Have you ever been in a place when you were knocking on heaven’s door? It’s a place of desperation. Jacob was running for his life. Having cheated his brother out of the birthright, Esau vowed to kill him. (Genesis 27:4) Jacob finds himself in a howling wasteland and exhausted. He takes a stone for a pillow and falls asleep. He was between a rock and a hard place. But he had a dream that changed his life. If you find yourself knocking on heaven’s door, follow the example of Jacob. Washington’s army was demoralized and decimated by disease and lack of supplies. A classic painting captures the secret weapon of George Washington portraying him on his knees in prayer with his white horse standing beside him. God turned the tide for Washington’s army that night. Prayer knocks on heaven’s door. As Jacob laid down and slept with a rock for a pillow, lay down your fear and scheming. Rest in the Lord. David declared, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures.” (Psalms 23:1-2) WHEN YOUR DREAM IS FROM GOD. Jacob had a dream of a ladder set up between heaven and earth. Angels descended and ascended the ladder and at the top of the ladder, Jacob saw the Lord. God spoke and gave Jacob a covenant blessing. “I am the Lord God of Abraham, your father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon you lie, to you will I give it and to your seed.” (Genesis 28:1014) The same Lord that stood at the top of Jacob’s ladder is the same Lord who stood with the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace and the same Lord who stood at the stoning of Stephen. He’s the same Lord who stands with you. Stephen declared, “I see Jesus, standing at the Father’s right hand.” (Acts 7:56) When you see Jesus, you will never be the same again. Jesus is the way maker, the chain breaker. When you’re knocking on heaven’s door,

you need to see Jesus. WHEN YOU’RE LEAST AWARE, GOD OFTEN SHOWS UP UNEXPECTEDLY. Jacob saw the Lord and exclaimed, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.” (Genesis 28:16) In your extremity, God often shows up at the midnight hour. Sometimes it is a serendipitous moment, divine providence, or a supernatural visitation of God. “And he was afraid and said, ‘How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God and this is the gate of heaven.” (Genesis 28:17) When the gates of heaven open the mercy and glory of God pour down. Isaiah reveals how to open heaven’s gates through praise. (Isaiah 60: 18-19) WHEN YOU SEE JESUS MAKE HIM THE LORD OF YOUR LIFE. Jacob made a vow to the Lord. “Then shall the Lord be my God.” (Genesis 28:20-22) He consecrated himself to God. When Paul encountered God on the road to Damascus, he called him “Lord.” (Acts 9) Lord means “one having power and authority over others.” Paul totally sold out to Jesus and God used him mightily. We can do no less when we see the Lord. Isaiah prophesied of him. “I, even I, am the Lord and apart from me there is no savior.” (Isaiah 43:11) Make him Lord of your life “That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and shall believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9) God had not forsaken nor rejected Jacob. He had a marvelous destiny for him. When you are knocking on heaven’s door, look to the Lord Jesus. He has a wonderful destiny for you. What We Do:

HEIGHTS FINANCE

CORPORATION

When I wrote this column on November 4, we were four days out, but by the time you read it the election will be over and all that will be left is the shouting or crying. As both campaigns drew to a close Hillary got nastier and nastier, and even with 650,000 plus emails surfacing, some Hillary supporters didn't pull from their candidate of choice, but neither did Donald Trump supporters. In the last few remaining days Mr. Trump stuck to his message, at times even jokingly reminding himself out loud to do just that. Whatever the final results, it's time to look ahead to the next four years and move forward. In this column I don't mind telling you I'm voting for Mike Pence; along with the deal comes Donald Trump. Mike Pence has an excellent track record as Governor of Indiana. He is a solid Christian man whose ideas align with mine, from his thoughts and feelings on abortion to illegal immigrants. He has a strong political background, isn't a

stranger to Washington, and has demonstrated the ability to work across the aisle. As I said, along with him comes Mr. Trump, who has a strong business background. He understands and has learned the hard way you can't spend more than you take in. He has a solid knowledge of the tax system — enough to take advantage of it legally — and is someone who can fix a broken system in that area, along with others. Mike Pence and Donald Trump, I felt, formed the perfect partnership. Plus I liked Trump's First 100 Days action plan. Hillary Clinton spent her final days on the campaign trail complaining about how unfair FBI Director James Comey had been to her, and her major surrogate, Barack Obama, was on the stump campaigning for corruption at its finest, also kicking Comey around. My thought was: Why is he on the campaign trail for Mrs. Clinton on our dime? Shouldn't he be doing his job in Washington, D.C.? I really don't recall any

sitting President doing what Obama did in his out-and-out contempt for Donald Trump. Maybe he was afraid he wouldn't be appointed a Supreme Court Judge if Trump is elected. But at this point, it is what it is. In my opinion, whoever wins, it's not over because those of us who are offended by the corruption of Washington will continue to fight as those that turned a blind eye will continue to do the same thing. We haven't been a country together since 2008, and the problems aren't going to be solved on election day. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. In order for your letter to be considered for publication, you must provide your signature and an address and phone number where you can be reached. Addresses and phone numbers will not be published.

• To keep apples fresh and crisp, keep them in the refrigerator. Yellow apples keep best in plastic bags with added moisture. Red apples need air to breathe. • In recipes when non-browning is important, use ascorbic acid such as Fruit Fresh. • Yellow Delicious and Cortland tend to remain white longer than most varieties. • It is recommended that you taste-test apples for your individual preferences and use your favorite varieties for eating and cooking.

Breed Bans Don’t Deter Dog Attacks In early October, the city of Montreal began enforcing a bylaw that bans the ownership or adoption of any dog breed identified as a pit bull. Alongside of this, the city ordered any pit bulls in its shelters to be euthanized. The city council passed the measure after a dog attacked and killed a 55-year-old woman. A massive rescue effort was launched by organizations and individuals based outside the city to transfer dogs under a death sentence to new shelters, to foster some out, and otherwise try to save as many as possible. The reason so many people acted so swiftly was because of growing knowledge that breed-specific legislation simply doesn’t work. In fact, the city of Edmonton, Alberta, rescinded a similar ban in 2012 because it was difficult to enforce. A CBC article added that the number of dog bites in that city per year never changed, staying between 400 and 600, from a variety of breeds in addition to pit bulls. Banning one breed doesn’t stop the problem of dog attacks. I’ve seen aggressive dogs in many different breeds — including normally laid-back Labs who just couldn’t be approached safely — and I’ve met wonderfully behaved dogs from breeds considered to be aggressive, like Sally, the sweet and gentle pittie who, along with her owner, greets me on my morning walk. There isn’t a perfect so-

of duty have been dedicated on this day. Armistice Day origins Remembrance Day was once known as Armistice Day because it marks the signing of the armistice that put an end to the hostilities of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year, guns fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare between the Germans and Allied troops. The armistice agreement was signed in a French train carriage at 11 a.m. Later, the carriage where the historic event took place was placed in a specially constructed building to serve as a monument to the defeat of Germany. Although it was moved by German forces and later destroyed during World War II, after that war ended a replacement carriage, correct in every detail, was rededicated on Armistice Day in 1950.

What about the poppies? One of the unifying symbols of Remembrance Day is the poppy that is worn to honor lost soldiers. The bold, red color of the flower has become an enduring symbol of those who died so that others may be free. The poppy became a symbol for a specific reason. Some of the most concentrated and bloody fighting of World War I took place in Flanders, a region in western Belgium. As a result of the fighting, most signs of natural life had been obliterated from the region, leaving behind mud and not much else. The only living thing to survive was the poppy flower, which bloomed with the coming of the warm weather the year after fighting in the region had ceased. Poppies grow in disturbed soil and can lie dormant in the ground w it h out g e r m i n at i n g . Without the war, they may have never come to the surface. John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, was moved by the vision of poppies flowering in Flanders and wrote a poem titled "In Flanders Fields." After the poem was published, it received international acclaim, and the poppy became a popular symbol of those lost in battle. Men traditionally wear the poppy on the left side of the chest, where a military medal would be placed. Women wear it on the right side because that is where a widow would wear her husband's medals. Remembrance Day is celebrated every year, providing people humbled by the sacrifices of soldiers an opportunity to remember those soldiers' efforts to secure freedom.

VETERANS DAY FACTS AND FIGURES

V

eterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday. Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which wou l d b e re n ame d Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives. Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day. Those who want to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts. • According to the American Community Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female. • California, Texas and Florida comprise the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more. • Veterans consist of people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Veterans serve in times of war and peace. • The word “veteran” comes from the Old English language and means “old, experienced soldier.” The first use of the word was documented in 1789. • Although many veterans are working, and the average annual income of male veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2

percent. • Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. • Between 1971 and 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978. • An American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave. Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America’s brave soldiers.

REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS

T

he men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories. Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service. November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries, and that each falls on November 11 is no coincidence, as the day com-

memorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Many places around the world pause and remember fallen veterans on November 11, but a good majority of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day commemorative events focus on past and current veterans who are still alive. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. • When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant. • Attend a military parade with your family

and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance. • Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home. • Ask your company if Ve t e r a n s D a y o r Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women. • Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. • Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. • Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help

with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. • Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. • Get involved with a military support charity that can provide muchneeded funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. • Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. • Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of honor at a special function. • Drive disabled veterans to doctors’ appointments or to run any errands. • Support a local VFW organization. • Create a scrapbook for a veteran in your life. • Cheer for or thank military personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves. • Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home. A r m i s t i c e D a y, Remembrance Day and Veterans Day are great ways to honor past and current military for their service and sacrifice.

orld War II veterans are truly a dying breed. According to the Veterans Administration, approximately 492 World War II veterans die every day. Unfortunately, with these men and women die the stories and accounts that have never been written down, captured on film or told to grandchildren. As a result, World War II and the “greatest generation” that lived it, will soon seem as distant to today's young people as the Civil War is to my generation. But to those lives it has touched, directly or indirectly through loved ones, it will remain as large as life. My grandfather, Jerry Pinkowski, (1915-1993) was 26 years old when America entered World War II. He was considered 'unfit for service' due to a childhood injury to his arm that healed incorrectly. But with the Army’s need for personnel being what it was at the time, they accepted him along with many other “limited”

service men. He served as a mechanic in the 347th Ordnance Depot Company which was eventually attached to General George S. Patton’s famous Third Army. Although Grandpa got the “express tour” of Europe while chasing after Patton’s racing armored columns, he still found time to take photographs. Lots of them! Unfortunately, it was only through these photos that I was able to learn much of the details of my Grandpa’s service during the war. Like many World War II veterans he was pretty closed-lipped about his experiences in the war, and my family really wasn’t aware of the treasure trove of photograph negatives he had stashed away until after he lost his battle with cancer in 1993. I regretted not finding out more about the places he'd been, the things he'd seen, and the people he knew. I had missed the golden opportunity to hear my grandpa’s first-hand accounts, but Continued on page 17

the one thousand photographs that he left behind told a story all their own. O ve r t he ye ars I have enjoyed studying his photograph collection. Casually at first, then later becoming more and more serious about unravelling the mysteries contained on the celluloid. The photos’ subjects are varied and range from ordinary everyday scenes of him and his comrades working, to 13th century gothic cathedrals surrounded by crumbling ruins. In 2000 I published some of them on a website called Lost Images Of World War II, inviting visitors to offer their identifications and observations about the photos. That project springboarded me into more extensive research where I’ve been able to retrace Grandpa’s tracks across Europe, and also talk with the very few surviving members of his unit that I could find. In August of 2011, I launched a new, more detailed website which features several hundreds of

17

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

Grandpa's photos along with summaries, analyses and modern day photo comparisons. The new website can be seen at www.lostimagesofww2. com I urge all World War II veterans to write your memoirs. Tell your stories. Show your old photos to your family while you can still tell the stories behind them. Shining through in those stories will be the values and traditions of a time when sacrifice was commonplace, valor was all-in-a-day's-work and truck drivers, college students, farm boys, and carpet store owners were heroes. Through loved ones, the struggles of our Nation during the war have touched my life, and I know that my grandfather played an important part. I understand the sacrifices that my grandfather made, and the ones he was willing to make during a time when hundreds of thousands made the ultimate sacrifice. This selfless attitude is characteristic of American veterans—past and present. We must never forget those who went before us and made life in America as it is today possible.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A work-related situation that started last month takes on increasing importance this week. The choice is still yours as to how it will evolve. Be careful not to make quick judgments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) “Careful” is the watchword for the prudent Bovine this week. Don’t let your emotions overwhelm your logic. Try for balance as you maneuver through a touchy situation. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your energy levels rise to meet the challenges that will mark much of this month. New opportunities beckon. Look them over, but proceed cautiously before making any kind of decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your private life can be a problem this week, as a partner becomes more difficult. Resist a reaction you might regret. Instead of walking away, try to talk things out. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You should be your usual sunny self these days, as you bask in the admiration you adore. Enjoy it as you move into a new arena to confront an exciting upcoming challenge. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your perseverance reserves will be tapped frequently this week as you deal with the problems involved in making a new situation work for you. But it’ll all be worth it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ll find fewer roadblocks turning up as you continue to move ahead

with your plans. Expect some important news to come your way by mid-November. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Good news -- you finally get to the bottom of that pesky mystery you’ve been trying to solve for weeks by using some gentle persuasion to get someone to break his or her silence. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The best time to take on that important task is now. Move forward one step at a time so you can assess your progress and, if need be, change direction. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new opportunities you hoped to find this month are beginning to open up. Study them carefully to be sure you make the choice that’s best for you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Turn a disappointment into a learning experience. Check out possible weaknesses in your approach and strengthen them. A loyal colleague offers good advice. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your new situation offers opportunities to help you get the skills you’ll need in order to stop swimming in circles and finally move straight toward your goals. Go for it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sharp, logical mind and a quick intellect. You would make an excellent mystery writer. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

by Samantha Weaver • It was Bulgarian-French philosopher Tzvetan Todorov who made the following sage observation: "We should not be simply fighting evil in the name of good, but struggling against

Wednesday, November 9, 2016 the certainties of people who claim always to know where good and evil are to be found." • It's interesting to note that in 16 states, you won't pay taxes on the candy you buy for trickor-treaters; for tax purposes, candy is categorized as groceries. Of course, there's room for debate over what qualifies as candy; breath mints and gum are usually included, along with the obvious — chocolate bars, hard candies and such. The tax

code can get even more detailed than that, though; for instance, in Florida (which taxes candy but not groceries), marshmallows are tax-exempt, but marshmallow candies are not. • The seahorse is the only animal whose head is positioned at a right angle to its body. • Recently retired sportscaster Vin Scully served 67 seasons as the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers — starting in Brooklyn in 1950, then moving with the team to Los Angeles in 1958 — making him the longest-tenured broadcaster with a single team in the history of professional sports. Over the years he's had many fans, including Chris Carter, creator of the long-running TV series "The X Files." One of the main characters, Dana Scully (played by actress Gillian Anderson), was named for the sportscaster. • In William Shakespeare's day, the sound of thunder often was described as a "rouncerobble-hobble." *** Thought for the Day : "Patriotism, n. Combustible rubbish ready to the torch of any one ambitious to illuminate his name. In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit it is the first." — Ambrose Bierce © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
