For NFL, More Means Less The NFL is under siege, and some industry analysts are pointing at the great American game's sudden decline in TV ratings as proof. According to Nielson, the company most trusted to tell us about who is watching what and when, ratings this season are down somew here b etwe en 10 percent and 15 percent, depending on the day you're watching. Is there any reason to worry? Of course not. The NFL is still the mostwatched programming in these United States. During this decade, the NFL Sunday Night Football broadcast on NBC is the most-watched television series there is, averaging a little over 15 percent of all households watching TV. The lowestrated games still dwarf the number of people watching anything else. More than 200 million individual viewers have tuned in to watch a game over the past five years. That's more than 60 percent of our entire country. So broadcasters and advertising agencies can

rest easy. Still, anytime any commodity's value drops by 10 percent in the growth-obsessed American business model, there is an issue that needs to be addressed. A backup quarterback kneeling for the anthem is not causing 20 million people to tune out. Certainly the counter-programming of the election debates factors into the decline, but it's more likely a case of the NFL shooting itself it in the foot, and that problem lays squarely at the feet of commissioner Roger Goodell and the team owners. This is a league that delights in destroying their players. They will fine their biggest stars the equivalent of the manufacturer's suggested retail price of a Buick for the crime of taking off their helmet or pressing a finger to their lips after scoring a touchdown. They'll humiliate and suspend their biggest star, Tom Brady, and throw shade on the Patriots, the watereddown league's only perennial powerhouse, over the lack of air pressure. But player concussions? No such thing — and don't you dare try

the shoppers

and prove it. Don't want to stand for the pregame Francis Scott Key song? Fine ... but you better make it to the post-Katie Perry halftime press conference or that's another Buick you won't be buying, buck-o. Gambling problem? No, it's all just "fantasy" (but pay no attention to the Raiders moving to Vegas for $750 million, that is, unless you pay taxes). Beat up your girlfriend, your wife or your kid? Here, take a multi-million dollar contract and report to camp or just skip the team flight to London. And everyone knows you can't kill anybody if you're the best player on defense. Games used to be an event ... they used to make really cool films about them, too. Now you can't go a couple of hours without seeing a game because it's on Thursday night, Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, late Sunday afternoon, Sunday night and Monday night. The only break you get from the NFL is college football all day Saturday, and when the college season is over, the NFL will play on Saturday, too. Less used to mean more for the NFL, but maybe that's why the league has acted so confounded to learn that "more of " is leading to "less than." Maybe there can be too much of a good thing after all. NEW PARTNERSHIP WILL HELP VETERANS Recently the Social Security Administration announced the launch of a new Health IT initiative with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that enables all Social Security disability case processing sites to receive medical records electronically from all VA facilities. Veterans will receive a faster decision on their Social Security disability claim, speeding them and their dependents through this new process. Both agencies will save time and money with an

automatic request through the eHealth Exchange. The new Health IT program was tested successfully at Social Security locations around the country. On Veteran’s Day, November 11, the eHealth Exchange will go live, nationally, to all Social Security disability case processing sites. Social Security requests nearly 15 million medical records annually from healthcare providers and organizations to make medical deci-

sions on about three million disability claims. Medical documentation is essential to make a disability determination. Historically, the agency obtained medical records through a manual process (mail, fax, secure mail). This new national initiative puts in place an automated process to obtain medical records electronically without human intervention. “VA is currently improving quality of life by enabling Veterans to share their health

information with federal partners and integrating their data into a safe and secure healthrelated consumer application,” said Dr. David Shulkin, Under Secretary for Health of the Department of Veterans Affairs. “Currently, when eligible Veterans apply for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits the average wait time for Social Security to receive paper records from VA can take months; this partnership allows Social Security and VA to share the Veteran’s health information electronically in minutes. The Social Security and VA partnership allows VA

to continue to be a leader in interoperability efforts among federal partners while improving overall quality of life for our Veteran patients.” This partnership adds the VA to Social Security’s more than 50 other Health IT partners, including the Department of Defense, in approximately 7,000 facilities across the United States providing electronic health records. Social Security’s goal is to continue expanding the number of healthcare organizations and federal agencies providing electronic health records within a safe and

secure environment. To learn more about Health IT, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/disability ssi/hit. Social Security offers two other programs to expedite disability claims filed by veterans. Wounded Warriors and veterans with a VA disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent & Total have their Social Security disability claims treated as high priority and receive expedited decisions. For more information about these programs, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ people/veterans.

Free public viewing dates and times are: Friday, November 18 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday,

November 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., featuring ‘Cookies with Santa’ from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and wrapping up on Sunday, November 20 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Children's Home is honored to have Crossroads Community Hospital as their overall 2016 Festival of Trees event sponsor, plus First MidIllinois Bank & Trust and Kemper CPA Group as their presenting sponsors, and Tony Wielt State Farm, National Railway, and Peacock Printing as their ‘Friends of the Festival’ sponsors, in addition to refreshment and in-kind sponsors. This is a free public event, however trees will be available for purchase through a blind-bid. The highest bidder for each tree will be selected at the end of the festival. the youth and families they serve. “We’re excited that the Festival of Trees has already grown in popularity just since making it a ‘standalone’ event for the first time last year. Our hope is that even more people in the community will have an opportunity to attend this year as we’ve extended the event through Sunday. Everyone has worked so hard on their trees, and the staff of UMCH is proud to continue this beautiful holiday tradition at the Granada. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to collaborate with the community, and we want this to be a festive weekend that the entire family can enjoy,” s ays Sandy Sinnett, Director of Development. The annual Live Nativity will also be held on Friday December 2, on the UMCH campus. Please visit www. umchome.org for more information.

Editor's note: Just prior to press, President-Elect Donald J. Trump appointed Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff and Steve Bannon as Chief Strategist. After a stunning victory last Tuesday, November 8, 2016, Donald J. Trump was elected to become the 45th President of this great country. So now what? After the shock wave settles and the crazy violent protesting stops — and trust it will, one way or another — Clinton supporters and Trump haters will have to learn to live with President Donald Trump just like half of us had to learn to live with Barack Obama! It's no secret I did not vote for Obama. But although most of what he did throughout his eight years in the oval office I didn't agree with, I kept him and his team in prayer. I'm hoping those of you who didn't support Trump, after you get over the disappointment, will do the same for the new Presidentelect. I also have to say I have been disgusted and disappointed with the liberal media, especially MSNBC, and people like Harry Reid and Al Sharpton as they spread hate and unrest, at times almost encouraging violence. However, maybe Al Sharpton's big issue is that the new Attorney General won't give him a free pass on his $4.5 million owed in back taxes. Time will tell. The bottom line is Trump won! At this point Mrs. Clinton is pointing a finger

at James Comey, the current FBI Director, for what she calls her heartbreaking loss. The reality is Hillary Rodham Clinton was a flawed candidate and can only blame herself. She suffered from incredibly low trust from voters, including in her own party, and more legal issues than anyone in the past political arena that I can remember. The problem is the Democratic Party didn't have a decent candidate for the President of the United States. But turning the page, forward to Donald J. Trump. Everyone is waiting for the jobs in Washington to be filled. Who will be the new Chief of Staff ? I personally believe it's between two people. The first is Reince Priebus, the current Chairman of the Republican National Committee. The other name that pops into my mind is Steve Bannon, an American businessman and media executive. In August 2016 he was designated the Chief Executive Officer of the 2016 campaign. My first guess is Reince Priebus! Next up, Tr ump's Cabinet-in-waiting. Trump's transition team has already spent some time the past several months quietly building a short list who could comprise one of the most eclectic and controversial Presidential cabinets in modern history. Some names being tossed around are: Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, Ben Carson,

Sen. Bob Corker, Sen. Jeff Sessions, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton. Other possibilities are Arizona Governor Jan B r e w e r, O k l a h o m a Governor Mary Fallin and Florida Governor Rick Scott. These are only a few of the names being tossed around. So what can we all expect to be Trump's top priorities? 1) Health care (to repeal and replace Obamacare). Not two days apart, not two months apart, but an immediate transition. 2) Immigration. 3) Jobs. 4) Filling Supreme Court seats. On to why or what happened. 1) People wanted something different. Four years of Clinton would have been an extension of Obama. 2) Trump was totally unpredicted, but especially underestimated. 3) The silent majority spoke. We were worn out with crazy liberalism, from gun control to violation of the Constitution. 4) Not to mention Benghazi and the email scandal among other discrepancies. So the bottom line is, it's time to drain the swamp. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to info@theshoppersweekly.com or drop it off at the office on 301 E. Broadway. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Who is Jesus? Perhaps the most momentous question in all the world for you to answer is, who is Jesus? One’s eternal destiny hangs on the answer to this question. I’ve asked numerous people that question. Some say, he was a good moral teacher, he was a Jewish rabbi who was crucified, he was a prophet, he is the Son of God who died for the sins of the world and rose again on the third day. Jesus asked his disciples, “’Who do people say that the Son of man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah, but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ And Simon Peter answered and said, ‘Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon BarJonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to

you, but my Father who is in heaven.’” (Matthew 16:13-17) I pray that God will give you a revelation of who Jesus is. Oswald Chambers said, “Once you really see Jesus you can never be the same.” The writer of Hebrews gave us one of the greatest God inspired treatises on Christology concerning who Jesus is. Consider this powerful life changing revelation in Hebrews 1 and ask yourself, according to this scripture passage, “Who is Jesus?” JESUS IS THE HEIR OF ALL THINGS. “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets . . . in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things.” (Hebrews 1:1-2) JESUS IS THE CREATOR OF THE WORLD. “Through whom also He made the world.” (Hebrews 1:2) John reveals that “all things came into being by Him.” (John 1:1-3)

7

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area JESUS IS THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF THE FATHER BODILY. (Hebrews 1:3) “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature.” (Hebrews 1:3) JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD. “And upholds all things by the word of His power.” (Hebrews 1:3; John 1:1-2) JESUS IS THE SACRIFICE FOR SINS. “When He made purification of sins.” (Hebrews 1:3) John the Baptist introduced Him as, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) JESUS IS THE LORD OF GLORY. “He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (Hebrews 1:3) This is the place of power, authority, and glory. J E SU S T H E NA M E AB OVE ALL NAMES. “Having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they” (Hebrews 1:4; Philippians 2:6-11) Jesus is Lord. JESUS IS THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. “Thou are My Son, today I have begotten you?” (Hebrews 1:5; John 3:16) JESUS IS VERY GOD. “And let all the angels of God worship Him . . . But of the Son He says, your throne, O God, is forever and ever.” (Hebrews 1:7-9)

JESUS IS THE KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Hebrews 1:8-9) He is the prophesied righteous branch of David. (Jeremiah 23:5-6; Hebrews 7:1-2) JESUS IS THE ANOINTED ONE. He is Christ, the Messiah. (Hebrews 1:9) JESUS IS LORD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH. (Hebrews1:10-11) JESUS IS THE LORD OF HOSTS. “Who makes His angels winds and His ministers a flame of fire.” (Hebrews 1:7, 13-14) He is the creator and commander of heavens armies. (Jeremiah 32:7; 33:1516) Who is Jesus? Martin Luther wrote, “In his life, Christ is an example, showing us how to live; in his death, he is a sacrifice, satisfying for our sins; in his resurrection, a conqueror; in his ascension, a king; in his intercession, our high priest.” Who is Jesus to you? “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Turkey With Stuffing

HOURS 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Tuesday thru Friday • 9:00 am – Noon Saturday

1 turkey (12 lbs.) Fruit and Sausage Stuffing 1 T. salt or Wild Rice Stuffing 2 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup dry white wine or white vermouth Remove giblets from turkey. Rub turkey inside and out with salt and pepper and sprinkle cavity with about 3 T. of wine. Fill body cavity loosely with Fruit and Sausage Stuffing; do not pack tightly. Fill neck cavity with Wild Rice Stuffing. Sew or skewer openings; truss legs and wings against body. Place turkey on rack in roasting pan and brush with melted butter. Roast in preheated 325° oven about 4 hours, basting occasionally with pan drippings and remaining wine. Turkey is done when leg joint moves easily and meat thermometer inserted in center of stuffing registers 165°. Remove from oven and let rest, tented with foil, in warm place 15 minutes before carving. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

PRE-

Fruit and Sausage Stuffing

1 lb. sausage meat 1 tsp. marjoram 1/ cup butter 1 tsp. salt 1 cup chopped onion 1/2 tsp. pepper 1 cup chopped celery 1/2 tsp. sage 2 quarts bread cubes 1/2 cup water or turkey broth 2 cups cut-up mixed dried fruits Brown sausage meat in large skillet, stirring with fork. Remove meat to large bowl, pouring off fat. Add butter, onion and celery to skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring, 5 minutes. Add bread cubes, turning to brown. Add mixture to sausage in bowl. Add remaining ingredients; toss until well mixed. Adjust seasoning to taste. Cool before using to stuff turkey. Makes enough for 12-pound turkey.

Wild Rice Stuffing

1 (6 oz.) pkg. long grain and 1/3 cup chopped walnuts wild rice blend 3 T. butter 1/2 cup chopped onion Prepare rice blend in saucepan as directed on label, but reduce water to 2 cups and cooking time to 20 minutes. Saute onion and walnuts in butter until onion is soft; stir into rice mixture. Cool before using to stuff neck cavity.

Turkey Gravy

Neck and gizzard from turkey Salt and pepper to taste 4 cups water 2 whole cloves 1 stalk celery 2 T. flour 1 small onion Pinch of sage 1 bay leaf While turkey is roasting, make broth for gravy: Place turkey neck and gizzard in saucepan with water, celery, onion, bay leaf, salt, pepper and cloves. Bring to boil and skim off foam. Cover and simmer about 1¼ hours or until gizzard is tender. Cool. Strain broth, reserving gizzard. Chop gizzard meat very finely, discarding fat. After turkey has been removed from roasting pan, skim off excess fat from drippings remaining in pan. Sprinkle flour into pan, stirring to incorporate all the brown bits on the side. Cook over low heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Gradually add 1½ cups strained turkey broth, chopped gizzard, sage and more salt and pepper to taste. Bring to boil, stirring until well blended. Pour into gravy boat. Makes about 1½ cups.

Yam Puff

Don't double this recipe! Make two separate dishes. 4 cups cut-up cooked or canned 3/4 tsp. salt yams or sweet potatoes 1/4 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup butter, melted 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup light cream 4 egg whites 4 eggs, separated Mash yams with melted butter in large bowl. Beat in cream, egg yolks, salt, pepper and cinnamon. Beat egg whites (8) until stiff but not dry and fold into yam mixture. Spoon into buttered 6-cup souffle dish. Bake in preheated 325° oven 30 minutes or until puffed and golden. Makes 8 to 10 servings. NOTE: To cook yams or sweet potatoes, cover and boil in just enough salted water to cover until they can be pierced easily with fork, about 40 minutes. Drain; rinse in cold water. Peel when cool enough to handle.

Cranberry Orange-Pear Relish

2 small oranges, peeled or unpeeled 1 lb. fresh cranberries 1 firm pear 1¼ cups sugar Quarter oranges and discard center pith and seeds. Quarter pear and discard core and seeds. Pick over cranberries and rinse. Put oranges, pear and cranberries through food chopper. Add sugar and mix well. Chill at least 1 hour. Makes 3 to 4 cups. ***

National Bible Week is promoted by the National Bible Association (originally the Laymen's National Committee), a non-denominational group of businessmen founded in 1940 and devoted to the application of the Golden Rule in daily life. program that was broadcast to kick off the first National Bible Week scheduled for December 8-14, 1941; Pearl Harbor had been bombed just hours before. Yet, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the significance of the beginning of National Bible Week is almost, for many Americans, a matter of historical amnesia. Like so many, many other moments in American history, Christians were presented with a reason to be proud of their heritage. Consider the following Founding Fathers and their thoughts on the Bible. John Adams . . . signer of the Declaration of Independence; Judge; Diplomat; One of Two Signers of the Bill of Rights; Second President of the United States. Happy they who are enabled to obey them in all situations! . . . My only hope of salvation is in the infinite transcendent love of God manifested to the world by the death of His Son upon the Cross. Nothing but His blood will wash away my sins [Acts 22:16]. I rely exclusively upon it. Come, Lord Jesus! Come quickly! "The Bible, when not read in schools, is seldom read in any subsequent period of life… The Bible… should be read in our schools in preference to all other books because it contains the greatest portion of that kind of knowledge which

Art Deco Q: I have become fascinated by Art Deco after purchasing a cocktail set from the 1930s at a flea market in Chicago. Can you recommend a good general reference? — Laura, Naperville, Illinois A: Judith Miller claims in her new book, "Art Deco: Living With the Art Deco Style," that Art Deco completely transformed all branches of design, from the fine and decorative arts to transport, product design, fashion, graphic design and even architecture. The clean lines of Art Deco make it classic and timeless, and she points out what to look for as a collec-

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m really excited — my mom has decided we can get a kitten! We’re going to adopt one from the local shelter. Do you have any advice on picking the best cat? — Jaynah and Sherar in Poughkeepsie, New York DEAR JAYNAH AND SHERAR: First of all, congratulations! It’s exciting to get your first pet. And I’m glad you’re choosing to adopt from a shelter. While I’ve always liked to say that we don’t pick cats, they pick us, that’s not entirely true. Sometimes it takes a little time to find that perfect fit. With

kittens, it’s even harder, because they’re almost universally cute. When you visit the shelter, ask if you’re allowed to play with the kittens before choosing one, or to observe them in a play area outside of their cages. Note how they interact with each other and with humans. Are they confident or aggressive? Standoffish, or anxious and shy? Will they play with a toy or string that is dangled in front of them? Note the kittens’ general health. It’s easy to spot a potential problem if a cat is listless, won’t play, has visible sores, shakes its head frequently or has trouble walking. Most shelters are open about a cat’s known health problems. That way potential owners can decide if they want to take on the costs of bringing an adopted cat back to health. Again, take your time and don’t commit to one kitten immediately. If there

by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved Scottish author J.M. Barrie, creator of Peter Pan, who made the following sage observation: "Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves." • Among the Balonda people, an African tribe that dwells along the Zambezi River, it was once customary for a groom to promise that he'll supply

kindling wood to his mother-in-law for the rest of her life. • Those who study such things — word mavens with a penchant for statistics, presumably — have determined that, on average, English-language text contains 56 e's for every q. • A fisherman in the Philippines recently revealed a treasure that he'd

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some changes might seem confusing at first, especially to an Aries whose impatience levels are pretty shaky this week. Take it one step at a time, Lamb, and soon all will be made clear. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That difficult situation you’ve been dealing with continues to call for careful handling. Avoid quickly made choices that might not stand up when they’re finally put to the test. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still have lots of evaluating to do before you can consider making a commitment. It’s better to move cautiously than to risk stumbling into a major misunderstanding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously peevish partner offers to be more helpful with your problems. But remember: The final choice is yours. Be guided by what you feel is the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As the Big Cat, you sometimes can be pretty rough on those you suspect of betrayal. The best advice is to pull in those claws and listen to the explanation. It might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your inner voice usually guides you well. But a note of caution: This is a period of mixed signals for you, so be careful that you don’t misunderstand the messages you’re getting. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Cupid’s call beckons both single Librans looking for a new love, as well

been keeping under his bed for 10 years: a 75pound natural pearl with an estimated value of $100 million. Evidently, after finding the pearl in a giant clam, he decided to keep it as a good-luck charm. The "Pearl of Puerto," as it's known, blew the world record out of the water (pun intended). The previous record holder for largest natural pearl was the "Pearl of Lao-Tsu" (sometimes called the "Pearl of Allah"), which weighs in at a mere 14 pounds. • The female Jesus bird is the one in charge, it would seem. She controls her own territory, allowing several male birds to build

as couples hoping to strengthen their relationships. A workplace problem is quickly resolved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It’s been a hectic time for you, and you might want to take a break to restore both body and soul. You’ll then be set to face new challenges later this month. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good idea to take a more conservative approach to your financial situation right now. Some plans made earlier this year might need readjusting. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a fine time to move boldly into those new opportunities I promised would open up for you. Check them over, and then choose the best one for you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Your self-assurance is growing stronger, and you should now feel more confident about making that long-deferred decision about a possible commitment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re very close to reaching your goal. But be wary of distractions that can lure you off-course and leave you stranded far away from where you really want to be. Then she lays eggs in all the nests, and the males incubate them. • Before the Beach Boys were the Beach Boys, they considered naming their band the Pendletons. • The name "toadstool" actually has nothing to do with toads. The word is derived from the German words "tod," which means "death," and "stuhl," which means "stool." *** Thought for the Day: "Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." — Edgar Allan Poe © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
