In the news last week: • The Senate Democrats demonstrate rebellious behavior. • The Supreme Court ruling on Obama's illegal immigration. S e n at e D e m o c r at s showed stunning and unruly behavior on the House floor, chanting, "no bill, no break" and waving pieces of paper with the names of gun victims. They continued their protest even as lawmakers voted on a previously scheduled and unrelated measure to overturn a veto by Barack Obama. The gun protest sit-in began last Wednesday as Democrats demanded votes on gun control bills. Disrespectfully, they shouted down House Speaker Paul Ryan when he attempted to restore order as their protest stretched into the night. Ryan attempted to ignore their childish outbursts and behavior, pounding his gavel over the Democrats' shouting. Shame! Shame! Shame! After that the Democrats started singing "We Shall Overcome" and then the Democrats said they would stay until the Republicans yielded to their demands to hold votes on the bills to strengthen background checks and prevent people on the no fly list from getting guns, in the wake of the Orlando massacre. Ryan dismissed the protest as "nothing more than a publicity stunt," and publicity they got. In an interview with CNN, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan made it clear

there would not be a vote and said, "We're not going to take away a citizen's constitutional rights without due process." Although cameras were turned off, their unprofessional behavior was broadcast to the world from the Democrats' cell phones and feeds were picked up by C-Span. And even after being asked by Security to clear the floor, Nancy Pelosi said, "That's not going to happen." Remember Ms. Pelosi? She's the brain dead Democrat that actually said on the Obamacare bill in the middle of the night, "Let's vote on this bill so we can find out what's in it." At one point Pelosi said the sit-in would continue "until hell freezes over." What a rocket scientist. In the end, the security check did take places, involving five agents and a dog, as the House Democrat leader continued to speak. I personally couldn't help but wonder if the Republicans had behaved in such a manner, what would the outcome have been! Over all, more than 170 Democrats took part in the sit-in, with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin joining in at one point. The bottom line on this issue is under the current administration there is no telling what could happen if this bill did pass. Could it give Barack Obama more freedom to wreak havoc with the American people as he has the last seven years? The reality is that the Democrats can continue to talk the talk, but they have

no end game strategy, and the fact is, the Senate has already defeated the measure they're calling for. The House is focused on eliminating terrorists, not the constitutional rights of law abiding citizens. I guess the Senate Democrats think that stunts on the floor will change that! However, as the two sides raced on, staff brought in food, pillows and even sleeping bags. What a side show, all on taxpayer dollars! And as the sit-in continued, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee used the opportunity to fund raise, with Pelosi telling supporters, “I need 6,000 gifts in the door during tonight's sit-in. Will you pitch in $1?” And some call this leadership. You might; I don't! To me the focus should be on immigration. Case in point, the shooter of the 49 innocent murdered and wounde d vic t ims in Orlando, Florida. The shooter's dear old dad supports the Taliban and hates gays. He is exactly the kind of immigrant you would hope to deny the priceless privilege of coming here, not to mention the shooter's wife. Even though it's apparent she wasn't an innocent bystander she still hasn't been arrested. The fact is criminals will always find a way to get the gun of their choice, or the weapon of their choice, whether it's a bomb, a knife or whatever. In my opinion, Continued on page 10

Finding Happiness Most people want to b e h appy. In t he Preamble of the Declaration of Independence our forefathers made this radical declaration, “We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” But why in America are so few truly happy? Many people try to find happiness in the wrong manner and place. God wants us to be happy. “And He brought forth His people with joy and His chosen with g l a d n e s s .” ( Ps a l m 105:43) Consider these scriptural keys to happiness. HAPPINESS IS A DECISION. You will never truly be happy unless you choose to be happy. True happiness is not dependent on circumstances or the people around you. The psalmist declares, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalms 34:1-2) Don’t allow others to

1. Is the Book of Zion in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham" is w hos e f irst vers e? Matthew, Mark, Luke, John 3. In Acts 10, what

affect your happiness. Be a thermostat not a thermometer. Regulate your environment – don’t just register it. Paul said that he had learned the secret of being content in all things. (Philippians 4:11-12) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) HAPPINESS IS AN INSIDE JOB. It’s Jesus living on the inside of your heart. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him. And sup with him and he with me.” ( R e v e l at i o n 3 : 2 0 ) Happiness is knowing your sins are forgiven. “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalms 32:1-2) In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

teaches eight attitudes that generate happiness. The first is, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:1-10) Recently, I came across these three thieves of happiness on Facebook, “3 Ways to Fail at Everything in Life: 1) Blame all your problems on others; 2) Complain about everything; 3) Do not be grateful.” HAPPINESS IS IN GIVING. Jesus taught that if you want to be happy, you must learn to give your life away. (Matthew 16:24) Jesus was the most selfless person who ever lived on earth. Self-centered, selfish people are not happy. The Holy Spirit gave us this key, “For God loves a cheerful giver.” (II Corinthians 2:6-9) HAPPINESS IS IN PLEASING GOD NOT PEOPLE. You will never be happy if you allow other people to run your life or strive for the approval of others. Be yourself and realize that God made you unique. He loves you unconditionally. Paul said that he lived his life to please God not man.

(Galatians1:10) Zig Ziglar gave this insight, “The less you respond to negative people the more positive your life will become.” Daily seek God’s will and direction for your life. Jesus revealed his key to happiness, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” (John 4:34) When you stand before the Lord in heaven, the question will not be how much money you made or what you accomplished on earth, but, “What did you do for Jesus?” HA P P I N E S S I S TRUSTING IN GOD. I had a t-shirt that read, “Don’t worry. Be happy!” Consider this awesome statement by A. W. Tozer, “I take refuge in the fact that while I don’t know everything, I do know someone who does!” Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me . . . I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:1-6) What is true happiness? Happiness is the Lord! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

The first day of summer was last week. Summer in our house calls for patio dinners and fruit desserts. Enjoy the recipes below.

Strawberry Patch Shortcake

Shortcake: 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup milk 1/4 cup sugar Topping: 1 egg 1 cup heavy cream 1 T. baking powder 3 T. sifted confectioners' sugar 1 egg white 1/2 tsp. salt Garnish: 2 T. sugar Whole fresh strawberries 1/3 cup unsalted butter Combine sliced strawberries and 1/4 cup sugar; stir gently. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. Lightly grease two 9" cake pans; set aside. To make shortcake dough, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in large mixing bowl; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Preheat oven to 450°F. Combine milk and egg; beat well. Add to flour mixture, stirring with fork until soft dough forms. Pat dough out evenly into cake pans (dough will be sticky, so moisten fingers with water). Beat egg white until stiff peaks form. Brush surface of dough in each cake pan with beaten egg white. Sprinkle each layer with 1 T. sugar. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove shortcakes from pans and let cool completely on wire racks (layers will be thin). To make topping, beat cream with electric mixer on high speed until foamy; gradually add 3 T. confectioners' sugar, beating until soft peaks form. Place 1 cake layer on serving plate. Spread half of whipped cream over layer and arrange half of sliced strawberries on top, using slotted spoon. Repeat procedure with remaining cake layer, whipped cream (reserve a little for garnish), and sliced strawberries. Garnish top of shortcake with reserved whipped cream and whole strawberries. Yield: 8 servings. 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced 1/4 cup sugar

POLITICALLY SPEAKING Continued from page 5

in most of these mass shootings the outcome could have been different if some of the victims had

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area carried concealed weapons. On to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court handed down a significant blow to Obama's immigration policy, enacted after Congress did nothing. The court was deadlocked last Thursday on an immigra-

tion plan implemented by Obama that shielded millions of undocumented immigrants that would grant them the right to work legally in the U.S. The four to four ruling leaves the lower court's ruling in place. Obama was disappointed, stating that, “For more than two centuries, welcoming wave after wave after wave of immigrants has kept us youthful and dynamic.” I never agree with Obama, but on the above statement I would say he's right. However, the differ-

ence is legal and illegal. It's a different time and age. And I can assure you his idea of immigration and mine are two different things, and letting thousands upon thousands of unvetted Syrians in isn't my idea of good immigration policy, and in fact, puts legal citizens at risk. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You feel ready to face up to a major change, although it might involve some risks. A once-dubious family member comes around and offers support and encouragement. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Move forward with your plans, despite discouraging words from those who underestimate the Bovine’s strong will. Your keen instincts will guide you well. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding is easily cleared up. Then go ahead and enjoy some fun and games this week. A Libra might have ideas that merit serious consideration for the future. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel as if you’re in an emotional pressure cooker, but the situation is about to change in your favor. Take time out for some well-earned fun. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A shift in your workplace responsibilities creates resentment among some co-workers. Deal with it before it becomes a threat to your success on the job. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expect some surprises in what you thought was one of your typically well-planned schedules. Deal with them, and then enjoy some lighthearted entertainment. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be careful: What appears to be a solid financial opportunity might have some hidden risks attached.

A hazy personal matter needs to be cleared up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It’s a good time to strengthen ties with family and friends. You might feel unsure about a recent workplace decision, but time will prove you did the right thing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Just when you thought your relationship was comfortable and even predictable, your partner or spouse could spring a potentially life-changing surprise on you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your usually generous self is overshadowed by your equally strong suspicious nature. You might be judging things too harshly. Keep an open mind. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Love and romance dominate the week. Married Aquarians enjoy domestic harmony, while singles could soon be welcoming overtures from loving Leos. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An old health problem recurs, but it is soon dealt with, leaving you eager to get back into the swing of things. A favorable travel period starts this week. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an independent spirit that resists being told what to do. But you’re also wise enough to appreciate good advice. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECKS PERFORMED

Submitted Photo

Last week, the United Methodist Children’s Home Best Beginnings NurseFamily Par tnership program teamed up with the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office to provide free car seat safety checks for local residents. Nearly 73% of child restraints are not installed or used correctly, and we wanted to ensure our local community had an opportunity to learn more about car seat safety. Car seats were checked to see if they met required safety guidelines for the child who uses the seat, and ensure that the seat was installed properly, was not defective or out of date. New car seats were also given out to a few families in need. UMCH would like to thank Sheriff Travis

Allen and his deputies who helped with this event. They look forward to partnering together again next year. The UMCH B est Beginnings program is a voluntary, research-based program where highly educated nurses visit young mothers in their homes during their first pregnancy, up through the first two years of their child’s life. Doula services are also available to first-time parents ages 13-19. This program is available to women who live in both Marion and Jefferson Counties, and meet and low-income guidelines. To learn more about this program, please contact Joyce Butts, RN at 618-2425600 ext. 234 or email her at jbutts@umchome.org
