Last Friday came the October surprise. FBI Director James Comey, dropped yet another email bombshell! Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), said on several news shows that FBI Director James Comey's letter to Congress nine days before the election was a "substantial development." But one step at a time. Looking back, even though Attorney General Loretta Lynch objected to Comey sending a letter pertaining to this latest email development, Comey overstepped his boss and did it anyway. This leads me to believe this latest email development is quite serious, even though Attorney General Lynch and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates tried to silence Comey. This new email probe has been centered around a computer seized by the FBI in the Anthony Weiner probe on a separate investigation over Wiener sexting underage children. Former Congressman Weiner just so happens to be the estranged husband of who else but Huma Abedin, Mrs. Clinton's closest aide. Oh the webs the Clintons weave. What the FBI found on this private computer that was shared by Ms. Abedin and Mr. Weiner was reportedly at first over 10,000 State Department emails. It just so happens Ms. Abedin used her personal Yahoo account because it was "easier to print out." Whoops, are these particular 10,000 emails they found accidentally part of the ones that Mrs. Clinton

thought she deleted? I suspect so. By the way, remember Yahoo was hacked into not too long ago. Years ago I thought, "Where there's smoke there's fire." And with the Clintons there's been plenty of smoke and a number of fires. Looking back, I'm sure Mrs. Clinton believed the interest in her email server ended in July, especially after her husband, former President Bill Clinton, met on a private jet with Attorney General Loretta Lynch (FBI Director James Comey's boss) who was in charge of his wife's email investigation by the FBI. That in itself was illegal and unethical. But not to worry, they went thousands of miles out of their way to meet to discuss golf and grandchildren. Not to mention Loretta Lynch doesn't play golf, and the last time I checked, she had no grandchildren! Corruption at its finest! But what I find especially interesting is with Ms. Abedin at her side in Des Moines, IA on Friday preparing to make a statement when pressed by a reporter there about the latest emails being found during the investigation into Mr. Wiener's sexting, Mrs. Clinton dismissed the reports as "rumors." When busted, the typical Clintonian response is deny, deny, deny. Today Mrs. Clinton is complaining that this latest information should not have come out just prior to this election. My only answer goes right back to Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State, "It's your fault." But remember, there seem to be different laws for the Clintons than the rest of us, and

no one is above the law except the Clintons. So the big question now is how will this affect the outcome of the election. In my opinion, unfortunately, very little. Although even though I don't put much stock in the polls, many of them are showing a close race. Florida, a must win state, is showing pre-bombshell: Clinton 45%, Trump 44%. In closing, last week I heard of a young man that took four pictures on his personal camera on a U.S. nuclear submarine. For taking those pictures, he is now serving one year in a federal prison! What do you think should happen to Huma Abedin for using her private Yahoo account to send emails pertaining to the Deputy Secretary of State or to Hillary Clinton for not overseeing her staff ? This is total and complete irresponsibility. In last minute news just before press time Monday, Anthony Weiner is cooperating with the FBI and handed the laptop in question over to the FBI so they didn't need a subpoena. Trust, they know what's in those emails, and there are now as many as 650,000 emails being looked at on this private computer. This is bigger than Watergate! If you're voting for her, WHY? Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. FUNDING OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The state makes operating assistance payments to downstate public transportation systems on a quarterly basis through the Downstate Public Transportation Fund, which is funded through transfers from the General Revenue Fund. Per state statute (30 ILCS 740), Illinois provides 65% reimbursement of operating expenses for South Central Transit and other downstate Illinois public transportation systems. Per state statute, Illinois is legally bound to provide this funding as a continuing appropriation whether the legislature appropriates sufficient funds or not. As of October 5, 2016, the Downstate Public Transportation Fund had a balance of $47,000, there-

fore, the state has not made a General Revenue Fund transfer to the Downstate Public Transportation Fund since June 2016 and the Comptroller’s office is not sure if a transfer will be made before December. South Central Transit and other downstate public transportation systems have not received any state operating assistance payments in FY2017, which started July 1, 2016. South Central Transit is owed about 2.5 million dollars in state operating and capitol payments, which constitutes a third of its annual operating budget. In the absence of any state payments, South Central Transit is borrowing money from a line of credit, which will sustain most all operations until

the 1st of December. SCT management is cutting cost in every conceivable area to avoid cutting as many services as possible to people who desperately rely on SCT services each and e ver y day. Ef fe c t ive November 1st, SCT will be making changes to the Pirates shuttles to reduce expense. Please refer to our website at www.southcentraltransit.org for detailed changes. If the state does not make any operating assistance payments before the 1st of December, South Central Transit will be forced to start suspending other routes and services. There are other downstate systems that have already begun to suspend services or have already shut down. South Central Transit

provides an average of 2,000 rides per day to citizens who use the bus to get to work, school, healthcare, and shopping. A suspension of service will deny many citizens their independence and prevent them from keeping jobs, obtaining education, staying healthy, and even being able to buy groceries and other basic necessities. It is imperative that the State of Illinois follow the law and make FY2017 operating assistance payments to downstate public transportation systems. State legislators, the Governor, and the Comptroller must be contacted. They must be urged to immediately transfer funds to the Downstate Public Transportation Fund and ensure that downstate public transportation systems receive their legally-required operating assistance payments before even more transit services are suspended. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Heaven Is For Real A couple of years ago, I attended my 45th high school reunion. At first I thought I was in the wrong place as the room was full of old people. The only way I recognized any of them was when I put my reading glasses on and read their name tag. We were given a survey and asked to write down the first car we owned. I wrote, a blue 1955 Ford with a bumper sticker that said, "Time is short but eternity is sure." The back page of the class reunion program was in memory of 13 of our classmates who have died. My cousin Janet was one of them. She died while still in high school of kidney disease. I still remember the story of her description of an angel who came to escort her to heaven to be with Jesus. Yes, time is short but eternity is sure. When Jesus began telling

his disciples of his imminent death and return to heaven, their hearts were troubled. He then gave them these wonderful assurances of heaven found John 14. PEACE IS FOR THOSE WHO WILL BELIEVE. "Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me." (John 14:1) Faith in Christ overcomes the fear of the unknown. The greatest fear of man is the fear of death. Believe in Jesus and his peace will flood your soul. We have this assurance in John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life." A PLACE CALLED HEAVEN IS FOR THOSE WHO WILL BELIEVE. "In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2) Throughout

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area scripture we get glimpses of the glories of heaven. (Revelation 21 - 22) In heaven there is no night for the Lamb of God, Jesus, is the light. There is no sorrow or tears, no more death, sickness, or Satan. God has a special place for all who believe. The movie "Heaven is Real" portrays the true story of a boy who died but came back to life. He described some of the glories of heaven. He saw his grandfather and was greeted by a sister who had died at birth, of which he knew nothing of. Because of the little boy's description of heaven and its people, his father became a believer. THE PROMISE OF HIS COMING IS FOR ALL WHO BELIEVE. Jesus said, "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself that where I am, you will be also." (John 14:3) What a wonderful promise! This is called the blessed hope. When Jesus comes again with the saints from heaven, believers who have died will be resurrected and those who are alive at Christ's coming will be caught up with them to meet Jesus in the air. "So shall we ever be with the

Lord." (I Thessalonians 4:14-18) Eternity is a long, long time. T H E PA T H T O E T E R NA L L I F E I N HEAVEN IS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN JESUS. Thomas was confused about the way to heaven. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) Receiving Christ by faith makes one a child of God and a joint heir of Christ. (John 1:12; Romans 8:17) THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST IS THE REWARD OF THOSE WHO BELIEVE. "Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me." (John 14:7-11) Jesus is God. Heaven is all about Jesus. Believers who overcome will be given the Morning Star, Jesus, as their reward. (Revelation 2:28) Heaven is so real! Jesus says, "You believe in God, believe also in me." (John 14:1) We all grow old and face our own mortality. Heaven is for real and is the wonderful hope of all who believe in Christ! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cooking With Lizzie

Favorite Apple Recipes One of my family's favorite fall — as well as year around — fruits is apples. There are so many wonderful recipes that you can't run out of ways to cook, bake, broil or use them freshly cut. Plus there's something to be said for the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor at bay." The most common apples you find locally are: • Jonathan — Excellent for eating and most cooking purposes. • Red Delicious — Excellent for eating; fair for cooking. • Golden Delicious — Excellent for eating and all cooking purposes. • Winesap — Excellent for eating and all cooking purposes. To find the apples of your choice, check out one of my favorite spots, Schwartz Fruit Farms in Walnut Hill or Hawkins Schwartz in Dix, and while you're there, tell Tom Lizzie said hello. Some of my favorite apple dishes are below.

Core and pare upper 1/4 of 6 Jonathan apples. Put sugar and cinnamon to taste in center of each apple. Place in greased baking dish with 1/2 c. water. Bake at 350° until tender. More on apples next week.

HOW TO MAKE POPCORN BALLS

AVOID HOLIDAY-RELATED WEIGHT GAIN The holiday season is a busy time of year dominated by social engagements. Many people find the hectic pace of the holiday season makes it challenging to eat healthy, especially since so many holiday parties include desserts and high-calorie foods. Various studies suggest holiday weight gain is common, though holiday revelers may not be gaining as much weight as they think they are. The New England Journal of Medicine found that while people’s perceived holiday weight gain hovers between zero and 6.7 pounds, in reality most people gain just under 1 pound during the holiday season. Though that may not seem like a lot, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health, many people never lose the weight they gain during the winter holidays. The pounds add up year after year, making holiday weight gain a significant contributor to adult obesity. The holiday season does not need to derail a healthy lifestyle. Consider these tips to avoid extra pounds come the holiday season. • Eat before you go shopping. Leaving the house hungry may tempt you to make impulse food purchases that can compromise healthy

diets. It’s easy to grab a quick convenience item at the food court or from a vending machine. However, eating a snack before you leave will alleviate hunger and you can control the foods that go into your body. • Make smarter food choices. When visiting a holiday party buffet line or grabbing an on-the-go snack, think about the foods you choose. Look for low-calorie items that will still fill you up. Proteins, complex carbohydrates and vegetables are good choices. Avoid creamy dips and dressings, and if you want to try something fried or cheese-laden, do so only sparingly. • Be selective with sweets. Sweets are readily available during the holiday season. Rather than filling up your plate with a little “bite” of each dessert you want to try, select your favorite and then enjoy a reasonable portion. • Limit sampling while cooking. If you are entertaining others, cut down on tasting while you prepare the meal. Those calories can add up without you knowing it, and soon you’ve eaten an entire portion even before the festivities begin. • Pack healthy snacks. It’s always a good idea to have healthy snacks at the ready to

tame random hunger pangs. Bring a favorite treat with you while shopping or if you will be visiting others. This helps you control your portion size and can keep you from overeating. • Mind your drinks, too. Many beverages, including alcoholic beverages and sweetened soft drinks, are high in calories. A single serving of wine can have anywhere from 100 to 300 calories. It’s easy to lose count of caloric intake when indulging, but opt for low-calorie drinks or water whenever possible. • Increase your level of physical activity. Find ways to remain physically active during the holiday season. Park further away from mall entrances so you can walk a greater distance and burn more calories. Take a few extra laps around the mall. Opt for the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. If you’re at a party with upbeat music, get on the dance floor and work off some calories. Holiday weight gain may seem like an inevitability. However, with some forward thinking and smart choices, holiday celebrants can prevent weight gain this holiday season.

HELP KIDS OVERCOME A FEAR OF NEEDLES Immunizations are an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Physicians and various health organizations advise that children and adults adhere to a specific schedule of vaccinations that can help them develop antibodies to fend off a variety of illnesses. Unfortunately for kids who fear needles, most immunizations are administered intravenously. Children fearful of needles are typically hesitant, if not petrified, to receive their immunizations. However, failure to receive recommended vaccinations increases a child’s susceptibility to various diseases, and kids who do not receive their immunizations may be running afoul of the law. The

American Academy of Pediatrics’ immunization schedule calls for children to get the bulk of their vaccines before age two. However, additional vaccines must be administered later in life. And while many children outgrow their fear of needles as they approach adolescence, some may still resist. To make the immunization process less painful for children, parents can take certain steps. • Put on a smile. Children take their cues from their parents. If you show nerves or let on that you are nervous about the immunization shots, your son or daughter may take note of your apprehension and become even more scared of needles than

he or she already is. Make light of what is going to happen if the child understands what the visit is all about. Downplay any discomfort and resist the urge to say “don’t worry.” It may actually give the child the impression there is something to worry about. • Be open and honest. Older children may appreciate hearing the truth instead of being told a tall tale about the immunization process. Explain that the needle will only briefly penetrate the skin, meaning the procedure will be done very quickly. • Don’t make shots a form of punishment. The threat “behave or the doctor will give you a shot,” is not helpful at all. It will only compound

fears of shots and paint the picture that they are a punishment rather than a necessity. • Listen to concerns. Let your child speak to you about why he or she is nervous about receiving a shot. Offer your support in a warm, matter-of-fact way. • Offer a distraction. Let the child hold a video game or incentivize the process by promising a sweet or favorite treat, which can take your child’s focus off of the shot being administered. • Hold your child. Kids may find that sitting on a parent’s lap assuages their fears. For older children who can’t fit on your lap, let them hug you or hold your hand for comfort.

• Use a topical anesthetic. Ask the doctor or nurse if there is a numbing swab or spray that can be used to take the bite out of the needle. • Lead by example. Take your child with you when you receive vaccinations, so that

he or she can witness that the process is both quick and painless. Immunization shots are seldom fun for children or adults, but there are strategies to make the entire process less painful.

may experience disturbed sleep and find themselves waking up in early morning when they are unaccustomed to doing so. • Feelings of fatigue and an inability to adhere to one’s normal routine.

UNDERSTANDING SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER The tail end of Daylight Saving Time in 2016 occurs on November 6, when millions of people will turn their clocks back one hour. Few people enjoy turning the clocks back in autumn as much as they enjoy turning them forward in spring. Turning the clocks forward affords many people, in par-

ticular working professionals who spend much of their weekdays working indoors, a chance to enjoy some sunlight when leaving their offices each day. However, once the clocks are turned back, professionals typically find themselves leaving their offices under a cover of darkness. Some people easily adjust

to less daylight, while others experience a condition known as season affective disorder, or SAD. SAD is a disorder related to changes in seasons. According to the Mayo Clinic, the majority of people with SAD begin to experience symptoms in the fall and continue battling those symptoms throughout the winter. The

end of Daylight Saving Time occurs in early November, and the onset of SAD symptoms is no doubt related to the decreased exposure to daylight many people experience once clocks have been turned back. Those who suspect they might be susceptible to SAD can get a better grasp of the condition so they are capable of recognizing and responding to it should any symptoms appear. What Is SAD? Mental Health America, a leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness, defines SAD as a mood disorder associated with depression and related to seasonal variations of light. Though many people may be saddened when the clocks are turned back and the sun sets earlier than it does in the warmer months, MHA notes that a diagnosis of SAD can only be made after the symptoms of SAD have ap-

What Are The Symptoms Of SAD? Simply feeling bummed out that winter is on the horizon does not mean a person has SAD. The following are some of the more common symptoms of the disorder: • Depression marked by feelings of misery, guilt, hopelessness, despair, and apathy. A loss of self-esteem may also occur. • Feelings of anxiety that include tension and an inability to tolerate stress • Mood changes that are sometimes extreme; some SAD sufferers experience feelings of mania in spring and summer. • Changes in sleeping habits, such as a desire to oversleep and difficulty staying awake. Some people

Who Is Most Likely To Suffer From SAD? The Mayo Clinic notes that SAD is diagnosed more often in women than in men, and MHA notes that three out of four SAD sufferers are women. Young people are more likely than older people to get winter SAD, with MHA reporting that the main age of onset of SAD is between 18 and 30. Symptoms of SAD may worsen among people who have already been diagnosed with clinical depression or bipolar disorder. More information about seasonal affective disorder is available at www.mentalhealthamerica.net.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Ma i nt a i n i n g e n e r g y throughout the workday can sometimes be difficult. For busy professionals, compromised energy levels can be especially problematic, causing workers to fall behind and maybe even forcing them to work extra hours just to catch up. While infrequent days of low energy should not pose too great a threat, working professionals who routinely find their energy levels sagging by the end of the workday might want to take certain steps to boost their energy and ensure their productivity doesn’t wane. • Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediat-

rics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines. • Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the produc-

Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. • Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did

not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised. • Limit caffeine consumption. According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming more than 500 to 600 milligrams of caffeine per day can contribute to insomnia and lead to feelings of nervousness, restlessness and irritability, among others. While that afternoon cup of coffee might provide an immediate jolt, it could be contributing to sleeping problems that will affect your productivity in the days to come.

DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I read your recent column on caring for feral cats, and I disagree that such animals can never be tamed. I used to believe that as well, until seven years ago when a skin-andbones tiger cat showed up on my patio. The starved cat that I thought was dead when I first saw it is now a loving fat boy that sleeps with me every night. I’m not saying it was a fast or easy experience. It took a whole year before he would even sniff my finger, and much longer for me to convince

him that having his ear scratched would be awesome. I have two other cats that I am working with now. “Mitzi” will allow me to pet her, but does not like to be held, nor will she come into the house ... yet. “Bullwinkle” most likely will never come in, as he is deathly afraid of dogs and I have three. He sleeps in our barn instead, and shows up every morning for breakfast. I had him neutered through our local TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) program. So, while not all feral cats w ill become “normal,” loving felines, it is possible. Good luck. — D. In Palmyra, New Yorke DEAR D: Thank you for the encouragement! It takes a tremendous amount of patience to convince a feral cat to approach you. As you noted above, participating in a TNR program
