The 1960s era loved majesty. The Kennedy White House was dubbed "Camelot" by the press, Johnny Carson had started his 30-year reign on late-night television, and golf had its very own "king," Arnold Palmer. Palmer came from humble beginnings. Born in the steel town of Youngstown, Ohio, his family migrated to Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It was there, at the Latrobe Country Club, that he began his apprenticeship under the watchful guidance of his father, the club's groundskeeper turned club pro. He did not immediately seize the crown, opting instead for a college golf scholarship at Wake Forest. And he didn't have to seize the crown, the advent of sports television programming coronated him right from the start. He was a lock for the role. Palmer was handsome, well-dressed, athletic, humble yet friendly, instantly personable and giving of his time and attention with

just about anyone he held court with. And he was golf 's first true modernday type of superstar. He was the first golfer to sign with an international agent, the game's first millionaire, the game's most familiar face. In 1962, the year he won his third of four Masters, he graced more front-page magazine covers than Jim Beatty and Wilt Chamberlain, the guys who broke the four-minute mile and scored 100 points in a basketball game, respectively. James Bond even name checks him in "Goldfinger." Palmer's reign was undisputed between the years of 1960-63, when he won 29 tournaments. Though guys like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player soon would take over the trophy cases, they never took away his mantle as the game's most popular player, which lasted well into the next century. He was a king who had many clubs. He was a Freemason. He owned 10,000 golf clubs, but was known best for the Dynapowered Fluid Field Wilson one-iron that he

famously wielded, a club that most people leave out of their bags and their lives, for that matter. He bought his father's club in Latrobe and designed 200 other golf courses of his own. He was a king who had his own army. Throngs of fans, "Arnie's Army," traipsed after their hero, hole after hole. He was a man of the people. It has been said that he lost more than a few championships on the last hole by losing concentration after saying hello to an old friend in the gallery. And he was a benevolent king, signing his full name on autographs, lending his name to charities and benefits the world over. He has a delicious beverage named after him. No other golfer, no other athlete (unless you count Shirley Temple's tap dancing as a sport), has that honor. You go into a bar and try to order a Sam Snead or Ben Hogan, and see what you get in return. Louis L'amour once said, "Because a man plays a king superbly well does not mean that he would make a good king." Well, Arnold Palmer wasn't a good king — he was a great king, and it's very sad to see him go. Long live the king. KEVIN THE QUILTER LECTURE AND TRUNK SHOW “Invite your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews into your creative work space with you. Expose them to artistry and creativity. You never know what seeds you are planting or when they will be sowed. My grandmother did to me at a young age, and I can’t thank her enough for it now!” said Keven the Quilter at this month’s Happy Heart Quilt Guild Meeting. Presenting a lecture and trunk show, Kevin the Quilter provided the guild with an exciting program that portrayed his journey in quilting beginning at a very young age.

Fun Halloween Recipes October is in full swing. Where did the summer go? The next thing you know little ghosts and goblins will be knocking at the door saying, "Trick or Treat!" But if you have little ones at home, it's the perfect time to make happy memories. Let your imagination run free and put a happy face on Halloween. Add these tried and true recipes below to your fun activities. Serve Jack'O'Lantern Burgers with a side of carrot sticks, celery sticks and ripe olives with a favorite dip. Add Spiced Hot Apple Cider and Goblin Cookies to complete this fun Halloween meal.

Goblin Cookies 1 cup butter 1 cup light brown sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1¾ cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 T. milk 3 cups quick-cooking oats (uncooked) 1 cup dark raisins

Cream butter until soft; gradually add brown sugar, beating until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together; gradually stir into egg mixture. Stir in milk and oatmeal; mix well and chill for a few hours. Roll out dough on a sheet of waxed paper until a little less than 1/4 inch thick. With a jack-o'-lantern cutter, cut out cookies and place about 1 inch apart on a lightly greased baking sheet. Use raisins to make eyes, nose and mouth on each cookie. Bake in a preheated 375° oven 10 minutes. About 40 cookies. Note: About 40 cookies. NOTE: Not all of the cookies need be shaped as jack-o-lanterns. Try a variety of cookie cutters to bring out all the goblins — cats, witches and ghosts.

Gently form into 8 patties. Cook on a lightly greased hot skillet — for medium — rare, cook 5 minutes on one side until well browned, then turn and brown other side 3 minutes. Meanwhile, cut jack-o'-lantern eyes, nose and mouth shapes out of each slice of cheese. Place a cut-out cheese slice on each patty and return to skillet to allow cheese to melt, cooking about 2 minutes longer. Serve open-face on hamburger buns or toasted English muffins. 8 servings. NOTE: Allow for a little selfexpression and have each youngster cut out the face for his or her burger.

Spiced Hot Apple Cider 2 quarts apple cider or apple juice 1 cinnamon stick 6 whole cloves

1 tsp. whole allspice 1/4 cup brown sugar 8 orange slices (optional)

Combine all ingredients except orange slices in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Simmer gently 5 to 10 minutes to extract all the flavor from the spices. WINDOWS AND SIDING

One of the most tragic occurrences in life would be to miss out on a visitation of God. Can you imagine what it would be like if a king and his entourage were to stop by your house for a visit but you were not home or too busy or distracted to answer the door and welcome him in? You would have missed the most awesome visitation of a lifetime. The scriptures reveal that some have “entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:2) They were unaware of a divine visitation in their midst. God has always had times of visiting his people with his tangible presence. Peter preached about “the times of refreshing that

shall come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19) Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. But many rejected him and others did not recognize his divine visitation. “And when he was come near, he beheld the city and wept over it. ‘If thou hast known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thy eyes.’” Jesus then gave a prophetic word about the city, “And they shall lay thee even with the ground and thy children with-in thee . . . because thou knowest not the time of thy visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44) The destruction of Jerusalem was fulfilled in 70 AD just as Jesus said it would happen. Don’t miss out on a visitation of God in your life; that could be tragic. Apply these seven divine principles found in Luke 19 to experience a visitation of God. PROCLAIM THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

CHRIST. (Luke 19:1-9) Whe n Je sus p ass e d through Jericho there was a rich tax-collector who was determined to see Jesus. The great crowd of people prevented him from getting a view of Jesus, so he climbed up a tree. Jesus looked up and saw him and said, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for today I must abide at your house.” (Luke 19:5) The good news is that Jesus was crucified on a tree “to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) It doesn’t matter whether one is a wealthy sinner or a poor sinner; at the foot of the cross is a level playing field. To experience a visitation of God we must do what Zacchaeus did. “And he made haste and came down; and received him joyfully.” (Luke 19:6) Zacchaeus experienced repentance and transformation. (Luke 19:7-9) PURPOSE IN YOUR H E A RT TO M A K E GOD’S MISSION YOURS. “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) When you seek the king’s purposes you become a candidate for a divine visitation of the Holy Spirit’s empowerment. (Acts 1:8) PARTICIPATE IN HIS KINGDOM WORK. Jesus

told a parable of a king who entrusted each of his servants with ten pounds of silver to invest for him while he went on a long journey. (Luke 19:12-27) When the king returned, he called for an accounting. The king rewarded them according to their ability and faithfulness in the king’s business. But the wicked, lazy servant made no investments but hid his talents. The king took what he had and gave to the other faithful servants. Jesus taught a universal principle: use it or lose it. “For everyone which has shall be given; and from him that has not, even that he has shall be taken away from him.” (Luke 19:26) Put what you have into God’s hand and miracle power will be manifested. A little boy gave his sack lunch of two fish and five little loaves of bread and Jesus blessed it and fed over 5,000 men plus the women and children. Participate in God’s kingdom work by putting what you have into his hands and get ready for a divine visitation. Don’t miss out on a visitation of God, be aware of his divine presence. The elections are only 21 days away, but who's counting? I am. This election cycle is like no other I've seen. It's been a civil war with weapons of lies, cheating, intentional misleading, scandals, corruption, and slander. Politics at its dirtiest. I've personally witnessed families split down the middle, and friendships fall apart — never to be repaired in this lifetime —over not being able to agree to disagree. It's all so sad. I have personally been called a Hillary hater, which simply is not true. The truth is I'm not a Hillary supporter for good reasons, starting with a 30 year track record of deceit and corruption. But what's even sadder is the U.S. has become a country divided under this current administration —which Hillary Clinton is part of — and, of course, it's all with the liberal media's help as many are beginning to point out. A prime example: They barely covered what Ms. Clinton said about open borders and open trade; that she and Bill couldn't relate to the average person because of their great wealth; and other leaks like saying an environmental group should "get a life" because they asked her view on getting rid of fossil fuels. Instead, the liberal media spent 95% of their time on trumped-up

alleged sexual assault charges against Donald Trump. For instance, let's look at 74-year-old Jessica Leeds, who said, "Trump fondled me for 15 minutes. His hands were all over me. When he moved to below the waist I objected." This is a woman that the New York Times felt was credible! Really! As an old school reporter, I wouldn't have just walked away from this one, I would have run. I can assure you with most of the women I know, including myself, that kind of behavior wouldn't have gone past the first 15 seconds. It leaves me wondering how much Leeds was paid by the Clintons! To my way of thinking, instead of all the reporting on allegations, they should be reporting real news. Last week the lead story should have been the USS Mason was fired on again. The U.S. Navy destroyer was in international waters. Although the ship was not struck, this is the third time in the last week. The last attempted attack was on Saturday from off the coast of Yemen. Instead of the trash talk on CNN, NBC, ABC, MSNBC and CBS, there is serious news to report. And the latest attempts to kill Americans were not carried out without the consent of Iran, make no mistake, leaving me again to say the deal with Iran was a flop. Just a footnote, both Obama's and Hillary

Clinton's right hand women were born in Iran. Do some research. Another story totally ignored last week: Vice President Biden threatened Russia when he said, "Expect retaliations for cyber attacks." Nothing like telling the enemy what you're going to do. Oh well, some get it, some don't. At this point I don't think anyone is going to change their mind. But what everyone needs to understand is this time you're voting for the future direction of this country for your children and your grandchildren. I'm with Condoleezza Rice when she tweeted last week one word, "Enough!" Let's get back to real news, not B.S. from the Clinton camp. On to the third and final debate on Wednesday, October 19 in Las Vegas with Moderator Chris Wallace from FOX News. I think the first debate was won by Clinton. The second debate was a draw. But trust I will be in front of the boob tube watching FOX News, the only network, in my opinion, that's not in George Soros' pocket at this time. Until next week. the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an association of state lawmakers from across the nation. The Illinois law, which took effect this year, was introduced in 2015 by State Sen. Kyle McCarter. “A simple Internet search for ‘synthetic drugs’ will turn up countless numbers of news stories from around the nation about how these drugs shatter lives,” said McCarter (R-Lebanon). “Synthetic drugs are a real problem and a serious threat to the lives of teens and young adults, with dangerous side effects. I had the opportunity to present the Illinois legislation (Senate Bill 1129) to ALEC at their recent meeting in Indianapolis. They adopted the law as a model policy for all states.” Synthetic or designer street drugs are commonly known by names such as K-2, Spice, Yucatan Fire, Double X, Scooby Doo and others. They are often purchased at convenience stores as an over-the-counter product. And while the labels often carry a disclaimer ‘Not for Human Consumption,’ such statements will no longer qualify as a ‘way out’ for the makers. Getting rid of the label’s liability loophole is a key component of the new Illinois law and ALEC’s model policy based on the law. “The people who manufacture these harmful substances label them with catchy names and colorful packaging to entice children to tr y them. Unfortunately, there have been countless numbers of teens and young adults who suffered severe reactions,

including suicidal thoughts, confusion, violent behavior, hallucinations and chest pains,” said McCarter. “Illinois families are not alone in dealing with this threat. These drugs have wide distribution across the nation, in both small towns and big cities.” Synthetic drugs are dangerous because they are cheaper to purchase. They mimic the effects of marijuana, cocaine and meth, but with higher potency and significantly more danger to the user. Previous legislative efforts in Illinois to ban them, including socalled ‘synthetic marijuana’ and ‘bath salts,’ proved to have limited effect because those laws targeted specific formulas of the designer drugs. In recent years, illicit drug makers, some who have operated out of homes, simply altered a banned formula and sold a revised version of the drugs. The Illinois ban makes the entire chemical structure illegal, which also bans all future variations of the synthetics known as ‘cannabinoids’ and ‘cathinones.’ A similar measure was first made law in Rhode Island in 2013. “Serving in the super minority in Illinois has its challenges. But this issue has nothing to do with politics. Most legislators – regardless of party – recognize that the drug problem in America is killing the next generation,” McCarter said. “As Senate Bill 1129 made its way through the legislative process in Springfield, it picked up bipartisan sponsorship and passed with unanimous support.”

CORLHS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SEES RECORD INDUCTION, MEMBERSHIP

Submitted Photo

Seventeen students were inducted on Sept. 26 into the Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Pictured (L to R) seated, front row: Corinne DeBoard, Georgia Agan, Samantha Fatheree, Caroline Boehne, Devin Brammeier, Faye Burger, Mandey Hafford, Joyce Harkness and Hannah Klockenga; back row: Wilfred Pennington, chapter adviser; Chelsey Varela, Nicholas Yingst-Jewell, Zachary Myers, Dakota Siebert, Austin Klockenga, Austin Britt, Tristan Britt, Thomas Wolf, Lei Zhang, Abigail Dunavan, Don Duensing, principal and executive director of Christ Our Rock; and Curtis Boehne, guest speaker. Just as the student enrollment of Christ Our Rock hit a record 115 students, so did the school’s National Honor Society chapter membership, following an induction ceremony held Sept. 26. A total of 19 students were inducted, four seniors and 15 juniors, bringing the total chapter membership to 28 members. Both are record numbers for the school’s NHS chapter. New members inducted were seniors Faye Burger, Austin Klockenga, Zachary Myers and Thomas Wolf, as well as juniors Georgia Agan, Caroline Boehne, Devin Brammeier, Austin Britt, Tristan Britt, Corinne DeBoard, Abigail Dunavan, S a m a nt h a Fat h e r e e , Mandey Hafford, Joyce Harkness, Hannah Klockenga, Dakota Siebert, Chelsey Varela, Nicholas Yingst-Jewell and Lei Zhang. the four surrounding counties in Illinois. Marion County students are from Centralia, Walnut Hill, Odin, Shanghai but staying with a host family in Iuka, and Patoka. Jefferson County students are from Boyd, Dix, Waltonville and Mt. Vernon. Washington County students are from Venedy and Okawville. Clinton County students are from Hoffman and Hoyleton. Guest speaker for the ceremony was Curtis Boehne, outpatient clinic manager for the VA Hospital in Marion. Boehne also volunteers on a part time basis as a counselor for Christ Our Rock. He has served the VA Hospital for the last 10 years, having worked previously for

Lutheran Child and Family Services and St. Mary’s Hospital. Boehne also taught earlier in his career in the Lutheran education system. Approximately 150 people were in attendance for the induction ceremony. Don Duensing, executive director of Christ Our Rock, opened the meeting with prayer and delivered the welcoming address. NHS adviser Wilfred Pennington introduced each inductee and presented them with a certificate, membership card and NHS pin. Chapter President Ethan Boester gave a brief update on chapter activities. During the previous school year the chapter volunteered time at the Centralia

Recycling Center and were servers for the Trinity Lutheran Friendship Guild dinner held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia. The chapter also help e d s er ve at t he Centralia First Baptist Church’s annual pancake breakfast, held in October. Other chapter officers include Ruth Belli, vice president; Lexi Cole, secretar y ; and Megan Schwarzlose, treasurer. The four officer participated in the official candle lighting portion of the ceremony. The core values of NHS are scholarship, leadership, character and service. All members must maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA and have performed at least 40 hours of volunteer service prior to induction. In addition to an outstanding academic record, the CORLHS students selected for National Honor Society membership have a ls o d ispl aye d strengths in leadership and responsibility. All are active in their school, community and/or respective church homes. The National Honor Society was created in 1921 by the National Association of Secondar y School Principals. The society was the vision of Edward Rynearson, a Nebraska high school principal. His idea was to create a nationwide organization that would create an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote worthy leadership and encourage the development of character in the nation’s secondary schools.

Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31, 2016. It started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as

the symbol for intolerance of drug use. The National Family Partnership is the sponsor for National Red Ribbon Week Celebration. They help people all over the world come together to keep everyone young, old and in between safe and healthy, and to have a drug-free country. Here are some of the ways we all can celebrate this wonderful event. SCHOOLS * Plan essays and poster contests * Decorate the inside and outside of your buildings * Organize a Red Ribbon Rally

CENTRALIA PROJECT PRIDE SEPTEMBER WINNERS Project Pride is a seasonal neighborhood recognition program sponsored by Keep Centralia Beautiful. The recognition is presented to homes and businesses that have made a notable contribution to their neighborhood through beautification and upkeep of their property. The City of Centralia has been divided into eight sections. One home in each section, along with one local business, will be presented with this honor during the months of May through December. This award is to those contributing to the beautification of their neighborhood. This year’s committee will make their tours around the city to choose the homes and one business each month. The homes chosen will be provided a sign for their yard for that month, a certificate and recognition in the Shoppers Weekly. Thank you in advance for making a dedicated commitment to this program and your neighborhood. More people are taking pride in their yards and neighborhoods by putting time and effort into making their property a true asset to the community.

After their hard work, they can enjoy the fruits of their toil and perhaps be recognized for helping make Centralia beautiful one neighborhood at a time. Centralia Clean and Green recently chose the properties pictured below as winners in the Project Pride program. Please feel free to call MiMi at 618-3224483 with the names and addresses of individuals you feel deserve this award. Thanks for helping Keep Centralia Beautiful. Pictured are the September 2016 winners.

DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: Last weekend we took a trip to the Northeast to leaf-peep. We rented a private house through Airbnb, and it was a really nice place. It even came with a cat! While caring for the owners’ cat wasn’t a problem — they left food and water, and the cat did his business outside — it left me wondering. Would I be so comfortable leaving my pets with strangers for several days at a time? What do you think? — Sara in Boston

DEAR SARA: I’m personally a little bit torn about this topic. While cats can generally do well on their own for a couple of days, I too wonder if I could leave a cat with strangers who are renting a property I own. I expect that if both sides are clear about the arrangement — the rental comes with a cat, and there’s an expectation to make sure food and water are available — then it’s not a problem. But, what if the cat gets ill or injured? Are instructions available to the visitor such as the contact number of an emergency vet? And how much do I really know about the visitors, even those that have good reviews on a room rental website? I’d love to hear from cat owners who rent out

2016 CENTRALIA BPW WOMAN OF THE YEAR The Centralia BPW Woman of the Year was announced Sunday afternoon at the First Christian Church by the Co-Chair of BPW Week activities, Lorraine Bassett. The 2016 Woman of the Year is someone everyone knows and loves, Marion County H o u s i n g Au t h o r i t y Executive Director Allison Austin. Lorraine Bassett announced the winner by saying, "Our recipient was raised with the belief that one must be willing to dedicate oneself to improving the lives of others, and has clearly lived by that

belief. She is described as a champion for the less fortunate in our community and always ready to help anyone in need. I would like to present to you Allison Austin, the BPW Woman of the Year." Allison was chosen to receive this honor for her work with the City of C entralia, Kaskaskia College and the Executive Director of the Marion County Housing Authority as well as her commitment to make Marion County a better place to live for everyone. Congratulations, Allison.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re moving from a relatively stable situation to one that appears to be laced with perplexity. Be patient. You’ll eventually get answers to help clear up the confusion around you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A vexing situation tempts you to rush to set it all straight. But it’s best to let things sort themselves out so that you can get a better picture of the challenge you’re facing. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Financial matters could create some confusion, especially with a torrent of advice pouring in from several sources. Resist acting on emotion and wait for the facts to emerge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That goal you’ve set is still in sight and is still in reach. Stay with the course that you’re on. Making too many shifts in direction now could create another set of problems. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It might be time to confront a trouble-making associate and demand some answers. But be prepared for some surprises that could lead you to make a change in some long-standing plans. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. You’re making great progress in sorting out all that confusion that kept you from making those important decisions. You’re on your way now. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A difficult experience begins to ease. That’s the good news. The not-so-

good news is a possible complication that could prolong the problem awhile longer. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your self-confidence gets a much-needed big boost as you start to unsnarl that knotty financial problem. Expect some help from a surprising source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Congratulations. Any lingering negative aftereffects from that not-so-pleasant workplace situation are all but gone. It’s time now to focus on the positive. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your self-confidence grows stronger as you continue to take more control of your life. Arrange for some well-earned fun and relaxation with someone special. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) As usual, you’ve been concerned more about the needs of others than your own. You need to take time for yourself so that you can replenish all that spent energy. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Stronger planetary influences indicate a growing presence of people eager to help you navigate through the rough seas that might mark your career course. BORN THIS WEEK: You can balance emotion and logic, which gives you the ability to make choices that are more likely than not to prove successful. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
