First things first, here are t he hig hlig hts of t he Republican convention. All in all I thought it was packed full of great speakers with the exception of former Presidential candidate Ted Cruz, who, in my opinion, by not intentionally endorsing the GOP nominee Donald Trump as he had pledged, committed political suicide. I for one would never support him for anything! But back to the good parts of this four night historymaking event held in John Kasich's home state in Cleveland, Ohio which Gov. Kasich didn't attend. Shame on him. Trump, well known for his marketing expertise and branding, was on top of his game. Trump's clear message rang out throughout the four days: "Make America Great Again." On Monday the topic was, "How to make America Safe Again." On Tuesday the topic was, "Make America Work Again." On Wednesday the topic was, "Make America First Again." On Thursday the topic was, "Make America One Again." The lineup ranged from Reince Priebus, Chair of the Republican Nat iona l Committee, to the humble acceptance by Donald J. Trump. In total there were over 60 speakers that included Mr. Trump's wife Melania as well as his four children. The list went on and on, but an important factor over the entire convention was speaker Paul Ryan, which tells me that Trump will work with House Republicans and try to work with Democrats. John McCain, Mitt Romney, and the three Bushes were no-shows, along with John Kasich. In my opinion, that's
sad, because this election isn't about sour grapes but to "Make America Great Again." God knows we need to all get on that page. But even though the event was focused on the issues that should concern us all, the Clinton camp had to stir the pot by pointing out a couple of lines that were similar to Michelle Obama's that Melania Trump used. I have to say it wasn't the worst thing Melania's speech writer could have done, but my take on this is that if a few sentences or even a paragraph or two concerns you more than over 30,000 deleted emails that put our national security in jeopardy, you are the problem. So let's look back. In 2006 Daval Patrick said, "I am not asking anyone to take a chance on me. I'm asking you to take a chance on your own aspiration." In 2007 Barack Obama said, "I'm not just asking you to take a chance on me. I'm also asking you to take a chance on your own aspirations." Where's the uproar! But speaking of uproar, on the eve of the Democratic Convention, it's come to the surface DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is in big trouble, leaving her under pressure to resign. It's alleged that close to 20,000 emails sent and received by DNC staff members were released Friday by WikiLeaks. Many of those emails made it clear that the DNC was in Clinton's pocket from the very beginning. If they would have listened to me they would have already known that. If this isn't corruption and unethical behavior, I don't know what is. If you can't protect your emails, how can you protect
America? It's true that Bernie Sanders started off 50% behind Hillary Clinton. (Remember the super delegate debate?) Or course he did! But keep in mind that at the end he was only three million votes behind. In the grand scheme of things, had he had a fair shot, that's not much. So what's next? A rigged election? I would put nothing past this current administration, as well as Bill and Hillary Clinton. I found Senator Sanders' comments on Sunday morning about Hillary and Tim Kaine interesting. When asked on Meet the Press about Hillary, he never said he trusted her. What he said was, "I don't trust Donald Trump." It was apparent there's still some burn against Hillary. But who can blame him! As per her vice presidential pick, Tim Kaine, Sanders said, "His politics are not my politics," and said he would have preferred Elizabeth Warren. I find it interesting and this says it all: On the eve of the DNC Convention, Hillary Clinton is not looking good. She is in worse shape, according to the polls, than any other Democratic presidential candidate ever. People don't like her. In closing on conventions in this week's column, prior to press time, the DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned. Until next week! To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Last week we covered cheesecakes and my quest to accomplish the perfect creation. But I would not feel right about the sharing of my conquest without sharing an amazing story, along with the recipe for Lindy's Famous Cheesecake, which, according to rumors is nothing more or less than the famous New York Cheesecake. As for me, I like them both. It's alleged the original Lindy's Cheesecake recipe came from a fabled roadhouse on the outskirts of New Orleans. However, the restaurant named Lindy's is no more, so it would be hard to verify. By the time it closed, its sole purpose was to provide tourist entertainment for people that wanted the ambiance of the old French Quarter and its cast of characters, and apart from cheesecake, no other recipes survived from the famous restaurant. But let me assure you this is the richest cheesecake I've ever had. I wish I could promise the recipe below was the original one, but I can assure you I don't know what could be better.
A Version of Lindy's Legendary Cheesecake
Filling: 1¼ lb. or 2½ (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese, room temperature 3/4 cup sugar 1½ T. flour 1 tsp. grated lemon rind
1 tsp. grated orange rind Few drops vanilla 3 eggs plus 1 yolk 2 T. heavy cream
Crust: 1/2 cup finely pulverized dry cake or cookie crumbs
2 T. sweet butter
Preheat oven to 300°F. Generously butter 7-inch springform pan and coat with as many cake or cookie crumbs as will adhere. Gently pour out excess. Prepare filling by beating cream cheese until creamy and smooth. Slowly beat in sugar, and when well incorporated, beat in flour, lemon and orange rind, vanilla, eggs, and heavy cream. Pour filling into prepared pan and bake 1 hour. After 50 minutes, start to check cake; it will be done when center just barely quivers. Remove to rack and let cool, removing sides of springform pan after an hour. Then let cool in refrigerator a few hours before serving. As for the crust, I keep it simple. I just butter my pan and generously coat it with some clean flavored crumbs, like about a 1/2 pound of pulverized choice sugar cookies or vanilla wafers. ***

speakOUT letters to the editor
FBI Report On Hillary Clinton Emails Dear Editor, July 5 was one of the saddest days of my life. It ranked right up there with the death of my parents and two of my sons. I was shocked when I listened to the head of the FBI, James Comey, give his report on Hillary Clinton's email usage where she compromised the security of our nation by using her personal server for classified information that was against the law punishable by a fine and a ten year prison sentence. Comey starts his report by criticizing Clinton's disregard for those laws. He stated she had definitely violated those laws. She had tried to delete emails in an effort to conceal them. He stated that she had acted carelessly by her actions. At least seven of those emails were classified as top secret. It seemed that Comey was going to recommend she be indicted. There was a lot more said in that report. You can
Google the entire report by s e arching "FBI rep or t Clinton." At this point Comey shifted gears. He acknowledged that there was evidence that her personal computer had been hacked at some time. Then after all these violations and the possibility Clinton had compromised the security of our country, he backed off and said that she had no intent to expose our nation to danger. Therefore he was recommending she not be indicted. He also indicated that if anyone else like you or me had done this, we would be faced with a prison term. It seems the laws of this nation apply to only you and me. Many people in the political arena have stated that the laws of our country do not apply to the Clintons but they do apply to the rest of us. It seems this has been true throughout the Clintons' career. Can anyone tell me why they are above the law? This is just one instance but
they have many events that go back to the days they were in Arkansas. They have total disregard for the laws of our country. Bill Clinton lied under oath when he was president and later admitted he had. He was impeached as a result but stayed in office until the end of his term. Hillary would give Obama a run for his money when it comes to lying. Would someone tell me why anyone would want to put the future of our nation in the hands of someone like Hillary Clinton. Really! Have we sunk that far? Larry McCaskey Centralia, Illinois _________________ Send your letters to the editor to: Shopper’s Weekly-Speak Out, P.O. Amazing Faith The scriptures reveal that sometimes God is amazed. He was amazed that there was no intercessor to stand in the gap for the nation of Israel. (Isaiah 59:16) God was so impressed with ancient Job that he boasted to Satan about him. (Job 1:8) Jesus was so amazed at a Roman centurion’s message that he replied to the crowd which followed him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel.” (Luke 7:1-10) The centurion’s faith amazed Jesus. Let’s examine his faith and see how we c a n d e v e l op t h i s amazing faith in God. THE CENTURION HAD A LOVE FOR HIS SERVANT. “And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die. So, when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Jesus to come and heal his servant.” (Luke 7:1-3) It was unusual for a Roman centurion to have such compassion for a Jewish servant. He was willing to risk his reputation to ask Jesus to heal him. The Holy

Spirit reveals that “faith works through love.” (Galatians 5:5-6) Bob Pierce visited an island off the coast of Korea to see the condition of hurting, hungry children. He was so moved that he wrote in the margin of his Bible, “Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.” He began a ministry called Samaritan’s Purse that cares for needy people throughout the world. God’s compassion will mobilize your faith to bold action. THE CENTURION HA D LOV E F OR GOD’S PEOPLE. The Jewish elders went to Jesus on the centurion’s behalf, “saying that the one for whom he should do this was deserving, for he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue.” (Luke 7:1-5) Paul said, “To the Jew first.” (Romans 2:7-11) There is a promise for those who pray for and love Jerusalem. (Psalm
122:6-7) “Faith without works is dead.” (James 2:17) The centurion was generous to God’s work and people. THE CENTURION’S HUMILIT Y GOT JESUS’ ATTENTION. He sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof . . . Just speak the word.” (Luke 7:6-7) James tells us, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) The centurion’s attitude was unlike the proud Syrian general who was healed of leprosy by Elisha. (II Kings 5) The centurion wasn’t proud nor demanding. He humbled himself before the Lord. THE CENTURION’S KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLE OF AUTHORITY HELPED HIM RELEASE AMAZING FAITH. “But say the word and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority having soldiers under me. And I say to one, “’Go.’ And he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this.’ And he does it.’ When
Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him . . . and said . . . ‘I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel.’” (Luke 7:7-9) The centurion believed in Jesus’ authority. He was saying, “Jesus, just speak the word and it will be d one !” Je sus w as amazed at his faith. When the centurion’s friends returned, they found his ser vant healed. Billy Graham said, “The object of your faith must be Christ. Not faith in ritual, not faith in sacrifices, not faith in morals, not faith in your self – not faith in anything but Christ!” Believe God’s Word and amazing faith will develop. Peter walked on water at the word of Jesus. Step out of your boat on the Word of the L ord and rel e a s e amazing faith. Understand and exercise the spiritual authority the Lord has given you as a father, a leader, an intercessor, and a believer in Jesus and release amazing faith. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You face the possibility of raising your relationship to another level. However, your partner might demand that you make promises for which you’re not sure you’re ready. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) As changes continue, expect things to get a little more hectic at your workplace. An unexpected travel opportunity could open new career prospects. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Confront the person who caused your hurt feelings and demand a full explanation for his or her actions. You’ll not only recover your self-esteem, but you’ll also gain the respect of others. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That former friend you thought you’d cut out of your life is still affecting other relationships. Counter his or her lies with the truth.
