CONVENIENT TIMES FOR REQUIRED SCHOOL PHYSICALS Crossro ads Fami ly Medicine of Mt. Vernon is offering convenient times for parents of students to get school physicals and vaccinations. School physicals are required for students enrolling for the first time or for students who are entering kindergarten, sixth grade, or ninth grade at any Illinois school. Crossro ads Fami ly Medicine of Mt. Vernon will have special office hours on Saturday, August 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It will also have extended hours until 8:00 p.m. on upcoming Thursdays, July 21, July 28, August 4, and August 11. “We want to have convenient times for parents to walk-in, with no appointment necessary, and receive
their child’s school physical and immunizations. No matter what school district your child is enrolled in, we have the school physical forms and are ready to help,” says Sonya McKinney, Family Nurse Practitioner. McKinney is also working with Mt. Vernon District 80 to perform physicals at the Registration Fair at the Primary Center on August 4 and 5. “Parents are getting their children ready for school. They are purchasing school supplies and new outfits, which can be done conveniently in the evening or the weekends. Now they have the same opportunity at Crossroads Family Medicine,” says McKinney. Medicine of Mt. Vernon is a part of Crossroads Community Hospital and is located in the medical office building at 209 Crossroads Place, Suite 120. Normal operating hours are listed as 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Parents with questions are asked to call 618-244-6222 for more information. According to DHS documents: “Enrolling for the first time means that the student has never previously attended an Illinois school. The child may be coming from another state or country or may have been home schooled. The child would need a physical that was completed within one year prior to the date of entry. LAST CALL FOR WASHINGTON CFB’S “COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANT” APPLICATIONS At the Washington County Farm Bureau, they understand the amount of hard work and sweat equity that is required to make a lasting impact in our community. For almost 90 years, the Washington County Farm Bureau has offered programs and services in Washington County to inform, strengthen, and develop the agricultural industry. They continue that same mission today by investing time and resources to improve the economic wellbeing of agriculture, and enriching the quality of our rural way of life. Despite their best efforts, they realize that they cannot meet all of the needs in Washington County by themselves. This is why they created the “Community Impact Grant Program.” There are many great ideas for community-based projects which, unfortunately, do not become a reality. The Community Impact Grant Program seeks to identify various projects that will improve our community and create partnerships with groups and individuals to make those projects a reality. Proposals will be accepted through July 31. The submitting organization or individual must be based in Washington County or have operations in the county. Examples of organizations include: schools, civic orga-

God chooses the most unlikely people to be the subjects of His stories of amazing grace. That’s who He is. Consider the amazing life of Rahab, the harlot. It was time for Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. God directed them to destroy the city of Jericho, that stood in their way. Joshua sent two spies to scout out the city. “So they came to the house of a harlot named Rahab and lodged there.” (Joshua 2:1-2) The amazing life of Rahab can teach us lessons that can change our life forever. RAHAB BECAME A WOMAN OF AMAZING FAITH. Rahab recognized who the two spies were and hid them on the rooftop of her house. She had heard how Gad parted the Red Sea and delivered the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. They defeated the kings and inhabitants around them. Rahab declared, “For the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord . . . that you

will show kindness to my father’s house . . . and deliver our lives from death.” (Joshua 2:4-14) Rahab didn’t have the scriptures and promises, but she believed in the one true God. She was willing to risk her life by hiding the two spies. She is listed in God’s Hall of Faith. (Hebrews 11:3-31) James refers to Rahab as an example of faith that brings justification. ( Jame s 2 : 2 5 ) G o d rewards such faith. (Hebrews 11:6; Romans 10:8-13) RAHAB DIDN’ T ALLOW HER PAST TO D I C TAT E H E R FUTURE. She was used and abused by men. She was shunned and hated by society. But she wasn’t willing to stay stuck on a dead-end street in a life of hopelessness and helplessness. She refused to be a victim and instead became a citizen of heaven. (II Corinthians 5:17) God had an amazing future for her. (Jeremiah 29:11) She became the great-great

grandmother of King David from whom the lineage of Jesus Christ is traced. And she is mentioned three times in the New Testament. Don’t let your past dictate your future. RAHAB’S AMAZING C HOIC E WA SN’ T ABOUT SAVING HER OWN LIFE. Our decisions today impact those around us. Rahab’s faith and decision brought salvation to her whole family. (Acts 16:30-31) Paul gave a promise to the Philippian jailer that you can claim for your family. RAHAB BECAME A WOMAN OF AMAZING GRACE. She asked for a token, a sign. The spies instructed her to hang a scarlet cord out her window. When the army of Israel came against Jericho, all who were in the house where the scarlet cord hung would be spared. That scarlet cord speaks of the first Passover, when the blood of a lamb was smeared on the doorposts of Israel’s homes. When the death angel passed over the land, all who by faith applied the blood were spared the death of the first-born son. (Exodus 12) The red cord looked forward to the sacrificial
death of Jesus, the Lamb of God, on the cross. (John 3:14-17); I Peter 1:18-19) The amazing grace of God reveals the goodness of God that leads to repentance. (Romans 2:4) RAHAB HELPS US SEE PEOPLE WITH GOD’S EYES. God saw the potential in Rahab. We walk by people every day with physical, mental, emotional, and social challenges. Jesus spent his time and ministry reaching out to these. Amazing things can happen if we can open our eyes and hearts to those same individuals. Compassion like this may cost us. It means an investment in time, money, work, patience, and maybe a loss of reputation. But life is not about getting but giving. (Matthew 16:24-26) Rahab experienced the amazing grace of God and became an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Only God knows the potential of those you encounter. Applying these lessons from the amazing life of Rahab will radically change your life and the lives of those around you. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

As I started writing this week's column a special news alert came across the T V screen: Another shooting. The first reports were six police officers shot with three reported dead on the streets of Baton Rouge, Louisiana in an ambush style attack. That makes six major attacks here and abroad, starting with Orlando, Florida in mid-June. Some other attacks included the Dallas, Texas police shooting, and the terrorist attack in Nice, France while thousands of innocent people were celebrating Bastille Day — comparable to our Fourth of July — when a lone terrorist plowed through the large crowd gathered to watch the fireworks. An ISIS media group said the French attacker was a "soldier." He left over 200 injured and 84 dead, while 18 are still fighting to live. Among the dead are at least ten children, the youngest being six months old. Secretary of State John Kerry said last week that we have ISIS on the run. Instead of opening his mouth he should open his eyes. All of these attacks were carried out by terrorists. Anyone who can take innocent lives for whatever reason, whether its retaliation or the craziness of "radical Islam," is nothing short of a terrorist and should be treated as such. Speaking of John Kerry and terrorism, another messy situation for the U.S. involves Turkey, a major ally in the fight against ISIS. Stepping back a few days, there was a major attempted coup carried out by at least 6,000 military, Justice Department and other government officials of Turkey. On Saturday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the U.S. to extradite U.S. based Turkish clerical Fethullah Gülen, who I might add has been receiving millions of dollars in U.S. federal funds to support his schools
5
The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area
located in Florida and Texas. The Turkish government is insinuating some of these funds are being used to promote terrorism in Turkey. My question is, "Why are we funding this guy?" In the meantime, Kerry is warning Turkey against "public insinuations" by Turkish Labor Minister Suleyman Soylu that the U.S. is behind this attempted coup. Frankly, I would absolutely put nothing past the current U.S. government, and if you think that's an overreaction take a good look at this administration's track record, starting with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In my opinion, Hillary Clinton led Barack Obama down the horrible path that started in Libya. The truth is Clinton's foreign policy helped launch ISIS, and anyone who knows the facts knows that. The Mideast is more unstable than ever before. Iran is on the edge of nuclear weapons and the Obama administration negotiated the deal that Iran got $150 billion, with John Kerry as the mouthpiece. For what? On to the B ernie Sanders sellout. It finally happened. This man was against the establishment, only to endorse Hillary Clinton as the Presidential nominee. How could he sell out his supporters? Especially to someone so corrupt. What would I have done? I would have walked away. The establishment's goal is to bring down Trump! Moving on to Donald Trump, he officially ann o u n c e d h i s Vi c e Presidential pick last Saturday at 10:00 a.m. He and Indiana Governor Mike Pence made their first appearance at that time. The announcement was slated for last Friday at 11:00 a.m. but was delayed because of the attempted Turkish coup. Speaker Ryan gave his seal of approval by saying, "I can't think of a better man than Mike Pence." Mike Pence has an ex-
cellent track record. He ser ved Indiana as Governor with distinction. Just some of his accomplishments include: • Indiana's labor force has increased by 186,000. • The private sector is way up. • They balanced the budget. • Bonds are rated AAA. (That's as good as it gets.) • Fewer people in Indiana are on unemployment (the second lowest in the nation). • Indiana has the largest school choice. • They are rated first in infractructure. Those are just a few of his accomplishments in Indiana. Mike Pence is nothing less than impressive, and the stakes for our country couldn't be higher. We can't afford another four years of Obama-ism, a policy of leading from behind. Pence described himself as a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order. It will be interesting to watch the GOP convention starting on Monday in Cleveland, Ohio. And last but not least, I was asked to look into a proposed State of Illinois Muslim Advisory Council. In checking it out, this is what I found. The creation of an Illinois Muslim Amer ic an Adv is or y Council bill has not been signed, but in fact, it is one of more than 400 bills awaiting Illinois Gov. R au ne r ' s s i g natu re. Rauner's office said he is reviewing this bill. Hopefully this information answered the questions

Simply Scrumptious Cheesecake Some years back I decided to make the perfect cheesecake. You know, one that was creamy, delicious, and looked good (meaning no cracks in the center), all at the same time. One year and 20 pounds later I finally figured it out. Ironically, as it turned out, cheese cake making was not at all as hard as I made it out to be. Most cheesecakes are easier to make from scratch than other cakes. Now I have two rules on cheesecakes: 1. The more elaborate the recipe the more you should distrust it! 2. Simplicity is the cheesecake's only secret. In preparing the springform pan I always use butter, then a thin coating of crumbs. I usually use finely ground vanilla wafers. You can also use some finely ground nuts added to the cookies. My favorite cheesecake recipes are below. You can top both of these cheesecakes with your favorite crushed fruit, especially strawberries or blackberries. Remember a little bit goes a long way.
A Simple Cream Cheese Cheesecake 1 lb. or 2 (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese 2/3 cup sugar 3 eggs
1 tsp. grated lemon rind 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Generously butter bottom and sides of a springform or heavy cake pan (2 T. for a large pan). This recipe works best with a 7” springform pan. Add a coating of crumbs or finely chopped nuts, using ½ cup for a 7 to 8” pan or 1 cup for a 9 to 10” pan. Shake crumbs gently, turning pan for even coating. Preheat oven to 300°F. Have all ingredients at room temperature. Mix ingredients one at a time in electric mixer or food processor, just enough to thoroughly blend. Begin by cutting cream cheese into chunks and beating until soft and creamy. Beat in sugar bit by bit, then eggs, one by one. Follow with remaining ingredients. Don't overbeat. Finally, rotate pan in several quarter turns to settle batter and release air bubbles. Bake at 300°F for 50 minutes or until just set. (You may get better results by lowering oven temperature because cheesecakes bake best at lower temperatures for longer times.) Test doneness by giving cake a soft shake. Cake is done when there is still a faint, jellylike quiver to its center (just set). It will continue to bake after being removed from oven, so don't overbake. Remove pan to wire rack and let cake rest 1 hour before releasing from springform sides. (Cake will start to pull away from sides when it is ready to unmold.) Cover cheesecake loosely with wax paper, not plastic wrap, then put in refrigerator to chill a few hours before serving.

most vulnerable citizens. A revitalized Illinois is important for our future too. Getting our fiscal house in order will help get our public debt under control so government does not become a burden for our children and grandchildren. At the heart of the long budget stalemate is an argument that the budget and reforms should not be tied together. In reality, they are
letters to the editor
Reform Needed Dear Editor, I am hopeful the “stopgap” budget approved last month will be a bridge to a full-year budget agreement that does not raise taxes. The plan passed on June 30 provides a surprising increase from last year’s funding for K-12 education in the upcoming school year, but it only provides six months of funding for human services, public safety and other state programs and services. That’s unacceptable and, most of all, the math does not seem to work. We need a 12month budget - as required by our state constitution that does not spend more money than we take in. Springfield often forgets about the 12 million Illinois citizens and focusses instead on itself. In this case, placating the public in order to make it through the next election and knowing that this stop-gap might just result in another tax increase. For too long the motivation has been politics rather than the people. Growing government through overspending, overtaxing and overregulating hurts Illinois. It’s the primary reason why Illinois’ economy continues to struggle and why the state is so deeply in debt. Illinois needs structural reforms to how it conducts public business and in the taxation and regulation of the free market economy. It’s critical that we implement pro-business and pro-jobs policies. the economy will help get our state’s fiscal house in order. It means opportunity for employers and employees, thereby creating more revenue for government to provide the critical services for our
linked because they impact each other at the fundamental financial level and they impact the lives of Illinois citizens. The road to opportunity and prosperity is clear. It includes structural reforms to improve our business/jobs climate and government reforms. It means ending the failed policies of the past and being honest with the citizens about how much money we have to
spend. Let’s take the opportunity the “stop-gap” budget agreement presents and work together to restore confidence in state government, revitalize our economy, inspire hope and create opportunity for everyone. Kyle McCarter State Senator – 54th District Illinois
