We all hope you're happy now, Chicago. The World Series championship ... I mean, that's just great for you, Chicago, except for one little thing: You ruined sports. Yes, we know how much you detested being the "loveable losers." We know how badly you wanted to be like the rest of the obnoxious winners across this great land. We hope you got your money's worth at the bars in Wrigleyville, hope it was ever ything you ever wished it could be, because you took away the one charming thing left in team sports. America is now completely devoid of a loveable loser, and there doesn't appear to be any heir apparent. In essence, the Cubs success has left no successors to the (non) crown. Green Bay fans, New Orleans Saints fans ... they have been satiated. You could have made a case for the New York Rangers fans that had to endure the chants of "1940," or the Boston Red Sox fans that

had to gnash their teeth amid jeers of "1918" while being force fed a steady diet of Babe Ruth fables. The Royals won the World Series. Hell, even the Maryland Terrapins won an NCAA basketball championship. The Cubs were the last team that everyone kind of pulled for deep, deep down (St. Louis being the notable exemption), and there is no team on the horizon that even remotely fits the bill to replace them. First of all, let's dispel the myth that Chicago has b e en championship starved. This generation has seen the Second City finish first more often than any other city in America since 1990 when it comes to championships. When you add up all of the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL championship wins from 1990 to today, Chicago leads the pack with 11 wins. Boston (9), New York (9) and Los Angeles (8) bow to you, and you're not going to get any sympathy from anyone for being forced to watch Michael Jordan win six titles. You were never losers ... and with the ex-

ception of those stuck inside O'Hare for a layover, everyone likes Chicago, so knock it off. The question now is, whom do we collectively pull for? The Buffalo Bills would have been a good candidate, but let's face it, you can't root for the Ryan brothers. Notre Dame? Nah ... win or lose, they air every week on NBC. Rutgers? No ... they're too stabby in New Brunswick. You can't root for the Cleveland Indians as long as they insist on using that ridiculous, racist mascot, although you can now make a case for the Browns — post-Johnny Football. I'm thinking that maybe the St. Louis Blues could work, or maybe the Sacramento Kings, but they're not sexy enough, really. Army, Navy and Air Force ... imagine if an armed forces squad could make it to the NCAA playoffs and knock off Alabama ... those are teams I think we all can get behind. Sure it sounds a bit crazy, but weirder things have happened ... just ask the newly minted "lifelong" Cubs fan in the next cubicle. But to paraphrase Chicago's own Chance the Rapper, hope you're happy, hope you're real happy, Chicago ... that was such a selfish thing to do. Cocoa and chocolate drinks are loved by young and old alike. Special equipment is not required for most cocoa and chocolate drinks. They do, however, need good quality cocoa and chocolate to achieve the richest flavor. Make sure that both are fresh and keep plenty of cold milk on hand. Flavored syrups and malts open up a lot of great possibilities, so keep them in your pantry. My children always loved cocoa and now my grandchildren line up for their favorite drink. Enjoy these recipes; no special occasion is necessary.

SALVATION ARMY KETTLE CAMPAIGN Christmas Is Coming! It is that special time of year when the community and visitors are asked to support the Salvation Army Kettle Campaign. Because there is no Salvation Army Store in Jefferson County, First United Methodist Church has assumed the responsibility for manning the kettles throughout the holiday season. Ninety percent of all the monies collected are returned to Angels On Assignment, a ministry of First United Methodist Church, and are used to feed and support those in need in Jefferson County. Kettles will be located at Kmar t , Kro ge r, and WalMart from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Friday and Saturday beginning the day after Thanksgiving. A kettle will also be out at Kroger

Dear Editor, It is not surprising that the mainstream media, the Democrats and the talk show hosts were taken aback by Donald Trump's victory. The above dwell in a false reality, delusional that change is not needed and that the status quo is acceptable. Citizens are tired of all the faulty judgements and the irresponsible decisions of the past thirty years. Billions and trillions of dollars have been wasted in needless wars in countries where we should never have been; an irrational

national debt due to ludicrous spending that's crippl i ng to a g row i ng economy; corruption and tax evasion of overseas accounts; the high costs of living; and the thousands of jobs leaving the United States for less-demanding workers and tax systems. Republicans are not as smart as they think they are and are out of touch with much of the country, but they do have a grasp that certain change is needed for that stability and positive growth in the United States. In the news: • Fidel Castro dies • Donald Trump's selection process continues • Jill Stein wants a recount • Hillary Clinton to join recount • Nancy Pelosi challenged by Tim Ryan Former Cuban dictator for more than fifty years, Fidel Castro, age 90, died last week. Multiple generations of Cuban-Americans rejoiced in the streets of Miami at his passing. The Castro regime was responsible for harming, financially destroying, imprisoning and killing many of their family members. Meanwhile, many in Cuba are mourning his death, while those agreeing with the Cuban-Americans are remaining quiet, fearing reprisal. The Cuban government remains in the hands of Raúl Castro, Fidel's younger brother, who almost a decade ago succeeded Fidel because of his health. Little is expected to change in Cuba because of Fidel Castro's death, but obviously under the Barack Obama administration, economic sanctions have been lifted and trade with Cuba has become a reality. We'll

have to wait and see what happens with the new Trump administration. But speaking of Trump, his selection of cabinet members and others seems to be at a record pace. And, of course from the beginning, the mainstream media questioned his timetable for not making selections more quickly. The fact is Trump made more selections in the first two weeks than the last eight presidents. Oh well, we know the left-leaning media has no intention of being fair. And speaking of fair, Jill Stein is asking for a recount vote in certain states. Although ridiculous and not affecting her outcome, it is her right to do so if it meets the requirements. Recently, the Hillary Clinton camp says they will join in the recount, because Stein's recount is for the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Is it just me, or does something seem a "little fishy" here? Jill Stein, who received 1% of the national vote, wants a recount in the three states that the Clinton camp thought they would never lose. So much for Hillary accepting the

results of the election. If you know the history of the Clintons, just read between the lines. Come on Hillary, it's over! And speaking of over, is the leadership of Nancy Pel o s i ove r ? Oh i o Congressman Tim Ryan is challenging her for the Minority Leader of the Democrats in the House. Ryan states the number of House seats lost under Pelosi's time as leader is not acceptable anymore. A new vision and plan is needed for the Democrats. Pelosi's response to the up coming vote on November 30: "I have two thirds of the votes" and "Of the 65 women in the House, I have at least 50 supporting me." Until next week. benefit from “learning by earning” and developed five valuable life skills – goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Proceeds for the NCM program help GSSI develop leadership programs for girls, recruit and train adult volunteers, improve and maintain camp properties and provide financial assistance so Girl Scouting is available to all girls. One of the successful components of the NCM Program was the Gift of Caring option. Customers could purchase a can of Honey Roasted Peanuts that, instead of enjoying themselves, would be donated to US military troops. Through Gift of Caring, over 2,000 cans of Honey Roasted Peanuts were purchased for the military. “The success of the Nut, Candy & Magazine Program wouldn’t be possible if it were not for the great work of our amazing girls, their supportive parents and our fantastic volunteers,” said Kelly Jansen, GSSI Director of Product Program. “Not

The Girl Scout Mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science, program robots and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. GSSI serves approximately 13,000 girls and over 4,800 adult volunteers throughout southern Illinois. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Lessons from Righteous Job "He's poorer than Job's turkey?" I've heard some "old-timers" use that expression. Actually, Job was anything but poor. The Bible tells us that Job was perfect, upright, the wealthiest, and the greatest of all the men of the then known world. (Job 2:1-3) It was because of the testing and suffering that Job went through that helps many people identify with Job's experiences in life. Job served God faithfully and yet received the tragic news that the Sabeans had stolen his livestock and all of his servants had been killed. Later, "the fire of God" (probably lightening) killed the rest of his sheep and his servants. Job then received word that a windstorm had destroyed the house where his children were celebrating a birthday. All of his children were killed. If that wasn't enough, Job himself was afflicted with painful boils that covered his entire body. His friends found him sitting in an ash heap, scraping his boils, and longing to die. His friends were unsympathetic and accused Job of bringing God's judgment upon himself by some terrible sin that he must have committed.

1. Which book of the Bible (KJV) mentions the word "thanksgiving" the most times, at eight? G e n e s i s , Ne h e m i a h , Psalms, Isaiah 2. From Leviticus 22, a sacrifice of thanksgiving is most meaningful when it is ...? Sincere, Often, At your own will, Extravagant 3. What items of food

Even his wife gave him no comfort. She urged him to "curse God and die." The Bible says, "In all of this Job sinned not nor charged God foolishly." (Job 1:22) Consider these lessons from Job. GOD IS NOT THE AUTHOR OF EVIL! Perhaps you have heard someone say, "God will not put more on you than you can handle." "God took her." If you think about these expressions, it is really accusing God of evil. In the Bible, the book of Job reveals that Satan is the author of evil and the instigator of suffering. (Job 1:17-19; 2:3-8) Many times God allows trials to come into our lives to enable our faith to be strengthened and grow. God always works things out for our good. He does not bring any temptation or evil on His children. (John 10:10; Romans 8:28; James 1:12-13) IT IS IN AND THROUGH SUFFERING AND TRIALS THAT GOD GIVES THE GREATEST REVELATIONS OF HIMSELF! In

Job's suffering and trials, some of the greatest, prophetic revelations of the coming Redeemer — Messiah were given. "For I know that my Redeemer lives and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth." Job was also given a revelation of the bodily resurrection of the saints of God. "And though after my skin worms destroy this body; yet in my flesh shall I see God." (Job 19:25-27) If you are going through trials and tribulations, take heart — God has a new revelation of His glory awaiting you. His grace will see you through. (II Corinthians 12:9; Job 23:10) LIFE ON EARTH IS A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT! Life on earth is brief — temporary — transient! "For we were born but yesterday . . . our days on earth are a transient as a shadow." (Job 8:9) We won't be here long! So don't get too attached to this earth or the things of earth. Live with eternity in view! JOB LEARNED TO REJOICE ALWAYS! When Job received the news of his tragic losses, he worshipped and blessed God. (Job 1:20-21) The apostle Paul told us to "Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say, Rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4) We are not told to rejoice

in evil, but to rejoice in the Lord! Rejoicing puts your focus and faith on God. JOB SUFFERED MUCH BUT HE RECEIVED TWICE AS MUCH BACK WHEN HE PRAYED FOR HIS FRIENDS! His friends were unsympathetic and falsely accused him. But the book of Job closes by telling us, "And the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends; also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before." (Job 42:10; Matthew 5:43-45) JOB WAS A FRIEND OF GOD! (Job 1:8) One who is a friend of God is never poor, but rich indeed. (Proverbs 3:32; John 15:14-15) JOB HAD A REDEEMER! (Job 19:25) We need a Redeemer. Christ died on the cross for our sins and arose victorious! The name "Job" (Iyyob in Hebrew) relates to an Arabic word meaning "repent." It signifies "one who turns back to God." Like Job, you can have a "Redeemer" when you repent of sin and turn to God through Jesus Christ. "That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was American science-fiction writer Hal Clement who made the following sage observation: "Speculation is perfectly all right, but if you stay there you've only founded a superstition. If you test it, you've started a science." • Americans have more debt from student loans than credit cards and car loans combined.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep those sharp Sheep eyes focused on a hazy situation. As things begin to clear up, you’ll find a sharper picture emerging, showing something you will need to know. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Watch your expenses through the end of the month. Later, you’ll be glad to have extra money to pay for something that will make an acquisitive Bovine’s heart beat faster. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re now ready to make that oft-deferred commitment, if you still believe it’s what you want. Don’t be afraid to change your mind if you feel you should go in another direction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Now that you are moving on with your life after that recent disappointment, how about reactivating your travel plans and taking someone special along with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Many new friends come into your personal life, which suits all of you social Lions just fine. However, one new friend might make demands that you could find difficult to deal with. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Communication doesn’t exist unless it’s two-way. So if you’re getting no replies to the signals you’re sending, it could be time to look for someone more receptive. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A workplace complication that you

thought was ironed out develops new wrinkles that need attention. Meanwhile, expect continuing improvement in your home life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A tense personal problem needs to be talked out before someone decides to walk out. Resist making decisions until full explanations are offered from both sides. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A technological glitch that caused problems recently will soon be repaired, and life can return to normal. A colleague has a surprising message to deliver. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your partner might feel that you haven’t been as open with him or her as you should be. Deal with this now, before it turns into something more difficult to handle. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Good news: Many of the stumbling blocks that affected the progress of some of your career projects are fading away. Things also start to look up on the home front. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’ll need that strong Piscean pluck to get through waters that will be turbulent for a while. A more positive aspect soon emerges, along with some welcome news. BORN THIS WEEK: You are zealous in the pursuit of truth. You would make an excellent research scientist.. • For centuries, the month of June has been the most popular choice for weddings. One of the purported reasons was that some hundreds of years ago, this time was just after May's annual bath, so the happy couple and the guests were about as clean as could be hoped. • It is the policy of the United States government to never insure federal

buildings. The rationale? With such vast holdings, it's best for the government to assume its own risks. • As Thanksgiving approaches, you might want to add to your vocabulary. In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, there is a term to describe the feeling of being full but unable to stop eating due to the deliciousness of the meal: "Shemomedjamo" means, literally, "I accidentally ate the whole thing." • You've probably heard that classical Greek philosopher Socrates died after drinking hemlock, carrying out the death sentence imposed on him

for impiety and for corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens. You might not realize, though, that the poison is not derived from the hemlock tree, but from a flowering plant known as poison hemlock, a relative of the carrot. • Oysters and worms, although unable to see images, are able to sense dark and light. *** Thought for the Day: "The door of a bigoted mind opens outwards so that the only result of the pressure of facts upon it is to close it more snugly." — Ogden Nash © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
