. Her mom is a nurse and Jennifer herself was working as a nurse assistant in high school. When contemplating her Girl Scout Gold Award project, it was a natural fit for her to choose a project related to health care. Jennifer brainstormed some ideas and decided to develop a health fair for kids that focused on making smart food choices, Submitted Photo staying active and proac-
The Haunted Mansion was built in 2006 by Amazon Balloons. It stands approximately 120 ft. tall and is 140,000 cubic feet in volume. He has been in ballooning ever since that time. Darrell runs a balloon ride business in Oklahoma City and travels all over the Midwest to share his love of the wonderful sport of ballooning. The Haunted Mansion will be at Balloon Fest 2016 thanks to Macz Funeral Homes, a Major Sponsor of Balloon Fest. tively combatting diabetes. Jennifer’s Girl Scout Gold Award project was titled Sugar and Spice is Not Always so Nice. Jennifer got the ball rolling by setting up meetings with the Diabetes Educator and Dietician at her local hospital. She took the knowledge she had gained and developed a health fair in which parents and their children could learn more about healthy and easy after school snacks, fun exercises and games, calculating body mass index and visual representations of sugar amounts in various candies and sodas. Jennifer’s project was a great success. After graduating from Mater Dei High School in 2009, Jennifer continued to pursue the health care field. She graduated from Quincy Universit y BlessingRieman College of Nursing in 2013. Today, she is a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. One of the requirements of the Girl Scout Gold Award is that the project must fill a need in the girl’s community. “Giving back” has always been one thing Girl Scouts, especially Girl Scout Gold Award recipi-

ents, excel in. Jennifer didn’t stop “giving back” once she completed her Gold Award. In fact, her project not only paved the way for her career but also for how she is now able to be of service to others. This spring, Jennifer was part of a team that went on a surgical mission trip to Bohol, Philippines. This team spent 12 days in Bohol where they performed 115 surgeries ranging from goiter removals to hernia repairs to hysterectomies. “The people there have so little yet are so grateful for everything,” said Jennifer. “It was the most eye opening experience I have ever had,” Jennifer added.

Grilled Meat From burgers to steaks, ribs to roast, you're sure to please when you barbecue beef. Some of my favorite recipes are below.
Taco Burgers 1 can (about 1 lb.) refried beans 2 medium-size tomatoes, sliced 1 large ripe avocado, pitted, peeled, sliced, and tossed with 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 small onion, chopped 1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs
Soy-Dipped Burgers 3 lbs. lean ground beef 8 hamburger buns or French rolls, split and buttered Thinly sliced tomatoes Green bell pepper rings
In a bowl, mix soy, water, garlic, ginger, Worcestershire, and sugar. Shape beef into 8 patties, each about 1 inch thick; place in a large heavy-duty plastic bag. Pour soy marinade over patties in bag; seal bag securely and rotate to distribute marinade. Place in a shallow baking pan. Refrigerate (or place in a picnic cooler) for 1 to 2 hours. Lift patties from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place patties on a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once and basting several times with marinade, until done to your liking; cut to test (about 10 minutes for medium-rare). When you turn patties, place buns, cut side down, around outside of grill to toast. Serve patties on buns, with tomatoes and bell pepper rings. Makes 8 servings.
Fajitas 3 lbs. skirt steaks, trimmed of excess fat 1/2 cup lime juice 1/3 cup salad oil 1/3 cup tequila or lime juice 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed 1½ tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. oregano leaves 1/2 tsp. pepper

Place beans in a pan and heat through; keep warm. Place tomatoes and avocado in separate dishes. In a bowl, combine beef, onion, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire, chiles, and cumin. Mix well, then shape into 6 rectangular patties, each about 3/8 inch thick. Place patties on a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until browned and done-to your liking; cut to test (4 to 6 minutes for medium-rare). To serve, heat tortillas on grill just until softened (15 to 20 seconds), turning often with tongs. Spread some beans on a tortilla; then place a meat patty, tomatoes, and avocado slices on one side and drizzle with taco sauce. Fold other side of tortilla over meat and vegetables; eat out of hand. 4 or 5 small onions (unpeeled), cut in half lengthwise 8 to 10 green onions, rinsed well and drained 3 cans (about 1 lb. each) refried beans Salsa Guacamole 16 to 20 flour tortillas, each about 8" diameter Sour cream Fresh cilantro (coriander) sprigs
Cut steaks crosswise into about 12-inch lengths, then arrange in a 9- by 13-inch dish. Mix lime juice, oil, tequila, garlic, cumin, oregano, and pepper. Pour over meat; turn meat to coat. Place onion halves, cut side down, in marinade alongside meat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until next day, turning meat occasionally. Tie green onions together 3 inches from roots to form a brush. Heat beans in a large pan; keep warm. Prepare salsa and guacamole. Place onion halves on a lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook for about 7 minutes; turn over. Lift meat from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place on grill. Baste meat and onion halves with the marinade, using green onion roots as a brush. Continue to cook onion halves until soft and browned (5 to 9 more minutes). Cook meat, turning once, until done to your liking; cut to test (about 6 minutes for rare). Transfer meat and onions to a carving board; keep warm. Roll green onion brush in marinade and lay on grill; turn often until tops are wilted (3 to 5 minutes). Place brush on board; remove string. Thinly slice meat across the grain. Heat tortillas on grill as needed, turning often with tongs, just until softened (15 to 30 seconds). Place a few meat slices down center of each tortilla; top with some beans, a few pieces of onion from onion halves, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and cilantro. Fold to enclose. Eat green onions alongside. Makes 8 to 10 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. A handful of voters didn't pick Donald Trump, the people picked Donald Trump. The Republican Party didn't pick Donald Trump, the people picked Donald Trump. I believe Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is standing behind that, and has said as much, "He is the people's choice" I'm sure Paul Ryan feels like I do; there are times Donald Trump opens his mouth and I hold my breath. But what's worse, I feel that under Hillary Clinton I would be concerned about my children and grandchildren every day — concerned for their safety and security. Many in the liberal media are focusing on the Republican Party, the divided party. There's nothing more divided than the Democratic Party right now. So with all this said, I'll be honest and up front: In November on election day

I'm Not Voting For Donald Trump!
SALEM
I'm voting against a liar and a socialist. I can't comprehend anyone voting for Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. But every legal citizen in this country has the right to vote for their candidate of choice. I'm personally against the "Dump Trump" movement and will be against anyone in the Republican Party that subscribes to this movement. Again, I am going back to one fact, Donald Trump will the Republican nominee because it's the will of the people. But how likely is it the "Dump Trump" movement will succeed? It's not very likely, and I'm concerned that if anyone participates in this effort it's only because they are part of the corrupt Washington establishment and trust.

But stepping back a couple of paragraphs to the "Dump Trump" movement, Donald Trump would relish that fight! One thing Trump could do to calm the waters is choose a Vice President. Hillary Clinton's latest commercial focus is: Donald Trump is too dangerous for America. This anti-Trump commercial is coming from a candidate, Hillary Clinton, who has proven and shown how dangerous she is for America, starting with Libya, going on to Benghazi, and the email debacle that has allowed countries like Russia to hack into classified emails. How dangerous can someone be! Speaking of Hillar y Clinton, and the email scandal, she is under investigation by the FBI. But on this subject let me leave you with this thought: After the FBI investigation is concluded and if the FBI finds Hillary Clinton broke the law, the case will move on to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and she will be the one to decide if charges are to be filed. Let me remind you that Loretta Lynch was nominated by Barack Obama. So do I look for charges to be filed? Or a better question is, do you? When asked about this issue, Loretta Lynch danced around the questions. When asked if someone else or a committee should make the decision because of a conflict of interest, she wouldn't answer directly, and I sensed anger in her response. On to the renewed debate on guns in the wake of the Orlando massacre. The attacker used a semi automatic weapon and he was on the terrorist watch list. But he bought a gun legally. I do have an issue with that. However, I still go back to the fact that in the majority
of these tragic attacks the weapons were not acquired in that manner. A prime example of this point is the Boston bombers. My big question about Orlando is, "The FBI interviewed this attacker on three different occasions?!" And my final point: It's too bad there weren't a few individuals with concealed weapons at Pulse, where the Orlando shooting took place. The outcome might have been different. But in my opinion, everything goes back to the fact that those wanting to harm others will find a way. And it's my right to protect myself, my family and others, and no one has the right to take that freedom away. Let me leave you with just a few famous quotes: "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of guns." — Thomas Jefferson, 1776 "I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery." — Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to James Madison, 1787 "To disarm people... is the most effective way to enslave them." — George Mason, 1788 "The constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping there own arms." — Samuel Adams, 1788 Until next week. Angry Birds Recently there was a post with a picture of my cute five-year-old granddaughter and her friend sitting on the front row of a near empty theatre with a tub of popcorn and drink sitting on their laps. They were waiting in anticipation for the movie “Angry Birds” to start. I remember asking someone what the theme of the movie was and they laughingly replied that it was nonsensical. “Angry Birds” may be entertaining to children, but in real life unresolved anger can be devastating. “Angry Birds” may fly overhead and flutter in our stomach, but we must not let them alight. God’s Word instructs us how to deal with anger. “Be angry and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:25-31) Apply God’s solution to the devastation of anger. SPEAK TRUTH. “Therefore, putting away lying. Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor.” (Ephesians 4:25) Lying or ignoring your anger will not resolve it. To bottle up your emo-

tions could cause anger to seethe, poison, agitate, and eventually explode. We are admonished to “speak the truth in love.” Honestly share how you feel about a certain matter. It may not resolve the issue but it will help you stay healthy spiritually and emotionally. Sometimes we make excuses for our anger, such as, “That’s my heritage.” Or “I’m human.” Recently I saw this post on Facebook. “Instead of using ‘I’m human’ as an excuse to walk in the flesh, try using, ‘I’m saved’ as a reason to walk in the Spirit.” DEAL WITH YOUR ANGER BEFORE IT CAN DEVELOP INTO SIN. Early one morning I was driving down the road when a flock of blackbirds flew into my path. I thought they all narrowly escaped colliding with my van. But when I arrived at my destination, I was shocked to find one of the blackbirds embedded in the grille of my van. The bird had a broken neck and I had to dig the gory mess out with a shovel. Unresolved anger can become an evil gory mess, if not dealt with immediately. “Do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” (Ephe-
sians 4:26) Jesus equated unrighteous anger to murder and taught that it would bring the severe judgement of God. (Matthew 5:21-31) Anger often leads to other sins such as stealing, cursing, venomous words, and the most serious effect of all, grieving the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 4:28-30) Unresolved anger opens a door for the devil to bring about sickness, pain, emotional turmoil, and spiritual weakness and confusion. Moses’ anger kept him out of the Promised Land. We are warned not to have friendship with an angry man. Their anger can be toxic, contagious, and dangerous. (Proverbs 22:24; 29:22) FORGIVE QUICKLY. Remember there is a day of redemption coming. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30) Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse and wash away your sins. Choose to put away anger and “evil speaking.” (Ephesians 4:31) Be positive and kind. “And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32) Do you have angry birds of stress or anger swooping around you? Give it to God. Forgive and love as Christ has loved and forgiven you. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ll never forget the first cat I ever brought home. “Two Socks” was a shelter cat who had been adopted by a college friend. For reasons I won’t go into, my friend was unable to keep him and figured this out about two weeks after adopting him from the local shelter. He was about a year old then, very shy and skittish, but also super curious about everything.

Pets In Need 1. This is a nice, female, tortoiseshell kitten, about 4 months old. 2. These sweet kittens have been weaned and are about 9 weeks old. 3. Domino is a male Boston Terrier mix.
June Is Adopt a Cat Month
My friend asked if I’d like to keep Two Socks, and even though I had never owned a cat before and I would have to dredge up a pet fee to keep him in my apartment, I said yes. I didn’t regret it one bit. Two Socks had personality to spare. Over time he was joined by two more cats, “Chewy” and “Belle,” but he ruled the apartment despite his shy nature. Two Socks lived to be about 14 and eventually passed away after a long illness. You never forget your first pet. I only regret that I didn’t get to keep pets when I was younger, but I’m making up for it now thanks to that little black-and-white cat — Kathy in Des Moines, Iowa

Poninski Family, Stuehmeier Family, DePew Family, Gray Family mmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Family and friends rally around as you confront an unexpected challenge. Some plans will have to be changed until all the fuss and fluster settle down. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creative gifts find new outlets for expression this week. Someone (a Libra, perhaps) has ideas that you might find surprisingly appealing. Pay attention. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll soon be able to restart those delayed travel plans. A financial matter you thought was closed could suddenly reopen. Be prepared to take swift, decisive action. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A romantic relationship takes an unexpected turn. You might be confused about how to react. It’s best not to be rushed into a decision that you’re not ready to make. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Don’t let your pride stand in the way of resolving an emotionally painful situation. This is a good time to deal with it and let the healing finally begin. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A workplace problem that you’ve been handling so well suddenly spins out of control. Don’t panic. You can rely on your good sense to help you restore order. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Wearing rose-colored glasses won’t solve a thorny personal situation. You need to take a hard look
at what’s happening and then act according to the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Weigh all your options carefully before making any decisions you’ve been putting off. Then go ahead and plan a weekend of family fun. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While personal and financial situations continue to improve, some setbacks might occur. But they’re only temporary, so hang in there. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family matters dominate the week. Health problems raise concern, but soon prove to be less serious than you had feared. Things start easing up by the weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Most situations are calmer now, both at home and on the job. But there’s still a chance that a coworker will set off another round of unpleasantness. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s no need to fish for compliments from an admirer who can’t say enough nice things about you. The upcoming holiday bodes well for family gatherings.
