wish some people would just admit they have a problem with Colin Kapaernick making $19 million a year. It's not about a flag, or disrespecting soldiers. That's trying to "dictate" what you believe he is doing instead of "listening" to what he is saying ... unless you don't want to hear that ... because that's your right too!" I can only add that it's fitting to remember what police officers go through every day, too. As a former police-beat reporter and member of a family that has had more than a few cops in our ranks, it is important to remember that these officers are the ones kicking in the door to find your dead grandma in the morning, handling multiple murders before lunch, fighting rape, finding stolen tools (which, believe me, causes murders in a small town filled with day laborers and drunk and disorderly nights). There is no way to fleck off the instances of police brutality, but you can put me squarely on the side of sane reform. These people signed up to be heroes, and now it's time to help them out. Whether or not Colin can be helped from here on out is up to him. He went from a standout to someone now remembered for refusing to stand. On Tuesday this week Obama will address the UN assembly for the last time. Only four months of his final term are left. An explosion rocked lower Manhattan New York Saturday night, reminding us again of the dangerous world we now live in. Another device, a pressure cooker, was found nearby. Also, a pipe bomb went off near a New Jersey charity race earlier on Saturday. This device was three pipe bombs taped together. At this time, although early, terrorism is being looked at. Were the two separate incidents related? Is this the new normal that Americans have to deal with? Twenty-nine were hurt in New York. No one was hurt in New Jersey because of a delay to the start of the race. On the Birther controversy, Trump held a news conference last Friday. He said, "Obama was born in the U.S. and Hillary Clinton's 2008 campaign started the Birther rumor. Frankly, I really don't care

who started it or who finished it, as Trump claimed he did. I believe we have many serious issues in this country that need to be addressed. It's time for everyone to drop the bull and focus on the real problems. Let me remind everyone that Donald Trump isn't running against Barack Obama. He's running against Hillary Clinton, although, in my opinion, that is one and the same. Four years of Hillary Clinton is four more years of Barack Obama or worse. As for Trump's taxes being released, I would say he should release them as soon as Hillary releases the thousands of emails that disappeared. I've never been more disgusted with the liberal media. As I flip through the different networks, it's like they are all on script. It leaves me wondering, are they? And who gave them the script to follow? Two guesses, and the first one doesn't count! I can say without hesitation these two candidates, Trump and Clinton, have been treated very differently.

On to the polls. Clinton supporters have reason for concern. Clinton is losing ground with young people, especially those under 30, the Millennial voters. Where are they going? These are the folks that brought Obama along with his catch phrase, "It's time for a change!" These people were Obama voters, not Democrat voters. This is also how Obama won over Romney. At this point, the fact is the gap is closing and Trump is in the lead in some swing states. It's not a good sign for Hillary this late in the race. The first of the three Presidential debates is next Tuesday, September 26, with moderator Lester Holt of NBC. Until next week. • Use this old trick to keep white canvas sneakers clean: Make a solution of water and cornstarch by mixing a heaping tablespoon in a pint of water. Spray it on the canvas and let dry. It dries on the canvas and creates a barrier so that dirt doesn't stick to the weave of the fabric. You also can use a fabric sealant spray for white and other colors. • If you hang your pants on a hanger, you may have it all upside-down. Hang creased slacks clipped at the ankles. The weight of the waist keeps creases stiff, and wrinkles out. • Sweater weather is here! To keep your fuzzy

tops in shape, look no further than your medicine cabinet. Use a disposable razor to de-pill sweaters and keep them looking great. • This facial mask is good enough to eat. You might have a hard time deciding whether you want the facial or the snack: Mix together one mashed ripe banana with three tablespoons of sugar, and apply liberally to face. Leave it on for about three minutes, and rinse with warm water. Follow with your favorite moisturizer. • If you have a sticky zipper, try running a candle along the zipper face, then zipping it up and down a few times. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As the flood waters in Louisiana recede, shelters there are calling for assistance in caring for pets that were lost or abandoned when residents fled their homes. I want to help, but I feel a little insulted that many charities are just asking for money up front. I’m sure I could collect pet food or blankets for these shelters and mail them to the area. What’s your take? — Greg in El Paso, Texas DEAR GREG: While the seemingly constant emails and TV spots asking for money to help shelter animals can be annoying,

there are some very good reasons why cold hard cash is often the best option — particularly in large-scale disasters. First, shelters in a disaster area — and national organizations like the A m e r i c a n Hu m a n e As s o c i at i on or t h e Humane Society that pledge to help — need specific items, they need them in big quantities, and they need them yesterday. They don’t have time to sort through random donated items to find a few us abl e t h i ng s . ( For example, shelters don’t use clumping cat litter because it’s a health issue for kittens.) With cash donations, these organizations can buy exactly what they need and get it delivered quickly. Now, local shelters in your area may be OK with donated goods like old blankets, newspapers, unopened pet food and new toys. It’s important to

CENTRALIA PROJECT PRIDE JULY WINNERS Project Pride is a seasonal neighborhood recognition program sponsored by Keep Centralia Beautiful. The recognition is presented to homes and businesses that have made a notable contribution to their neighborhood through beautification and upkeep of their property. The City of Centralia has been divided into eight sections. One home in each section, along with one local business, will be presented with this honor during the months of May through December. This award is to those contributing to the beautification of their neighborhood. This year’s committee will make their tours around the city to choose the homes and one business each month. The homes chosen will be provided a sign for their yard for that month, a certificate and recognition in the Shoppers Weekly.

Thank you in advance for making a dedicated commitment to this program and your neighborhood. More people are taking pride in their yards and neighborhoods by putting time and effort into making their property a true asset to the community. After their hard work, they can enjoy the fruits of their toil and perhaps be recognized for helping make Centralia beautiful one neighborhood at a time. Centralia Clean and Green recently chose the properties pictured below as winners in the Project Pride program. Please feel free to call MiMi at 618-3224483 with the names and addresses of individuals you feel deserve this award. Thanks for helping Keep Centralia Beautiful. Pictured are the July 2016 winners.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Wind Beneath My Wings What would our sojourn on earth be like without the effect of the wind? Man has learned to harness the power of the wind. For centuries majestic sailing ships plied the Seven Seas, their brilliant sails fluttering in the wind. Paul the apostle was an experienced traveler on sailing ships. He knew that without the wind his vessel would be dead in the water, but contrary winds would wreak havoc on the ship. (Acts 27) I’ve had the privilege of flying with a pilot friend of mine and, oh, the exhilaration of the wind beneath our wings. I’ve experienced the thrill of flying in a hot-air balloon, but, as breathtaking as that may be, a hot-air balloon is totally dependent on the wind. Bette Midler sings the beautiful song — “Wind Beneath My Wings.” But Jesus reveals the true

mystery and wonder of the wind beneath our wings — the life-giving Spirit at work in our lives. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God . . . Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must be born again! The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:3-8) Jesus likens the wind to the Holy Spirit. The Greek word here is the same for w i n d an d Spi r it — “p n u e m a” m e a n i n g “current of air or breath, the Spirit of life.” Jesus describes the person and work of the Holy Spirit. To experience wind beneath your feet, understand and apply these functions of the Holy Spirit. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS INTIMATE GOD. He was involved in creation and the making of man.

(Genesis 1:28; 2:7) He is a person of the God-head and though invisible Spirit, speaks, comforts and can be lied to, quenched, and can be communed with. As wind, the Spirit cannot be controlled, for He is God. He does an inner work of new birth in those who repent and believe. (John 3:3-1) THE HOLY SPIRIT ILLUMINATES. He brings enlightenment to the scriptures, leads into truth, convicts of sin, and convinces of righteousness. (John 15:2; 16:7-15) THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS. Only a person with breath in them is alive. When a person is “born again” they are indwelt by the Spirit. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (I Corinthians 3:16-17; I John 4:4) DL Moody observed, “Of one hundred men, one will read the Bible, the ninety-nine will read the Christian.” Be filled with the Spirit. THE HOLY SPIRIT IMPARTS. Jesus promised power from the Holy Spirit to be witnesses. (Acts 1:8) On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came into the upper room where believers were gathered as “a

rushing mighty wind and cloven tongues of fire” set upon each one. (Acts 2:4) The Holy Spirit imparts power, anointing, and gifts for service. (I Corinthians 12; 14) THE HOLY SPIRIT INSPIRES. He directs and inspires Spirit-filled believers to create, achieve, and work for the glory of God. He inspires by quickening the Word of God, through sanctified imaginations, dreams and visions, and an out-pouring of God’s love in the heart. (Romans 5:5) THE HOLY SPIRIT INVITES. An interesting scripture is found toward the very end of the Bible “And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take of the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17) The Spirit speaks through the church, the bride of Christ — Come and drink of the free water of everlasting life in Christ! You were destined to live with the wind beneath your wings.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) After much traveling this year, you’re due for some settled time with family and friends. Use this period to check out situations that soon will require a lot of serious decision-making. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Keep that keen Bovine mind focused on your financial situation as it begins to undergo some changes. Consider your money moves carefully. Avoid impulsive investments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll need to adjust some of your financial plans now that things are changing more quickly than you expected. All the facts you need haven’t yet emerged, so move cautiously. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal and professional relationships dominate this period. Try to keep things uncomplicated to avoid misunderstandings that can cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That elusive goal you’d been hoping to claim is still just out of reach. But something else has come along that could prove just as desirable, if only you would take the time to check it out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to get away for some much-needed rest and relaxation. You’ll return refreshed and ready to take on the workplace challenge that awaits you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Confidence grows as you work your way through some knotty situations.

Watch out for distractions from wellmeaning supporters that could slow things down. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Consider spending more time contemplating the possibilities of an offer before opting to accept or reject it. But once you make a decision, act on it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re in a very strong position this week to tie up loose ends in as many areas as possible. Someone close to you has advice you might want to heed. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Congratulations. This is the week you’ve been waiting for: After a period of sudden stops and fitful starts, your plans can now move ahead with no significant disruptions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’re in an exceptionally strong position this week to make decisions on many still-unresolved matters, especially those involving close personal relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The new moon starts this week off with some positive movement in several areas. A special person becomes a partner in at least one of the major plans you’ll be working on. BORN THIS WEEK: You work hard and get things done. You also inspire others to do their best. You would do well heading up a major corporation. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The very first one was set up in Mexico City, back in 1539. • In the Talmud, a central text of Rabbinic Judaism, sneezing is called "pleasure sent from God." • The largest single dormitory in the world is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. With 4.8 miles of corridors and providing 33 acres of floor space, Bancroft Hall provides a

For instance, in the 1990s a man in Iran, while trying to capture a snake, placed the butt of his shotgun against the snake's neck behind its head. In attempting to e s c ap e, t h e s n a ke wrapped the length of its body around the gun, pulling the trigger in the process — and killing its would-be captor. • According to historians, Native Americans who lived on the Pacific coast often weaned their babies on caviar. *** Thought for the Day: "Distrust any enterprise that requires new clothes." — Henry David Thoreau
