Why Kaskaskia College?

Cooking With Lizzie

Favorite Apple Recipes KC students are saving thousands of dollars while reaching their highest education goal. Thousands of KC graduates are finding the jobs they want! KC graduates are earning thousands of dollars more a year than those who decided not to come to KC. So the real question is...Why not Kaskaskia College?

Call today to register for the Spring semester! Spend Less, Learn More, Go Farther...

One of my family's favorite fall — as well as year around — fruits is apples. There are so many wonderful recipes that you can't run out of ways to cook, bake, broil or use them freshly cut. Plus there's something to be said for the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor at bay." The most common apples you find locally are: • Jonathan — Excellent for eating and most cooking purposes. • Red Delicious — Excellent for eating; fair for cooking. • Golden Delicious — Excellent for eating and all cooking purposes. • Winesap — Excellent for eating and all cooking purposes. To find the apples of your choice, check out one of my favorite spots, Schwartz Fruit Farms in Walnut Hill or Hawkins Schwartz in Dix, and while you're there, tell Tom Lizzie said hello. Some of my favorite apple dishes are below.

FUNDING OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

FASFA COMPLETION NIGHT

The state makes operating assistance payments to downstate public transportation systems on a quarterly basis through the Downstate Public Transportation Fund, which is funded through transfers from the General Revenue Fund. Per state statute (30 ILCS 740), Illinois provides 65% reimbursement of operating expenses for South Central Transit and other downstate Illinois public transportation systems. Per state statute, Illinois is legally bound to provide this funding as a continuing appropriation whether the legislature appropriates sufficient funds or not. As of October 5, 2016, the Downstate Public Transportation Fund had a balance of $47,000, therefore, the state has not made a General Revenue Fund transfer to the Downstate Public Transportation Fund since June 2016 and the Comptroller’s office is not sure if a transfer will be made before December. South Central Transit and other downstate public transportation systems have not received any state operating assistance payments in FY2017, which started July 1, 2016. South Central Transit is owed about 2.5 million dollars in state operating and capitol payments, which constitutes a third of its annual operating budget. In the absence of any state payments, South Central Transit is borrowing money from a line of credit, which will sustain most all operations until the 1st of December. SCT management is cutting cost in every conceivable area

A FASFA completion night will be held at C.E. Brehm Memorial Library, 101 S. 7th St., Mt. Vernon, on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ISA Corps members will be available to help students and parents complete the FAFSA (Free Application

to avoid cutting as many services as possible to people who desperately rely on SCT services each and e ver y day. Ef fe c t ive November 1st, SCT will be making changes to the Pirates shuttles to reduce expense. Please refer to our website at www.southcentraltransit.org for detailed changes. If the state does not make any operating assistance payments before the 1st of December, South Central Transit will be forced to start suspending other routes and services. There are other downstate systems that have already begun to suspend services or have already shut down. South Central Transit provides an average of 2,000 rides per day to citizens who use the bus to get to work, school, healthcare, and shopping. A suspension of service will deny many citizens their independence and prevent them from keeping jobs, obtaining education, staying healthy, and even being able to buy groceries and other basic necessities. It is imperative that the State of Illinois follow the law and make FY2017 op-

erating assistance payments to downstate public transportation systems. State legislators, the Governor, and the Comptroller must be contacted. They must be urged to immediately transfer funds to the Downstate Public Transportation Fund and ensure that downstate public transportation systems receive their legally-required operating assistance payments before even more transit services are suspended. SCT is asking that you contact everyone from the Governor to your local Representatives in support of public transportation. Phone numbers are listed below. Governor Bruce Rauner, 312-814-2121. Tyler Diers of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, visited Highland to present the Champion of Free Enterprise Award to Rep. Charlie Meier at Windows on Broadway with Highland Chamber Members and business leaders in attendance. The award acknowledges state legislators who recognize the importance of free enterprise and who agree with pro-business legislative policies to further economic opportunities for Illinois businesses and their employees. “With Illinois’ lackluster economic performance, there has never been a more crucial moment for our state to embrace pro-business legislators who represent the business community and support the fundamental principles of the free market system, said Todd Maisch, president and CEO, Illinois Chamber of Commerce.

“The Champions of Free Enterprise are exactly the types of lawmakers who will encourage investment in Illinois and help it become more competitive with other states. We appreciate Rep. Meier’s dedication to the good of all of Illinois. Marich added. The Illinois Chamber’s Champion of Free Enter pr is e Award is awarded biennially to recognize Illinois Senators and Representatives who have committed to support and defend the employers of Illinois and support the policies of a free enterprise system to help Illinois’ economy grow and prosper. In order to be eligible for the award, a lawmaker must have received an average of 85 percent or better voting record over the previous two General Assembly sessions as rated in the Illinois Chamber of Commerce Legislative Rating pub-

lished at the end of each session. The ratings are based on legislators’ votes on the key business legislation of the 99th General Assembly. The votes in the Senate and House are selected based on their impact on the business community. In cases where more than one roll call was taken on a bill, the vote that best demonstrates support for employers’ vital

interests was chosen. “This is an honor to be awarded and I’m very proud to be a recipient this year. I’m glad to see my voting records shows that I’m working for the many local businesses we have her in the 108th District. – Rep. Charlie Meier. Also awarded were Senator Kyle McCarter and Rep. John Cavalettto.

You're Doing It All Wrong Baseball is a maddening game; ask any Mets or Orioles fan, and they'll surely agree. The new "sudden death" onegame wild card isn't a playoff — it's a play-in game. The fans hang with their team for 162 games and at the end of it all, turns out they only got to play one more game than the last-place team. But baseball has always been a bit weird. It's the only sport I can think of that doesn't have the same playing field dimensions. It's the only sport that I can think of where the defense controls the ball, and the offense's job is to protect the plate (yes, maybe c r i cke t is anot he r example). And it is easily the most stubborn when it comes to the "unwritten" rules. For instance, it's the bottom of the ninth and you're down a run. Your leadoff hitter gets a base on balls. What happens next? If you're like most managers, you would attempt to bunt him over

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

into scoring position, right? Well, Brian Kenney, anchorman for the MLB Network, is here to tell you that you're wrong. Kenney is one of those guys, you know, the fancy-schmancy-SABRmetric-money-ball-BillJames-disciple type that never played the game but is a big know-it-all because he uses outlandish things like irrefutable statistics to back up his arguments. In Kenney's new book, "Ahead of the Cu r v e " ( S i m o n & Shuster), he points out that the run expectancy with a man on first is 0.94. With a man on second, one out the number craters to 0.72. You're giving the other team a free out, and you're taking the bat out of two players' hands ... the guy bunting and the guy who is on-deck after the other two fail to drive in that run. Yet the manager is lauded

whether it works or not because it puts the blame on the two hitters who "failed in the clutch" because "he played the percentages," which is true, except that he played the wrong ones. Kenney also goes on to disparage the won-lost statistic for pitchers and the error for infielders. The W-L has definitely been devalued over the years. Pitchers don't pitch complete games anymore, so it's a nonsense statistic. ERA and WHIP (walks and hits divided by innings pitched) are far better measures. He also points put that fielding percentage is a nonsense statistic because it doesn't take into account a fielder's range or his arm. His most outlandish theory is "bullpenning." He cites statistics that prove most runs are scored in the first inning and/or about the time a starting pitcher starts to fatigue. Why not have a few designated starters who pitch two innings, a few long-reliever/starter types and a bunch of firemen ... pitchers like Sparky Lyle, Goose Gossage and Rollie Fingers, guys you bring in whenever you're in a jam. Why save the best (today's closer) for last

when the team could have used him best in, say, the fifth-inning when the other team had the bases jammed. I actually put that theory to the test using the "MLB Manager" app — which I highly recommend — and son-of-gun if it didn't take the 1985 Cubs to the World Series with no ERA over 2.99. Will a change come? Sadly, not in our lifetime, but think of the children ... don't they deserve to see their team win a Series one day? Last Friday came the October surprise. FBI Director James Comey, dropped yet another email bombshell! Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), said on several news shows that FBI Director James Comey's letter to Congress nine days before the election was a "substantial development." But one step at a time. Looking back, even though Attorney General Loretta Lynch objected to Comey sending a letter pertaining to this latest email development, Comey overstepped his boss and did it anyway. This leads me to believe this latest email development is quite serious, even though Attorney General Lynch and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates tried to silence Comey. This new email probe has been centered around a computer seized by the FBI in the Anthony Weiner probe on a separate investigation over Wiener sexting underage children. Former Congressman Weiner just so happens to be the estranged husband of who else but Huma Abedin, Mrs. Clinton's closest aide. Oh the webs the Clintons weave. What the FBI found on this private computer that was shared by Ms. Abedin and Mr. Weiner was reportedly at first over 10,000 State Department emails. It just so happens Ms. Abedin used her personal Yahoo account because it was "easier to print out." Whoops, are these particular 10,000 emails they found accidentally part of the ones that Mrs. Clinton

thought she deleted? I suspect so. By the way, remember Yahoo was hacked into not too long ago. Years ago I thought, "Where there's smoke there's fire." And with the Clintons there's been plenty of smoke and a number of fires. Looking back, I'm sure Mrs. Clinton believed the interest in her email server ended in July, especially after her husband, former President Bill Clinton, met on a private jet with Attorney General Loretta Lynch (FBI Director James Comey's boss) who was in charge of his wife's email investigation by the FBI. That in itself was illegal and unethical. But not to worry, they went thousands of miles out of their way to meet to discuss golf and grandchildren. Not to mention Loretta Lynch doesn't play golf, and the last time I checked, she had no grandchildren! Corruption at its finest! But what I find especially interesting is with Ms. Abedin at her side in Des Moines, IA on Friday preparing to make a statement when pressed by a reporter there about the latest emails being found during the investigation into Mr. Wiener's sexting, Mrs. Clinton dismissed the reports as "rumors." When busted, the typical Clintonian response is deny, deny, deny. Today Mrs. Clinton is complaining that this latest information should not have come out just prior to this election. My only answer goes right back to Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State, "It's your fault." But remember, there seem to be different laws for the Clintons than the rest of us, and

no one is above the law except the Clintons. So the big question now is how will this affect the outcome of the election. In my opinion, unfortunately, very little. Although even though I don't put much stock in the polls, many of them are showing a close race. Florida, a must win state, is showing pre-bombshell: Clinton 45%, Trump 44%. In closing, last week I heard of a young man that took four pictures on his personal camera on a U.S. nuclear submarine. For taking those pictures, he is now serving one year in a federal prison! What do you think should happen to Huma Abedin for using her private Yahoo account to send emails pertaining to the Deputy Secretary of State or to Hillary Clinton for not overseeing her staff ? This is total and complete irresponsibility. In last minute news just before press time Monday, Anthony Weiner is cooperating with the FBI and handed the laptop in question over to the FBI so they didn't need a subpoena. Trust, they know what's in those emails, and there are now as many as 650,000 emails being looked at on this private computer. This is bigger than Watergate! If you're voting for her, WHY? Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. levated body temperature, also known as fever, makes many people run to the medicine cabinet. This is especially true when fever strikes a young child and parents’ concerns grow. But fevers are quite common and not nearly as harmful as many people may think. Although illnesses may bring about fevers that can be life-threatening, including malaria and dengue, more run-of-themill fevers are typically triggered by common bacterial or viral infections or even inflammatory conditions like rheu-

matoid arthritis, offers The Mayo Clinic. Sometimes the cause of a fever can’t be identified, but that is not necessarily cause for alarm. Fevers are a natural immune response. The purpose of a fever is to gain an advantage over an infectious agent by making the body less favorable for the spread of this agent, whether it’s a virus or bacterium. Many infectious agents are temperature-sensitive and require the right mix of conditions to be able to become profligate consumers of the body’s resources. The hypothalmus is the body’s internal thermostat and will be triggered by biochemical substances in the blood alerting the body to the presence of a potential invader. The body then will retain and generate more heat to essentially kill off that invader. According to t he Inter na l Me dicine Residency Program at Ind i ana Un ive rs it y, because children have immatu re and nov i c e immune systems, they

tend to get higher fevers more quickly than adults. As children age and their bodies learn and adapt, fevers typically are not nearly as severe. This may be a reason why a child’s high fever is less of a concern than the same fever in an adult. Normal body temperature fluctuates during the day, but a temperature from about 97 F (36.1 C) to 99 F (37.2 C) generally is considered “normal.” Adults should only be concerned if a fever is high-grade, reaching 104 F or more. Such fevers are considered dangerous. Chronic fevers, or those persisting for longer than three to four days, also should be checked out by a physician. Watching how a person behaves may indicate whether he or she is ill enough to necessitate a

doctor visit. Infants should always be checked by a doctor if they have a fever because it could be a sign of a serious infection. Low-grade fevers generally do not require any medicine, and taking a fever-reducer may prolong the underlying illness or mask the cause of it. Give the body a chance to fight the foreign invader before reaching for acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Physicians may advise avoiding fever-lowering drugs for temperatures of 102 F (38.9 C) or lower. Always call a doctor if you need clarification on medication dosage and other fever recommendations. Fevers can be scary, but they are just one of many ways the human body defends itself against illness.

ADVANTAGES TO PHYSICAL THERAPY TO RELIEVE PAIN

C

hronic pain affects people all around the world, greatly impacting sufferers’ quality of life. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, recent reports have indicated more than 1.5 billion people worldwide experience chronic pain. Common complaints include lower back pain, headache, neck pain, or neurogenic pain, which is pain resulting from damage to peripheral nerves. Pain can impac t people in many ways, as some people can tolerate discomfort better than others. Chronic pain may result in missed time at work, depression, anger, and an inability to live a full life. According to a recent Institute of Medicine Report: Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research, pain is a significant public health problem that costs society at least $560 to $635 billion annually. To cope with pain, many people rely on over-the-counter and prescription medications. This reliance on drugs has helped to fuel pain medication addictions that can lead to other drug abuse. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says research now suggests that abuse of opioid pain medications may actually open the door to

heroin use. Some individuals report switching to heroin because it is cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription opioids. A safer and sometimes more effective method of pain relief than opioids, physical therapy can help a person get back on track and feel much better in the process. The American Physical Therapy Association says while surgery and prescription drugs can be the best course of treatment for certain diagnoses, there is increasing evidence that conservative treatments like physical therapy can be equally effective and cheaper treatment plans for many conditions. Physical therapy can be as effective as surgery for meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears and spinal stenosis, among other conditions. When a patient is prescribed physical therapy, a therapist will develop a treatment plan that addresses the specific needs of the patient. This is essentially a collaboration between patient and physica l t herapist. Therapists are experts in improving mobility and motion and have studied extensively to that end. Because weakness or stiffness may be contributing to pain, therapists try to address the source of the pain and relieve the pain itself.

WINDOWS AND SIDING

A couple of years ago, I attended my 45th high school reunion. At first I thought I was in the wrong place as the room was full of old people. The only way I recognized any of them was when I put my reading glasses on and read their name tag. We were given a survey and asked to write down the first car we owned. I wrote, a blue 1955 Ford with a bumper sticker that said, "Time is short but eternity is sure." The back page of the class reunion program was in memory of 13 of our classmates who have died. My cousin Janet was one of them. She died while still in high school of kidney disease. I still remember the story of her description of an angel who came to escort her to heaven to be with Jesus. Yes, time is short but eternity is sure. When Jesus began telling his disciples of his imminent death and return to heaven, their hearts were troubled. He then gave them these wonderful assurances of heaven found John 14. PEACE IS FOR THOSE

WHO WILL BELIEVE. "Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me." (John 14:1) Faith in Christ overcomes the fear of the unknown. The greatest fear of man is the fear of death. Believe in Jesus and his peace will flood your soul. We have this assurance in John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life." A PLACE CALLED HEAVEN IS FOR THOSE WHO WILL BELIEVE. "In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2) Throughout scripture we get glimpses of the glories of heaven. (Revelation 21 - 22) In heaven there is no night for the Lamb of God,

Wednesday, November 2, 2016 Jesus, is the light. There is no sorrow or tears, no more death, sickness, or Satan. God has a special place for all who believe. The movie "Heaven is Real" portrays the true story of a boy who died but came back to life. He described some of the glories of heaven. He saw his grandfather and was greeted by a sister who had died at birth, of which he knew nothing of. Because of the little boy's description of heaven and its people, his father became a believer. THE PROMISE OF HIS COMING IS FOR ALL WHO BELIEVE. Jesus said, "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself that where I am, you will be also." (John 14:3) What a wonderful promise! This is called the blessed hope. When Jesus comes again with the saints from heaven, believers who have died will be resurrected and those who are alive at Christ's coming will be caught up with them to meet Jesus in the air. "So shall we ever be with the Lord." (I Thessalonians 4:14-18) Eter-

nity is a long, long time. T H E PAT H T O ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN IS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN JESUS. Thomas was confused about the way to heaven. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) Receiving Christ by faith makes one a child of God and a joint heir of Christ. (John 1:12; Romans 8:17) THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST IS THE REWARD OF THOSE WHO BELIEVE. "Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me." (John 14:7-11) Jesus is God. Heaven is all about Jesus. Believers who overcome will be given the Morning Star, Jesus, as their reward. (Revelation 2:28) Heaven is so real! Jesus says, "You believe in God, believe also in me." (John 14:1) We all grow old and face our own mortality. Heaven is for real and is the wonderful hope of all who believe in Christ! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

WE’VE GOT GREAT BUYS ALL OVER OUR HUGE STORE!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The pitter-patter of all those Sheep feet means that you’re out and about, rushing to get more done. That’s fine, but slow down by the weekend so you can heed some important advice. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re in charge of your own destiny these days, and, no doubt, you’ll have that Bull’s-eye of yours right on target. But don’t forget to make time for family events. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared for a power struggle that you don’t want. Look to the helpful folks around you for advice on how to avoid it without losing the important gains you’ve made. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Congratulations! You’re about to claim your hard-earned reward for your patience and persistence. Now, go out and enjoy some fun and games with friends and family. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might find it difficult to shake off that listless feeling. But be patient. By week’s end, your spirits will perk up and you’ll be your perfectly purring self again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A problem with a co-worker could prove to be a blessing in disguise when a superior steps in to investigate and discovers a situation that could prove helpful to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a favorable time to move ahead with your plans. Some setbacks are

expected, but they’re only temporary. Pick up the pace again and stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your creativity is recognized and rewarded. So go ahead and claim what you’ve earned. Meanwhile, that irksome and mysterious situation soon will be resolved. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new associate brings ideas that the wise Sagittarian quickly will realize can benefit both of you. Meanwhile, someone from the workplace makes an emotional request. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It might be a good idea to ease up on that hectic pace and spend more time studying things you’ll need to know when more opportunities come later in November. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A relatively quiet time is now giving way to a period of high activity. Face it with the anticipation that it will bring you some well-deserved boons and benefits. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Go with the flow, or make waves? It’s up to you. Either way, you’ll get noticed. However, make up your own mind. Don’t let anyone tell you what choices to make. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to examine everything before you agree to accept what you’re told. Your need for truth keeps all those around you honest. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
