This has been a season of losses. Muhammad Ali, Gordie Howe, Arnold Palmer ... icons, idols and champions measured on a mythical scale that can never be tipped. But for every great player, there has been an equally masterful playcaller broadcasting their every move. They are the ones who paint the vivid, indelible pictures of their exploits into our minds and weave each significant moment into the fabric of time. They are the men and women who make calling singular moments of a game into their life's calling. When Bobby Thompson hit one out of the Polo Grounds to send the New York Giants to the postseason, it wasn't a mere home run, it was "the shot heard 'round the world" that saw "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" When George Foreman jacked up the champ, the moment was described as "Down Goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!" Would anyone remember Bobby Thompson, a
lifetime .270 hitter, if Russ Hodges hadn't made that call? Would Foreman be the wrecking machine Ali used to shock the world with his "rope-a-dope" if Cosell didn't set the scene? Would you remember who won the 1980 gold medal in hockey had Al Michaels not been there to ask if you believed in miracles? In California, residents and sports fans have a peculiar sadness to deal with, for they have lost not one, but two broadcasting legends on the very same day — Vin Scully and Dick Enberg — yet both are still alive. Enberg not only did wonderful play-by-play for the Padres, he was the happy yet dignified play caller, the one who exclaimed "Oh my!" for every great shot at Wimbledon for decades. For fans in Los Angeles — and really, for all baseball fans — the loss of Scully is particularly painful. Nobody called a game better than Scully, and it's unlikely anyone ever will again. For anyone under the age of 67, his was the only voice they heard broadcasting Dodger games. His genuine warmth and ability to make every game seem special had to be heard to

be believed. Maybe that's why his final sign off was enough to bring tears to adults everywhere: "You know friends, so many people have wished me congratulations on a 67-year career in baseball, and they wished me a wonderful retirement with my family, and now, all I can do is tell you what I wish for you. May God give you ... For every storm, a rainbow, For every tear, a smile, For every care, a promise, And a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, A faithful friend to share, For every sigh, a sweet song, And an answer for each prayer. "You and I have been friends for a long time, but I know in my heart I've always needed you more than you've ever needed me. And I'll miss our time together more than I can say. But you know what? There will be a new day and, eventually, a new year. And when the upcoming winter gives way to spring, rest assured, once again, it will be time for Dodger baseball. "So this is Vin Scully, wishing you a very pleasant good afternoon — wherever you may be." Goodbye Vin, you were the true artful Dodger. The Kaskaskia College Child Care Center recently had a visit from staff from the Illinois Corrections Industries Department which has a little over 1.5 acres of garden where various vegetables are grown. This year they were able to donate 2000 pounds of produce to two local food pantries and recently donated 35 pumpkins to the KC Child Care Center. According to Gregory Smith, “The department receives cardboard, paper and tin cans from the college for their recycling program, so we thought it would be a nice gesture to give the kids at the college daycare a few pumpkins to play with.” The department produces various products

MCKAY NAPA AUTO PARTS TOPS PREVIOUS MAKE-A-WISH FUNDRAISERS Mid and Southwestern Illinois McKay NAPA Auto Parts concluded their 2016 Benefit for Make-A-Wish Illinois on October 6 at their 11t h Annua l To ol & Equipment Show. The event was held at Staunton’s C r y s t a l B a l l ro om i n Staunton, IL. This year’s total of $68,676.99 topped all previous amounts. The funds came together through the diligent efforts of McKay customers, friend and business associates; NAPA reps; McKay outside salespersons; managers and employees of all 20 McKay NAPA store locations; office and warehouse employees; plus McKay corporate owners. That evening as a long time large sponsor of MakeA-Wish, McKay NAPA hosted a ‘Meet & Greet’ with racer Tommy Johnson, the NHRA Funny Car Driver, who also drives the MakeA-Wish race car. He provided autographs for guests. Folks also made donations for Make-A-Wish t-shirts which Mr. Johnson signed. During the evening, custom designed pedal cars and a tractor were graciously

That event raised $7,100 on its own. At 8:30 that night, McKay NAPA raffled the Custom Liberator Club Car DS, with its ‘Jeep’ customized body and paint job, bluetooth stereo, lift kit, light bar, custom wheels and tires, etc. They had been selling $10 tickets for the golf cart since spring. Little Jack, 7, a local ‘Wish’ child, and Thomas, 8 years old, another area ‘Wish’ child, were able to attend that evening with their mothers. When the time came to draw the winner, Jack pulled the ticket, assisted by Tommy Johnson. The ticket of John Bender, Litchfield, was drawn. He had purchased multiple tickets to assist Make-AWish. Mr. Bender happened to be in the crowded building at the time his name was drawn by Jack. Ill children’s wishes cost about $6,000 each, and the

If you could have a visit from anyone, past or present, who would it be? I can imagine the various answers people would give to this question. And while there would be many interesting people I would enjoy visiting with, there is no one I would love to visit with more than Jesus Christ. You may think this to be absurd or impossible, but I would strongly disagree, for, you see, God is not dead – HE IS ALIVE!! We find many accounts in the Old Testament where individuals were given a divine visitation. In the book of Genesis God would come into the Garden of Eden in the cool of the day

and walk and talk with Adam and Eve. The Lord appeared to Moses in the burning bush. Theologians refer to times when the Lord appeared to people in his pre-incarnate form as a theophany. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and to various groups of people for forty days before his ascension back to heaven. Before he ascended, he assured his followers that he would not leave us as orphans, but would send the comforter, or the helper – the Holy Spirit. (John 14:20-26) Jesus appeared to the apostle Paul before his conversion on the Damascus Road. (Acts 9) When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey most of the religious leaders rejected him as their Messiah. Jesus wept over the city and prophesied the temple’s and the city’s destruction. “And they shall lay thee even to the ground . . . and they shall not leave thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44)
Wednesday, October 26, 2016 Let us continue to consider the seven principles in Luke 19 that would position us for a visitation of God PRAISING GOD WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART BRINGS A VISITATION OF GOD. When Jesus came riding into Jerusalem, multitudes of peoples, “began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; saying blessed be the king that comes in the name of the Lord.” (Luke 19:37-40) God inhabits the praise of his people. (Psalm 22:3) When Paul and Silas began to praise God from their prison cell, they experienced a mighty visitation of God. (Acts 16) David reiterates this refrain in Psalm 107, “Oh, that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” PASSIONATE LOVE OF GOD BRINGS A VISITATION OF GOD. Jesus wept over Jerusalem. (Luke 19:41-44) The element of God’s presence is love. (Romans 5:5) P R AY E R O P E N S HEAVEN’S GATES FOR A DELUGE OF GOD’S PRESENCE AND POWER. Jesus went into the temple, drove the money changers out, and declared, “It is written, ‘my house is the house of prayer;’ but you have made it a den of

thieves.” (Luke 19:45-56) Joshua loved to stay behind in the tent of glory even when Moses left, because he so hungered for the presence and glory of God. The early church in crisis had a prayer meeting and the place was shaken with a visitation of God. Paul exhorted believers to, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-17) PERVASIVE HUNGER FOR THE WORD OF GOD BRINGS A VISITATION OF GOD. God speaks through His living Word. “And he taught daily in the temple . . . for all the people were very attentive to hear him.” God confirms the Word preached and taught with signs and wonders. (Mark 16:20) Jeremiah wrote, “Thy words were found and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” (Jeremiah 15:16) Revival broke out among the people of God as Ezra, the priest, stood and read the Word of God all day before the people. (Nehemiah 8) Are you hungry for a visitation of God in your life? Apply these seven principles and position yourself before the Lord for a mighty visitation of God. Sabrena First, you pop the popcorn. Then melt 2 sticks of no salted butter. After that a pinch of vanilla. Then a pinch of salt. After, add about 280 marshmallows, any color you like. The marshmallows just make the popcorn stick together. Also, if you like, you can put caramel in to make it sweet and more sticky. Then cook it all. After that roll it in a ball. You could put a popsicle stick in it and the eat it. Say thank you.

ADD A MODERN TWIST TO A FUN HALLOWEEN TRADITION
Apples are synonymous with autumn. Apples ripen as the cool days of fall begin to ar r ive, and c ome
Halloween, apples are a part of spooky celebrations that can be used for treats and games and as part of sea-
sonal decorating. Apple bobbing is one autumn tradition that involves the use of apples.
Despite the popularity of apple bobbing around Halloween, some historians believe the tradition of bobbing for apples is rooted in love and romance and has little to do with trick-ortreating. According to History.com, apple bobbing began as a courting ritual. While the rules of the game varied, the idea was to attempt to bite into the apple named for the young man the woman desired. This method of courting eventually became less popular, but bobbing for apples was resurrected in the early 20th century when Americans who traced their roots to Ireland and England began pl ay i ng t he g ame at Halloween parties. Apple bobbing has also
been linked to Samhain, the precursor to modern day Halloween. Celts believed apples could be used to determine if marriages would occur during a certain time of year. Young, unmarried people would attempt to bite into an apple floating in water or hanging from a string. The first to bite the apple would be the next to marry. Although apple bobbing still occurs today, many eschew the tradition because of germs. The concept of sticking one’s face into a communal bucket of water isn’t appealing in a society that prioritizes sanitary behavior. Those who grew up bobbing for apples and want to continue the tradition in a more sanitary way can create individualized games. Instead of
one large bucket, purchase smaller buckets and fill them with water. Place a couple of apples in each bucket and let participants race to see who can grab an apple first. Another variation is to tie apples from strings and suspend them from a clothesline or a horizontal beam, as the ancient Celts once did. Participants try to grab the apples using only their mouths. Some might be surprised to learn that bobbing for apples is rooted in ancient customs that may have had something to do with marriage. While few would pair matrimony with bobbing for apples today, this fun tradition can still be enjoyed by Halloween revelers.

PUMPKIN-CARVING POINTERS HALLOWEEN MEMORIES... B e g i n w it h a f re s h pumpkin. Look for a pumpkin with a green stem. If the pumpkin has been sitting around for too long or has been handled too much, the stem can get brittle and/or fall off. A thick, fresh pumpkin is best for carving.
Plan your ideas. Draw a plan for your pumpkin before you make your first cut. Then transfer that design to the pumpkin with pen or a thin marker. Don't cut all the way through. Delay carving until the last minute. Wait until the day before Halloween to
begin carving. Pumpkins are a perishable item, and they'll begin to rot as soon as you begin carving. Cut a hole in the back. Vutting off the top of the pumpkin can affect its structural integrity and cause it to rot faster. Instead, cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin and use an electric light to illuminate it. LEDs are adviseable because they don't generate much heat, which can cook and rot the pumpkin from the inside out.

STORING HALLOWEEN TREATS Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Nuts and oils will not last as long as some other ingredients, so consume candy with nuts first. You can try freezing it, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same. 2. Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions. Dark chocolate can be kept one to two years if wrapped in foil and
stored in a cool, dark, dry place. Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of 8 to 10 months. Beware, putting chocolate in the refrigerator can affect texture. 3. Left in the original, unopened package, candy corn can last a few years. Smarties candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the storage, the better. 4. Keep original packaging for freshness or use glass or plastic containers with airtight lids.
5. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. 6. Use candy in other ways. Repurpose it to use in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

PLAN TO ATTEND PART 2
As I said last week, and will say again this week, I'm with Condoleezza Rice when she tweeted a few weeks ago, ENOUGH! But keep in mind Donald Trump is not the cause of all this craziness. He's the result of the corruption of Washington, D.C., which Hillary Clinton has been part of for 30 years. Looking back at last week, on Wednesday, October 19 the third and final Presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton was held in Las Vegas, NV. The debate was centered around everything from the economy to the fitness needed to be the next President. A lot was riding on this debate for Donald Trump, who came out ahead. If you listened to the liberal networks it was Hillary Clinton; if you listened to Fox News it was a draw. In my opinion, it was close to even, with Donald Trump being a little better. Donald Trump focused more on policy as well as getting a few digs in on issues like abortion, open borders and open trade, issues that many Americans are concerned about. However, in the end, I have to say Chris Wallace of Fox News did a better job in moderating this last and final debate than any other moderator. He was fair and kept control of these two sometimes rogue candidates. Up next is Donald Trump's groundbreaking contract with the American voters as he presented his 100 day action plan in a speech given in Gettysburg, PA on last Saturday afternoon. He started by saying, "I'm not a politician, and have never wanted to be one." He continued on by saying "Change has to come from outside a broken system." Never were truer words spoken, in my opinion.
What followed was his 100 day action plan which started with honesty, accountability and change to Washington, something that we, the American people, haven't seen out of our government in a long time. In brief below are the first six measures to clean up Washington: 1) Propose a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Congress. 2) A hiring freeze on all federal employees (exempting military, public safety and public health). 3) For every new federal regulation, two are eliminated. 4) A five year ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after leaving government service. 5) A lifetime ban on White House and Congressional officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government. 6) A complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections. He followed by saying on the same day he would announce his intentions to renegotiate NAFTA and withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. And he went on to announce even more. But most important of all, he promised the Clean Up Corruption in Washington Act. It enacts new ethics reforms to "drain the swamp" and reduce the corrupting influence of special interest on our politics. I only hope he has the opportunity to enact this complete and detailed plan. At this time Trump is being accused by the Clinton camp of putting our democracy in jeopardy by saying he wouldn't necessarily accept the results of this election. I find this rich coming out of the mouth of Hillary Clinton, someone who has in fact jeopardized our very secu-
rity by her private server and email scandal. I heard last week that 14% of the non-citizens in the U.S. are registered to vote?? That's not counting those registered that are no longer with us, and better yet, they vote! So with all that said, I'm not certain I would accept the results either. A footnote on this subject: Let's not forget Al Gore contesting the results when he ran for President. Needless to say, again, I'm ready to see an end to this crazy election cycle and move forward. For over 20 years I've predicted the outcome of the elections. In all those years I've been wrong a few times. The most recent was Obama's second term. This election I am the first to tell you I believe it is possible Trump supporters could be a sleeping giant in spite of the Clinton machine, the liberal media, and poll numbers. They're questionable, but if correct, Clinton will be it, unfortunately. The House will remain Republican, the Senate is iffy. As far as the state elections, I predict voting will be done out of anger, carrying more Republicans. As far as Marion County, I predict for States Attorney Bill Milner, the Republicans will keep the Marion County Board, Patty Brough will retain the Supervisor of Assessments office, and Nick Parker will be the new Coroner. Only two weeks to go. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor relationships, whether platonic, professional or personal. On another note: Be a mite more thrifty. You might need some extra money very soon. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This is the absolute right time to let those often-hidden talents shine their brightest. You’ll impress some very important people with what you can do.
