Fun Halloween Recipes October is in full swing. Where did the summer go? The next thing you know little ghosts and goblins will be knocking at the door saying, "Trick or Treat!" But if you have little ones at home, it's the perfect time to make happy memories. Let your imagination run free and put a happy face on Halloween. Add these tried and true recipes below to your fun activities. Serve Jack'O'Lantern Burgers with a side of carrot sticks, celery sticks and ripe olives with a favorite dip. Add Spiced Hot Apple Cider and Goblin Cookies to complete this fun Halloween meal.
Goblin Cookies 1 cup butter 1 cup light brown sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1¾ cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 T. milk 3 cups quick-cooking oats (uncooked) 1 cup dark raisins
Cream butter until soft; gradually add brown sugar, beating until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together; gradually stir into egg mixture. Stir in milk and oatmeal; mix well and chill for a few hours. Roll out dough on a sheet of waxed paper until a little less than 1/4 inch thick. With a jack-o'-lantern cutter, cut out cookies and place about 1 inch apart on a lightly greased baking sheet. Use raisins to make eyes, nose and mouth on each cookie. Bake in a preheated 375° oven 10 minutes. About 40 cookies. Note: About 40 cookies. NOTE: Not all of the cookies need be shaped as jack-o-lanterns. Try a variety of cookie cutters to bring out all the goblins — cats, witches and ghosts.
Jack-O'-Lantern Burgers 2 lbs. ground beef 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup tomato juice 8 slices American cheese Break up beef with a fork. Handling meat lightly, mix in salt, pepper and tomato juice. Gently form into 8 patties. Cook on a lightly greased hot skillet — for medium — rare, cook 5 minutes on one side until well browned, then turn and brown other side 3 minutes. Meanwhile, cut jack-o'-lantern eyes, nose and mouth shapes out of each slice of cheese. Place a cut-out cheese slice on each patty and return to skillet to allow cheese to melt, cooking about 2 minutes longer. Serve open-face on hamburger buns or toasted English muffins. 8 servings. NOTE: Allow for a little selfexpression and have each youngster cut out the face for his or her burger.
Spiced Hot Apple Cider 2 quarts apple cider or apple juice 1 cinnamon stick 6 whole cloves
1 tsp. whole allspice 1/4 cup brown sugar 8 orange slices (optional)
Combine all ingredients except orange slices in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Simmer gently 5 to 10 minutes to extract all the flavor from the spices. Strain into mugs and garnish each with an orange slice. 8 servings ( 1 cup each). More Halloween recipes next week. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. BALLOONS OVER MT. VERNON AND FLY IN BY DELOREAN COLEMAN
Hot air balloons took to the skies in Mt. Vernon, Illinois from Friday, Octob er 14 through Sunday, October 16. Additional weekend activities included remote control boat racing at the airport lake; inflatables and an aviation education zone for the kids; a concert by the Presswoods; and much, much, more. There was also a variety of vendor and crafter booths. Admission and parking were free throughout the weekend. I had the opportunity to take a media flight with Kevin Witzel in his balloon "Nothin' But A Breeze" at the Mt. Vernon Airport. Kevin and his wife Jennifer were a blast to learn the ballooning ropes from. I got the chance to set up and fill the balloon with air, take a flight, and help pack the balloon back up in the trailer. I learned that early

mornings and mid-evenings were ideal flight times with little to no wind. Most balloon pilots like to fly with winds under 8 m.p.h. because it's easier to control the balloon. Kevin has been crewing and piloting for over 18 years. He doesn't do many shows throughout the year but loves to fly his balloon when the weather is ideal.
Balloon crews and attendees help the pilots fill their balloons with air. Shopper's Weekly Staff Photos

ILLINOIS LAW BECOMES MODEL FOR NATION An Illinois ban on synthetic drugs might be adopted by other states thanks in part to the endorsement of the policy by the American Legislative
Exchange Council (ALEC), an association of state lawmakers from across the nation. The Illinois law, which took effect this year, was introduced in 2015 by
State Sen. Kyle McCarter. “A simple Internet search for ‘synthetic drugs’ will turn up countless numbers of news stories from around the nation about how these
drugs shatter lives,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “Synthetic drugs are a real problem and a serious threat to the lives of teens and young adults, with
dangerous side effects. I had the opportunity to present the Illinois legislation (Senate Bill 1129) to ALEC at their recent meeting in Indianapolis. They adopted the law as a model policy for all states.” Synthetic or designer street drugs are commonly known by names such as K-2, Spice, Yucatan Fire, Double X, Scooby Doo and others. They are often purchased at convenience stores as an over-the-counter product. And while the labels often carry a disclaimer ‘Not for Human Consumption,’ such statements will no longer qualify as a ‘way out’ for the makers. Getting rid of the label’s liability loophole is a key component of the new Illinois law and ALEC’s model policy based on the law. “The people who manufacture these harmful substances label them with catchy names and colorful packaging to entice children to tr y them. Unfortunately, there have been countless numbers of teens and young adults who suffered severe reactions, including suicidal thoughts, confusion, violent behavior, hallucinations and chest pains,” said McCarter. “Illinois families are not alone in dealing with this threat. These drugs have wide distribution across the nation, in both small towns
5
and big cities.” Synthetic drugs are dangerous because they are cheaper to purchase. They mimic the effects of marijuana, cocaine and meth, but with higher potency and significantly more danger to the user. Previous legislative efforts in Illinois to ban them, including socalled ‘synthetic marijuana’ and ‘bath salts,’ proved to have limited effect because those laws targeted specific formulas of the designer drugs. In recent years, illicit drug makers, some who have operated out of homes, simply altered a banned formula and sold a revised version of the drugs. The Illinois ban makes the entire chemical structure illegal, which also bans all future variations of the synthetics known as ‘cannabinoids’ and ‘cathinones.’ A similar measure was first made law in Rhode Island in 2013. “Serving in the super minority in Illinois has its challenges. But this issue has nothing to do with politics. Most legislators – regardless of party – recognize that the drug problem in America is killing the next generation,” McCarter said. “As Senate Bill 1129 made its way through the legislative process in Springfield, it picked up bipartisan sponsorship and passed with unanimous support.”

Pets In Need ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re moving from a relatively stable situation to one that appears to be laced with perplexity. Be patient. You’ll eventually get answers to help clear up the confusion around you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A vexing situation tempts you to rush to set it all straight. But it’s best to let things sort themselves out so that you can get a better picture of the challenge you’re facing. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Financial matters could create some confusion, especially with a torrent of advice pouring in from several sources. Resist acting on emotion and wait for the facts to emerge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That goal you’ve set is still in sight and is still in reach. Stay with the course that you’re on. Making too many shifts in direction now could create another set of problems. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It might be time to confront a trouble-making associate and demand some answers. But be prepared for some surprises that could lead you to make a change in some long-standing plans. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. You’re making great progress in sorting out all that confusion that kept you from making those important decisions. You’re on your way now. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A difficult experience begins to ease. That’s the good news. The not-so-
good news is a possible complication that could prolong the problem awhile longer. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your self-confidence gets a much-needed big boost as you start to unsnarl that knotty financial problem. Expect some help from a surprising source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Congratulations. Any lingering negative aftereffects from that not-so-pleasant workplace situation are all but gone. It’s time now to focus on the positive. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your self-confidence grows stronger as you continue to take more control of your life. Arrange for some well-earned fun and relaxation with someone special. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) As usual, you’ve been concerned more about the needs of others than your own. You need to take time for yourself so that you can replenish all that spent energy. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Stronger planetary influences indicate a growing presence of people eager to help you navigate through the rough seas that might mark your career course. BORN THIS WEEK: You can balance emotion and logic, which gives you the ability to make choices that are more likely than not to prove successful. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

• SALARY & COMMISSION • PAID VACATION AND SICK DAYS The elections are only 21 days away, but who's counting? I am. This election cycle is like no other I've seen. It's been a civil war with weapons of lies, cheating, intentional misleading, scandals, corruption, and slander. Politics at its dirtiest. I've personally witnessed families split down the middle, and friendships fall apart — never to be repaired in this lifetime —over not being able to agree to disagree. It's all so sad. I have personally been called a Hillary hater, which simply is not true. The truth is I'm not a Hillary supporter for good reasons, starting with a 30 year track record of deceit and corruption. But what's even sadder is the U.S. has become a country divided under this current administration —which Hillary Clinton is part of — and, of course, it's all with the liberal media's help as many are beginning to point out. A prime example: They barely covered what Ms. Clinton said about open borders and open trade; that she and Bill couldn't relate to the average person because of their great wealth; and other leaks like saying an environmental group should "get a life" because they asked her view on getting rid of fossil fuels. Instead, the liberal media spent 95% of their time on trumped-up
alleged sexual assault charges against Donald Trump. For instance, let's look at 74-year-old Jessica Leeds, who said, "Trump fondled me for 15 minutes. His hands were all over me. When he moved to below the waist I objected." This is a woman that the New York Times felt was credible! Really! As an old school reporter, I wouldn't have just walked away from this one, I would have run. I can assure you with most of the women I know, including myself, that kind of behavior wouldn't have gone past the first 15 seconds. It leaves me wondering how much Leeds was paid by the Clintons! To my way of thinking, instead of all the reporting on allegations, they should be reporting real news. Last week the lead story should have been the USS Mason was fired on again. The U.S. Navy destroyer was in international waters. Although the ship was not struck, this is the third time in the last week. The last attempted attack was on Saturday from off the coast of Yemen. Instead of the trash talk on CNN, NBC, ABC, MSNBC and CBS, there is serious news to report. And the latest attempts to kill Americans were not carried out without the consent of Iran, make no mistake, leaving me again to say the deal with Iran was a flop. Just a footnote, both Obama's and Hillary
Clinton's right hand women were born in Iran. Do some research. Another story totally ignored last week: Vice President Biden threatened Russia when he said, "Expect retaliations for cyber attacks." Nothing like telling the enemy what you're going to do. Oh well, some get it, some don't. At this point I don't think anyone is going to change their mind. But what everyone needs to understand is this time you're voting for the future direction of this country for your children and your grandchildren. I'm with Condoleezza Rice when she tweeted last week one word, "Enough!" Let's get back to real news, not B.S. from the Clinton camp. On to the third and final debate on Wednesday, October 19 in Las Vegas with Moderator Chris Wallace from FOX News. I think the first debate was won by Clinton. The second debate was a draw. But trust I will be in front of the boob tube watching FOX News, the only network, in my opinion, that's not in George Soros' pocket at this time. Until next week. * Display posters and Red Ribbons on the inside and outside of your buildings * Place a Red Ribbon in your advertisements and monthly statements.
R
ed Ribbon Week is approaching and some people may be unaware of what it is. This year’s theme is YOLO Be Drug Free # youonlyliveonce. Red Ribbon Week is an opportunity for people and communities to come together and take a stand against the drug problems we face. It is a way to show your personal commitment to a drug free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon. Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31,
2016. It started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as the symbol for intolerance of drug use. The National Family Partnership is the sponsor for National Red Ribbon Week Celebration. They help people all over the world come together to keep everyone young, old and in between safe and healthy, and to have a drug-free country.
Here are some of the ways we all can celebrate this wonderful event. SCHOOLS * Plan essays and poster contests * Decorate the inside and outside of your buildings * Organize a Red Ribbon Rally * Have a Mile of Quarters Campaign

EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
A Visitation of God One of the most tragic occurrences in life would be to miss out on a visitation of God. Can you imagine what it would be like if a king and his entourage were to stop by your house for a visit but you were not home or too busy or distracted to answer the door and welcome him in? You would have missed the most awesome visitation of a lifetime. The scriptures reveal that some have “entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:2) They were unaware of a divine visitation in their midst. God has always had times of visiting his people with his tangible presence. Peter preached about “the times of refreshing that shall come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19) Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. But many rejected him and others did not recognize his divine visitation. “And when he was come near, he beheld the city and wept over it. ‘If thou hast known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thy

eyes.’” Jesus then gave a prophetic word about the city, “And they shall lay thee even with the ground and thy children with-in thee . . . because thou knowest not the time of thy visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44) The destruction of Jerusalem was fulfilled in 70 AD just as Jesus said it would happen. Don’t miss out on a visitation of God in your life; that could be tragic. Apply these seven divine principles found in Luke 19 to experience a visitation of God. PROCLAIM THE GO OD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST. (Luke 19:1-9) When Jesus passed through Jericho there was a rich taxcollector who was determined to see Jesus. The great crowd of people prevented him from getting a view of Jesus, so he climbed up a tree. Jesus looked up and saw him and said, “Zacchaeus, make haste and
come down; for today I must abide at your house.” (Luke 19:5) The good news is that Jesus was crucified on a tree “to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) It doesn’t matter whether one is a wealthy sinner or a poor sinner; at the foot of the cross is a level playing field. To experience a visitation of God we must do what Zacchaeus did. “And he made haste and came down; and received him joyfully.” (Luke 19:6) Zacchaeus experienced repentance and transformation. (Luke 19:7-9) PURPOSE IN YOUR HEART TO MAKE G O D’ S M I S S I O N YOURS. “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) When you seek the king’s purposes you become a candidate for a divine visitation of the Holy Spirit’s empowerment. (Acts 1:8) PARTICIPATE IN HIS KINGDOM WORK. Jesus told a parable of a king who entrusted each of his s er vants wit h ten pounds of silver to invest for him while he went on a long journey. (Luke 19:12-27) When
the king returned, he called for an accounting. The king rewarded them according to their ability and faithfulness in the king’s business. But the wicked, lazy servant made no investments but hid his talents. The king took what he had and gave to the other faithful servants. Jesus taught a universal principle: use it or lose it. “For everyone which has shall be given; and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him.” (Luke 19:26) Put what you have into God’s hand and miracle power will be manifested. A little boy gave his sack lunch of two fish and five little loaves of bread and Jesus blessed it and fed over 5,000 men plus the women and children. Participate in God’s kingdom work by putting what you have into his hands and get ready for a divine visitation. Don’t miss out on a visitation of God, be aware of his divine presence. (Continued next week.) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
