South Central Transit Sara Nollman, Assistant Managing Director of South Central Transit, has worked at South Central Transit (SCT) since 2010. She was hired in as the HR Director and was recently promoted to the Assistant Managing Directors position. Sara has seen significant changes in the operations of SCT in the last 6 years. SCT is the IDOTdesignated general public transportation provider

in six counties (Marion, Clinton, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin & Perry) in south central Illinois. There has been an expansion of services in each of the counties, which includes the implementation of inter-county shuttles. The shuttles connect all 6 counties enabling customers to travel from one county to the other. This expansion has been beneficial to those who live in one county and work in

another or who live in one county but the medical facility they need to get to is in another county. SCT’s ridership continues to increase each year. SCT was recently recognized by IDOT as being one of the top transit systems in Illinois. SCT is getting ready to release a new website that will be more user friendly in the next couple of weeks. The website will have all the up to date information about our services, shuttle stops and routes, which you will be able to access

July 27, 2016 from your mobile devices. Sara lives in Centralia with her husband, JD and their 3 children.

did you know? Though women who entered the workforce during World War II were crucial to the war effort, their pay continued to lag far behind their male counterparts: Female workers rarely earned more than 50 percent of male wages.

The Centralia Recreation Complex is headed up by a wellqualified, committedto-excellence woman, Executive Director Sonya Germann. Sonya has been with the Complex since 1995. Originally hired as the aquatic director, after four years she was promoted to facility direc-

Salem Township Hospital For 74 years, Salem Township Hospital has served the Salem community’s healthcare needs. In addition, they have continued to be an employer of choice for Salem and surrounding towns. As Director of Human Resources and Marketing at STH for 11 years, Diane Boswell sees this on a daily basis. “We receive dozens of applications for employment every week. That says so much for the Hospital and its current staff as well as the community. Our employees are amazing. They bring a passion and dedication along with a remarkable skill set and level of professionalism to our patients that I would not hesitate to put up against the staff at any size hospital. Our patient satisfaction surveys reflect this. It is such an honor to be a part of this environment every day.” Boswell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Education and Development from SIU. She joined the staff of Salem Township Hospital after serving as the HR Manager at Littelfuse, a manufacturing facility in Centralia that had closed. Boswell considers

Human Resources to be an exciting field as regulations and employment trends are ever-changing. “The regulations that have been rolled out for health insurance have been the most challenging issue faced in HR in many years. Much of my time is spent ensuring that our health plan continues to be compliant with the Government’s timeline, and seeking ways to control the costs without sacrificing the coverage for our employees.” Boswell is also responsible for marketing Salem Township Hospital, and that also has changed significantly. “Even when I started, STH had a website. But as technology has improved, so has our presence on the internet. Our newest upgrade will be rolled out in the next couple of weeks, with much more information available and timelier updates. We are now on Facebook and are working on promoting STH in other ways as well.” Much of the marketing aspect includes community participation, with one of our largest events being their participation in the Little Egypt Parade.

Daine Boswell In the 11 years she has been at STH, the Hospital has been in a continuous pattern of growth. Now offering more services and the addition of physician practices and clinics has lead to more jobs. With the 2009 addition to the hospital, and soon the opening of a new inpatient wing and physician clinic, Boswell and her staff will be doing their part to give the community something in which to be proud.

Home Source Warehouse

Nicole and Mary Jane Richard

Home Source Warehouse, located north of Mt. Vernon on Route 37, was started by Mary Jane Richard and her husband James in 2009. With Mary Jane's former retail back-

ground and James' experience in the furniture industry, they felt it was time to begin their family business. They chose to offer the warehouse concept with low overhead that would

give their customers quality stylish furniture at every day low prices. In addition, being open just three days a week (Thursdays 10-6, Fridays 10-6 and Saturdays 10-3, or by appointment) and most all of the work being done by family members help give customers the best value. Teenage daughter Nicole has grown up in the furniture business and is becoming more involved in the business each year. Mary Jane said, "I truly look forward to going to work every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Even though it seems I am there almost every day, unloading trucks, putting furniture together, rearranging the floor and meeting

someone that cannot make it in on our regular hours, I love doing what I am doing. As a truly family run business it's important to us that our customers are treated right and receive the very best service and price." At Home Source Warehouse, whether you're looking for living room, bedroom, mattresses, accent pieces or wall hangings, you'll be pleasantly surprised and always find something unique. Go see what they have to offer at Home Source Warehouse, 17266 North Illinois Highway 37, just 4 miles north of Mt. Vernon on Highway 37. Mary Jane says, "Our family will appreciate your business."

Tips For Women Juggling A Family And A Career

The days when single income households were the norm are long gone, as nowadays both Mom and Dad must work in order to make ends meet. That reality has left many women juggling the obligations of motherhood with the obligations of a successful career. Such a juggling act is seldom easy, and many mothers find themselves neglecting one obligation for the benefit of another. The following are a few tips to make balancing work and family a little easier. • Share the responsibilities. While the days of the single-income household may be a thing of the past, many of the conventions of those days remain. Women may still feel the responsibility to cook family meals, clean up after the children and make it to all of their children's sporting events or other school-related events. But those responsibilities should be shared so women can ensure they're giving both their careers and families the attention each deserves. Devise a schedule where both parents tackle such responsibilities equally so each parent knows when they have some wiggle room. For example, if your husband routinely cooks on Tuesdays, then you know you won't need to rush home on Tuesday night and you might be able to stay at the office a little later to work on

a project or catch up on work. Such sharing and scheduling can considerably reduce the stress of juggling a family and a career. • Juggling a family and a career is often stressful, and stress can have a very adverse effect on your health. Women with high stress levels are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. But the American Psychological Association notes the positive impact of exercise as a means to alleviating stress, citing studies that have shown that physically active people have lower rates of anxiety and depression than people who are sedentary. It's easy to become irritable when stressed, and no mother wants to be irritable in the presence of her children. Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is a great way to alleviate the stress of juggling a family and a career, and you can even incorporate your family into your exercise routine, going for nightly walks after dinner or playing with your children in the yard. • Stay involved with your child's school. Many mothers find staying active with their children's school is a great opportunity for them to bond with their kids and keep abreast of developments at their school. Such involvement can be minimal, such as attending a

monthly luncheon with kids or agreeing to be a chaperone on one or two class trips per year. Such events are typically scheduled months in advance, so you should have ample time to arrange a break from the office without neglecting your professional responsibilities. • Take advantage of work-from-home policies. As technology has advanced, many companies have become much more lenient with regard to employees working from home. If your company allows you to work from home, even if it's only once per week, then take advantage of that offer. This can provide more time with your kids, it will likely save you money on childcare, and you are certain to appreciate the opportunity to skip your daily commute, even if it is only once a week or a couple of times per month.

• Plan ahead. Looking ahead is another way to make juggling a family and a career easier. Plan meals in advance to cut down on preparation time when it's your night to cook. This can involve placing foods in a slow cooker in the morning or preparing part of the meal in advance so it's ready to go in the oven the moment you arrive home. Another way to plan ahead is to look at kids' school schedules and plan trips during the school year when school won't be in session. A threeday weekend is a perfect opportunity to plan a getaway to a nearby locale where the whole family can relax and reconnect without the pressures of daily life. Juggling a family and career is not always easy, but there are ways that today's mothers can raise a happy family and still have a successful career.

Saving As A Single Parent Saving money can be hard for any parent, but especially so for parents who are raising their children in single-parent households. Single parents face hurdles that parents in dual-parent households may not encounter, and many of those hurdles involve finances. Worrying about savings can have a negative effect on single parents. In the 2014 “LoveFamilyMoney” survey commissioned by the financial services provider Allianz, 76 percent of single parents said preparing for both retirement and their child’s college expenses causes them a great deal/some stress. That is in spite of 41 percent of singleparent families reporting that they had excellent or above average knowledge of financial planning. Those figures highlight the struggle even the most financially savvy single parents face when trying to save money, much less the dilemma faced by single parents who are not as knowledgeable about money management. Finding room for savings can be tough for single parents already working with limited budgets, but single parents who want to start saving more may find that some simple strategies can help them grow their savings and build more solid foundations for their futures and their

children’s futures. • Find ways to scale back. Just because you might have grown accustomed to something does not mean you cannot live without it. Scaling back on luxury expenditures like cable or satellite television and smartphone data plans can save you a substantial amount of money each month. Cut the cord with costly cable or satellite plans in favor of more affordable streaming services. If that’s too great a sacrifice, downsize your television package to something more basic and much less expensive. Rather than purchasing an unlimited data plan from your mobile phone provider, choose a less costly plan that limits your data access. You may discover that adjusting to less data makes you less reliant on your smartphone, which might end up being a blessing in disguise. • Set up automatic contributions. Setting up automatic contributions to a savings account is a great way to guarantee you make monthly deposits. Direct a portion of your paycheck into a savings account rather than direct depositing it entirely into your checking account. You may be surprised at how quickly you adjust to having less money in your checking account. • Enroll in an employer-sponsored retirement

program. If you are not already contributing to an employer-sponsored retirement account, then enroll in one if your employer has made that option available. Such contributions are typically pre-tax (you will pay tax on the money down the road when you begin to withdraw it), meaning they won’t affect your take-home pay too significantly. In addition, enrolling in such a program can help relieve any stress you may have about financing your retirement. • Make your own meals. Single parents juggling a career with their dual roles as mom and dad may be too exhausted to take on dinner duties at

the end of each weekday. But making your own meals rather than going out or ordering in can save substantial amounts of money that can then be directed to college or retirement savings accounts. If necessary, use a slow cooker to prepare meals in the morning so everything is ready when you arrive home at night. Or map out meals for the week on weekends and prepare as many as possible on Saturday or Sunday so all you need to do is reheat them when arriving home at night. Single parents struggling to save money may find that the simplest solutions are also the most effective.

Steps To Achieve A Better Work-Life Balance

Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Living a fulfilling life often involves finding the right work-life balance, and the following tips can help make that possible. • Establish your priorities. Make a list of the things that are most important to you. Having this list put on paper can make goals more attain-

able. Think about the main things you want to focus on in life and go from there. • Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a worklife balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your well-being. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork. • Don’t procrastinate. Stick to your schedule so you don’t feel stressed and as if you are constantly rushing around. Complete one item before you move on to the next. • Communicate effectively with your bosses. Be honest with your bosses or colleagues if you feel like work is negatively impacting your home life. Supervisors may be flexible and receptive to feedback if it means keeping good employees happy and productive. Bosses may allow you to work from home or be willing to arrange a flex schedule.

• Unplug at home. When spending time at home with your loved ones, disconnect from your devices, especially those that connect you to work. Making yourself too available for work can be a detriment to your health and family. • Divide your responsibilities. Allow family members to tackle some chores or other household duties so it will free up more time to spend together.

• Schedule a mental break each day. Give yourself time to perform one activity per day that you really enjoy. This will help you recharge and manage stress even further. Activities may include sports, hobbies or exercise. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

Questions To Ask When Looking For An Afterschool Program staff members are and how conducive to doing homework the environment is.

Many of today’s working professionals grew up in singleincome households where only one of their parents went to work each day. But that oncecommon dynamic is now largely a thing of the past, as economic necessity has driven both moms and dads to continue their careers even after they have had children. That reality has led many working parents to lean heavily on afterschool programs to serve as safe havens that provide structure for their kids while mom and dad are still at work. Choosing an after-school program is a decision many parents find difficult, but there are some questions parents can ask during their searches for programs that should make those decisions easier.

Can I tour and observe the facility? When considering a particular afterschool program for their children, parents should ask to tour the facility, paying specific attention to the areas of the facility where their youngsters will spend the bulk of their time. Do the classrooms look clean? Are the materials up-to-date? Is the playground equipment safe and well-maintained? Well-maintained facilities with new supplies and equipment can make the program more enjoyable and safer for kids. Parents also should ask to spend some time observing the facility when it is abuzz with activity. Such observation can give parents an idea of what their kids’ afternoons will be like should they enroll in the program. Stay out of the way, but watch to see how engaged kids and

What is the program schedule? Schedule is a significant issue for working parents, many of whom want a program that is open on holidays when schools are closed. Flexibility also is a concern for working parents, some of whom may need a facility that is open before school starts. Parents also may want a facility that allows youngsters to attend just a few days a week, which might make certain programs that require parents to commit to full weeks less enticing. When discussing the facility schedule with staff members, be sure to get as specific a schedule as possible, inquiring about any additional costs associated with extending the typical schedule as well. What are the activities available to the kids? Many afterschool programs provide more than just a place for kids to sit and do their homework until their folks come to pick them up. Ask staff members at the facility how big a role activities play in their programs. Many programs try to offer

an array of activities that range from academic programs to athletic events and more. A wide range of programs can increase the chances that youngsters will find activities that pique their interests and make the afterschool program more enjoyable. How are staff members vetted? Parents also may want to ask about the program’s hiring practices. Ask about the background checks performed on staff members and if the facility requires any specific certifications for staff who will be dealing directly with children. When asking about hiring practices, parents also may want to inquire about the ratio of staff members to children. The smaller the ratio, the more attention youngsters will receive. Facilities with an especially high ratio of staff to children may not be able to provide the type of environment parents want for their children. Finding an afterschool program requires parents to exercise their due diligence. Parents who can be patient and learn as much about facilities as possible are more likely to find the right fit for their children.

Managing Your Money Effectively

The roles played by women have changed dramatically over the years. Modern women now wear many hats, one of which is money manager. That's true for women managing their personal finances or those overseeing their family's finances. But managing finances can be intimidating for anyone, regardless of gender. Oftentimes, a careful assessment of your attitude toward money is a great way to make the process of managing your finances a lot less stressful. A great first step when managing your finances is to identify any concerns you have about money. Being able to pinpoint the particulars will help you develop a plan of action. For example, if you want to invest in stocks but don't know a bull from a

bear market, acknowledging this shortcoming can help you learn the necessary facts to get started. Once such concerns have been addressed, you're likely to feel more comfortable and confident about managing your money and can start taking steps to do just that. • Think positively and value your strengths. Embracing your strengths, even if those strengths have little to do with money management, can help you gain control of your finances. Perhaps you are not a financial whiz but your networking skills have left you with a vast network of friends and family in various professions. You may be able to use those connections to gain access to experts in the financial field who can guide you through the questions you may have.

One likes bright colors, glitter, sparkle and high style arrangements, the other likes a natural look with soft colors and simplicity. One loves to purchase the purses and the

other is the jewelry/scarf girl. Since their purchase of the shop in April 2012, they have done some remodeling and updating to the store, including increasing the selection of retail items available to shoppers. They enjoy creating beautiful silk arrangements and wreaths, in both everyday items and seasonal. They specialize in designing sympathy arrangements and memory items while incorporating personal mementos into the design. Wedding design is also a large part of their work. Their delivery service is top-notch for all requests, whether it’s sending flowers, balloon bouquets, fruit and gift baskets, or candy bouquets. The entire staff at The Flower Shop Hallmark is aimed at creating something beautiful for every customer and going the extra mile. They would love the opportunity to work with you!

Managing Your Money Effectively (continued from page 34)

• Know your current financial status. Feigning ignorance is not the way to get started. It is important to honestly assess your financial situation so you can effectively handle those finances going forward. Take stock of your income, expenditures and what you have in savings. Keep abreast of any changes in your accounts and stay current with business news and issues that may play a direct or indirect role on your finances. • Get talking about your concerns. Talk to other women in similar situations. You may find that you share the same concerns. Discussing common concerns or financial strategies can help you in your own endeavors. • Continue working, even if it's only parttime. A study by the Women's Institute For a Secure Retirement found

that a college-educated 25-year-old female will earn $500,000 less than a male counterpart in a similar position over her lifetime because of sporadic employment associated with caring for family, including children and aging parents. That worries many young women who have previously thought about taking time off from work to raise families. Even if you may want to scale down your work schedule, you may not want to completely remove yourself from the workforce so you can remain in touch and current. • Consult with an estate planner. The earlier you start the better off you will be with regard to planning for the future. It is not an admission of weakness if you rely on the help of financial experts to guide you in the right direction.

We salute all the hard-working dedicated women... and are here for all your insurance needs!

Addressing financial concerns is a good first step toward controlling your finances.

did you know? Pioneering aviator and inspirational figure, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and set many other records throughout her career. Her disappearance in 1937 during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe devastated admirers across the United States and around the world. Her public career lasted less than a decade (from 1928 to 1937), but she used her fame to promote two causes dear to her: the advancement of commercial aviation and the advancement of women.
