When I wrote this column on November 4, we were four days out, but by the time you read it the election will be over and all that will be left is the shouting or crying. As both campaigns drew to a close Hillary got nastier and nastier, and even with 650,000 plus emails surfacing, some Hillary supporters didn't pull from their candidate of choice, but neither did Donald Trump supporters. In the last few remaining days Mr. Trump stuck to his message, at times even jokingly reminding himself out loud to do just that. Whatever the final results, it's time to look ahead to the next four years and move forward. In this column I don't mind telling you I'm voting for Mike Pence; along with the deal comes Donald Trump. Mike Pence has an excellent track record as Governor of Indiana. He is a solid Christian man whose ideas align with mine, from his thoughts

and feelings on abortion to illegal immigrants. He has a strong political background, isn't a stranger to Washington, and has demonstrated the ability to work across the aisle. As I said, along with him comes Mr. Trump, who has a strong business background. He understands and has learned the hard way you can't spend more than you take in. He has a solid knowledge of the tax system — enough to take advantage of it legally — and is someone who can fix a broken system in that area, along with others. Mike Pence and Donald Trump, I felt, formed the perfect partnership. Plus I liked Trump's First 100 Days action plan. Hillary Clinton spent her final days on the campaign trail complaining about how unfair FBI Director James Comey had been to her, and her major surrogate, Barack Obama, was on the stump campaigning for corruption at its finest, also kicking Comey around.

My thought was: Why is he on the campaign trail for Mrs. Clinton on our dime? Shouldn't he be doing his job in Washington, D.C.? I really don't recall any sitting President doing what Obama did in his out-andout contempt for Donald Trump. Maybe he was afraid he wouldn't be appointed a Supreme Court Judge if Trump is elected. But at this point, it is what it is. In my opinion, whoever wins, it's not over because those of us who are offended by the corruption of Washington will continue to fight as those that turned a blind eye will continue to do the same thing. We haven't been a country together since 2008, and the problems aren't going to be solved on election day. Until next week.

Have you ever been in a place when you were knocking on heaven’s door? It’s a place of desperation. Jacob was running for his life. Having cheated his brother out of the birthright, Esau vowed to kill him. (Genesis 27:4) Jacob finds himself in a howling wasteland and exhausted. He takes a stone for a pillow and falls asleep. He was between a rock and a hard place. But he had a dream that changed his life. If you find yourself knocking on heaven’s door, follow the example of Jacob. W H E N YO U ’ R E BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE. During the Revolutionary War, General Washington’s army was demoralized and decimated by disease and lack of supplies. A classic painting captures the secret weapon of George Washington portraying him on his knees in prayer with his white horse standing beside him. God turned the tide for Washington’s army that night. Prayer knocks

on heaven’s door. As Jacob laid down and slept with a rock for a pillow, lay down your fear and scheming. Rest in the Lord. David declared, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures.” (Psalms 23:1-2) WHEN YOUR DREAM IS FROM GOD. Jacob had a dream of a ladder set up between heaven and earth. Angels descended and ascended the ladder and at the top of the ladder, Jacob saw the Lord. God spoke and gave Jacob a covenant blessing. “I am the Lord God of Abraham, your father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon you lie, to you will I give it and to your seed.” (Genesis 28:10-14) The same Lord that stood at the top of Jacob’s ladder is the same Lord who stood with the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace and the same Lord who stood at the stoning of Stephen. He’s the same Lord who stands with you. Stephen declared, “I see Jesus, standing at the Father’s right hand.” (Acts 7:56) When you see Jesus, you

will never be the same again. Jesus is the way maker, the chain breaker. When you’re knocking on heaven’s door, you need to see Jesus. W H E N YO U ’ R E LEAST AWARE, GOD OFTEN SHOWS UP U N E X P E C T E D LY. Jacob saw the Lord and exclaimed, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.” (Genesis 28:16) In your extremity, God often shows up at the midnight hour. Sometimes it is a serendipitous moment, divine providence, or a supernatural visitation of God. “And he was afraid and said, ‘How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God and this is the gate of heaven.” (Genesis 28:17) When the gates of heaven open the mercy and glory of God pour down. Isaiah reveals how to open heaven’s gates through praise. (Isaiah 60: 18-19) WHEN YOU SEE JESUS MAKE HIM THE LORD OF YOUR LIFE. Jacob made a vow to the Lord. “Then shall the Lord be my God.” (Genesis 28:20-22) He consecrated himself to God. When Paul encountered God on the road to Damascus, he called him “Lord.” (Acts 9) Lord means “one having power and authority over others.” Paul totally sold out to Jesus and God used him mightily. We can do no

less when we see the Lord. Isaiah prophesied of him. “I, even I, am the Lord and apart from me there is no savior.” (Isaiah 43:11) Make him Lord of your life “That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and shall believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9) God had not forsaken nor rejected Jacob. He had a marvelous destiny for him. When you are knocking on heaven’s door, look to the Lord Jesus. He has a wonderful destiny for you. More Apple Recipes • To keep apples fresh and crisp, keep them in the refrigerator. Yellow apples keep best in plastic bags with added moisture. Red apples need air to breathe. • In recipes when non-browning is important, use ascorbic acid such as Fruit Fresh. • Yellow Delicious and Cortland tend to remain white longer than most varieties. • It is recommended that you taste-test apples for your individual preferences and use your favorite varieties for eating and cooking. • 1 bushel of apples contains a minimum of 42 lbs. • 1 bushel has 125 medium or 88 very large apples. • 1 bushel of apples makes 15 to 18 quarts of applesauce. • 3 medium apples weigh about 1 lb. • 2 apples make about 1 cup of applesauce. • 1 apple makes about 1 cup of sliced or chopped apple.

VETERANS DAY FACTS AND FIGURES

V

eterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday. Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who sur vived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives.

Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada and Au s t r a l i a c e l e br ate Remembrance Day. Those who want to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts. • According to the American C ommunity Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female. • California, Texas and Florida comprise the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more. • Veterans consist of

people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Veterans serve in times of war and peace. • The word “veteran” comes from the Old English language and means “old, experienced soldier.” The first use of the word was documented in 1789. • Although many veterans are working, and the average annual income of male veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post-9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2 percent. • Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans

have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. • Between 1971 and 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978. • An American soldier was buried at the national cemeter y in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave. Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America’s brave soldiers.

Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service. Novemb er 11 is Veterans Day in the Un i t e d S t at e s a n d Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries, and that each falls on November 11 is no coincidence, as the day commemorates the anniversary of the end of

World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Many places around the world pause and remember fallen veterans on November 11, but a good majority of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day commemorative events focus on past and current veterans who are still alive. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. • When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant. • Attend a military parade with your family and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance. • Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home. • Ask your company if Ve t e r a n s D a y o r Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business

each year to pay homage to s e r v i c e me n and women. • Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. • Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. • Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. • Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. • Get involved with a military support charity that can provide muchneeded funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. • Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. • Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of honor at a special function. • Drive disabled veterans to doctors’ appointments or to run any errands. • Support a local VFW organization. • Create a scrapbook for a veteran in your life. • Cheer for or thank military personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves. • Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home. A r m i s t i c e D a y, Remembrance Day and Veterans Day are great ways to honor past and current military for their service and sacrifice.

RLC BANDS ARE HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES WITH STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS Local high school and community-member musicians can both find exciting opportunities as part of Rend Lake College’s Music Department. From scholarships to free performances to bands open to public participation, the program offers something for everyone. Director of Instrumental Ensembles at RLC, Joseph Ryker is doing everything he can to put Rend Lake performers in the public eye and local music back on the map. That initiative has led to the revitalization of ensembles and concerts and has led to some cool opportunities. “I just started the Jazz Band last spring. The students had a lot of fun, and I had a lot of fun. So, we were really excited to keep that going this semester. It has worked out really well,” Ryker said. In addition to his work with the Rend Lake College bands, Ryker goes out into the community to participate as a conductor and musician for other ensembles. From time to time, Ryker extends those oppor-

The next performance slated for the Music Department is the Fall Orchestra Concert set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13th in the RLC Theatre. That is the standalone concert fully featuring the community orchestra. Then, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17th at the RLC Theatre, the Rend Lake Concert Band and Concert Choir will take the stage for the 2016 Fall Concert. Admission is free for both events and the community

Ryker is utilizing the account to showcase behind-thescenes looks at the day in the life of an RLC musician. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A work-related situation that started last month takes on increasing importance this week. The choice is still yours as to how it will evolve. Be careful not to make quick judgments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) “Careful” is the watchword for the prudent Bovine this week. Don’t let your emotions overwhelm your logic. Try for balance as you maneuver through a touchy situation. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your energy levels rise to meet the challenges that will mark much of this month. New opportunities beckon. Look them over, but proceed cautiously before making any kind of decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your private life can be a problem this week, as a partner becomes more difficult. Resist a reaction you might regret. Instead of walking away, try to talk things out. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You should be your usual sunny self these days, as you bask in the admiration you adore. Enjoy it as you move into a new arena to confront an exciting upcoming challenge. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your perseverance reserves will be tapped frequently this week as you deal with the problems involved in making a new situation work for you. But it’ll all be worth it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ll find fewer roadblocks turning up as you continue to move ahead

with your plans. Expect some important news to come your way by mid-November. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Good news -- you finally get to the bottom of that pesky mystery you’ve been trying to solve for weeks by using some gentle persuasion to get someone to break his or her silence. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The best time to take on that important task is now. Move forward one step at a time so you can assess your progress and, if need be, change direction. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new opportunities you hoped to find this month are beginning to open up. Study them carefully to be sure you make the choice that’s best for you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Turn a disappointment into a learning experience. Check out possible weaknesses in your approach and strengthen them. A loyal colleague offers good advice. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your new situation offers opportunities to help you get the skills you’ll need in order to stop swimming in circles and finally move straight toward your goals. Go for it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sharp, logical mind and a quick intellect. You would make an excellent mystery writer. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Of course, there's room for debate over what qualifies as candy; breath mints and gum are usually included, along with the obvious — chocolate bars, hard candies and such. The tax code can get even more detailed than that, though; for instance, in Florida (which taxes candy but not groceries), marshmallows
