Would you remember who won the 1980 gold medal in hockey had Al Michaels not been there to ask if you believed in miracles? In California, residents and sports fans have a peculiar sadness to deal with, for they have lost not one, but two broadcasting legends on the very same day — Vin Scully and Dick Enberg — yet both are still alive. Enberg not only did wonderful play-by-play for the Padres, he was the happy yet dignified play caller, the one who exclaimed "Oh my!" for every great shot at Wimbledon for decades. For fans in Los Angeles — and really, for all baseball fans — the loss of Scully is particularly painful. Nobody called a game better than Scully, and it's unlikely anyone ever will again. For anyone under the age of 67, his was the only voice they heard broadcasting Dodger games. His genuine warmth and ability to make every game seem special had to be heard to be believed. Maybe that's why his final sign off was enough to bring tears to adults every-

where: "You know friends, so many people have wished me congratulations on a 67-year career in baseball, and they wished me a wonderful retirement with my family, and now, all I can do is tell you what I wish for you. May God give you ... For every storm, a rainbow, For every tear, a smile, For every care, a promise, And a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends, A faithful friend to share, For every sigh, a sweet song, And an answer for each prayer. "You and I have been friends for a long time, but I know in my heart I've always needed you more than you've ever needed me. And I'll miss our time together more than I can say. But you know what? There will be a new day and, eventually, a new year. And when the upcoming winter gives way to spring, rest assured, once again, it will be time for Dodger baseball. Heat oil to 375° in large saucepan or deep skillet. Drop batter into oil by scant teaspoonfuls; do not overcrowd. Some Fun Entertainment Ideas

• To create a unique Halloween decoration, select an assortment of dimensional characters and party favors and make a mobile. At the end of the party, give each guest an item from the mobile. • For a creative ghost story, seat children in a circle and give each one 30 seconds to add to a progressive ghost story. After the story, pass a sack of goodies and let each storyteller choose a treat. • Black crepe streamers can be part of your party decorations as well as a game. Before the party, wind several streamers of the same length around the room. (You'll need one for each child.) Start the streamers at different points, but have them all lead to the center of the web. Give each child a streamer. A prize goes to the first one to unravel the web. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Candied Apples

Wash and dry apples. Remove stem from each and insert wooden skewer securely in its place. In small heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and corn syrup in water over medium heat. Raise heat and boil rapidly until syrup reaches 300° on candy thermometer, the hard crack stage. (No thermometer? Drop a little of the mixture into very cold water; when removed, it will crack when tapped sharply.) Remove from heat and stir in enough food coloring to give a bright rosy color. Place saucepan in large pan of hot water. Holding each apple by its skewer, dip into syrup until completely coated; place on greased tray or cookie sheet to harden. 6 candied apples.

CORLHS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTEES Just as the student enrollment of Christ Our Rock hit a record 115 students, so did the school’s National Honor Society chapter membership, following an induction ceremony held Sept. 26. A total of 19 students were inducted, four seniors and 15 juniors, bringing the total chapter membership to 28 members. Both are record numbers for the school’s NHS chapter. New members inducted were seniors Faye Burger, Austin Klockenga, Zachary Myers and Thomas Wolf, as well as juniors Georgia Agan, Caroline Boehne, Devin Brammeier, Austin Britt, Tristan Britt, Corinne DeBoard, Abigail Dunavan, Samantha Fatheree, Mandey Hafford, Joyce Harkness, Hannah Klockenga, Dakota Siebert, Chelsey Varela, Nicholas Yingst-Jewell and Lei Zhang. These students represent the four surrounding counties in Illinois. Marion County students are from Centralia, Walnut Hill, Odin, Shanghai (but staying with a host family in Iuka), and Patoka. Jefferson County students are from Boyd, Dix, Waltonville and Mt. Vernon. Washington County students are from Venedy and Okawville. Clinton County students are from Hoffman and Hoyleton. Guest speaker for the ceremony was Curtis Boehne, outpatient clinic manager for the VA Hospital in Marion.

He has served the VA Hospital for the last 10 years, having worked previously for Lutheran Child and Family Services and St. Mary’s Hospital. Boehne also taught earlier in his career in the Lutheran education system. Approximately 150 people were in attendance for the induction ceremony. Don Duensing, executive director of Christ Our Rock, opened the meeting with prayer and delivered the welcoming address. NHS adviser Wilfred Pennington introduced each inductee and presented them with a certificate, membership card and NHS pin. Chapter President Ethan Boester gave a brief update on chapter activities. During the

previous school year the chapter volunteered time at the Centralia Recycling Center and were servers for t h e Tr i n it y Lut h e r an Friendship Guild dinner held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia. All are active in their school, community and/ or respective church homes. The National Honor Society was created in 1921 by the National Association of S e c on d a r y S c h o o l Principals. The society was the vision of Edward Rynearson, a Nebraska high school principal. His idea was to create a nationwide organization that would create an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote worthy leadership and encourage the development of character in the nation’s secondary schools.

I couldn’t wait for success – so I went ahead without it. –Jonathan Winters

As I said last week, and will say again this week, I'm with Condoleezza Rice when she tweeted a few weeks ago, ENOUGH! But keep in mind Donald Trump is not the cause of all this craziness. He's the result of the corruption of Washington, D.C., which Hillary Clinton has been part of for 30 years. Looking back at last week, on Wednesday, October 19 the third and final Presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton was held in Las Vegas, NV. The debate was centered around everything from the economy to the fitness needed to be the next President. A lot was riding on this debate for Donald Trump, who came out ahead. If you listened to the liberal networks it was Hillary Clinton; if you listened to Fox News it was a draw. In my opinion, it was close to even, with Donald Trump being a little better. Donald Trump focused more on policy as well as getting a few digs in on issues like abortion, open borders and open trade, issues that many Americans are concerned about. However, in the end, I have to say Chris Wallace of Fox News did a better job in moderating this last and final debate than any other moderator. He was fair and kept control of these two sometimes rogue candidates. Up next is Donald Trump's groundbreaking contract with the American voters as he presented his 100 day action plan in a speech given in Gettysburg, PA on last Saturday afternoon. He started by saying, "I'm not a politician, and have never wanted to be one." He continued on by saying

"Change has to come from outside a broken system." Never were truer words spoken, in my opinion. What followed was his 100 day action plan which started with honesty, accountability and change to Washington, something that we, the American people, haven't seen out of our government in a long time. In brief below are the first six measures to clean up Washington: 1) Propose a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Congress. 2) A hiring freeze on all federal employees (exempting military, public safety and public health). 3) For every new federal regulation, two are eliminated. 4) A five year ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after leaving government service. 5) A lifetime ban on White House and Congressional officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government. 6) A complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections. He followed by saying on the same day he would announce his intentions to renegotiate NAFTA and withdraw from the TransPacific Partnership. And he went on to announce even more. But most important of all, he promised the Clean Up Corruption in Washington Act. It enacts new ethics reforms to "drain the swamp" and reduce the corrupting influence of special interest on our politics. I only hope he has the opportunity to enact this complete and detailed plan. At this time Trump is

being accused by the Clinton camp of putting our democracy in jeopardy by saying he wouldn't necessarily accept the results of this election. I find this rich coming out of the mouth of Hillary Clinton, someone who has in fact jeopardized our very security by her private server and email scandal. I heard last week that 14% of the non-citizens in the U.S. are registered to vote?? That's not counting those registered that are no longer with us, and better yet, they vote! So with all that said, I'm not certain I would accept the results either. A footnote on this subject: Let's not forget Al Gore contesting the results when he ran for President. Needless to say, again, I'm ready to see an end to this crazy election cycle and move forward. For over 20 years I've predicted the outcome of the elections. In all those years I've been wrong a few times. The most recent was Obama's second term. This election I am the first to tell you I believe it is possible Trump supporters could be a sleeping giant in spite of the Clinton machine, the liberal media, and poll numbers. They're questionable, but if correct, Clinton will be it, unfortunately. The Hous e will remain Republican, the Senate is iffy. Only two weeks to go. Until next week. The College Financial Aid Process The College Financial Aid Process will held on October 26 at 6:30 p.m. ISA Corps members are experts at simplifying the world of financial aid. • "To keep sneakers from smelling up a closet, tuck a sheet of fabricsoftener into each one. Keep it in overnight, or just leave it there until you wear your shoes again." — D.F. in Texas • Now is the time to prep your outside pipes if you live in a cold-weather area. Cover exposed spigots with a foam wrapper, and be sure to drain any in-ground irrigation systems if you expect a freeze in your area. • If your brown sugar is too hard, just pop it in a bowl and into the microwave with a slice of bread. The bread will help soften it, and it will be ready to use in seconds!

We Love Our Veterans!

A Visitation of God (Part II) If you could have a visit from anyone, past or present, who would it be? I can imagine the various answers people would give to this question. And while there would be many interesting people I would enjoy visiting with, there is no one I would love to visit with more than Jesus Christ. You may think this to be absurd or impossible, but I would strongly disagree, for, you see, God is not dead – HE IS ALIVE!! We find many accounts in the Old Testament where individuals were given a divine visitation. In the book of Genesis God would come into the Garden of Eden in the cool of the day and walk and talk with Adam and Eve. The Lord appeared to Moses in the burning bush. Theologians refer to times when the Lord appeared to people in his pre-incarnate form as a theophany. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples and to various groups of people for forty days before his ascension back to heaven. Before he ascended, he assured his followers that he would not leave

us as orphans, but would send the comforter, or the helper – the Holy Spirit. (John 14:20-26) Jesus appeared to the apostle Paul before his conversion on the Damascus Road. (Acts 9) When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey most of the religious leaders rejected him as their Messiah. Jesus wept over the city and prophesied the temple’s and the city’s destruction. “And they shall lay thee even to the ground . . . and they shall not leave thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” (Luke 19:41-44) Let us continue to consider the seven principles in Luke 19 that would position us for a visitation of God PRAISING GOD WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART BRINGS A VISITATION OF GOD. When Jesus came riding into Jerusalem, multitudes of peoples, “began to rejoice and praise

God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; saying blessed be the king that comes in the name of the Lord.” (Luke 19:37-40) God inhabits the praise of his people. (Psalm 22:3) When Paul and Silas began to praise God from their prison cell, they experienced a mighty visitation of God. (Acts 16) David reiterates this refrain in Psalm 107, “Oh, that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” PASSIONATE LOVE OF GOD BRINGS A VISITATION OF GOD. Jesus wept over Jerusalem. (Luke 19:41-44) The element of God’s p re s e n c e i s l ov e . (Romans 5:5) PRAYER OPENS HEAVEN’S GATES FOR A DELUGE OF GOD’S PRESENCE AND POWER. Jesus went into the temple, drove the money changers out, and declared, “It is written, ‘my house is the house of prayer;’ but you have made it a den of thieves.” (Luke 19:4556) Joshua loved to stay behind in the tent of glory even when Moses left, because he so hungered for the presence and glory of God. The

early church in crisis had a prayer meeting and the place was shaken with a visitation of God. Paul exhorted believers to, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-17) P E RVA S I V E HUNGER FOR THE WO R D O F G O D BRINGS A VISITATION OF GOD. God speaks through His living Word. “And he taught daily in the temple . . . for all the people were very attentive to hear him.” God confirms the Word preached and taught with signs and wonders. (Mark 16:20) Jeremiah wrote, “Thy words were found and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” (Jeremiah 15:16) Revival broke out among the people of God as Ezra, the priest, stood and read the Word of God all day before the people. (Nehemiah 8) Are you hungry for a visitation of God in your life? Apply these seven principles and position yourself before the Lord for a mighty visitation of God. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Mars, your ruling planet, begins a journey that will open up a growing number of possibilities. Put that surging Arian energy to good use and explore it to your heart’s content. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is the time to prepare for a career move coming up next month. Update your resume. Get those proposals in shape. And don’t forget to buff up that Bovine self-confidence. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your Gemini instincts will guide you to the right people who might be able to help you get over that career impasse that has been holding you back. Expect to make changes. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re getting closer, but you still have a ways to go before reaching your goals. Continue to stay focused, no matter how difficult it can be for the easily distracted Moon Child. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might be keeping you from getting to the source of a disturbing situation. Don’t be shy about asking questions. Remember: Information is power. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to shake up your tidy little world by doing something spontaneous, like taking an unplanned trip or going on a mad shopping spree. You might be probing just a little too deeply into a situation that you find singularly suspicious. The facts you seek will begin to emerge at a later time. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor relationships, whether platonic, professional or personal. On another note: Be a mite more thrifty. You might need some extra money very soon. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This is the absolute right time to let those often-hidden talents shine their brightest. You’ll impress some very important people with what you can do.
