EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
Faith is the Victory What a powerful presence of God filled the chapel as I ministered at the county jail. As I gave an opportunity for the inmates to share what God was doing in their life, a young man with tattoos on his arms and a radiance about him, raised his hand and asked, “Do you believe that God speaks in dreams? Last night I had a dream and saw the word FAITH in large letters suspended on the wall. Suddenly it exploded and I was knocked off my bed and found myself kneeling, crying out to Jesus to come into my life, forgive me and be my Savior.” What was the catalyst t hat p ower f ully changed that young man’s life? Faith in Christ.

We are given the secret to victory in our life. “For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (I John 5:4-5) George Washington acknowledged his source of victory, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world, without God and the Bible.” Whatever seemingly impossible situations you may be facing, consider the prominence and power of faith throughout the Bible that can bring you victory. THE PRINCIPLE OF FAITH. From Genesis to Revelation we see the principle or law of faith in operation. “But the just shall live by faith.” (Habakkuk

2:4) Faith is the catalyst for the power of God. (Hebrews 4:2) THE PLEASURE OF FAITH. God takes note of faith. Faith impresses God and brings him pleasure. “But without faith it is impossible to please him . . . believe he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) Jesus commended the centurion’s faith. (Matthew 8:10) THE PROPORTION OF FAITH. God’s blessings are given according to your faith. (Matthew 9:22, 29) But the good news is that even faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain. (Mark 17:20) T H E P OW E R O F FAITH. Faith gives victory to overcome the world. (I John 5:4-5) Peter walked on water by faith in the word of the Lord. Have you been around someone who said, “I’m going under!” But if God said I can, then all that’s left is to do it! God wants us to have faith in him and ourselves. I may not be able to do it, but God can. God and I can do anything. As a new song says, “Lord, make us coura-

(I Timothy 3:13; Romans 4:19-25; 10:17) T H E PR AY E R OF FAITH. The prayer of faith will heal the sick. (James 5:15; Mark 16:17-18) Praying in the Spirit will build your faith up. (Jude 20) Cary Grant said, “If you don’t have faith, pray anyway. If you don’t understand or believe the words . . . pray anyway. Prayer can start faith, particularly if you pray aloud. And even the most imperfect prayer is an attempt to reach God.” Pray in faith. Faith is the victory. L ast Tues day Hous e Republicans concluded a two year investigation into the 2012 terror attacks in Benghazi with an 800 page report (http:// benghazi.house.gov/NewInfo) that blames politically motivated bureaucratic delays for failing to prevent or stop the deadly attacks that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Information Officer Sean Smith, and two CIA operatives, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, both former Navy Seals. As reported in USA Today, this report added new details to the findings of seven previous congressional inquiries and is expected to be used to question Hillary's leadership in the fall. And so it should be. Hi l lar y C linton was Secretary of State when the Benghazi attacks occurred. It was reported that Clinton was planning a trip to Libya later in the year of 2012.This forced diplomats to stay at the poorly protected outpost despite the deteriorating security in the region, which in fact, Hillary Clinton had been advised of numerous times, including by p e r s on a l e m a i l s f rom Ambassador Stevens expressing concern for his and others' safety, which was virtually ignored. The recent report also found that despite Barack Obama and Leon Panetta's orders to deploy military support, nothing was sent to Benghzai. The last two Americans were killed at least eight hours after the attacks began. In earlier findings on the Benghazi attacks, it was reported that troops were ordered to stand down even after they prepared to assist these Americans. At this point we may never know the full truth about what happened. But what I do know is Hillary Clinton, then Secretary of State, dropped the ball and contributed to the lies Susan Rice told on a number of Sunday morning talk shows.
Rice said these attacks were about a protest over a video even though Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration knew this wasn't about anything except a planned terrorist attack on Americans. It has also been reported in the past that Hillary Clinton emailed her daughter Chelsea as the attacks were going on and told her it was a terrorist attack. So what does Hillary have to say after these latest findings? She said, "No one has thought about or lost more sleep over the lives we lost in Benghazi than me." I find that statement offensive. We lost four brave American men who had mothers and fathers, wives, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles, along with friends. How dare Hillary Clinton make such an unfeeling statement, especially when her actions said it all; she did nothing to save or protect these young men. She continued to say, "It's time to move on." I'm sure she wishes to, but for many of us, especially the families of these brave men, they can't move on until they get answers. Last week I listened to an interview with Patricia Smith, Sean Smith's mother, one of the Americans that lost their lives. Mrs. Smith said, "Hillary is a liar." And it's definitely not time to move on. She went on to say Hillary "put these people in harm's way and did nothing to protect them," and she wants Hillary to answer for it. She also stated that at the funeral of her son, Sean, along with other victims she was told by Mrs. Clinton that she would get back to her with answers but she never did. When Mrs. Smith called the State Department she was told they couldn't tell her anything because she was not a member of the immediate family. If a mother isn't immediate family, I don't know who is! Where do I expect this to
go? As I said a couple of weeks ago, nowhere. No matter what the findings are, or what the FBI says or does, Hillary Clinton won't face charges for the same reason she won't face charges on the misused emails and server: Because the person that can press charges is Attorney General Loretta Lynch, appointed by Barack Obama. Two plus two equals four every time. Corrupt plus corrupt is corruption. And speaking of Attorney General Loretta Lynch, it just so happens that on Monday of last week she met with Bill Clinton when their planes were just by coincidence at the Pho enix Sky Harb or International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona. The Attorney General and former President met aboard a private plane. Really! At this point, even Democrats are having issues with the Attorney General's meeting with the former President while his wife is under federal investigation. There are laws for us to follow. The Clintons have their own set of laws called no laws. If the above isn't a conflict of interest, I don't know what is! But in Hillary's own words, "What difference does it make?" Last but certainly not least, last week there was another bloody attack. This one is thought to have been carried out by a Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz, and was reportedly planned by ISIS leadership. The latest count of injured and dead at the Istanbul Airport is 42 lost lives and more than 230 hurt. The attacks were carried out by three individuals that blew themselves up. Until next week. PAWS and claws A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.
Should Cats Chew on Bones? DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: My orangeand-white cat, “Gerald,” loves to gnaw on chicken bones. If I don’t watch him, he’ll jump on the counter and grab a bone from a discard plate or even strip bones off of a baked chicken, leaving the meat! Is he a reincarnated dog? — Blake in Miami DEAR BLAKE: It’s certainly not unheard of: Cats may be domesticated, but they’re still predators, and gnawing on bones is a way of getting to some of the tastiest parts of a fresh kill, such as the marrow, as well as a lot of nutrients not concentrated in the meat. However, gnawing on cooked bones is a danger
because the bones could splinter. And the fact that he’s grabbing them unsupervised means he could nab smaller bones that really are problematic. So first, cover up unattended food securely. Next, double-check about the bone-gnawing with Gerald’s vet, who will likely have some recommendations. Review Gerald’s diet: Is he getting enough nutrients in his dry or wet cat food? If you want to keep giving him bones, raw bones are safer; however, that potentially introduces dangerous bacteria like salmonella. Try lightly steaming a few drumsticks, so they’re just cooked, then cool them completely. If he only wants the bones, debone large-boned cuts like the thigh or drumstick, “shock” the bones in boiling water for about 30 seconds and then cool completely. Make up a few, and keep them in the refrigerator. Give Gerald one a day.

Centuries ago the peach was so rare and costly a commodity in Europe (it had to be imported by way of Oriental trade routes) that gardeners across the continent developed techniques to grow it themselves. No such problem existed in America. It's a matter of fact Thomas Jefferson proudly wrote to a friend, "We abound in the luxury of the peach, there being as fine here now as I've ever seen anywhere." When I did a lot of canning, July was the month for peaches. When this sweet succulent fruit was ripe enough, then it was off to the kitchen. One secret my grandmother gave me — among a million other lessons on life — was when canning peaches you need to put a peach seed or two in each jar. She said the reason was to keep them from turning brown and keep them as fresh as the day they were picked. And like always, she was right! Some of my favorite recipes are below.
2
Shortcake: Sweet Biscuit Dough (made with nutmeg) Cream Topping: 1 cup heavy cream 2 T. confectioners’ sugar
1 tsp. granulated sugar
Bath Tissue Limit 2
4
1/4 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg or ground cinnamon 3 T. shortening 2 T. unsalted butter, cut in small pieces 3/4 cup buttermilk
Peach-Almond Tart 6 T. unsalted butter, cut in small pieces 1 egg yolk 3 T. ice water 1/4 cup sliced almonds 1 T. granulated sugar 2 T. unsalted butter, cut in small pieces
Combine flour, ground almonds, confectioners' sugar, and salt in large bowl. With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in 6 T. butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Whisk egg yolk and water together in small bowl. Add to flour mixture, tossing with a fork until all is moistened. Gather dough into a ball. Form dough into a disk shape. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 12-inch circle. Fit into 10-inch tart pan. Trim edges. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour. Preheat oven to 425 ° F. Line pastry with double thickness of foil. Fill with dried beans. Place on baking sheet. Bake at 425° for 15 minutes. Remove foil and beans. Continue baking pastry shell 3 to 5 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on rack. Preheat oven to 375°F. In large bowl toss peaches with orange juice and almond extract. In small bowl, combine cornstarch and 3 T. sugar. Mix well. Sprinkle over peach mixture and toss gently to combine. Arrange peach slices in concentric circles in cooled tart shell. Drizzle with any juice left in bowl. Top with sliced almonds and sprinkle with remaining 1 T. sugar. Dot with 2 T. butter. Bake at 375°F for 45 to 50 minutes until peaches are tender and juices are bubbling near center. Serve warm or at room temperature. Yield: 6 to 8 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. HOW TO TREAT MUSCLE CRAMPS AND PREVENT THEIR RECURRENCE Rare is the athlete who has not had the misfortune of suffering a muscle cramp. Muscle cramps can range from the relatively minor nuisances that can be worked out in a matter of minutes to the more severe cramps that can sideline athletes for an indeterminate period of time. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, muscle cramps are often the byproduct of an overused or injured muscle. When a muscle cramps, that muscle is involuntarily contracting, and that contraction can be very painful. Because athletes tend to repeat their motions when
11

performing exercises, it’s not uncommon for athletes to cramp up from time to time. But even men and women who live sedentary lifestyles can suffer from muscle cramps, which the NLM notes could be triggered by alcoholism, hypothyroidism or kidney failure. Women may suffer muscle cramps when they are pregnant or menstruating. Certain medications may also cause muscle cramps. Men and women concerned about muscle cramps should read the potential side effects of their medications carefully or speak directly with their physi-
cians before taking any medicines that may cause muscle cramps. The online medical resource WebMD notes that medications such as Lasix, a diuretic used to remove fluid from the body, and Crestor, a statin prescribed to adults with high cholesterol, can cause muscle cramps. While dehydration and electrolyte depletion has long been linked to exercise-associated muscle cramps, researchers have been questioning, if not disputing, that link for many years. A 2008 study from South African researchers published in the British Journal of Sports

Medicine did not support a link between exercise-associated muscle cramps and dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Muscle cramps tend to be painful and can occur in the legs, hands, arms, or abdomen or along the rib cage. When cramps occur below the waist, such as in the calf muscle, it can be difficult to stand up.
Treating muscle cramps Muscle cramps require immediate treatment so sufferers can alleviate the pain and/or discomfort cramps can cause. Massaging the cramped muscle or applying ice or heat can alleviate the cramp and its associated pain. Calf or hamstring cramps may be alleviated by putting weight on the affected leg
and bending the knee slightly. Such cramps may also be treated by sitting or lying down with the affected leg straight out and pulling the foot toward the head. To treat quadriceps cramps (those that occur in the front of the thigh), hold onto to something steady and pull the foot of the affected leg back toward the buttock. Preventing future cramps One of the most effective ways to prevent future cramps is to listen to your body when it’s sending you signals that it is fatigued. Overused muscles are vulnerable to cramps, so remember to include rest in your exercise regimen so muscles have time to
recover. If your body feels overtaxed or fatigued before or during a workout, skip the workout or stop it immediately to reduce your risk of cramps or injury. Deficiencies in certain vitamins can directly or indirectly lead to muscle cramps. While the reasons behind the link between thiamine, pantothenic acid and pyridoxine deficiencies and muscle cramps is unknown, speak with your physician about how to include these vitamins in your diet if you have been exp er iencing mus cle cramps. Cramps can be painful and derail athletes. Learning to prevent cramps can protect athletes and ensure they are not sidelined from their favorite activities.

Many people have detected lumps or swelling in their neck, only to visit their physicians and learn they have thyroid cancer. Though thyroid cancer is uncommon, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 62,000 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2015. And while the death rate from thyroid cancer is low compared with most other cancers, it is the most rapidly increasing cancer in United States. Such a reality only emphasizes the importance of learning about thyroid cancer and if there is anything you can do to lower your risk. What is the thyroid? The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front part of the neck that is made up of two main types of cells. Follicular cells use iodine from the blood to make the thyroid hormones that help regulate metabolism. Excessive thyroid hormones is de-

scribed as “hyperthyroidism,” which can cause irregular heartbeat, difficulty sleeping, nervousness, hunger, weight loss, and feelings of being too warm. Hypothyroidism occurs when a person has too little of the thyroid hormone, which can cause fatigue and weight gain and may lead to a person slowing down. The thyroid gland also is made up of C cells that produce the hormone calcitonin, which helps control how the body uses calcium. What is thyroid cancer? Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in the thyroid gland grow abnormally and out of control. Papillary carcinoma is the most common form of thyroid cancer, accounting for roughly 8 out of 10 instances, according to the ACS. Papillary carcinomas typically grow very slowly, but they often spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. As common as papillary carcinomas are with regard
• Gender: The ACS notes that women are at greater risk of developing thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer occurs about three times more often in women than in men. • Age: Thyroid cancer does not discriminate based on age, but women are most often diagnosed in their 40s and 50s while men tend to be diagnosed in their 60s and 70s. • Diet: Areas of the world where diets are low in iodine have more cases of follicular carcinoma than areas, such as the United States, where iodine, which is typically added to table salt and other foods, is more likely to be a regular part of a person’s diet. • Radiation: According to the ACS, exposure to radiation is a proven risk factor for thyroid cancer. Head or neck radiation treatments during childhood increase a person’s risk, though imaging tests such as X-rays and CT scans use low doses of radiation, making their connection to thyroid cancer risk unclear.
to instances of thyroid cancer, they are rarely fatal. Follicular carcinoma is another form of thyroid cancer. Follicular carcinoma does not usually spread to the lymph nodes and is more common in countries where people do not get enough iodine in their diets. The prognosis for follicular carcinoma is very good, though slightly less so than papillary carcinoma. Hürthle cell carcinoma accounts for about 3 percent of thyroid cancers and is a variant follicular carcinoma. Hürthle cell carcinoma is harder to find and treat than other forms of thyroid cancer. Additional types of thyroid cancer include medullary thyroid carcinoma, anaplastic carcinoma, thyroid lymphoma, and thyroid sarcoma. Risk factors for thyroid cancer The following are a handful of risk factors that increase a person’s risk of developing thyroid cancer.

HOW TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY KIDNEYS Few people devote much thought to their kidneys unless their doctor advises them they are having kidney troubles. But kidneys perform essential functions in the human body, filtering water and waste out of blood and urine while also helping to control blood pressure. When operating correctly, kidneys can go a long way toward ensuring a healthy life. But when kidneys are compromised, the results can be very harmful to human health. Kidney disease is no small cause for concern, as the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that more than 20 million Americans may have kidney disease, with millions more being at risk. Kidney disease may be even more problematic in Canada, where the Kidney Foundation of Canada reports that one in 10 Canadians has kidney disease. Though family history is one risk factor for kidney disease, it’s not just genetics that put people at risk. People with diabetes, high blood pressure and/or cardiovascular disease are also at risk of developing kidney disease, which develops gradually and does not often produce physical symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. Because people may not detect symptoms of kidney disease until it reaches an advanced st age, t he NIDDK recommends people schedule routine blood tests to check their glomerular filtration rate, or GFR, which checks to see how well kidneys are filtering. The NIDDK also notes the importance of routine urine tests, which check for protein in urine. The presence of the protein albumin in urine indicates kidney damage. In addition to routine screenings, people can take the following steps to maintain healthy kidneys so they can live long, healthy and active lives. • Maintain a healthy blood pressure. A healthy blood pressure can delay or prevent the onset of kidney disease. The American Heart Association advises that a normal healthy blood pressure is a

systolic number (the top number) less than 120 and a diastolic number (the bottom number) less than 80. The systolic number measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats, while the diastolic number measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats. Have your blood pressure measured by your physician on each visit (and no less than once per year), and speak with him or her about ways to lower your blood pressure if it is high or if your blood pressure falls in the prehypertension range (120-139 over 80-89), which means you are at risk of developing high blood pressure. • Reduce sodium consumption. One simple way to protect your kidneys is to consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. Though sodium serves some essential functions in the body, helping it to regulate blood pressure among other things, people with kidney disease cannot eliminate excess sodium and fluid from their bodies. The resulting buildup in the tissues and bloodstream can contribute to high blood pressure. • Limit alcohol intake. The NIDDK advises that limiting alcohol intake can help to keep kidneys healthy and operating at full strength. Alcohol impacts the body in various ways, and kidneys are not immune to the effects of alcohol. Alcohol can cause
changes in the kidneys that compromise their ability to filter blood. Alcohol also can affect the ability of kidneys to maintain the right amount of water in the body. That’s because alcohol consumed in excess dehydrates the body, making it harder for cells and organs, including the kidneys, to function normally. Speak with your physician about your alcohol consumption and what is considered healthy for someone in your situation. • Consume a kidneyfriendly diet. The right diet also can help people maintain healthy kidneys. A diet that includes kidney-

by Samantha Weaver • It was noted 20thcentury English historian A.J.P. Talyor who made the following sage observation: "Conformity may give you a quiet life; it may even bring you to a University Chair. But all change in history, all advance, comes from the nonconformists. If there had been no troublemakers, no dissenters, we should still be living in caves." • Those who study
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You clever Ewes and Rams love nothing more than to rise to a challenge. So, by all means, if you feel sure about your facts, step right up and defend your side of the issue. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’ve done some great work recently. Now it’s time to reward yourself with something wonderful, perhaps a day at a spa or a night out with someone very special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You love to talk, but don’t forget to make time to do a little more listening; otherwise, you could miss out on an important message someone might be trying to send to you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect indicates some uncertainty about one of your goals. Use this period of shifting attitudes to reassess what you really want and what you’re ready to do to get it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your social life is picking up, and you’ll soon be mingling with old friends and making new ones. But ‘twixt the fun times, stay on top of changing workplace conditions. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) A trusted friend offers understanding as you vent some longpent-up feelings. Now, move on from there and start making the changes you’ve put off all this time. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might well feel uneasy as you face a difficult situation involving someone close to you. But
you know you’re doing the right thing, so stick with your decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’re a good friend to others. Now’s the time to allow them to be good friends to you. Rely on their trusted advice to help you get through an uncertain period. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Family and friends are always important, but especially so at this time. Despite your hectic workplace schedule, make a real effort to include them in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) That project you’ve been working on is almost ready for presentation. But you still need some information from a colleague before you can consider it done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t let those negative attitudes that have sprung up around you drain your energies. Shrug them off, and move ahead with the confidence that you can get the job done. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Aspects favor some dedicated fun time for the hardworking Piscean. A nice, refreshing plunge into the social swim can recharge your physical and emotional batteries. BORN THIS WEEK: You love to travel and be with people.
