A Rose by Ichiro's Name Pete Rose follows me on Twitter now, or at least he retweeted something I wrote about him, and that's good enough for me. I'm also friends on Facebook with Jenny Mollen and Willie Nelson, and depending on which generation you talk to, nobody knows anyone I just talked about. (You can follow me too @sportingview ... and unlike here, I am a man of few words there.) In case you missed the past two or three decades, Pete Rose was a real son of a gun who hustled and played baseball with the sort of tenacity that only a few other players and marauding bands of Vikings could understand or match. He is Major League Baseball's undisputed hit king. He is not in the Hall of Fame because he was banned from baseball for betting on baseball games, something every single baseball player has known not to do since the Taft
administration. The guy completely blew it, yet the man persists to somehow remain in the news. How many other Hall of Fames can this guy be inducted to? It seems like every other week he is inducted into the Reds' Hall of Fame, Cincinnati's Hall of Fame, Ohio's Hall of Fame, the guy down the street's Hall of Fame ... Pokemon Go should make him one of their monsters because he has a statue or plaque in just about every major park in the Buckeye State. He has to have several hundred Rotary Club coffee mugs. Then along comes Ichiro Suzuki. By the time you read this, Ichiro will have reached the 3,000 hit mark in Major League Baseball. If you were to add up the hits he made in Japan with the hits he made here, mathematics show that he has more professional base hits than Pete Rose. On a slow news day, there are reputable news organizations that will
make a case for Ichiro being the all-time hit king. That is, of course, totally preposterous. I know guys who bet on Wiffleball games ... sure, it takes them out of the running for Cooperstown, but they get paid, and I know guys who throw perfect games every time I'm not in the opposing team's lineup. Does that make them pros, worthy of being compared to Koufax and Walter Johnson? Tony Lazzeri, the Hall of Fame second baseman for the Yankees (who completely disrespect him, by the way), once hit a kajillion home runs in the minor leagues. Is he the home run king? Ichiro is all class and truly, I love watching him play. He is a Hall of Famer, but he is not the hit king. That man is Pete Rose. This is probably not the last time I say this, but it's good to forgive. It's time for Pete Rose to enter the Hall or be allowed to participate in Old Timer's or Cincinnati Wiffleball games. No offense to Ichiro, but it is well past time for our pastime to set the record straight once and for all. LEGISLATORS VISIT MURRAY CENTER
Pictured (L to R) are: Rob Winchester, Dominique Manley, Steve Tomaszewski, Susan Watson, C.J. Baricevic, Rep. Charlie Meier, Joe Platt, and Rita Winkeler. The Murray Parents' Association sponsored a federal legislator's day on Wednesday, August 3. Attending the event were Dominique Manley, Staff Assistant for Congressman Mike Bost, Rob Winchester, Senior Advisor for Senator Mark Kirk, Susan Watson, Staff Assistant for Senator Richard Durbin, Steve Tomaszewski, Senior Advisor for Congressman Shimkus, C.J Baricevic, who is the Democratic candidate for the Illinois 12th District, and his assistant Joe Platt. Also attending were State Representative Charlie Meier, State Repres ent ative Ter r i Bryant, JB Meier, and Sean Davis, Department of Human Services Legislative Liaisons. Murray Center Director Mary Ann Smith led the tour first visiting Elm Cottage with the group. The group visited a resident's room as a mother explained how valuable the services at Murray Center have been f o r h e r d a u g h t e r. Occupational Therapist Lori Demijan explained many of the services that Murray Center has such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy; registered dietitians; and dental care. Phil, a Murray Center individual, showed the group his assisted communication device as speech therapist Celeste Stratemeyer explained how Phil's vocabulary continues to grow each year using this device. The group then visited Apple Cottage, meeting several individuals and touring the cottage garden where green beans, tomatoes, peppers and flowers are growing. The garden was planted and is cared for by the residents of Apple Cottage with help from the staff. The produce is added to the daily diets of the residents. Several cottages

CENTRALIA PROJECT PRIDE JUNE WINNERS Project Pride is a seasonal neighborhood recognition program sponsored by Keep Centralia Beautiful. The recognition is presented to homes and businesses that have made a notable contribution to their neighborhood through beautification and upkeep of their property. The City of Centralia has been divided into eight sections. One home in each section, along with one local business, will be presented with this honor during the months of May through December. This award is to those contributing to the beautification of their neighborhood. This year’s committee will make their tours around the city to choose the homes and one business each month. The homes chosen will be provided a sign for their yard for that month.
Thank you in advance for making a dedicated commitment to this program and your neighborhood. More people are taking pride in their yards and neighborhoods by putting time and effort into making their property a true asset to the community. After their hard work, they can enjoy the fruits of their toil and perhaps be recognized for helping make Centralia beautiful one neighborhood at a time. Centralia Clean and Green recently chose the properties pictured below as winners in the Project Pride program. Please feel free to call MiMi at 618-322-4483 with the names and addresses of individuals you feel deserve this award. Thanks for helping Keep Centralia Beautiful. Pictured are the June 2016 winners.

at Murray Center now have large gardens. The group then met some residents who were enjoying the therapeutic swimming pool at Murray Center. A meet and greet was held in the gymnasium at Murray Center after the group saw the ice cream shop. Rita Winkeler, President of the Murray Parents Association (MPA), gave a short presentation on the importance of federal legislation that preserves the rights of parents/ guardians and ensures disabled individuals have the choice of large congregate care facilities such as Murray Center. Rep. Charlie Meier then spoke about the importance of Murray Center to southern Illinois as it is the only facility in central and southern Illinois that serves the needs of severely disabled residents. Each representative spoke about their experience visiting the center. Rob Winchester, from Sen. Kirk's office, said he had never visited an SODC (State Operated Developmental Center) and that he was really moved by the passion of the
staff and parents. He spoke of the college atmosphere in the cottages and about how bright and cheerful the rooms were. He said he was honored to be part of keeping a center like Murray Center open, as he saw how much freedom the center allows the individuals while they are surrounded by love and care. C.J. Baverico said the center was “just remarkable”, mentioning that he had toured many larger and smaller facilities and had never seen one as well kept, with such dedicated staff as he saw at Murray Center. All those touring the Center thanked the Murray Parents' Association for the visit, and encouraged the MPA to invite more legislators to visit the center. Many of those visiting previously had no idea what services were provided by Murray Center that could not be provided in the community for the individuals at Murray Center with their very specialized needs. The visit ended with ref reshments, and the parents/guardians, along with some of the residents, shared time with the legislative visitors.

Last week I shared a recipe for Basic Pie Crust as well as a recipe for Nostalgic Baked Custard Pie. This week's column continues with Fresh Strawberry Pie and Unequaled Pumpkin Pie, more of my favorites.
Fresh Strawberry Pie 1 single pie crust 1 cup fresh strawberries and 1½ cups water or 1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen unsweetened strawberries (with their juice or water to equal 2½ cups total)
1⅓ cups sugar 1/2 cup cornstarch 5 to 6 drops red food coloring (opt.) 3 T. lemon juice 2 cups whole, unsweetened strawberries (fresh or frozen)
Bake pie crust in preheated 425° oven 8 minutes. Cool on rack. Soften 1½ T. cream cheese with 1/4 tsp. milk. Spread smooth mixture evenly over baked crust to form "protective seal" from fruit juices. Reserve. In heavy saucepan, bring 1 cup fresh berries and 1½ cups water (or frozen berries equivalent, partially thawed) to boil. Mix sugar and cornstarch together; gradually stir into hot berries. Continue to boil, stirring constantly, 3 to 4 minutes, or until very thick and clear. Stir in red coloring if desired, until bright red; stir in lemon juice and mix well. Fold 2 cups whole berries into hot mixture and pour into prepared pie shell; refrigerate until serving time. Serve with dollop of whipped cream on each piece. Makes one generous 9" pie. Variation: Fresh Raspberry Pie. Substitute raspberries for strawberries; increase sugar to 1½ cups. Proceed according to recipe.
Unequaled Pumpkin Pie 1 single pie crust 3 eggs, separated into 2 batches (1 batch includes all yolks and 1 white; other batch contains 2 whites) 1 cup sugar 2 cups pumpkin, canned
1/2 tsp. salt 1½ tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ginger 1 tsp. allspice 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, freshly grated 1 cup half-and-half or evaporated milk
Do not bake pie crust. Preheat oven to 425°. Beat 3 egg yolks, plus one white, until frothy. Gradually add sugar and pumpkin. Add salt and spices; mix thoroughly. Stir in half-and-half. Beat 2 remaining egg whites until soft peaks form; fold into custard. Pour into prepared pie shell. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 375°; continue to bake 25 minutes, or until table knife inserted 1" from side comes out clean. Cool on rack. Serve warm or cold; top with whipped cream. Note: Add 1 T. flour and 1 T. light molasses if using homemade pumpkin. Makes one 9" pie. Variation: Sweet Potato or Winter Squash Pie. Substitute mashed sweet potato or winter squash for pumpkin. Add 1 T. flour and 1 T. light molasses. Proceed according to recipe. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Last week was a tough week for both Presidential candidates. Trump began last week with an attack on gold star parents Mr. and Mrs. Khizr Kahn, and he continued the week by saying he saw a video of a cash transaction involving Iran. As for Clinton, good old Hillary lied again to the American people on Sunday, July 30 during an interview with Chris Wallace. When asked about Director James Comey's statement about Hillary not telling the truth, she said she did not lie and nor did Comey say she lied. Whoops! In fact she did lie to Chris Wallace, not just once but two times, and Comey confirmed she lied. When coming back after the fact, in typical Clinton fashion, she stated that in the Wallace interview she may have short-circuited because she needed to clarify. Why not just tell the truth, that being, "I lied." "I lied." "I lied." But in normal Clintonian style, when caught, deny, deny, deny. But following through on the Clinton Machine, it looks like Tim Kaine, Clinton's Vice Presidential running mate, when questioned last Sunday about the tap dance that's going on with the $400 million exchange between the U.S. and Iran, said it wasn't ransom money and that Donald Trump is just trying to make something of this issue.
In my opinion, Kaine will be a good member of the Clinton Machine and follow their motto when caught: Deny. Deny. Deny. But speaking of Tim Kaine, he is typical of the Clintons, who have surrounded themselves with less than ethical individuals. Mr. Kaine took at least $160,000 in gifts when a Virginia governor. Even though in Virginia that's legal, how ethical is it? In my opinion, it's not. By the end of the week, Trump dropped in the polls and Clinton rose in the polls, but Clinton supporters shouldn't start doing the happy dance yet. In the end, Clinton will continue to be Clinton, and the concerns of most voters are her honesty and trustworthiness. For Trump, his problem is his enemy list and what comes out of his mouth at times, as well as the liberal spin machine twisting what he says. So where are we sitting as per the Presidential race? The truth is it's still too early to say, but I can assure you whoever is the next President, there always will be plenty to write about! On to Obama's $400 million Iran bribe to release U.S. prisoners! In other words, it was ransom money, most likely in the end paid to terrorists. Are these just rumors and accusations? Personally, I don't think so. Was this just a coincidence? Who really be-
lieves that? It just so happens that in January 2016 four Americans were released from an Iranian prison in exchange for seven Iranians in U.S. prisons. A fifth American prisoner was released separately, that being Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian. At the same time the U.S. airlifted the equivalent of $400 million U.S. money in various currencies to Tehran. GOP candidate Donald Trump called it an example of the administration's foreign policy failures. However, he wasn't alone. Sen. Marco Rubio, a long standing critic of the Iran talks, tweeted, "Obama sent a planeload of cash to Iran as ransom, as part of a deal on hostages. Just unreal." House Speaker Paul Ryan was among the many who seized the opportunity to expose the Obama administration again for what they really are, and that's certainly not transparent. Whatever happened to we don't negotiate with terrorists! A real precedent was set with this transaction. And if you're one of those that believe it wasn't ransom, I have a bridge to sell you for a dollar. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
The Power of the Tongue The tongue can produce terrible evil or tremendous good. The tongue can lash and libel or the tongue can liberate and express love. Recently two talk show hosts were fired because of their constant abusive tongue. Terrorists are fomenting mayhem and death through their rhetoric of hate. The Word of God tells us, “But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire and the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a world of wickedness corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself ” (James 3:1-12 NLT). Billy Graham has ministered life and peace to multiplied thousands throughout the world. He always has a kind and encouraging word. As his wife laid in a coma waiting for the Lord to call her home to heaven, Billy gave credit to his wife for most of the success he has had as an evangelist. “She is my best friend. I cannot imagine living one day without her,” he said. He is an example of Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Proverbs 12:18; 15:4) Jesus gave this warning, “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give an account thereof in the Day of Judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified and by thy words
thou shalt be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37 KJV). When the prophet Isaiah saw the glory and holiness of God he cried out, “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips” (Isaiah 6:1-7). When Isaiah confessed his sin, he was cleansed and the fire of God purified his lips. We need that same forgiveness and purifying of our lips. How can we use our tongue for tremendous good and reap eternal benefits? Notice seven things David tells us in Psalm 34. First – “PRAISE the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises” (verses 1-2). A praising tongue keeps you in God’s presence and releases the power and life of God. Second – PROCLAIM His greatness and good news of salvation to all. (Psalm 34:3; Isaiah 35:2-5; 51:16; 52:7; Romans 10:5-17) Third – PRAY “I prayed to the Lord and he answered me . . . those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy” (verses 4-7, 15-18). Pray in the Spirit. (Jude 20) Fourth – PARTAKE of the Lord personally and daily. “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (verse 8). David says that God’s Word is sweeter than honey. Jesus is the Bread of Life and the Living Water. Eat that which is good. (Isaiah 55) “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Fifth – PURIFY your speech. “Keep your tongue from speaking evil and lips from telling lies” (verses 1113). Like David, pray that God will set a guard over your mouth. May our speech be “seasoned with salt,” and always edifying. Sixth – PEACEMAKING. (verse 14) Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:9). They bring the kingdom of God to others on earth and they are citizens of God’s kingdom above. (James 3:17-18) Seventh – PROSPERING speech. (verse 12) How much we prosper in the areas of our life (III John 3) has much to do with our speech. Is your speech positive and faith filled? Are you using your tremendous tongue for good or evil? (Revelation 12:11) We have God’s promise of cleansing through the blood of Christ shed on the cross. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgiveness us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9).
Pray – “Lord, forgive me and cleanse my heart, my mind, my mouth, and my spirit. Put a guard before my mouth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ollowing back to school safety tips helps your child stay safe as a new school year begins. Going back to school is an exciting time for children as they look forward to entering the next grade level, seeing their friends and meeting new people. Yet it can also be a time of unforeseen dangers. By teaching children basic back to school rules and tips regarding their safety, they enter this exciting time with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe while enjoying this special time and throughout the school year. Safety Tips for Traveling To and From School Whether your child walks to school, rides a bike, takes a bus or you drive them in a car, reviewing the following safety tips with them makes traveling to and from school a safer experience. Walking to School — Tips for Parents If you feel your child does not have adequate pedestrian skills to walk to school, either walk with them until you are confident in their ability or make alternate arrangements for getting them to and from school. • If a child is young or entering a new school, walk the child to school until you are comfortable with them
walking by themselves. • Practice the route with your child if they are young or new to the school. • Make sure the route your child takes is safe and has a crossing guard at intersections. Walking to School — Tips for Children • Never take a short cut through a wooded area. Stay on the route you practiced with your parents. • Walk to school with a friend or a group of friends. • Wearing light or brightly colored clothing increases your visibility to drivers. Traveling by School Bus • Never step off the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop. • Always use the seat belt if the bus if equipped with them. • Do not move around in the bus. Stay sitting in your seat. • When leaving the school bus stay in view of the driver and always cross the street in front of the bus. • Even though traffic should stop for a school bus, always check both ways before crossing the street. Riding a Bike to School • Always wear an approved helmet when riding a bicycle. • Wearing clothing that is

bright and colorful makes it easier for drivers to see you. • Learn hand signals and use them. • Ride a bike on the right hand wide of the road traveling in the same direction as the traffic. • Always stop for stop signs and follow the rules of traffic lights. • Learn and follow the rules of the road. • Do not listen to your iPod mp3 player or other music device. Always pay attention to the traffic. Riding to School in a Car • Whether you are driving your children or carpooling, make sure each child is securely strapped into their seatbelt. Younger children need the appropriate car seat or booster seat for their age or size. • Have each child exit the car using the door on the curbside so they are not stepping out of the car into traffic. • Do not leave the school until your child, or all those in the carpool, are safely inside the school building. Backpack Safety Backpacks have become a staple of back to school accessories. They are great for carrying books and other essential school items and are available in a wide variety
of sizes, colors, designs and styles. Yet these useful bags are potentially harmful if not used correctly causing possible shoulder or neck injuries, back pain and muscle and joint strains. The following tips on backpack safety help reduce the chance of injury: • When a backpack is fully loaded, it should not weigh more than 15 to 20 percent of the child's body weight. • Never carry a backpack over one shoulder using only one strap. Always wear a backpack using both shoulder straps. • If a backpack has a waist strap, use it. • Choose a backpack with wide straps. The best choice is a backpack with a padded back and padded straps • Use all of the compartments in the backpack to distribute the weight of the contents more evenly. More Back to School Safety Tips The following are a few general back to school safety tips: • Talk to your children and reinforce the rules of stranger danger. • Make sure not to pack foods for lunch or snacks that spoil quickly. • Talk to your child about bullies and bullying. Explain to them what to do if a situation arises.

Every year the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Balloon Fest Committee members work hard to bring Balloon Fest to our community, but they can’t do it alone. Along with all the hard work that comes with organizing an event of this size, someone has to step up to the plate
and donate products, services, and money to support it. Some donors sponsor balloons, balloon pilots, or specific activities; some make small monetary donations; others make very large donations. It all adds up, but the sponsors are critical to the success of the event. Pictured here are
some of the major sponsors of Balloon Fest 2016. Be sure to thank them for their contribution to this year’s edition of the annual funfilled family-oriented festival we know as Balloon Fest. Elks Lodge #493 (L to R): front row: Tom Walsh; Jason Hoerschler; Dan Laquet, 2016 Balloon Fest

HELP PROTECT OUR STATE PARKS The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is appealing to Illinois State Park visitors to help park staff keep our parks clean and protect their unique natural features. Illinois State Parks receive millions of visits each year, and those visitors can tax the natural resources found within our parks and stretch park staff to the limit. Park visitors carrying water bottles, drink cups, food or other items should pack out those items when leaving the park as trash barrels are generally not available on trails. Diapers and other waste should be disposed of properly. “Our Illinois State Parks are economic drivers for the

DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I’ve tried to work in obedience training with my puppy, “Spaetzle,” during her morning and evening walks, because I read somewhere that this is the most efficient way to do it. But she doesn’t seem to pay attention, and I feel like we’re not getting very far. Am I doing something wrong? — Don in Chapel Hill, North Carolina DEAR DON: It’s not that you’re doing anything wrong, it’s that maybe training during walks isn’t right for Spaetzle. Obser ve your dog throughout the day for a few days. Are there times when she appears to be

I can’t think of anything else until you feed me!” Or, when Spaetzle is out for her walk, she may be focused on finding the perfect places to pee or poop. That’s where her attention is going. So more complex commands may go right past her. You can work on simpler behavioral training and commands throughout the day. During walks, of course,
