GIRL SCOUT TROOP 8653 COAT AND BLANKET DONATIONS Girl Scout Troop #8653 recently had a 50's Sock Hop. They had fun doing the twist, hula hooping, and a bubble gum blowing contest. The girls also collected likenew winter coats and blankets to donate to those in need, ending up with an amazing collection of 34 coats of various sizes and 26 blankets. The group gave the coats to the residents of the United Methodist Children's Home. Then they donated the blankets to Angels on Assignment who provide those in need with food, clothing, and warming materials during the winter months. The troop saw the importance of giving back to those in need during the winter months. 50's Sock Hop - (L to R) front row: Lainey Mulch, Remi Alton, Kadence Wilson, Jaycie Bagby, Sydney Fenton, Allie B oone, Elizabeth Smith; back row: Paige Powers, Paislee Connaway, Autumn Bain, Hannah Bancroft, Adriana Williams, Ella Kroeshen, Allie Sweeten, Ava Derry. GIRL SCOUTS OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS ANNOUNCES NEW CEO

YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) is pleased to announce that Sarah Durbin has been hired as its Chief Executive Officer. Durbin from Edwardsville has extensive background in strategic planning, financial management, business and organizational development and fundraising. Prior to serving as GSSI CEO, Sarah was the Executive Director for Statewide Independent Living Council of Illinois. “I am honored to have been chosen as the new CEO for Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, said Sarah. “Coming from a family of Girl Scouts, I have always been drawn to the Girl Scouts’ unwavering commitment to empowering all girls. Girl Scouts has played an integral role in shaping the woman I am today and has given me the passion and values to use my skills and experience to lead GSSI in a way that provides all girls throughout our council opportunities to lead and achieve success whatever the topic or the way they choose to learn and explore. GSSI belongs to all of us regardless of where we live within the council or how we choose to participate and I am so excited to play a role in positively influencing our girls who will be tomorrow’s leaders, Sarah added.

The YouthBuild program of Marion and Jefferson Counties is currently taking applications for youth between the ages of 17 and 24 years old who need their high school equivalency (HSE) diploma. Applications can be submitted from now until Dec. 28 for classes that will start in January. Interviews will be conducted in Mt. Vernon between Thursday, Dec. 15 and Monday, Dec. 19. Both the Centralia and Mt. Vernon locations will have “walk-in interview days between Dec. 20 and Dec. 22. “This program is for any young adult who has dropped out of high school and has trouble getting and keeping a job. We will work with these individuals for nine months to help them study for their HSE or GED test and teach them work skills, so they can provide for themselves and their families, says Ryan Alton, Yout h Bu i ld Pro g r am Manager. YouthBuild is a program of the United Methodist Children’s Home, and is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Labor. This program helps young adults in our own community, living in a lower-income household and without a high school education, be able to earn a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, learn valuable work skills, and place them in jobs to earn money. When you think things can't get any crazier, they do. I guess real news didn't meet the liberal media's definition of sensationalism, so what did the New York Times, Washington Post and Meet the Press do? They made it up. The New York Times and Washington Post ran stories on Russian involvement in the election of Donald Trump with unnamed sources and reports called "inconclusive" after the FBI said it didn't happen. They also said the Republican National Committee (RNC) was hacked. Another untruth that didn't happen according to the FBI. And on Meet The Press Sunday morning Chuck Todd went after RNC Chairman Reince Priebus after Priebus told Todd the RNC was not hacked into. Folks, it got ugly for a good 15 minutes. I personally felt Todd's performance was less than professional, and Priebus, the future Chief of Staff for Donald Trump handled himself with great restraint. I was impressed. Unfortunately, this story that appeared across the liberal media network on Russia being involved in the recent election and hacking was based on false narratives. That's not news. So at this point the con-

gressional democrats are calling for a hearing, and Obama wants a full investigation! But keep in mind, according to Michael McFaul, former ambassador to Russia under the Obama administration, Hillary Clinton got involved in the Russian elections because of Putin. Maybe the New Yo r k T i m e s a n d Washington Post should check that one out! So where is this one going? Nowhere! Just like Jill Stein's recount! On to possible breaking news. It was rumored over the weekend that Donald Trump is close to naming the Secretary of State. The name that is c om i ng up is R e x Tillerson. Who is Mr. Tillerson? He is the CEO of probably the largest company in the world, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and has made massive deals all over the world. Mr. Trump called him "a world class player." The S e c re t a r y of St at e Department deals with 150 countries. Mr. Tillison deals with 200 countries and more employees than the State Department. And along with Secretary of State, the position of Deputy Secretary is allegedly going to John Bolton. What I find interesting is even though these are

simple rumors and it's not a done deal, the Washington democrats are already gearing up to fight the confirmations. And last, but not least, President-elect Donald Trump attended the Army / Navy football game Saturday, the first president-elect to attend the game. Trump must have brought Army luck; they won for the first time in 15 years, 21 – 17, against Nav y. This popular game has been a tradition since 1890. I watched the game even though I don't like football. Neither did my mother, but this is one she said more than once: "Cathy, you gotta root for Army." As if I didn't know Daddy was Army all the way! Mom, I'm sure, was cheering from Heaven, God rest her precious soul. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Put Your Money in the Bank In the halcyon days of the 1970s and '80s, a car company then-called Datsun used to saturate the airwaves during televised sporting events. Famous for its sporty "Z" cars (the 240Z, 260Z and 280ZX), Datsun extolled the gas-saving virtues of its brand, cheerfully urging would-be drivers to "put your money in the bank, not in the tank." That admonition would work well in today's world of boxing, too. Last year saw the passing of the "Greatest of All Time" (GOAT) and the continued win streak of "The Best Ever" (TBE). While Muhammad Ali can no longer reap the dividends from his illustrious career, Floyd "Money" Mayweather is still in fighting shape at 39 years of age, and he is in possession of what is really the sole marketing gimmick left in professional boxing — an unbeaten record of 49-0. If you were a betting man, you would think that an ego-driven boxer who

record would be more like 100-3 (factor in that MMA fighters use more of their body to strike, and the sheer overall violence). With the loss of Rhonda Rousey, he is the most visible and popular champion in the fight game. Also, he is game to fight Mayweather. Let's face it, Mayweather has nobody to face who would command the nine-figure payout he is demanding. Nobody is going to fall for another pay-per-view disaster like MayweatherPacquio II. A fight against McGregor would more than live up to the hype, if only to showcase the merits of boxing as a fighting style as it continues to lose mindshare to MMA. Also, it would be an easy fight for Mayweather. Vegas oddsmakers already have the fight at -2250/+980 in favor of Mayweather (meaning you'd have to wager $2,250 on Mayweather to win $100, $100 on McGregor to win $980), but you don't need to be an expert to call this one. Keep your money in the bank — McGregor won't tank, but Mayweather has plenty of gas left in his. It would be the greatest upset in sports history and certainly worth watching ... that much you can bet. Let's get it on.

has never really been challenged or hit hard more than once outside of the "Sugar" Shane Mosley fight, would like the alltime unbeaten boxing record all to himself. He's tied with Rocky Marciano, but your bettor's hunch just may prove to be correct: Mayweather himself has trademarked the term "TBE 50-0." So conditions appear to right. Mayweather is the greatest defensive boxer who ever lived. I've watched thousands of fights, and I have never seen anyone protect himself any better. Ali was harder to hit, and he moved around the ring better, but Mayweather's ability to fend off blows like a horse flicking off flies with his tail is unmatched across any era. The problem is that his style is epically boring, and as boxing continues to look for its next ratings savior, he's not helping. CHRISTMAS EVE DECEMBER 24 • 6:00 P.M.

The God of Second Chances My wife loves Mickey Mouse memorabilia. One Christmas I gave her a Mickey Mouse cookie jar. It’s a red car with Mickey and Minnie Mouse sitting together on the lid of the car shaped cookie jar. We’ve had it for several years and keep a stash of candy in it for the grandkids. A few years ago our oldest granddaughter accidentally dropped the lid and it broke into several pieces. My wife was brokenhearted. I swept it up and threw it into the trash and told my wife that I would get her another one. A few days later I came home and was greatly surprised – sitting on the kitchen counter was the Mickey Mouse cookie jar looking almost as good as new. What I threw away as broken and lost, my wife rescued out of the trash and glued it back together. There are a couple of small scars visible but Mickey and Minnie are back riding in the car side by side as good as new. Every time I see that Mickey Mouse cookie jar I’m reminded that God is the God of second chances. He doesn’t throw broken and shat-

Merry Christmas!

1. Is the book of Titus in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. What does Hebrews 9 say it will do when Christ appears for a second time? Awake the Heavens, Start anew, Save those who look for Him, Cease all evil 3. Where is the Codex Sinaiticus, the oldest com-

tered people away. God specializes in mending shattered lives. His mercy is everlasting. Psalm 136 is a unique chapter in the Bible. Each of the 26 verses ends with the same exact expression, “For His mercy endures forever.” Why is this chapter so repetitive? God does not want us to miss this awesome truth concerning His character. This precise message is repeated 26 times in this chapter! God is the God of second chances. His mercy releases the power to mend broken and shattered lives. Moses killed a man, buried him, and ran into the wilderness. But God is the God of second chances. He met Moses at the burning bush and called him to lead Israel out of Egyptian slavery. (Exodus 1 – 3) David was a commander, a prophet, a psalmist, a king, and he was called “a man after God’s own heart.” But David had sinned big time. He committed

Wednesday, December 14, 2016

adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed. (II Samuel 11-12) David repented and God forgave and restored him. Psalm 51 is his humble prayer of repentance. "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10) Peter was a passionate follower of Jesus. When Jesus was arrested and put on trial, Peter followed at a distance. In the courtyard a little maiden and bystanders accused Peter of being a follower of Jesus. Peter denied Jesus with an oath – three times! But Peter wept with tears of repentance. The resurrected living Christ met Peter on the sea shore, restored him, and commissioned h i m t o m i n i s t r y. (Matthew 26:69-75; John 21:15-19) Jesus gave us the parable of the prodigal son to teach us about the heart of God. A son demanded his inheritance, took it, and went into the big city where he wasted it with riotous living. He ended up in a pig pen fe e d i ng s w i ne. He decided to go home. His father saw him, ran to him, welcomed him home, and called for a celebration. The father represents the God of the

second chance for all who will repent of sin and return home to his embrace of mercy and grace. (Luke 15:11-32) Paul and Barnabas took young John Mark on their missionary journey. For some reason John Mark returned home. Paul refused to use him again. But Barnabas gave him a second chance. Jesus taught, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:6). I threw the broken Mickey Mouse cookie jar in the trash but my wife retrieved it and glued it back together. Has your marriage, your life, a relationship, or ministry been broken and shattered? Look to Jesus. God is the God of second chances and you are more valuable to Him than anything in the world. “Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever” (Psalm 136:25 NKJV). Do you need mercy and grace from the God of second chances? "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

by Samantha Weaver • It was noted American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller who gave the following sage advice: "Don't be seduced into thinking that that which does not make a profit is without value." • In the early 20th century, celebrated racehorse Man o' War won 20 of his 21 career races. Interestingly, his one loss (often attributed to a ter-

rible start and the extra weight he was carrying) was to a horse named Upset. • Statistically speaking, you probably live within 320 miles of the place you were born. • Have you ever experienced a social situation in which you have to introduce someone, but you can't quite remember their name? In Scotland,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make your holiday preparations one step at a time in order to avoid being overwhelmed and leaving things undone. That confusing family situation continues to work itself out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Ease this year’s holiday money pressures by letting your thrifty side guide you as you look for those perfect gift s that typically reflect your good taste and love of beauty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family members, friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to help out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holiday scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your checks. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A changing situation brings conflicting advice about how to go forward with your holiday plans. Your best bet: Make the decision you feel most comfortable with. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans get back on track after some confusion about the direction

there's a word to describe the hesitation caused by that moment of panic: a tartle. • According to a poll conducted by outdoor recreation retailer Gander Mountain, almost half of all hunters have some kind of ritual they observe to increase their chances for a lucky hunt. Some hunters go the entire season without shaving, some start each hunt at a particular time, some kiss the first bullet, some do an "anti-rain" dance — the variations are endless. • Getting married soon, but working with a tight budget? If you're considering cutbacks, you might

you expected to take. A potentially troublesome money matter needs your immediate attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your holiday preparations are on track. But you need to confront a personal situation while you can still keep it from overwhelming everything else. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Tight financial matters ease a bit during this holiday season. But the sagacious Sagittarian is welladvised to keep a tight hold on the reins while shopping for gifts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t put off making decisions about this year’s holiday celebrations, despite the negative comments you’ve been getting from several quarters. Do it NOW! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The holidays will bring new friends and new opportunities. Meanwhile, be careful to use your energy wisely as you go about making holiday preparations. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s good news coming from a most unlikely source. And it could turn out to be one of the best holiday gifts you have had in years. Remember to stay positive. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and loyalty. You make friends slowly -- but with rare exceptions, they’re in your life forever. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Researchers have found that couples who go on a honeymoon tend to have longer-lasting marriages than those who skip the trip — no matter how much or how little you spend. *** Thought for the Day: " If I seem to take part in politics, it is only because politics encircles us today like the coil of a snake from which one cannot get out, no matter how much one tries.
