The Hall of Fame, for any sport, can be a bit of a buzzkill. For one thing, casual followers of the sport could not care less about who a bunch of journalists or insiders choose to venerate in their hallowed halls. I mean, my favorite baseball players growing up were Graig Nettles, R ick C erone, Mi ke Pagliarulo and Don Mattingly. They all make my personal Hall of Fame. Know how many of them made the actual Hall of Fame? Zero. Zilch. Nada. That's fine, however. It's not like anybody else gets to see their favorite player make the Hall in regular order. Look, we all like and appreciate the superstars ... but when it comes to picking your favorite player, you have to kind of skip the obvious favorites. Nobody picks Jerry Garcia as their favorite member of the Grateful Dead and nobody picks John Lennon as their favorite Beatle. Those two picks are implied ... it's the M c C a r t n e y, We i r, Harrison, Pigpen picks

Low Country Seafood Boil What's the close of summer without a Low Country Seafood Boil! It's a favorite along the shoreline of South Carolina and Georgia where there is an emphasis on casual outdoor gatherings that makes the Seafood Boil the perfect main dish. So gather up family and friends, toss everything together in a stockpot, cook, drain, and serve. After draining, I serve it on spread out newspapers (of course, The Shoppers Weekly is best) and watch everyone dig in. I always ice down everyone's favorite beverage in a big washtub. It's the epitome of casual eating. Nothing formal about this menu, but it makes for a fun and relaxing poolside afternoon or evening.

Petition forms and information will be available in the City Clerk’s Office beginning August 30, 2016. This election will be for the seats currently held by Council Members Howard Jones and Andre Marshall. Both of the seats are 4-year terms. Candidates may begin circulating the petition sheets on August 30. Signed nominating petitions must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office during the statutory filing period of Monday, November 21 until Monday, November 28 at 5:00 p.m. Ballot placement is determined by the order of submission in the Clerk’s office. Also, those candidates filing simultaneously in the last hour on November 28 will be included in a lottery drawing to determine the final ballot position. If nine or more candidates file for the 4-year term Council positions, a Primary election will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. The General Election will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. The successful candidates will be seated at the first regular or special meeting in

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

A Woman Jesus Bragged On There have been many re m a r k a b l e w om e n throughout history. But one unnamed woman caught Jesus’ attention and he pointed her out to his disciples. Jesus took his disciples to a quiet section of the temple where there were 13 brass containers shaped like trumpets where worshippers put in their offerings. “Many rich people threw in large amounts.” (Mark 12:41) Their loud clanking coins drew attention to themselves. An unnamed, elderly widow woman came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.” (Mark 12:42) She didn’t impress anyone in the temple that day but Jesus. “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:4344) Her act of faith amazed Jesus. How can our faith and giving get the attention and applause of heaven and bring honor to God? GIVE GLADLY AND QUIETLY. The widow

woman wanted no fanfare and gave gladly and quietly without expecting anything in return. Her only motive was the pleasure of giving in devotion to God. It is the only lasting reward from heaven. (Matthew 6:1-4) NO MATTER HOW MANY STRIKES YOU MAY HAVE AGAINST YOU, STAY CONNECTED TO GOD. Despite her poverty and struggles, she was determined to go to church and worship God with gratitude. She gave what she had. Ludwig van Beethoven became totally deaf and avoided all social functions. But when his friend’s son tragically died, he wanted to go to his house and somehow offer comfort. Entering the house, he saw a piano, sat down at it, and expressed his emotions in beautiful music. After half an hour, he left. His friend later remarked that B e e t h o v e n’s m u s i c brought more comfort to him than what anyone else could say with many condolences. Paul said it is not the size of our gift, but the willingness and love in our heart. (II Corinthians 8:12) WE CAN GIVE WITHOUT EXPECTING

OR DEMANDING ANYTHING BACK. This is what impressed Jesus about this poor widow. Another widow gave sacrificially to help God’s prophet Elijah. (II Kings 17:12) Jesus gave his all for us. The early church made a three-part hymn from this amazing scripture which they often sang. “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus . . . but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant . . . Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:5-11) The greatest motive in giving is an overflowing heart of gratitude. (II Corinthians 8:9) WE NEED TO ABANDON OUR TRUST IN MONEY TO FULFILL US AND TRUST ONLY IN GOD. The widow woman gave her last two pennies. Jesus said that she gave more than all the rest. She gave sacrificially. It brought pleasure to God. WE CAN BE SURE JESUS IS WATCHING US. Jesus watched the widow woman give. He watches us. Whatever we give, do, or wherever we are, Jesus watches us. (Psalm 121) The pay off in

giving is not in getting, but in bringing pleasure to God. “We love him because he first loved us.” (I John 4:19) Out of a heart of devotion and gratitude, give what you have to God, you will be blessed.

STORE HOURS MON. - THURS. 9 A.M. TO 5:30 P.M. FRIDAY 9 A.M. - 7 P.M. SATURDAYS 9 A.M. - 5 P.M.

Last week was not a good week for either Presidential candidate. With Donald Trump it was do we deport or don't we deport? For Hillary Clinton, another 15,000 emails were found that will be released — in Clintonian fashion, probably after the election — and, of course, in comes the Clinton Foundation and Pay to Play! But back to immigration. What is Trump's game plan? It appears to have softened. According to Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican Party, the wall will be built and there will be some deportation, but humanely. Families won't be split up, especially for those who have been here for a while, obeyed our laws and have been model citizens. Criminals will be deported. In Mr. Priebus' words, "Trump will be a law and order President." He is unlike Clinton, who will allow thousands upon thousands to jump the line, especially Syrians who we'll support better than our veterans. At the top of the list, we know top secret emails were mishandled, which put national security in jeopardy. So in my opinion, last week was a much better week for Trump than Clinton! Between the two there is no comparison. Keep in mind, years ago there was great concern over the Clinton Foundation from the current administration, and with good reason. That was a given, and justifiably so. The bottom line is the Clintons used the Clinton Foundation to advance the Clintons. Last week as a whole was ugly, with name calling, accusations and below the belt conduct. However, I can rest easier with what Trump says than with what Hillary does. Let's face it, both Presidential candidates have many

enemies. But if you have to reach back to the 70's to hit Trump, that's an overreach. Especially when all you have to do is look at last week for Clinton, e.g., the Clinton Foundation on jeopardizing national security with misuse of government emails. Or better yet, Clinton trying to blame Colin Powell for her misuse of emails! So where is the race today? From what I can tell it's close, but I'm the first one to say this has been the strangest election year I've ever seen, almost unpredictable all the way around. Keep in mind, there are more and more registering Republican to vote in a number of states. So what does that mean? Who knows. There are a number of variables. Are they switching party? Are they new voters? Has it been a while since they voted? Trump is narrowing the gap, even with Clinton outspending him. My take at this point is 40% know they'll be voting for Trump and 40% know they'll be voting for Clinton. So what are the rest going to do? That's up for grabs. On another matter, according to Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL), "“Earlier this summer, we learned the Land of Lincoln co-op created under Obamacare will shut down and end coverage for thousands of Illinois residents, because it was financially unsustainable – losing over $90 million last year alone. Today we find out the remaining options available for Illinois residents in the exchange will take even more of their income in 2017. An individual plan will go up almost 50%, on average. Small group plans are also averaging double-digit increases. “The President and his fellow Obamacare supporters

promised all uninsured Americans this law would make health insurance accessible and affordable. Of course, he also vowed that those already with coverage they liked would be able to keep it. We now know that is simply not the case in Illinois and across the country. Because of increasing premiums and high deductibles, people are paying more for less coverage than they did before, while the newly insured are facing limited, expensive choices on the exchanges. “We can and must do better by repealing Obamacare and rebuilding a foundation on free-market principals driven by competition, where insurers design and offer a variety of plan options for consumers to make choices on what meets their individual and family needs at a price they can afford.” And last but not least, it's been reported that Hillary Clinton is the first female to run for President of the United States. Well not so fast. Is she or isn't she? That's debatable. It just so happens there was a young lady that was involved in the women's suffrage movement that threw (excuse the expression) her hat in the ring in 1872 as the Equal Rights Party candidate. Her name was Victoria Claflin Woodhull. More on that tidbit next week. Thanks, Georgia, for the heads up. Until next week. BIRD HUNTING BILL BECOMES LAW State Representative John C a v a l e t t o ( R- S a l e m ) , Republican spokesperson for the Small Business Empowerment and Workforce Development Committee, announced recently that Governor Rauner signed into law House Bill 4604 to allow the Department of Natural Resources to permit bird hunters to take bobwhite quail, chukar partridge, and gray partridge on public hunting

grounds and authorized the Department to extend the hunting season between September 1 and March 31. “I see this as an economic development effort,” said Rep. Cavaletto. “The extension of the hunting season and the additional type of birds will impact the number of licenses sold, and the grain and feed business connected to birds and hunting dogs. This is a win-win for bird hunters and

small businesses that serve the bird hunting segment of sportsmen,” added Cavaletto. Hunting and trapping play an important role in the ecology and conservation of Illinois’ game species. To find out more about opportunities for sportsmen in Illinois, you can find information on the Department of Natural Resources web site at www. dnr.illinois.gov.

SHIMKUS STATEMENT ON OBAMACARE RATE SHOCK C ongressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) issued the following statement after last Wednesday’s announcement of the large premium rate increases in 2017 for the Obamacare marketplace exchange in Illinois: “This is another unfortunate example of why I voted against the creation of Obamacare and continue to support repeal and replacement with solutions that use the free market rather than the heavy hand of government. “Earlier this summer, we learned the Land of Lincoln co-op created under Obamacare will shut down and end coverage for thousands of Illinois residents, because it was financially unsustainable – losing over $90 million last year alone. Today we find out the remaining options available for Illinois residents in the exchange will take even more of their income in 2017. An individual plan will go up almost 50%, on average. Small group plans are also averaging double-digit increases. “The President and his fellow Obamacare supporters promised all uninsured Americans this law would make health insurance accessible and affordable. Of course, he also vowed that those already with coverage they liked would be able to keep it. We now know that is simply

not the case in Illinois and across the country. Because of increasing premiums and high deductibles, people are paying more for less coverage than they did before, while the newly insured are facing limited, expensive choices on the exchanges. “We can and must do better

by repealing Obamacare and rebuilding a foundation on free-market principals driven by competition, where insurers design and offer a variety of plan options for consumers to make choices on what meets their individual and family needs at a price they can afford.”

By Larry Cox Mom's Cookbooks Q: I have inherited my mom's cookbook collection. There is one book that I think might be valuable. It is a 1900 edition of the "White House Cook Book" by Fanny Lemira Gillette and published by the Saalfield Company. In addition to recipes and several engravings of first ladies, there are two pages featuring titles of other Saalfield books. Although I have no plans to sell this book since it is a family heirloom, I am curious about how much it might be worth. — Susan, Metarie, Louisiana A: The first edition of the "White House Cook Book" was published in 1887 and was based on recipes gathered by Fanny Lemira Gillette. Subsequent editions were co-authored by Hugo Ziemann, White House steward, and featured interesting facts such as seating plans and etiquette for state occasions. There also were illustrations of

the White House kitchen and dining rooms. These cookbooks were extremely popular and updated through the 1930s. According to the "Collectible Cookbooks Price Guide" by Patricia Edwards and Peter Peckham and published by Krause Books, your cookbook is valued in the $50 to $100 range, depending, of course, on condition. Most of the editions of the "White House Cookbook" I have spotted in shops and at antique malls have been priced in the $35 to $50 range. *** Q: I have a vase that an elderly lady gave me. She called it "Goofy Glass." It features rose-like blossoms all around the outside. I wonder if you have any knowledge of this type of glass and could clue me in. — Shirley, State Center, Iowa A: I think your vase could be a piece of Goofus glass. I can't find anything about goofy glass. Accord-

ing to "Glass A to Z" by David J. Shotwell, Goofus glass is a type of lusterpainted glassware, spraypainted prior to firing. It was originally painted in colors that included gold, red, green, blue and combinations. Even though bowls and trays are the most common pieces of Goofus, vases also were crafted. Designs often featured flowers of all types. Shotwell's book is one of my favorite references about glass, and I always keep it handy because of questions like yours. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I have five dogs, varying in age from puppy to senior, and three parakeets, and because of their very different dietary needs, I’m careful about what I buy and what they eat. I’ve seen many more product recalls of pet food than there used to be, even just a few years ago. What is going on?. — Daniel, via email DEAR DANIEL: What you’re seeing is the result of the Food Safety Modernization Act, which was signed into law in 2011. improve food safety, including mandating petfood recalls. Before the law was passed, individual pet-food companies could recall foods at their discretion. Because of this — and because the regulations were finalized in September 2015 — we are seeing a lot more pet products being recalled. For pet owners, this sudden increase is certainly alarming. However, it’s also an indication that some of the new regulations are beginning to work. Companies are complying with the recall mandate, and hopefully the same companies also are working to improve their pet-food products so that they are safe to eat. As a pet owner, you can help keep the new FDA regulations moving forward. Go to www. FDA.gov and search for “pet food.” There you’ll find detailed instructions on filing a complaint about a pet food, along

by Samantha Weaver • It's still not known who made the following sage obser vation: "Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this." • You probably won't be surprised to learn that 92 percent of teens say that they use social media — the only question there is why the other 8 percent aren't using it. It is sur-

prising, though, that, according to a recent survey, 54 percent of teens feel their teen years would be happier if social media didn't exist. • This contentious election season is a good time to increase your vocabulary. Between now and Nov. 8, you may find ample opportunity to use the word "calumniate," which means "to mali-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The typically tidy Ram or Ewe might want to butt out until things are settled on the home front. But get involved and let your Ovine sense of order help restore domestic tranquility. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s flair for fine-tuning complicated fiscal dealings comes in handy when an unexpected financial problem arises. Stay with it until it’s resolved to your satisfaction. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family aspects remain strong. There might be some unresolved difficulties, but continued attempts to smooth things over eventually prove to be successful. A major purchase looms. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A promise that was made but never kept suddenly re-emerges in your life. You now have to decide if you’re still interested in what it offers or if you’ve moved past it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance comes to unattached Leos and Leonas who have been waiting for Cupid to target them for far too long. Domestic purr-fection is also enhanced for paired Felines. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You need to take a much-needed break from that demanding project before too much energy-draining tension sets in. And don’t be ashamed to ask for help. Johnson owned four beagles while he was in the White House: Edgar, Freckles, Him and Her. • In 2011, a Denver woman named Susan Cole went to great lengths to avoid jury duty. When she arrived at the courthouse — with curlers, mismatched shoes and deliberately botched makeup — she handed District Judge Anne Mansfield a sob story about domestic violence, military service and posttraumatic stress disorder. She was excused from jury duty, and if she'd been smart, that would've been the end of the

But instead of concentrating on the short run, look toward potential benefits down the road. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You have a gift for reviving projects that seem beyond repair. Use that same ability to restore a relationship that seems to have turned from loving to lifeless. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to be asked to use your combined wisdom and humor to resolve a problem. After all, folks not only value your advice, they also like how you give it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Most people consider you solid and steady. But you also can be quite capricious (which is a Latin word for “describing the behavior of Goats”) when it suits your needs. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) People treat you as you wish to be treated. So if you want a change in your relationship, make it happen. Also expect someone to reveal some long-held secrets. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Stay with the decision you made, despite a sudden torrent of advice to the contrary from well-meaning people. Remember: You know your needs better than anyone. matter. However, a few months later, a radio talk show's featured topic was avoiding jury duty, and Cole couldn't resist telling her story in detail. Unfortunately for her, Judge Mansfield also was listening, and Cole was charged with first-degree perjury. • Sometimes a group of rabbits will get really excited and start to jump around wildly. When that happens, it's called a binky. *** Thought for the Day: "Men rarely (if ever) managed to dream up a god superior to themselves.
