AMERICAN LEGION COAT DRIVE The American Legion donated 95 adult and children's coats, plus $800 for their annual coat drive was donated. American Legion Post 446 Commander Frank McKnight talked about the coat drive. He said that as adults we look back on how we had things, and went on to say he would like to give back. He was hopeful that in next year's drive they will receive 100 coats. McKnight said with great emotion his mission is to hit the program's five county wide goal of 440 children's coats. Coats will be given to the kids at Head Start and if those children have older brothers and sisters, coats will also be given to them. On Dec. 20 there will be a Christmas dinner where parents will be able to find a coat. Afterwards, the remaining adult coats will be taken to the clothing pantry. It's not every day that a business donates over $15,000 to local organizations to help those in need, whether human or furry babies. Not so in the case of Centralia Borowiak's IGA. Manager Phyllis Bechtel and Owner Trevor Borowiak are always lending a helping hand; where there's a need you'll generally find them. Last week was no exception. On Tuesday IGA Manager Phyllis Bechtel and her employees loaded up trucks an IGA van full of food to go to the Salvation Army in Central City. On Wednesday the generosity continued when the

Centralia Humane Society's House of Hope Animal Shelter and the Centralia Benevolent Association Food Pantry received huge donations. The Shelter got dog and cat food along with treats. The Food Pantry received food and paper goods, including diapers, facial tissue, soaps and more. Bechtel said, "This is the largest donation we've made at one time... in 24 hours, $15,000 worth of products." She also said, "We're happy to help in any way we can." The timing was perfect with supplies running low.

Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo

Those present for Wednesday's donation are pictured (L to R): Kim Abbott, Shelter Manager of the Centralia Animal Shelter; Phyllis Bechtel, Borowiak's Centralia IGA Store Manager; and Joe Dean, Centralia city worker from the Public Works Department. Also present but not pictured were Centralia Animal Control Officer Bobby Patton and Gayla Harting, the City of Centralia's Director of Community Development and Planning & Zoning Administrator.

This Is BIG!

When you think things can't get any crazier, they do. I guess real news didn't meet the liberal media's definition of sensationalism, so what did the New York Times, Washington Post and Meet the Press do? They made it up. The New York Times and Washington Post ran stories on Russian involvement in the election of Donald Trump with unnamed sources and reports called "inconclusive" after the FBI said it didn't happen. They also said the Republican National Committee (RNC) was hacked. Another untruth that didn't happen according to the FBI. And on Meet The Press Sunday morning Chuck Todd went after RNC Chairman Reince Priebus after Priebus told Todd the RNC was not hacked into. Folks, it got ugly for a good 15 minutes. I personally felt Todd's performance was less than professional, and Priebus, the future Chief of Staff for Donald Trump handled himself with great restraint. I was impressed. Unfortunately, this story that appeared across the liberal media network on Russia being involved in the recent election and hacking was based on false narratives. That's not news. So at this point the con-

gressional democrats are calling for a hearing, and Obama wants a full investigation! But keep in mind, according to Michael McFaul, former ambassador to Russia under the Obama administration, Hillary Clinton got involved in the Russian elections because of Putin. Maybe the New Yo r k T i m e s a n d Washington Post should check that one out! So where is this one going? Nowhere! Just like Jill Stein's recount! On to possible breaking news. It was rumored over the weekend that Donald Trump is close to naming the Secretary of State. The name that is c om i ng up is R e x Tillerson. Who is Mr. Tillerson? He is the CEO of probably the largest company in the world, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and has made massive deals all over the world. Mr. Trump called him "a world class player." The S e c re t a r y of St at e Department deals with 150 countries. Mr. Tillison deals with 200 countries and more employees than the State Department. And along with Secretary of State, the position of Deputy Secretary is allegedly going to John Bolton. What I find interesting is even though these are

simple rumors and it's not a done deal, the Washington democrats are already gearing up to fight the confirmations. And last, but not least, President-elect Donald Trump attended the Army / Navy football game Saturday, the first president-elect to attend the game. Trump must have brought Army luck; they won for the first time in 15 years, 21 – 17, against Nav y. This popular game has been a tradition since 1890. I watched the game even though I don't like football. Neither did my mother, but this is one she said more than once: "Cathy, you gotta root for Army." As if I didn't know Daddy was Army all the way! Mom, I'm sure, was cheering from Heaven, God rest her precious soul. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The God of Second Chances My wife loves Mickey Mouse memorabilia. One Christmas I gave her a Mickey Mouse cookie

jar. It’s a red car with Mickey and Minnie Mouse sitting together on the lid of the car shaped cookie jar. We’ve had it for several years and keep a stash of candy in it for

the grandkids. A few years ago our oldest granddaughter accidentally dropped the lid and it broke into several pieces. My wife was brokenhearted. I swept it up and threw it into the trash and told my wife that I would get her another one. A few days later I came home and was greatly surprised – sitting on the kitchen counter was the Mickey Mouse cookie jar looking almost as good as new. What I threw away as broken and lost, my wife rescued out of the trash and glued it back together. There are a couple of small scars visible but Mickey and Minnie are back riding in the car side by side as good as new. Every time I see that Mickey Mouse cookie jar I’m reminded that God is the God of second chances. He doesn’t throw broken and shattered people away. God specializes in mending shattered lives. His mercy is everlasting. Psalm 136 is a unique chapter in the Bible. Each of the 26 verses ends with the same exact expression, “For His mercy endures forever.” Why is this chapter so

repetitive? God does not want us to miss this awesome truth concerning His character. This precise message is repeated 26 times in this chapter! God is the God of second chances. His mercy releases the power to mend broken and shattered lives. Moses killed a man, buried him, and ran into the wilderness. But God is the God of second chances. He met Moses at the burning bush and called him to lead Israel out of Egyptian slavery. (Exodus 1 – 3) David was a commander, a prophet, a psalmist, a king, and he was called “a man after God’s own heart.” But David had sinned big time. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed. (II Samuel 11-12) David repented and God forgave and restored him. Psalm 51 is his humble prayer of repentance. "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10) Peter was a passionate follower of Jesus. When Jesus was arrested and put on trial, Peter

Wednesday, December 14, 2016 followed at a distance. In the courtyard a little maiden and bystanders accused Peter of being a follower of Jesus. Peter denied Jesus with an oath – three times! But Peter wept with tears of repentance. The resurrected living Christ met Peter on the sea shore, restored him, and commissioned him to ministry. (Matthew 26:69-75; John 21:1519) Jesus gave us the parable of the prodigal son to teach us about the heart of God. A son demanded his inheritance, took it, and went into the big city where he wasted it with riotous living. He ended up in a pig pen feeding swine. He decided to go home. His father saw him, ran to him, welcomed him home, and called for a celebration. The father represents the God of the second chance for all who will repent of sin and return home to his embrace of mercy and grace. (Luke 15:11-32) Paul and Barnabas took young John Mark on their missionary journey. For some

reason John Mark returned home. Paul refused to use him again. But Barnabas gave him a second chance. Jesus taught, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:6). I threw the broken Mickey Mouse cookie jar in the trash but my wife retrieved it and glued it back together. Has your marriage, your life, a relationship, or ministry been broken and shattered? Look to Jesus. God is the God of second chances and you are more valuable to Him than anything in the world. “Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever” (Psalm 136:25 NKJV). Do you need mercy and grace from the God of second chances? "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (I John 1:9) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another. –Charles Dickens

A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.

Tales of Feral Cats DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to add to your recent columns about feral cats. Maybe some can’t be tamed, but my friends and family would disagree. I recently visited with friends in North Carolina and met their beautiful cat, “Stormy.” Their story is this: They had been feeding this feral cat for some time outside, and of course, he wouldn’t come near them. Then one night they heard a howling outside. Looking out, they saw a mountain lion or panther, whatever they call them there, threatening Stormy. They opened the door, and Stormy came in, and never went outside again.

Another story I have is of a feral cat that was “adopted” by my son’s chickens! He has six chickens in his backyard in Florida, and one day someone dropped off a very young kitten. He got into the coop, but instead of running or attacking, the kitten assumed those chickens were his parents! Now a full-grown cat, he remains mostly feral and won’t come inside my son’s house, but he hangs out in the chicken coop daily with his new family. Hope your readers enjoy the stories! — John S., via email DEAR JOHN: What amazing stories! I’m glad both cats found loving homes and new families. Thank you for sharing them. It’s rare for feral cats to be coaxed inside and become fully domesticated cats that are comfortable around humans. But for those that do find a home

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make your holiday preparations one step at a time in order to avoid being overwhelmed and leaving things undone. That confusing family situation continues to work itself out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Ease this year’s holiday money pressures by letting your thrifty side guide you as you look for those perfect gift s that typically reflect your good taste and love of beauty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family members, friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to help out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holiday scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your checks. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A changing situation brings conflicting advice about how to go forward with your holiday plans. Your best bet: Make the decision you feel most comfortable with. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans get back on track after some confusion about the direction

WINDOWS AND SIDING Locally Owned & Operated since 1988

you expected to take. A potentially troublesome money matter needs your immediate attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your holiday preparations are on track. But you need to confront a personal situation while you can still keep it from overwhelming everything else. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Tight financial matters ease a bit during this holiday season. But the sagacious Sagittarian is welladvised to keep a tight hold on the reins while shopping for gifts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t put off making decisions about this year’s holiday celebrations, despite the negative comments you’ve been getting from several quarters. Do it NOW! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The holidays will bring new friends and new opportunities. Meanwhile, be careful to use your energy wisely as you go about making holiday preparations. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s good news coming from a most unlikely source. And it could turn out to be one of the best holiday gifts you have had in years. Remember to stay positive. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and loyalty. You make friends slowly -- but with rare exceptions, they’re in your life forever. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I have a Coca-Cola tray from 1924 entitled "Touring Car," which I believe is worth in the $500$750 range. Stamped on the back is information that it was manufactured by the Ohio Art Company under license from the Coca-Cola Company. Where can I sell it? — Frances, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Your tray is not an original, but rather a reproduction from 1988. It was sold in a set of four: "Touring Car," "Village Blacksmith," "Sea Captain" and "1908 Calendar Girl." A reproduction is worth much less than an original item. I I found the set of four Coca-Cola trays on eBay sealed and in factory packaging for $75. I also found a single "Touring Car" tray offered for $11 at the same site. One of the better reference books is "Petretti's Soda Pop Collectibles and Price Guide" by Allan Pe-

tretti and published by Krause Books. *** Q: I have a Mary Hartline doll that I played with during the early 1950s. It is the Mary Hartline majorette doll, but the one I have is missing its baton. I would like to know its current value. — Rita, Monroe, North Carolina A: Mary Hartline was born Oct. 19, 1926, in Hillsboro, Illinois. She eventually became a fashion model. In 1949, Hartline was hired to appear in the network TV show "Super Circus." It was a big hit. During the 1950s she became the inspiration for a series of games and toys, including dolls. Your majorette doll would be worth about $75 IF it had its baton and was in reasonable condition. *** Q: I have a Mighty Mouse cereal bowl that I used as a child during the 1970s. What can you tell me about it? — Ken, Beaumont, Texas

A: Mighty Mouse was the rodent equivalent of Superman. He was created by Paul Terry and was one of the best-known Terrytoon characters. He made his first appearance in 1942 as Supermouse, and was renamed Mighty Mouse in 1944. According to the "Official Hake's Price Guide of Character Toys" by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles, your cereal bowl was made in 1977 by Deka Plastic, Inc., and is valued in the $10-$35 range.
