Jordan Has Spoken It was less than a year ago that Kareem Abdul Jabbar mentioned that Michael Jordan chose "commerce over conscience," failing to comment on the social issues we face in America. Welcome to this week's sports column. It's time to let the man have his say, which he did on ESPN's newly dropped website called "The Undefeated" — the famous sport channel's attempt to address racial matters, presumably in sports. Wedged between a listicle about Prince and the death of Ms. Cleo (which she surely predicted), we have a statement from his Airness himself. When you think about sports drinks or really cool sneakers or a guy who can fly and dunk on Bugs Bunny, only one name bubbles to the surface: Michael Jordan ... the second greatest player to ever play who did not fight Bruce Lee, through no fault of his own. When you think about social causes, the second most exposed athlete of alltime — Jordan — remained silent on the issues that mattered. No longer. Jordan has spoken. Here are his words: "As a proud American, a

hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change. "To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police's newly established Institute for C ommunity-Police Relations, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for CommunityPolice Relations' policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem, I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference. "We are privileged to live in the world's greatest country — a country that has provided my family and me the greatest of opportunities. The problems we face didn't happen overnight and they won't be solved tomorrow, but if we all work together, we can foster greater understanding, positive change and create a more peaceful world for ourselves, our children, our families and our communities." Now, can we get back to the game?

father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of AfricanAmericans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well. "I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers — who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all — are respected and supported. "Over the past three decades, I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family. I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize Mark Vasto is a veteran that for many people of sportswriter who lives in color their experiences with Kansas City. law enforcement have been different than mine. MONDAY NIGHT BINGO

This week's column was, for the most part, already written until after church Sunday. So what happened? First, let me assure you the last person to preach or sit in the pulpit, and who probably has more than anyone deserves, is me. Often I've said to family and friends I've lived a charmed life and have been blessed. So please understand when I incorporate my faith into this political column it's because I truly believe if we as a country don't turn to God now, we will face destruction within. And it's happening now. With that said, as I sat down in the back row of church last Sunday morning, I found it interesting that our pastor started out by saying he had his sermon done but had a calling in the middle of the night to rework it. Ironically, after watching the news early Sunday morning on the craziness in Milwaukee, WI, my mind was already churning about where we are as a country. I was also looking at a rewrite, about how we have become acceptant of — or should I say are turning a blind eye to — the wrong that's going on, and we are doing nothing about it. Let me start with what the Pastor said — something I had already also been thinking about — involving God. It was something I already knew and had thought about before walking into church. He said, "When we turn our backs on Israel, God will lift his hand off America." And then my mind flashed back to Milwaukee, then Ferguson, then Orlando, and on and on, and I realized this is happening. Our country is coming apart from within. Since 1948 America has stood firm with Israel, and so we should. As a Christian nation, one nation under God — and yes there are other faiths, but today they have more rights than we do — under this current administration our allegiance to Israel has been, in my opinion, less than committed and very shaky to say the least. And it's a

kiss of death leading to destruction from within. We have become a nation where approximately 20% of the Christians in the country attend churches on a regular basis. We at our church Sunday prayed for the men and women in blue, along with all first responders, as well as teachers, other staff, and our innocent children for their safety as they go back to school! When as a nation did that start happening? I see plenty wrong with this picture, not because we are praying, but because we have to be concerned about these things. On Saturday night all hell broke loose in Milwaukee. It's too early to know all the details. However, the answer, no matter what, isn't to destroy with rioting, hate and total disregard for human life. After a fatal shooting between an individual with a stolen gun and a police officer, at least 100 protestors set fire to at least four area businesses, one being a gas station with bulletproof glass, with employees inside when it was set on fire. Thank God all the employees survived with a great deal of effort. At least one police car was torched and one city alderman called for mayhem. Nothing like destroying opportunity for all! That takes a certain mentality, kind of like Ferguson, which Hillary Clinton glorified by having Michael Brown's mother at the DNC Convention. When did this kind of divide start? While all this is going on, many stay quiet, not to rock the boat. The liberal media, MSNBC and CNN, spin their bull by not covering real issues. A prime example, the hot topic last week was Donald Trump who said that the NRA could do something on the second amendment rights, meaning, in my opinion, that if they all got out and voted, Hillary couldn't win. The liberal media turned it into a threat. The real story of the week was more emails discovered that could tie the Clinton Foundation into a new possible scandal "Pay

to Play." Buy a job. And to top it off, government officials allegedly have shut down FBI inquiries of the Clinton Foundation, really in typical Clintonian fashion. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture? No wonder Donald Trump said, "I'm running against the crooked media." Indeed he is! Time and time again I've personally witnessed the liberal media shout down Trump supporters when trying to defend their candidate. But what I found really disgusting was, during a press conference last week, behind Hillary Clinton sat the father of the shooter from the Orlando, FL massacre where 49 innocent people lost their lives. If that doesn't say it all, nothing will. Frankly, I'm a lot more concerned about what the Clintons have done and are doing than what Trump says. Instead of twisting the words of Donald Trump, the liberal media should be covering, among other breaking news stories like Hillary Clinton's "Pay to Play" and the Orlando shooter's father being displayed behind Hillary Clinton. Now let's turn to the corrupt state of Illinois. Let me encourage you to go to fixillinois.com and sign the petition to support term limits. Join the movement. Only 25% of the people of Illinois are confident in their government. Why? In 2014 the Illinois Supreme Court threw out a 600,000 signature petition for term limits, and the last year Illinois had a balanced budget was 2001. In closing, let me say 75% of all adults nationally believe in term limits. But most of all we need to turn back to God. Until next week. Cooking With Lizzie

After Balloon Fest Garden Party The excitement is in the air — literally — with the start of Balloon Fest 2016. This year it's August 18, 19 and 20, a perfect time to plan a party after the festivities in the park. Start with good company and serve up good food with Southern Illinois hospitality, but keep it simple so you can enjoy. And to keep the mood going, string trees with white lights and hang hot air balloons. Start with picnic fried chicken or old cuts, add side dishes of potato salad and pea salad and finish with Mama's Ambrosia for dessert.

LOCAL CHURCH SUPPORTS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

BLOOD DRIVE HELD IN HONOR OF TERRY AND RHONDA HATCHER

BY DOUG GUNTER

On August 11, 2016 Pastor Steve Upchurch of the Rock Church in Centralia, along with staff and volunteers, held a luncheon for local area law enforcement officers. We asked Pastor Steve Upchurch why he and the Church decided to put together their lunch and dinner. The pastor said, "All the negativity and lack of support we are seeing from some communities and government for our law enforcement in the media. We decided to honor them with a cookout style lunch and dinner at the Rock Church at 515 Airport Road in Centralia." These men and women are just like you and me. They have families they go home to after every shift. At this time the Rock

Church is taking orders for "I Back Blue" tee shirts to support law enforcement. You can place an order by calling the church at 618533-3700. The Rock Church holds services on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. as well as on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Proverbs 15:3: "The Lord is watching everywhere with eyes like an eagle, watching over evil and good."

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Fishers of Men Sadly, many people are satisfied to ride a merry-goround of meaninglessness throughout their life. God has a plan for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11) Jesus came to call us to a higher purpose. On the shore of the Sea of Galilee Jesus met some fishermen and said, “’Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:18-22) Listen closely to the Lord’s call and respond to God’s higher purpose for your life.” “ F O L L O W M E .” (Matthew 4:19) Jesus constantly met people and invited them to follow Him. Jesus calls, “Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest . . . Take My toke upon you and learn from Me.” (Matthew 11:28-30) Jesus saw Zacchaeus up in a tree and extended an invitation to follow Him that changed his life. (Luke 19:2-8) Jesus instructed a rich young ruler, “Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” (Luke 18:18-23) Jesus met two brothers who were fishermen and

called them to follow Him and, “They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” He then called James and John and they gave the same response, “Immediately they left their boat and their father and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:19-22) They left all to follow Jesus. Jesus is calling, will you make Him Lord and Savior and follow Him? It is the first radical step to God’s higher purpose for your life. “I WILL MAKE YOU.” (Matthew 4:19) A higher purpose is gained by confidence in Christ as our Maker. (Psalm 100:1-2) Paul said that he put no confidence in the flesh, but in the power of Christ. (Philippians 3:3, 5-10) Years ago I met a man who was an expert flyfisherman. I asked him if he would teach me how, but he refused. Jesus said, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” He is the master teacher. Follow His example, study His instructions, catch His passion, be empowered by His Spirit. (Acts 1:8) “FISHERS OF MEN.” (Matthew 4:19) Jesus went out of His way to meet a Samaritan woman at a well and offered her life-giving water to quench her spiritual thirst. (John 4) She

11

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area became a fisher of men. She was compelled to tell all she met about Jesus. Someone said that evangelism is simply one beggar telling another thirsty, hungry beggar where they can find living water that will quench their thirst and bread that will satisfy their hunger. In this year’s Olympic games, two diving gold medalist from the United States stood on the podium and boldly gave glory to Christ for enabling them to achieve their success. Use whatever platform that God gives you to be a fisher of men. (Isaiah 52:7) When we stand before God in heaven, we won’t be asked how much we achieved or accumulated on earth, but “What did you do for Jesus?” Are you a fisher of men? “MENDING THEIR NETS.” (Matthew 4:21) Jesus found James and John mending their nets and called them. Whatever vocation or ministry one is called to, it is never a waste of time to mend your nets or sharpen your tools. At Lake of the Ozarks there is a restaurant with an interesting name – Wobbly Boots. I had a vision while praying, of a man driving a horse and wagon. One of the wheels was so wobbly that I was concerned that it was about to fall off. To be an effective fisher of men, take time to mend your nets or tighten the lug nuts on your wheel. It may involve making amends, repenting of sin and disobedience or strengthening your gifts or your relationship with Jesus. Jesus is calling, “Follow

Me and I will make you fishers of men.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Free activities for children and families will give Illinois State Fair visitors a chance to sample the great outdoors in Illinois at Conservation World at this year’s state fair on Aug. 12-21 in Springfield. Conservation World is a 30-acre park with grass, shade trees, and ponds located on the northwest corner of the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Conservation World is easily accessible through a pedestrian gate near the Junior Livestock Building, and via a state fair tram stop next to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) headquarters. “The tradition continues at Conservation World, with plenty to do for kids interested in spending time outdoors, and great ideas for families looking to spend time together,” said IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal. Traditional free activities for youth at Conservation World include kids fishing clinics at the pond inside the Conservation World gate, with all bait and tackle provided; and, archery and BB gun practice ranges for youth that are hosted by IDNR shooting sports experts and safety education instructors and volunteers. IDNR wildlife, fisheries and natural heritage staffs will host displays and answer questions about wildlife watching, fishing and hunting prospects, habitat enhancement projects, and programs that are available to assist private

landowners. The IDNR Division of Education will help children learn about saving species, including monarch butterflies and pollinators. State fair visitors can purchase Illinois fishing and hunting licenses and learn about the duties of a Conservation Police officer at the IDNR Law Enforcement tent, while the Division of Forest Resources invites families to keep an eye out for Smokey Bear while talking with foresters about trees and tree care. Experts from the Illinois Green Industry Association can answer questions on at-home habitats and landscaping from the IGIA gazebo at the center of Conservation World. Daily fly fishing instruction and weekend Voyageur canoe rides are also free activities for all ages at Conservation World. Pick up the latest edition of the Illinois State Parks guide, and enter to win an outdoor adventure package with purchase of a deer, turkey or morel lapel pin at the Illinois Sportsmen Against Hunger Information Tent. Food and drink vendors at Conservation World will include southern Illinois’ famed 17th Street Barbeque, Vose corn dogs, ice cream, kettle corn, shaved ice, and homemade root beer. Illinois State Fair admission includes free admission to Conservation World, which is open daily from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. through Aug. 21.

PAWS and claws A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.

Should Dogs Drink Tap Water? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently you advised against using human toothpaste to brush dogs’ teeth because, for one thing, the fluoride in toothpaste is toxic to them. With this in mind, what are the ramifications of dogs drinking fluoridated water? — Rich, via e-mail DEAR RICH: That’s an excellent question, and one that all pet owners should consider. About 67 percent of the U.S. population receives municipal drinking water with added fluoride, according to a 2012 C enters for Disease Control and Prevention report. Opinions on fluoride

and its effect on people and pets is an emotional issue, for understandable reasons. And that can leave pet owners even more confused about whether they should be protecting their pets from tap water. The Merck Manual of Pet Health details the effects of fluoride at toxic levels (for pets, that can be as low as 1 milligram per kilogram). But that does not address fluoride in water. If municipalities fluoridate their water, it is diluted at 0.7 parts per million, which is very small — but many people are concerned that those small amounts can build up in one’s system over time, causing long-term health effects. For the short term, you can simply avoid giving pets tap water every day — use filtered or bottled water instead. But bottled water has its own set of issues (such as plastic filling up landfills). How can you find out if your drinking water has added fluoride? Contact your local water utility

by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved English author and humorist P.G. Wodehouse, probably best known for his tales of Wooster and Jeeves, who made the following observation: "Judges, as a class, display, in the matter of arranging [divorce settlements] that reckless generosity which is found only in men who are giving away someone else's money." • Brides in ancient

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You sometimes go to extremes to prove a point. But this time, you won’t have to. Supporters are ready, falling over themselves to help you make your case. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Venus might be your ruling planet, but Mars is in the picture as well. So don’t be surprised if your romantic relationships are a bit rocky at this time. But they’ll soon smooth over. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Geminis might rush into romance and risk being wrong about someone rather than be left with no one. But this is one time when it’s wiser to be wary of where your heart takes you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) With all (or most) of those pesky problems behind you, take time for your family and friends. Travel aspects are favored, with long-distance journeys high on the list. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have started to question the wisdom of being open with someone you hoped you could trust. But be assured you won’t be disappointed. You’ll soon hear good news. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You have a reputation for honesty and integrity, and that will help turn around a situation that was not only disappointing but also quite unfair. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A happy event creates a closer tie with a family member who seemed hope-

lessly estranged. Positive aspects also dominate in important career matters. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your ruling planet, Pluto, helps you adjust to change. So, stop putting off that long-delayed move, and make it with the assurance that you’re doing the right thing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You have a wonderful capacity to learn quickly and well. This will help you when you are faced with an opportunity to move on to a new path in life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: You suddenly find that you’re not facing that new challenge alone. You now have someone at your side, ready to offer whatever support you might need. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your versatility -- which is just one of those aspects of yourself that make you so special -- helps you adapt to the challenges of a new and exciting opportunity. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sensitive nature picks up on the needs of others. But what about your desires? You need to take more time to assess what your goals are and, if necessary, redirect them. BORN THIS WEEK: You give your trust openly and easily. People find you easy to be with and enjoy your wit, your good sense, and your capacity to love and be loved.. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

at the service, "Before the sermon and while the crowd was gathering, a wicked parrot that was a household pet got excited and commenced swearing so loud and long as to disturb the people and had to be carried from the house." • The reasons why aren't clearly understood, but it seems that people with high blood pressure rarely get cancer. •* Glass-bottom beer tankards were invented during medieval times. Evidently, some taverns were so rough that patrons felt the need to be able to see the other drinkers even when turning the mug bottoms-up. • Those who study

such things say that when you're sleeping, a quarter of all your blood is in your liver. • It's pretty common knowledge that it's the male seahorse, not the female, that gives birth to the young. Not many people realize, though, that a male seahorse can deliver a brood of a thousand or more babies in the morning, and then be pregnant again that night.. *** Thought for the Day: "I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult." — E.B. White © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
