Heeeere's Carson! I was eating a grilled octopus at Dimitri's in Philadelphia when I learned that the Eagles had traded Sam Bradford to the Vikings in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. All I could do was take a deep breath, because I knew I had to pace myself. The news made a walk across the street to the New Wave, a legendary Philadelphia sports bar, mandatory. I cannot honestly say whether or not Philadelphia has the best sports fans, but I can tell you that they come off like the perfect sports-fan stereotype you often see caricatured in sitcoms and film. In Philadelphia, the mere notion of a casual sports fan is abhorrent. You don't have to paint your face, but you must own at least one article of officially licensed clothing and you must get to the stadia off of I-95 at minimum once per year or you risk expulsion. To recap, tonight we learned that Sam

1. In 2015, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw tied a team record with a sixth consecutive season of 200plus strikeouts. Who else holds the mark? 2. Which of the following four left-handed pitchers appeared in the mo st m aj or- l e ag u e games: Tommy John, Jim Kaat, Sparky Lyle or Tug McGraw? 3. Name the school that has been ranked No. 1 in

Bradford, a former top pick in the draft, was traded to Minnesota, elevating the Eagle's firstround pick from this year, Carson Wentz, to the helm. Wentz, billed as a "smart" mobile quarterback with a cannon arm, put up very impressive numbers at North Dakota State. The Eagles worked very hard to explain this rationale to their fans, and for the most part the strategy seemed to work as most Eagle fans condoned the pick. Well, at least they didn't boo. Bradford was never really beloved in Philadelphia. Fans appreciated his talent but really disdained his fragility (yeah, and that's how they talk at the New Wave ... "You know something? I really disdain Bradford's fragility ... wanna shoot some darts?"). The guy always got hurt. So what do the Eagles do? They elevate a guy that got his ribs cracked open after completing 12 passes and missing three pre-season games to the starting position. He will be playing for rookie head coach Doug The Associated Press top-25 college football preseason poll the most times. 4. When was the last time before the 2015 NBA playoffs that the Washington Wizards swept a series? 5. When was the last time before 2016 that the St. Louis Blues made the conference finals in the NHL playoffs? 6. Who was the last rookie racer before Alexander Rossi in 2016 to win the Indianapolis 500? 7. Name the last Spanish female tennis player before Garbine

Pederson, a guy who brings great bonafides as a former Eagles QB and from his years of coaching the Kansas City Chiefs under former Eagle's head coach Andy Reid. For good measure, Pederson also brought along former Mizzou QB standout Chase Daniels to back Wentz up. If Pederson thought Missouri was the "Show Me" state, he has to know that Philadelphia brings that mentality to a completely new level. Vegas has them at 100-to-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, but they are loaded with talent, having signed Darren Sproles at running back and Rodney McLeod for their secondary. They have a great set of tight ends in Brent Celek and Zach Ertz. Still, even with Bradford, this season was considered to be a rebuilding year. What do they have now? A quick survey at the New Wave sets the tone. "All I can say is this, the Eagles just better win ... I'm not into this 'rebuilding' (expletive)," says a fan who hails from Pennsauken. "Let's see what this guy (Wentz) can do." That about sums it up. Looking for a great storyline (and great meal) to follow this season? On the whole, you'd rather be in Philadelphia. 2016 GIRL SCOUT NUT, CANDY AND MAGAZINE PROGRAM The 2016 Girl Scout Nut, C a n d y & Ma g a z i n e Program began Sept. 24 and runs through Oct. 15. Girl Scouts throughout southern Illinois will be taking orders for delicious nuts and candies, as well as magazines and they hope you will support them by making a purchase. “The Nut, Candy & Magazine (NCM) Program is an integral part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Girls gain life skills linked to leadership and financial literacy through hands-on experience with this program,” said Kelly Jansen, GSSI Director of Pro duct Program. “All of us at GSSI are excited to work with our girls and volunteers to have a successful Nut, C a n d y & Ma g a z i n e Program,” she added. “When you purchase nuts, candies or magazines from a Girl Scout, you will help her achieve her sales goals and learn valuable business skills,” Jansen added. The Girl Scout Nut, C a n d y & Ma g a z i n e Program generates immeasurable results for girls and their communities. Girls who participate in the 2016 Fall Product Program

benefit from “learning by earning” and develop five valuable life skills — goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. In addition, proceeds from the program help Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) recruit and train adult volunteers, provide financial assistance so Girl Scouting is available to all girls, improve and maintain camp properties and develop and deliver unique leadership program activities for girls. During the Nut, Candy & Magazine Program, girls will sell items such as Whole Cashews, Deluxe Pecan Clusters, Fruit Slices and English Butter Toffee. One item, Mint Treasures, will be sold in a special limited Girl Scout collectible tin. New this year is a one-pound container of Honey Roasted Mixed Nuts. In addition, hundreds of magazines will be available through QSP for those wishing to purchase a new subscription or renew an existing one. For more information about the items girls will be selling during the Nut, Candy & Magazine Program, please visit GSSI’s website at www.gsofsi.org.

The Girl Scout Mission is that Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. Girl Scouting is the place where girls experience the fun, friendship and power of girls together. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois serves approximately 13,000 girls and over 4,500 adult volunteers in more than 40 counties in southern Illinois. Girl Scouting has inspired more than 50 million girls and women since its founding in 1912. Girl Scouting is focused on providing a pre m i e r G i r l S c o ut Leadership Experience for girls in the 21st century, while ensuring the traditions and values that have been core to Girl Scouting since its beginning remain strong and relevant. GSSI is a Proud Partner of United Way. Also check them out at www.gsofsi.org or friend them on Facebook.

SMALL BUSINESS GROUP RECOGNIZES SEN. MCCARTER FOR EFFORTS TO PROMOTE THE ECONOMY AND JOB CREATION The Illinois Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB/Illinois) is recognizing Sen. Kyle McCarter for his legislative efforts and record of support promoting Illinois’ economy and job creation. “I appreciate the recognition by the NFIB, but it also reminds me of the frustration that is Springfield,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “Reforming how state government is administered, eliminating government red tape and removing the roadblocks to our economic revival are at the heart of my efforts for the past seven-plus years. It’s frustrating because the majority in control of the legislative process refuses to acknowledge the severity of our financial and economic problems.”

NFIB, the leading small business association, recognized McCarter with their ‘Guardian of Free Enterprise’ award, which is given to lawmakers “for their strong and consistent support of the state’s job creators in the Illinois Legislature.” Sen. McCarter said, as a small business employer, he sees first-hand how status quo government policies hamper Illinois’ economy and revival. “Illinois continues to struggle economically even though the so-called “Great Recession” ended in 2009, according to experts,” said McCarter. “Over the past seven years, Illinois’ job growth is a meager 6.6 percent. Meanwhile, over that same period, the national average for job growth among the 50 states is 10.6 percent.”

3

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

McCarter said government and e conomic reforms have been and will remain part of his legislative agenda. “We need real reform to make Illinois more competitive with other states so we can retain and attract new employers and jobs,” said McCarter. “We need to lower taxes and cut regulations that hamstring businesses and limit job creation. We need to make government more efficient and responsible. Other states made such changes with great success. A growing economy will create new opportunities for families. An increase in natural revenue growth will help the state maintain critical programs, pay its bills and begin to get us out of debt. We can do this. There is hope for Illinois. Let’s act!”

Forgive my senior moment in last week's column. I said the first of the three presidential debates was Tuesday, September 26; the actual day was Monday. I say "was" because, as you read this week's column, we've all formed a stronger opinion as to who we will be voting for, because the first debate is over. My guess is as good as yours. However, my belief is both will go in heavily prepared and that Donald Trump will give Hillary Clinton a huge challenge. But needless to say, I and millions will be glued to the tube, especially the CEO of Goldman Sachs. So it's the start of game on; the first of the three debates is over, and the gloves are off ! I will say if Clinton doesn't knock Trump out during the first debate, it's over for her. My prediction is Clinton will try to bait Trump. Even though you can't win a campaign with a debate, you certainly can lose one. Hillary Clinton has more baggage and corruption in her closet in a year than Trump has had in a lifetime! A final note on the debate: The Clinton campaign invited Mark Cuban, and Trump's campaign threatened to invite Gennifer Flowers. It's just a sign of the times to come; it's called dirty politics. In an interesting happening last week, Ted Cruz endorsed Donald Trump. So much for insulting my wife and daughters. So

much for political ambition. From my sources, Cruz is in trouble in his own backyard. So what does he do? Endorse Trump right before the debate! Do I think this move will help him? No. In my opinion, he committed political suicide at the Republican Convention, and that's not going to change. So what is it going to take for Trump to win? In this race he needs more African American and Hispanic voters. He's leading Clinton in the white male population and running slightly behind with the white female voters. Right before the debate Clinton and Trump were neck and neck, with the swing states leaning toward Trump. But I know polls can change rapidly and what will really count is starting after the first debate. On to the protests during the national anthem at football games. It leaves me trying to comprehend how anyone could respect this sport. Now before the calls, emails and letters start, it's not all the players but more than I care to say, and maybe it's not so much about the sport but some who play the sport. Since 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem before NFL preseason games, this movement has slowly spread across the courts and fields in the U.S. On Saturday,

S eptember 24, some Michigan football players raised their fists up in protest during the national anthem. Had I been in the audience I would have walked out. And to top it all, a California high school football team staged a bizarre "die-in" in protest during the singing of the national anthem. I've also seen pictures of students in the band dropping to their knees while playing the national anthem. What a disgrace! It makes me wonder where our country is headed! And why we aren't protesting the NFL! At the same time, Obama gave a speech at the opening of the new National Museum of African Americans in Washington D.C. while violent protests continue in Charlotte, North Carolina. The opening of this museum tells me how far we have come as a nation. Above all, we should never forget what all races of Americans have paid for love of country, and never accept disrespect, whether it is sitting out the national anthem, burning our flag or accepting paid violent protestors. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Q: I have some Chicago Cubs yearbooks from the 1950s. How and where can I sell them? — Janet, Oswego, Illinois A: I checked eBay and found dozens of Chicago Cubs yearbooks being offered for sale, including editions from 1948 ($35), 1949 ($26), 1950 ($20), 1955 ($27) and 1956 ($40). I suggest you sell your yearbooks there in order to get -- in my opinion -- the best possible price. *** Q: My late uncle loved paperback novels and managed to collect several hundred titles, mostly from

the 1940s and '50s. They are extremely interesting, and I understand some have become quite collectible. Can you recommend a good price guide? — Art, St. Charles, Missouri A: The mass-market paperback was introduced by Robert de Graff in 1938 with a special "Pocket Book" edition of "The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck. It was such a success that other titles quickly followed. There are several references, but I especially like the "Collectible Paperback Price Guide," by Gary Lovisi and published by Krause Books. It features up-to-date values for thousands of the most collect-

ible American mass-market paperbacks, each with three grades of condition. It also has more than 1,000 cover illustrations in full color. This nifty guide explains how to collect, value, buy and sell paperback books with special sections on cover art, key authors, important artists, hot series, pen names, how and what to collect, recommended dealers and book shows. It is $20 and should be a good resource for you and others who enjoy paperbacks. *** Q: I have a radio that I listened to as a child. I am now 76 years old. It is a Philco Model 39-85 with three knobs: One is the off/

You can extend your reach with the cardboard core of a roll of gift wrap. Just tape it to the end of your handle attachment. • "I have a weekly meet-up group of girlfriends. We pick a project to work on each season or

We each bring a load of old photos or our computer to each others' houses in turn, and have a great time going through them, organizing and putting them in albums. It is less overwhelming to do it with friends. Plus, we have fun!" — R.E. in New Hampshire • Use a Bundt pan to roast a chicken. Grease insides of pan. Simply season and prepare your bird, then slip the bird upright on the center, cavity down. Then fill the pan with veggies for a complete meal. Roast and enjoy. • Wipe down screens before replacing them with storm windows for the winter. Also, save yourself a lot of time and aggravation by labeling each screen with the location it came

Could you give me any information about it? — William, Litchfield Park, Arizona A: The model number is a good clue since it indicates that your radio was manufactured in 1939 and is identified as the production model 85. There were 20,050 of this model made with an original price of $52.50. For owners of Philco radios, I recommend an excellent Internet site, philcoradio.com/ gallery. Incidentally, the first Philco radio was manufactured in 1928. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. What’s His Name? Each generation throughout antiquity has had its superheroes. In my generation I was mesmerized by the television episodes of the Lone Ranger and Superman. Mankind has always had an innate longing for a superhero to rescue them. Stories of folk lore, fables, and fancy have filled the imagination of man. But the truth was realized when the invisible God, the creator of the universe, sent not a superhero, but a redeemer to the earth, who bore the express image of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit inspired ancient Agur, who penned Proverbs 30 to ask this astounding question, “Who has ascended into heaven or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name and what is His Son’s name, if you know?” (Proverbs 30:4) God has a Son. The prophet Isaiah revealed His name and His arrival to earth by being born of a virgin, “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) His name is Immanuel, which means, “God with us”. What is His name? Isaiah gives these

clues to His identity “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given . . . And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6-7) So far, we have discovered that God has a Son described by various names revealing His identity and His divinity. In the gospels we are introduced to the Son of God by the angel Gabriel, who was dispatched by God to announce his birth through the virgin Mary. “‘Don’t be afraid Mary,’ the angel told, her, ‘for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a Son and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever, his kingdom will never end!’” (Luke 1:26-38) What is His Son’s name? How does He impact your life? HE IS JESUS. “And you will name him Jesus.” It was a rather common name among the Jewish people. In the Hebrew it is Joshua or Jeshua (yeshua) meaning Jehovah is salvation. Jesus is found in every book of the Bible, types and foreshadowing, pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate redeemer. In His name there is salvation and forgiveness of sins.

“You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21) In Jesus’ name there is healing and deliverance. In Jesus’ name prayers are answered. (John 16:23-26) At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth.” (Philippians 2:6-11) HE IS THE SON OF THE MOST HIGH. The scriptures reveal adamantly and clearly that he is God, the Son of God. “He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” (Luke 1:32, 35) Isaiah referred to Him, among other names, as Mighty God. (Isaiah 9:6-7) HE IS THE KING OF ALL KINGS. He is referred to as the Son of David. (Luke 1:32) He will rule on the throne of David, on Mount Zion, forever. (Luke 1:32, 33) “Everlasting God” is a term of deity. HE IS THE HOLY ONE. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit through the virgin Mary. He is totally God and totally man, but He is untainted by sin. All creation worships Him, for He is holy. (Luke 1:35; Revelation 5:6-14) Do you need a miracle in your life? The angel Gabriel told the virgin Mary, “For nothing is impossible with God.’ (Luke 1:38) “What is His name? What is His Son’s name?” (Proverbs 30:4) His name is Jesus! I saw this powerful quote of Oswald Chambers on Facebook, “When once you have seen Jesus, you can never be the same.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cooking With Lizzie

Down To Earth Soups

In the fall of the year, I head to the kitchen. Time spent there cooking became therapy for me years ago. It keeps my mind off the everyday woes of the world, keeping my hands busy. "Happy hands are busy hands." Who hasn't heard that favorite phrase! It keeps life simple for me. Cooking is far from complicated. In the fall and winter I love homemade soup, and when home I keep a pot simmering on the back burner of the stove. Served along with a slice of fresh homemade bread, there is nothing better and it brings you down to earth. I start with homemade chicken broth. I make it and freeze it for future flavoring for everything from chicken and noodles to homemade soups.

Homemade Chicken Broth

1 (4- 5 lb.) roasting chicken 2 medium onions, quartered 2 large carrots, halved 2 ribs celery, halved 1 green bell pepper, halved 1/2 cup fresh parsley sprigs

6 whole cloves 2 bay leaves 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper 3 -3½ quarts water

Place chicken, including neck and giblets (but not liver), in large stockpot. Add rest of ingredients. Water should cover chicken completely. Cover and bring to boil over high heat; then skim off froth as it forms on top. Reduce heat and simmer 2 hours. Remove chicken from pot, allow to cool a bit, then remove meat and skin, reserving meat for another use (soup salad, or sandwich filling). Return bones and skin to pot. Simmer broth, covered, 2 hours more. Strain broth through sieve into bowl, pressing vegetables and bones with rubber spatula to extract any liquid. Chill broth overnight in refrigerator and skim off fat. Freeze any stock that will not be used within 2 to 3 days in 1-quart containers. Makes 8 – 9 cups.

Chicken Corn Soup

6 T. (3/4 stick) butter, or rendered chicken fat 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup finely chopped celery 6 T. all-purpose flour 2 cups homemade chicken broth 1 (1 lb.) can cream-style corn

3/4 cup milk 3/4 cup half-and-half 2 T. shredded carrot 1 T. finely minced fresh parsley 1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg, rounded 1/8 tsp. black pepper 1½ cups very coarsely shredded cooked chicken

2 Locations To Serve You!

In large saucepan, cook butter, onion, and celery over medium heat 3 minutes. Stir in flour, and cook 5 to 6 minutes longer, or until mixture is golden. Add broth, and whisk until smooth, raising heat a bit. Add remaining ingredients except chicken, then lower heat and simmer 3 minutes. Add chicken just before serving; allow soup to stand a few minutes to heat chicken pieces. Makes approximately 6 servings.

Bean Soup

1 lb. navy beans 3 qts. water 1 tsp. salt Pinch of baking soda 1/2 cup shredded carrot 1 cup chopped celery 2 medium onions, chopped 2 bay leaves

1½ lbs. ham meat Ham bone Leftover ham drippings 1 cup mashed boiled potato 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1/2 tsp. dried thyme (opt.) 2 T. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

In large soup kettle, combine beans, water, salt and baking soda. Bring to boil, cover, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat, skim off foam, re-cover, and let stand 2 hours. (The beans can also be soaked overnight if you prefer.) Add remaining ingredients except parsley, and simmer, covered, about 1½ to 2 hours. Watch beans, for cooking time will vary and beans should not get mushy. Remove ham bone, then dice any overly large pieces of meat and return to soup. Add parsley just before serving. This soup freezes very well. Makes 6 servings.

Country Potato Soup

8 slices lean bacon 1/4 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped onion 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut in 1" cubes (about 3 cups) 2½ cups water 1 bay leaf 1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg, rounded 1/4 tsp. dried marjoram, rounded (opt.) 1/4 tsp. celery salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 cup milk 1 T. Worcestershire sauce 2 T. finely minced fresh parsley

Chop bacon coarsely. In deep soup kettle, saute bacon, celery, and onion over medium heat until onion is golden, about 5 minutes. Add potatoes, water, and seasonings; bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Mash potatoes slightly; about one-quarter of the cubes should still be whole. Remove bay leaf. Add milk, Worcestershire sauce, and parsley, and bring again to boil. Serve hot. Makes 4 – 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. September Is National

SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH E

very year family and friends lose a loved one to suicide. We as parents, family members, and community leaders need to work together to decrease the statistics of the suicide rate. According to The National Suicide Prevention Life Line, every year millions of Americans are affected directly by more than 37,000 suicides and hundreds of

thousands of attempted suicides. They also stated on their website that the risk factors are often confused with warning signs of suicide, and frequently suicide prevention materials mix the two into lists of “what to watch for." Risk factors, characteristics that make it more likely a person may consider suicide, include mental, anxiety, substance abuse, and alcohol abuse disorders. Another risk factor is having a history

in your family or having lost a loved one. Protective factors are characteristics that make a person less likely to consider suicide, such as effective clinical care, restricted access to lethal means of suicide, and strong family and community support. Suicide touches everyone of all ages, income, racial, ethnicity and religious groups. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teenagers (CDC2010). In addition, each year about 4,700

young people ages 14-24 die by suicide (CDC2010) and about 1 out of 6 high school students seriously consider attempting suicide (CDC 2012); 1 out of 13 high school students consider attempting suicide one or more times. As teachers you have an important role to play. You have day to day contact with many young people and are able to observe the students' behaviors and act on it when you suspect a student may be at risk. Teachers can play an

active role in suicide prevention by fostering the emotional well being of all students and not just those at risk. Teachers can promote the feeling of belonging and being connected. Law enforcement and emergency medical service providers can also play a role in the prevention by identifying people who may be at risk or have attempted suicide in the past. And our faith community leaders can play a role by helping those who are

in their congregation and throughout the community when they are showing signs of suicidal tendencies. Suicide touches everyone. However, if we work together to address the suicide problem we have in our community then maybe we can get a handle on these sad statistics. For more information on suicide prevention you can go to www.sprc.org or call 1-877-GETS PRC (4387772).

Cats in the Window DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing this not long after returning from the vet, where my cat “Trix” was treated after falling from my apartment’s secondfloor window. Fortunately his injuries aren’t serious and he’ll recover, but it was a scary day that was all my fault. Can you please tell your readers to make sure their cats cannot push through the screen windows? Many cats like to sit on the windowsill and watch the outside world, but if something attracts them or if they lean up against a loose screen, it could give way — which is what happened Washington County Animal Control’s

DEAR JAN: Thank you! I’m glad Trix will be OK. Readers, screen windows often aren’t secured solidly enough to keep a cat from pushing or falling through one. Cats also can tear the screen with their claws (and sometimes get their claws tangled in the screen, another scary moment). The damage from a small screen rip may not seem like much, but over time constant clawing can open up the screen entirely. To keep your cat safe, try keeping the lower casement of windows shut, and screen the upper casement so you can open that part to let air in. If you have a screenedin porch that your cat likes sitting in, make sure the screen stays in good repair so it can’t escape. Keep your cat even safer around windows by

by Samantha Weaver • It was ancient Stoic philosopher Epictetus — who served as a slave to a freedman named Epaphroditos, who was himself a secretary to the infamous Roman emperor Nero — who made the following observation: "Men are not disturbed by things, but the view they take of things." (In an interesting side note, upon hearing that quotation, a professor of psychology named Herb Kimmel reportedly responded: "What about things like bullets?") • The next time you're outside enjoying a morning
