A View From the Back of the Class K.J. Carson is a friend of mine. We used to sit in the back of our high-

school classes and constantly crack up on the way to our C averages. We had this one teacher who was about 110 years old

who used to like to start his lectures with a line from the famous person he would be teaching us about that day. For instance, if he was teaching us about John Kennedy, he might start with "Ask not what your country can do for you ..." The day K.J. and I really became friends was the day that teacher walked in and declared "I am the

virgin queen!" I'm not sure if we ever really stopped laughing from that day since. Yeah, we didn't learn much from that class — and if I am ever asked who the virgin queen was, I will quickly answer "Mr. Reed" — but we did keep a running commentary over the years. K.J. is a burgeoning radio talk-show host. Over the years, we have floated the idea of me phoning in as "the token white guy" on his show (K.J. is black), but we never really saw it through. We've talked about doing podcasts for this column, but the furthest that ever got was me designing a nifty graphic for this column's Twitter handle: @ sportingview (be sure to follow ... Pete Rose does!). The other day, he broke his silence on Colin Kapaernick, the soon to be former NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin, as you may know, refuses to stand for the national anthem in protest of police brutality

1. In 2015, Eddie Rosario set a Minnesota Twins record for most triples by a rookie (15). Who had held the mark? 2. Who was the first third baseman elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame? 3. When was the last time before 2015 that the University of Oregon football team was not ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 poll? 4. The top two players on the NBA's career assists list are John Stockton (15,806) and Jason Kidd (12,091). Who is No. 3? 5. When Dallas' Jamie Benn won the Art Ross Trophy (top NHL scorer) in the 2014-15 season, it was the lowest total (87 points) by a league leader in a full season since when? 6. against persons of color. I personally don't really care what Colin does on the sideline ... I didn't know this was even a thing until K.J. opined. "What gives a man the right to tell another man how he should protest a perceived injustice? Our law frowns upon vigilante-style retaliation, and this isn't even close. I've heard and seen some strong language about a guy they don't personally know. They think they know him because he plays football on TV ... I wish some people would just admit they have a problem with Colin Kapaernick making $19 million a year. It's not about a flag, or disrespecting soldiers. That's trying to "dictate" what you believe he is doing instead of "listening" to what he is saying ... unless you don't want to hear that ... because that's your right too!" I can only add that it's fitting to remember what police officers go through

every day, too. As a former police-beat reporter and member of a family that has had more than a few cops in our ranks, it is important to remember that these officers are the ones kicking in the door to find your dead grandma in the morning, handling multiple murders before lunch, fighting rape, finding stolen tools (which, believe me, causes murders in a small town filled with day laborers and drunk and disorderly nights). There is no way to fleck off the instances of police brutality, but you can put me squarely on the side of sane reform. These people signed up to be heroes, and now it's time to help them out. Whether or not Colin can be helped from here on out is up to him. He went from a standout to someone now remembered for refusing to stand. The world hates change; yet it is the only thing that has brought progress. –Charles Kettering

GREENFIELD COUNTRY STORE MEAT AND CHEESE DELI SPECIALSS M

On Tuesday this week Obama will address the UN assembly for the last time. Only four months of his final term are left. An explosion rocked lower Manhattan New York Saturday night, reminding us again of the dangerous world we now live in. Another device, a pressure cooker, was found nearby. Also, a pipe bomb went off near a New Jersey charity race earlier on Saturday. This device was three pipe bombs taped together. At this time, although early, terrorism is being looked at. Were the two separate incidents related? Is this the new normal that Americans have to deal with? Twenty-nine were hurt in New York. No one was hurt in New Jersey because of a delay to the start of the race. On the Birther controversy, Trump held a news conference last Friday. He said, "Obama was born in the U.S. and Hillar y Clinton's 2008 campaign started the Birther rumor. Frankly, I really don't care who started it or who

finished it, as Trump claimed he did. I believe we have many serious issues in this country that need to be addressed. It's time for everyone to drop the bull and focus on the real problems. Let me remind everyone that Donald Trump isn't running against Barack Obama. He's running against Hillary Clinton, although, in my opinion, that is one and the same. Four years of Hillary Clinton is four more years of Barack Obama or worse. As for Trump's taxes being released, I would say he should release them as soon as Hillary releases the thousands of emails that disappeared. I've never been more disgusted with the liberal media. As I flip through the different networks, it's like they are all on script. It leaves me wondering, are they? And who gave them the script to follow? Two guesses, and the first one doesn't count! I can say without hesitation these two candidates, Trump and Clinton, have been treated very differ-

ently. On to the polls. Clinton supporters have reason for concern. Clinton is losing ground with young people, especially those under 30, the Millennial voters. Where are they going? These are the folks that brought Obama along with his catch phrase, "It's time for a change!" These people were Obama voters, not Democrat voters. This is also how Obama won over Romney. At this point, the fact is the gap is closing and Trump is in the lead in some swing states. It's not a good sign for Hillary this late in the race. The first of the three Presidential debates is next Tuesday, September 26, with moderator Lester Holt of NBC. Until next week.

Cooking With Lizzie

Fall Offerings You know fall is just around the corner when you start seeing mums and pumpkins everywhere, as well as roadside stands advertising apples, turnips, cabbage and potatoes. Faced with all the seasonal crops that the season offers, it's one of my favorite times to spend time in the kitchen, So here are some of my favorites featuring the season's rich flavors. Enjoy!

Turnip Greens With Turnip Roots 5 lbs. young, tender fresh turnip greens with roots (1 large bunch) 1/2 lb. salt pork, cut into 4 pieces 2 cups water

1 dried red pepper pod 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar Hot pepper sauce (optional)

Wash turnip greens thoroughly; drain and wash again. Drain well. Tear greens into bite-size pieces. Peel turnip roots and coarsely chop. Rinse salt pork. Combine salt pork, water, pepper pod, and salt in large Dutch oven over high heat; bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes. Remove and discard pepper pod. Stir in turnip greens; cover and cook 20 minutes. Add turnip roots and sugar; cover and cook 15 to 20 minutes, or until the greens and roots reach the desired degree of doneness. Remove and discard salt pork. Serve turnips with hot pepper sauce, if desired. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Creole Cabbage 2 slices bacon, cut into 1" pieces 3/4 cup chopped onion 3/4 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 (28 oz.) can whole tomatoes, undrained and chopped

By Larry Cox Mystery Box Q: I purchased a round tin container at a farm auction several years ago and wonder about its original purpose. It was sold with kitchen items. The lid is stamped with images of wheat and appears to be quite old. What do you think? — Audrey, Victorville, California A: This is just a guess, but I suspect you have a biscuit or cookie box. During the Victorian era — especially in farm houses — there were often rodents, and tin containers were used to keep baked goods fresh and prevent the contents from being contaminated by pests, including both mice and insects. I make this assumption since it was sold at a farm auction with kitchen items. *** Q: I have about 75 pieces of sheet music from the World War II-era. My aunt

Apple Orchard Salad 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 tsp. sugar Lettuce leaves

Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and toss gently to coat; drain. Combine apples, celery, raisins, and pecans, tossing gently. Combine mayonnaise and sugar, stirring well. Add mayonnaise mixture to apple mixture and stir gently. Serve over lettuce leaves. Yield: 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. used to sing with the Perry Como and Lawrence Welk orchestras, and the music is part of her collection. — Sandra, Port Orange, Florida A: Most sheet music from the 1940s seems to be priced in the $2 to $5 range, but there are always exceptions. For example, sheet music featuring film personalities such as Betty Grable, Alice Faye and Frank Sinatra are popular with collectors. As you might imagine, prices vary. Early pieces of ragtime, Black Americana and jazz compositions are among the most valuable. Wayland Bunnell is a sheet music expert and appraiser. His company has been in business since 1949, and I am certain he can help you. Contact Wahl at 30 South Macdonald, Mesa, AZ 85210; MesaTypewriterExchange@ yahoo.com; and 480-9643603. *** Q: I have a small collection of about a dozen cigarette lighters from the 1940s and '50s. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Wind Beneath My Wings What would our sojourn on earth be like without the effect of the wind? Man has learned to harness the power of the wind. For centuries majestic sailing ships plied the Seven Seas, their brilliant sails fluttering in the wind. Paul the apostle was an experienced traveler on sailing ships. He knew that without the wind his vessel would be dead in the water, but contrar y winds would wreak havoc on the ship. (Acts 27) I’ve had the privilege of flying with a pilot friend of mine and, oh, the exhilaration of the wind beneath our wings. I’ve experienced the thrill of flying in a hot-air balloon, but, as breathtaking as that may be, a hot-air balloon is totally dependent on the wind. Bette Midler sings the beautiful song — “Wind Beneath My Wings.” But Jesus reveals the true mystery and wonder of the wind beneath our wings — the life-giving Spirit at work in our lives. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the

kingdom of God . . . Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must be born again! The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:3-8) Jesus likens the wind to the Holy Spirit. The Greek word here is the same for wind and Spirit — “pnuema” meaning “current of air or breath, the Spirit of life.” Jesus describes the person and work of the Holy Spirit. To experience wind beneath your feet, understand and apply these functions of the Holy Spirit. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS INTIMATE GOD. He was involved in creation and the making of man. (Genesis 1:28; 2:7) He is a person of the Godhead and though invisible Spirit, speaks, comforts and can be lied to, quenched, and can be

communed with. As wind, the Spirit cannot be controlled, for He is God. He does an inner work of new birth in those who repent and believe. (John 3:3-1) THE HOLY SPIRIT ILLUMINATES. He brings enlightenment to the scriptures, leads into truth, convicts of sin, and convinces of righteousness. (John 15:2; 16:7-15) THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS. Only a person with breath in them is alive. When a person is “born again” they are indwelt by the Spirit. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (I Corinthians 3:16-17; I John 4:4) DL Moody observed, “Of one hundred men, one will read the Bible, the ninety-nine will read the Christian.” Be filled with the Spirit. THE HOLY SPIRIT IMPARTS. Jesus promised power from the Holy Spirit to be witnesses. (Acts 1:8) On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came into the upper room where believers were gathered as “a rushing mighty wind and cloven tongues

of fire” set upon each one. (Acts 2:4) The Holy Spirit imparts power, anointing, and gifts for service. (I Corinthians 12; 14) THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRES. He directs and inspires Spirit-filled believers to create, achieve, and work for the glory of God. He inspires by quickening the Word of God, through sanctified imaginations, dreams and visions, and an outpouring of God’s love in the heart. (Romans 5:5) THE HOLY SPIRIT INVITES. An interesting scripture is found toward the very end of the Bible “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take of the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17) The Spirit speaks through the church, the bride of Christ — Come and drink of the free water of everlasting life in Christ! You were destined to live with the wind beneath your wings.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) After much traveling this year, you’re due for some settled time with family and friends. Use this period to check out situations that soon will require a lot of serious decision-making. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Keep that keen Bovine mind focused on your financial situation as it begins to undergo some changes. Consider your money moves carefully. Avoid impulsive investments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll need to adjust some of your financial plans now that things are changing more quickly than you expected. All the facts you need haven’t yet emerged, so move cautiously. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal and professional relationships dominate this period. Try to keep things uncomplicated to avoid misunderstandings that can cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That elusive goal you’d been hoping to claim is still just out of reach. But something else has come along that could prove just as desirable, if only you would take the time to check it out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to get away for some much-needed rest and relaxation. You’ll return refreshed and ready to take on the workplace challenge that awaits you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Confidence grows as you work your way through some knotty situations.

Watch out for distractions from wellmeaning supporters that could slow things down. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Consider spending more time contemplating the possibilities of an offer before opting to accept or reject it. But once you make a decision, act on it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re in a very strong position this week to tie up loose ends in as many areas as possible. Someone close to you has advice you might want to heed. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Congratulations. This is the week you’ve been waiting for: After a period of sudden stops and fitful starts, your plans can now move ahead with no significant disruptions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re in an exceptionally strong position this week to make decisions on many still-unresolved matters, especially those involving close personal relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The new moon starts this week off with some positive movement in several areas. A special person becomes a partner in at least one of the major plans you’ll be working on. BORN THIS WEEK: You work hard and get things done. You also inspire others to do their best. You would do well heading up a major corporation. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The very first one was set up in Mexico City, back in 1539. • In the Talmud, a central text of Rabbinic Judaism, sneezing is called "pleasure sent from God." • The largest single dormitory in the world is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. With 4.8 miles of corridors and providing 33 acres of floor space, Bancroft Hall provides a

home for the school's entire brigade of 4,000 midshipmen. • Many people harbor a fear of snakes (which, incidentally, is known as ophidiophobia), but venomous bites and constricting squeezes aren't the only ways a snake can kill. For instance, in the 1990s a man in Iran, while trying to capture a snake, placed the butt of his shotgun against the snake's neck behind its head. In attempting to e s c ap e, t h e s n a ke wrapped the length of its body around the gun, pulling the trigger in the process — and killing its would-be captor. • According to historians, Native Americans who lived on the Pacific coast often weaned their babies on caviar. *** Thought for the Day: "Distrust any enterprise that requires new clothes." — Henry David Thoreau
