Unless it's Rickey Henderson, nobody spends hundreds of dollars to go see a baseball game and root, root, root for the home team to walk. Thankfully, Ned Yost and the Royals freed us from that oppression. They did this by developing a strong farm system that taught fundamentals stressing movement ... great defense, speed and hits, backed by a lights-out bullpen. Now that's baseball worth paying to see. It's been a little over 40 years since George Steinbrenner ushered in the free-agent era by signing Catfish Hunter. At this year's trade deadline, Hal Steinbrenner's fire sale of five veterans, the surefire impending release of A-Rod and lack of extension talk for Mark Texeira in order to shore up an anemic farm, signaled another change: the bigtrade era, perhaps? I'm personally in favor of austerity because no matter what, a few things will never change for baseball: Good pitching beats good hitting, you can't catch a ball hit out of the park and the team with the most runs wins.

End of an Error If we needed any further evidence that baseball is, once again, metamorphosing into a different era, this season's trade deadline was all the proof needed. While all major sports do the same -- basketball recently saw the addition of the three-point line, football killed the kickoff return, tennis now allows limited coaching, boxing switched to 12-round fights and hockey added the shootout -- no other sport has fiddled with its secret sauce as often as baseball. What exactly constitutes an "era," you may be asking? Well, in Boston, that's how they pronounce the word "error," as in "Nomah shouldn't be chahged with an era on that play!" Those in the English-speaking parts of the country generally see an "era" as beginning with a readily identifiable change in culture. Baseball, probably due to its fan base's love of statistical scrutiny, seems to revel in this sort of unofficial, much-written-about classification system. IRAP HAS ARCHERY DEER HUNTING SITES GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD FEATURES TWO SISTERS AVAILABLE ON PRIVATE LAND Don’t have a place to archery deer hunt but would like to go hunting this October? Look no further than the Illinois R e c re at i on a l Ac c e s s Program (IRAP), the popular Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) program linking outdoors enthusiasts with landowners. IRAP leases land from private landowners for specific outdoor activities, one of which is archery deer hunting during the month of October. This October will be the second year IRAP has offered archery deer hunting on leased sites. In 2015, more than 90 applications were received for 33 sites. This year, archery deer

hunting opportunities are available on IRAP sites in Clark, Franklin, Greene, Lee, Macoupin, Monroe, Sangamon and Schuyler counties with a total of 56 hunting sites. Applicants can hunt either the first 15 days of the month (October 1-15) or the last 16 days of the month (October 1631). The deadline for IDNR to receive IRAP archery deer hunting applications is Tuesday, August 30, 2016. To apply for an archery deer hunting site through IRAP, go to: http://www. dnr.illinois.gov/conservation/IRAP/Pages/ArcheryDeer-Hunting.aspx As a landowner, the benefits of leasing land to IRAP are many. For starters, IRAP will pay a nominal

lease fee dependent upon acreage and type of activities the landowner is willing to allow on their property. IRAP also provides a $2 million liability policy for all IRAP activities. In addition, an IRAP biologist will write a management plan on the enrolled acreage and will offer assistance in implementing the plan (which can be as great as a 90/10 cost-share). Nicolle and Danielle Patton When the sisters were in the process of earning their Gold Awards, they each took on projects that would benefit the youth of their community. Nicolle partnered with Hope In Christ shelter. She educated people on the issue of homelessness in their community, made major improvements to the shelter facility and provided Christmas boxes to the children at the shelter. “Nicolle has influenced me for as long as I can remember. Every little sister wants to be like her older sister, and I was no exception,” states Danielle. “When I saw her work hard for her Gold Award, I told myself that one day I would be standing on that stage receiving recognition for all of my hard work. She made me want to strive to be a better person and set my goals higher,” Danielle added. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Danielle partnered with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). She wanted to give the youth that were served by this organization some of the luxuries many others think of as staples. She made sure each child had a box that contained supplies to have an age appropriate birthday party; a bag with many essentials, books and toys; and a life book that provided words of encouragement and inspiration to the children who received them. Having achieved the Gold Award herself, Nicolle was there to support her sister along the way. “Danielle has always told me she looked up to me. I wanted to set an example for her; I wanted her to strive to be the best that she could be because she’s an amazing young lady,” said Nicolle. “Above all, I reminded her of the impact she was making as she continued to work on her project. She was changing people’s lives for the better. The long hours of work she put into the project

couldn’t compare to the impact she was having on those deserving people. I am extremely proud of what she accomplished.” Nicolle and Danielle encourage young girls to get involved in Girl Scouting and for older girls to go for their Gold Award. “Girl Scouts has impacted my life so much over the years,” said Nicolle. “Not only has it helped me come out of my shell, but it also taught me some important life lessons along the way. It taught me that I could be a leader – that I had the drive and the skills all along. To this day, I use those same skills in my work and my schooling,” Nicolle added. “Earning my Gold Award taught me skills that I’ll use in the future; it gave me a sense of adulthood,” Danielle said. She also encourages other girls to strive for this top award. “Do it! Believe in yourself and push yourself to do better each day,” she added. Nicolle is in her final year at S out he r n I l li nois University Edwardsville where she will graduate with a degree in Mass Communications, minoring in Theatre and Dance. She plans to pursue a career in the television industry after graduation. Danielle is a senior at Mt. Vernon Township High School. Upon graduation, she intends to pursue a degree in Communications. Today, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is the largest voluntary organization for girls in the world. Its sole focus is to meet the needs of all girls (ages 5-17) from diverse racial, ethnic and socioecon om i c b a ck g rou n d s . Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. Girl Scouting is the place where girls experience the fun, friendship and power of girls together.

It's been quite a week, especially for Barack Obama while he puts his golfing vacation above the American people, and Louisiana falls victim to yet another national disaster because of heavy flooding. At least 30 parishes have been declared to be a disaster and the death toll as of August 18 climbed to 13. At least 20,000 people were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard as the massive flooding covered the areas in and around Baton Rouge. An estimated 40,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed as the people are scrambling for housing in an already depressed area where there's been a housing shortage ever since Hurricane Katrina a decade ago. And where is our illustrious leader? Our Commanderin-Chief! Why where else but vacationing in Martha's Vineyard with his wife, painting the town red and doing what he does best, playing golf. I couldn't help but look back a decade ago to the horrors of Hurricane Katrina when then President George W. Bush was heavily criticized by the liberal media for not returning to Washington from his vacation more than a day after Katrina hit. So today I'm wondering where is the press attack on Obama while Louisiana is underwater. I guess they're too busy trying to get Hillary elected! The White House did announce that Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson will visit the state to review the federal government's response. I guess that's good of them. Thank goodness, Donald Trump stepped in and played President. Neither Clinton nor Obama did. In other news of the week, a spokesperson for the Clinton Foundation has said there are plans to end accepting foreign donations should Hillary be elected President! That's good,

since it should have happened when she became Secretary of State since there was definite conflict of interest that could have and probably did come into play. The Foundation has been under serious scrutiny since Hillary Clinton's bid for the Commander-in-Chief job, with Republicans charging that donors were rewarded with access to her and her aides as well as her husband, from 2009 to 2013 while she was the Secretary of State. The Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Foundation throughout 2016 has raised two billion dollars, allegedly for charity. Really! According to thefederalist. com, in 2013 the Clinton Foundation only spent 10% of its budget on charitable grants, meaning Hillary Clinton's non-profit organization spent more on office supplies and rent than it did in charitable grants. Although after weeks of attacks for shady bookkeeping and questionable expenditures, the Foundation in tweets posted that 88% of its expenditures went "directly to [the Foundation's] life changing work." In my opinion, that's probably true, that being the life changing of the Clintons' lifestyle — Bill, Hillary and Chelsea. Other reports did say that the Clinton Foundation has given as much as 15% to charity and spent 85% on overhead. The numbers vary. My issue is the Clinton Foundation has been, is right now, and will continue to be a conflict of interest as well as possibly a legal matter with the IRS because of the lack of reporting donation to the IRS at one point. And of course there's always that little matter of "pay to play." In closing on the matter, the Clinton Foundation is some-

what different than most non for profits since they claim all charitable work is allegedly performed by staff, an unusual approach for a non for profit. Remember, both Clintons are attorneys with layers and layers of scandals and corruption. Last but not least, heading to Virginia where long time friend of the Clintons, Governor Terry McAuliffe is under an ongoing federal investigation over campaign contributions. That dates back to a year ago and focuses at least in part on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated the law. As part of the probe, investigations have scrutinized the Governor's time as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative, a vehicle of the Clinton Foundation. Imagine that! To make matters even worse, McAuliffe is vowing to restore voting rights to 13,000 felons, of course, just in time to vote for Hillary. But the good news is he doesn't plan on restoring their gun rights. But trust, they know where to get them illegally. In closing, all I can say is oh, the web we weave by turning a blind eye to layers and layers of corruption. If elected, Hillary will be no different than Barack Obama, only with more layers of corruption and dishonesty. The same old plan will continue. Deny! Deny! Deny! And the sad part is, with truth staring them in the face, many won't look at the truth and will vote for Hillary Clinton anyway. Until next week. It is time to have a last summer fling with grilling, outdoor games, swimming, and best of all, the company of family and friends. But first of all, crank up the grill and enjoy some of my favorite burgers. Make a side salad, serve your favorite beverages, and then sit back and enjoy the fun!

Bronco Burger 1 lb. extra-lean ground beef 1 egg 1/4 cup plus 2 T. BBQ sauce, divided 1 red pepper, cut into ½-inch-wide strips 4 onion slices, ½ inch thick

4 cheese slices 4 hamburger buns 1/4 cup mayonnaise spread 4 lettuce leaves

Heat barbecue to medium-high heat. Mix meat, egg and 2 T. barbecue sauce; shape into 4 patties. Grill patties, peppers and onions 5 min. on each side or until burgers are done (160ºF) and vegetables are softened and lightly charred, brushing burgers and vegetables occasionally with remaining barbecue sauce. Top burgers with cheese; grill 1 to 2 min. or until melted. Meanwhile, place buns, cut-sides down, on barbecue; grill until toasted. Spread buns with mayonnaise; fill with lettuce, burgers and vegetables.

God is Love Christianity is unique in the fact that our God desires a loving, personal relationship with His creation. God is love. (I John 4:8, 16) The other day I was parked at a Casey’s convenience store when a cool red 1973 VW parked beside me. It was classic “love bug.” Some sort of eyebrows were affixed above the headlights and the fenders were decorated with decals of flowers, reminiscent of flower power and the “free love” of the hippie movement. But true love and meaning in life is found in the love of God. Max Lucado wrote in his book God Came Near, “Should a man see only popularity, he becomes a mirror, reflecting whatever needs to be reflected to gain acceptance . . . should a man see only power, he becomes a wolf . . . prowling, hunting, and stalking . . . as a result he who sees only power is degraded to an animal . . . Should a man seek only pleasure, he becomes a carnival

thrill seeker, alive only in bright lights, wild rides and titillating entertainment . . . Only in seeking his maker does a man truly become man. For in seeking his Creator, man catches a glimpse of what he was intended to be.” To be what God intended you to be, catch a glimpse of God’s love through Christ. “JESUS WEPT.” (John 11:35) It’s the shortest verse in the Bible and perhaps the most revealing. The One True God, Jesus wept! Why? Because He felt the pain of His loved ones. He wept because He is so full of empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This is awesome. The omnipotent Creator understands and shares your feeling. God is love. JESUS DIED FOR SINNERS. A recent Facebook post said,

“Many religions teach that man can become gods. Christianity teaches that God became a man.” The apostle Paul declared, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.” (I Timothy 1:15) Until we realize our own moral depravity we will never fully understand and experience the love of God. John the beloved revealed, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (I John 4:10) Now that is love! JESUS CAME TO MAKE US CHILDREN OF GOD. John described it this way, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God.” (I John 3:1) What an awesome relationship we can have with God. Jesus painted a picture of Father God’s incredible love in the parable the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. After wasting all his “sub-

stance on riotous living,” the prodigal son returned home with guilt, shame, and remorse. His father ran to him with open arms, forgave him, and restored him to sonship. He put a ring on his finger, sandals on his feet, and a new robe on his back. What a demonstration of God’s love for us. Aaron Shust sings a powerful song, “Ever Be” – “Your love is devoted like a ring of solid gold. Like a vow that is tested, like a covenant of old. Your love is enduring through the winter rain. And beyond the horizon with mercy for today . . . Your praise will ever be on my lips, ever be on my lips.” How do you respond to such love?
