innings each season, but why should that influence your vote for a closer? Let's say you're a seasonticket holder. You get to see your best starter maybe 15 times each year. Your closer? You see him whenever you're about to win -- they're the ones who kept you in the seats, which not only justifies their salary (a team can't make money off of concessions when you're gone, after all), it justifies their importance. Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith, closers unfairly subjected to this closer discrimination, would appear in 70-80 games a season. They were like a warm, 98-mph hug. Think of it like your wife or husband, kids or partner, best mate, what have you. Would you rather see them 15 times a year for two hours a pop, or would you rather see them in 80 electrifying, 20-minute appearances over an extended period of time (five extra years if you're a lefty)? You already know the answer, and that's why you know it's time to open up the gates of the Hall for the overlooked men who spent their career awaiting a call, closing the door on their opponents. Make the call to the pen ... your pen. The closer's time has come.

Closing Time Every year, you are given a task. That task is a vote. While some would say the task is an easy one, you know better. For your Hall of Fame vote is all that stands between the chasm that divides the words "mediocre" and "legend." Some envy you. You are the baseball writers of America. You possess a talent, an ability that can elevate the mundane to the miraculous. But others despise you. When their heroes are overlooked, when their favorite players whom they watched 162 days and nights each year are deemed to be second rate, it seems to be an arrogant dismissal of what they and most everyone values the most: their time. Time was when a relief pitcher was considered somebody who couldn't cut the mustard and make the starting rotation. Of course, there also was a time when starting rotations consisted of two starters who had 30 complete games every few months and were allowed

to openly spit on the baseballs. Those days are over, thankfully, and it's time for us to evolve further by appreciating the closer role in baseball. Many of you argue that the closer is a cop-out, a ploy managers use to save their skin more than they save games. After all, there's not much to think about when you're in the lead by one to three runs in the ninth and you have a multi-zillion dollar pitcher anxiously awaiting your call to the bullpen. Maybe the modern-day closer deserves some scorn. Statistics show that teams with a lead in the ninth inning almost always win, anyway. People really into statistics have concluded that a topshelf reliever maybe wins an additional four games for a team. Aha! Right there, that should make the case. They're worth it because a win is a win. Many a team has lost the division by four games. But there's more to it Mark Vasto is a veteran than that. SOUTH CENTRAL TRANSIT RECEIVED 1ST QUARTER PAYMENT FROM THE STATE South Central Transit (SCT) is ecstatic to announce that the first quarter payment from the State of Illinois was received on December 8. SCT will be able to continue services for two to three more months and there will not be any lay-off of employees. The state makes operating assistance payments to downstate public transportation systems on a quarterly basis through the Downstate Public Transportation Fund, which is funded through transfers from the General Revenue Fund. transportation began fiscal year 2017 on July 1. Per state statute (30 ILCS 740), Illinois provides 65% reimbursement of operating expenses for South Central Transit and other downstate Illinois public transportation systems. Per state statute, Illinois is legally bound to provide this funding as a continuing appropriation whether the legislature appropriates sufficient funds or not. However, there had not been any funds transferred to the Downstate Public Transportation Fund until a few days ago.

There has not been any talk or announcements made of when the second quarter payments may be received. A recent SCT press release said, "We so much appreciate those who have taken the time to call our State Leaders to let them know how important public transportation is to southern Illinois. Your support has made a huge difference. Thank you!!! Let’s keep reminding them of the importance of public transportation so they don’t forget."

Dear Editor, What would it be like to have a president who puts America first, believes in national sovereignty and the constitution? A president who believes in the rule of law, supports police officers and does not make any decisions based on politics. A president who respects our military and our flag and everything for which it stands.

A president who is a leader, means what he says he will do and does it. A president who appoints justices and judges who interpret the law of the land and do not make laws based on personal or political ideology.

AMERICAN LEGION MEMBERS PRESENT CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO AREA VETERANS

GIRL SCOUT TROOP 8713 WINTER WARM UP

Me m b e r s o f t h e Centralia American Legion Post 446 and Sons of the American Legion gathered at Centralia Manor last Wednesday to present gifts to veterans residing there and thank them for their service. The gifts are provided through Gifts to the Yanks that Gave, a program that was instituted in 1944 to remember hospitalized War veterans. Every year American Legion members visit area nursing homes in October to offer veterans a choice of four gifts: a jogging suit, a jacket, a blanket, or a gift bag. Legion members order the chosen gifts and deliver them to the veterans before Christmas. The gifts are funded at the organization's state level. At the local level, the American Legion also give veterans a pair of gloves and a Christmas card containing $5. Veterans honored at Centralia Manor were: Walter Moore, Bobby White, Richard Rich, Lee Bergfeld, Richard Baldwin, Mary Wiley, Darrell Holzhauer, Micky Dagley, Henry Parks and Wayne Hails. On hand for the gift pres ent at ions were Centralia American Legion Commander Frank McKnight; Centralia American Legion member Mike Stachowski, coordinator of the Gifts to the Yanks Program; and Sons of the American Legion Finance Of f icer Tom E l lis. Veterans pictured here are Bobby White, Richard Rich, Darrell Holzhauer, and Mary Wiley.

Troop 8713 brought many winter wear items and blankets to the West Salem Trinity United Methodist Church. These items were collected and donated to their Kids Outreach Program. They will benefit children in the Mt. Vernon area that are in need of such items. CONTINUE THE LEGACY

Darrell Holzhauer

Help continue the legacy. Throughout Kevin Koenegstein's life he was a committed, regular donor and supporter of the American Red Cross and their blood drives. The importance of donating blood was ingrained in Kevin at an early age by h i s f a t h e r, D a v i d Koenegstein, who formerly owned M&K Insurance in Salem and later sold the company to his son and his

wife. Unfortunately, Kevin Koenegstein lost his life earlier this year in a tragic motorcycle accident. Just before his death Kevin had donated ten gallons of lifesaving blood. So in order to continue Kevin's legacy, there will be a blood drive held in his honor at the Salem Community Activity Center on Wednesday, December 21 from noon to 6:00 p.m. Plan now to give blood in Kevin's name.

The Master Gardener program is open to any adult (age 19 or older). Everyone has someone on their list that is hard to buy for (or maybe it’s you).

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

The Greatest Jeopardy Question One of the most famous and long-lasting television game shows is “Jeopardy. When the game host gives the answer, the contestant must answer with a question. The word “jeopardy means, “exposure to death, loss, or injury. Some synonyms of jeopardy are “peril, hazard, risk, and danger. After the fall of Adam and Eve, the world was in extreme jeopardy and shrouded in darkness. Isaiah prophesied of a great light that would arise. “By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined. (Isaiah 9:1-2) Who is this great light? Isaiah gives us stunning clues to who this great light is, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given . . . And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will

be no end . . . Upon the throne of David. (Isaiah 9:6-7) Isaiah prophesied of a child to be born and a Son to be given. He prophesied that this Son would be born of a virgin, be called mighty God, and would rule on the throne of David. Micah prophesied that this Son would be born in Bethlehem and, “Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting (Micah 5:2) Two gospels describe the nativity. The greatest jeopardy question is, “A child, born in Bethlehem, fulfilled all the prophesies of the great light that shines in the darkness of the world. If you answer, “Who is Jesus Christ, the Son of God? You would be correct. The gospel of John gives us a unique revelation regarding Jesus’ birth. Jesus did not come into being at his birth, because He existed with the Father from the beginning. Read John chapter 1 and discover the stunning glorious revelation of who Jesus is. JESUS IS GOD. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) The prophets and gospel

5

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

writers make the deity of Jesus Christ very clear. The scriptures reveal that Jesus the eternal Word was with the Father from the very beginning. He is God! Gloria Dios. JESUS IS THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS. “All things were made through him. ( John 1:2-3) What wonder, that the creator of all things would take upon him human flesh and be born in a stable, and laid in a manger. John adds, “And without Him nothing was made that was made. Think how great and glorious this baby lying in a manger was. JESUS IS THE GREAT LIGHT THAT PROPHETS PROCLAIMED WOULD BE THE LIGHT O F T H E WO R L D. Christmas lights remind us of that. “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:4-9) JESUS IS THE AUTHOR OF ETERNAL LIFE. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe on His name. (John 1:12-13) Jesus came to be the Savior of the world. His name means “God is salvation. The key word in the gospels is “Believe. Have you believed on His name? JESUS IS GOD IN THE FLESH. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14-16) Someone described Jesus as God with skin on. The

book of Philippians des c r i b e s h ow Je s u s humbled himself. (Philippians 2:5-11) JESUS IS THE LAMB OF GOD. John the Baptist introduced Jesus. “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) Ever y morning and evening a lamb was sacrificed in the temple for the sins of the people. Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah, God’s servant, would be led to slaughter like a lamb, to pay the penalty for sin. Without this perfect sacrifice, there would be no Christmas. The greatest jeopardy question that all must answer is, “Who is Jesus to you? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

• Create your own "on this day in history" calendar, just for your family. Purchase a large wall calendar each year dedicated to memories. Start with just listing birthdays. Then you can document things that happen throughout the year. Maybe someone bought a new car, or lost a tooth. Write down visitors to your home and vacations. Then at the end of the year, transfer them to a new calendar, noting what year something happened. As the years progress, you'll have a wonderful reminiscing calendar! • When you're shopping, remember to do the math. Bigger isn't always a better deal in terms of cost per unit. Make sure by dividing the price by unit (ounces, pounds or pieces) to see how much you are paying. Sometimes, the bulk size represents a significant saving, but other times, it's

MORE expensive. • "I keep my decorations organized using recycled household materials. I save tissue boxes to hold garland, and I wrap stringed lights around the core of a paper towel roll. Clean styrofoam takeout containers can hold ornaments, and material items, like tree skirts, stay folded but unmusty when kept in a net bag." — H.R. in Washington • "If your suitcase is just plain black — and it seems like they all are — make it stand out at baggage claim. I put a bumper sticker from a band I like on mine. My cousins use yarn pompoms. My kids like the patterned duct tape you can buy. Personalize, and it's easy to spot yours." — M.M. in Florida Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

By Larry Cox Commodore Computer Q: I bought a Commodore Plus/4 computer about 30 years ago. I never learned to use it. In fact, it is in its original box. I would like to find out what it is worth. — Alec, Spicer, Minnesota A: I would hold on to your computer for a few more years since early computers and computer games are beginning to attract the attention of collectors. That means current prices are sure to increase. Your Commodore Plus/4 system was one of the first home computers, and the fact that it is in its original packaging makes it espe-

cially attractive. I found several Plus/4 computers available for sale, all priced in the $75-$150 range. One was in its original box with power adapter and built-in programs on ROM. It was priced at $95. *** Q: I have an oil painting done by Touis Ponsen. Do you know anything about this painter and where I might sell this picture? — Darlene, Calico Rock, Arkansas A: I think you may have copied the name wrong. Even though I can't find any information on a Touis Ponsen, I did find a short biography of Tunis Ponsen,

who was born in the Netherlands in 1891 and immigrated to the United States in about 1914. He was a painter and settled in Western Michigan. Ponsen was known for his landscapes and treatment of light. I can't help you find a buyer for your painting. However, I suggest you contact art dealers in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Little Rock. *** Q: My late uncle was a golfer, and he often haunted thrift shops searching for sheet music featuring golf themes. The earliest sheet seems to be "With Your Plus

Fours On" from 1923. — Bill, Davenport, Iowa A: The piece of music you listed in your letter is valued in the $75-$100 range. I found it documented in the "Official Price Guide to Golf Collectibles" by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles books. Golf memorabilia has become extremely popular in recent years, and prices have steadily risen accordingly. Of particular interest are pre-1950 golf clubs, tournament programs, medals, trophies and autographs. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. T

he liberal media last week was going over the newly picked Trump cabinet members, largely criticizing Rex Tillerson which I don't get. I can't think of anyone better for Secretary of State. He has relationships with over 200 leaders of countries all over the world, and yes, that includes Putin of Russia. Keep in mind you can be friendly without being friends. But what's important is in a recent survey. How do you view Trump's handling of the transition team? 50% approved with 41% disapproving and taking it one step further to the question of Russia's effect on the 2016 elections, 57% don't believe Russia had any impact and 37% did believe it had an effect. So with that said, John Podesta, former Clinton Campaign Chairman said, "Russia clearly intervened and effected the election." Well, if and I do say if the Russians hacked in which the FBI and CIA don't totally agree to the conclusions, this has all come through third parties, Hillary Clinton's puppets and the liberal media and let's not forget it's alleged it was through an error of John Podesta over personal emails that were hacked. The FBI did contact Mr. Podesta and give him the heads up there could be a problem, but never said Russia did it. However, in Podesta's own words, the last time he heard from the FBI was on October 9, 2016. Besides that, where's Comey? Again, everything we are hearing is through a third party. A prime example is Press Secretary Josh Earnest who said in a recent press conference that Trump knew of the Russian interference. There is absolutely, as I said last week, NO conclusive evidence for this kind of reporting from CNN (Clinton News Network) or from MSNBC or from Josh Earnest who should know better. In my opinion this is being done to discredit the election results.

Going one step further, if the Russians did hack into the Clinton Campaign Chairman's email, let's be clear, according to Carl Rove the CIA said again if (and that big word if ) Russia hacked it had nothing to do with getting Trump elected, it had to do with shaking the confidence of the American election and, folks, I certainly could believe that. This whole thing is all about delegitimizing this election. The spin job of the liberal media, the recounts, the Russians and now the electoral college. The bottom line is so appropriately said, SO LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT, THE DNC IS M A D AT R U S S I A BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY ARE TRYING TO MANIPUL ATE OUR ELECTION BY EXPOSING THAT THE DNC DID TRY TO MANIPULATE OUR ELECTION? ie. Bernie Sanders. The fact is, the only person who hasn't been blamed for Hillary Clinton losing the election IS HILLARY CLINTON! Maybe, just maybe, the Democrats need to look at just a few of the real reasons, like starting with: •The base they've lost. •The games the DNC played in trying to swing the election dishonestly from Donna Brazil to Debbie Wasserman Schultz. •Bill Clinton stepping off a plane to meet with Attorney General Loretta Lynch while Hillary was under investigation. •Hillary's loss of 33,000 emails. •Her complete and total arrogance. •Calling half the voters deplorable. •What happened in West Virginia and her comments about coal mining turning that blue state red. Should I go on? At some point, if the two party system is to survive, the Democrats are going to have to look at the real problems. On to Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense who has a ringside seat. To the question has there

been enough concern over t he a l l e ge d Russ i an hacking? His answer was a resounding NO. And if this really happened, I agree, but he went on to say he feels that Putin saw Obama's withdrawal from the world, the red lines that have been drawn and crossed, what Assad has gotten by with in Syria while Obama stood by and watched. Putin saw a void and is trying to fill it! He concluded, it was aimed at discrediting our elections because of Russia's own corrupt system and had no effect on Trump winning. On to the latest attempt to sway the electoral college. Clinton's latest attempt to overthrow the votes of half the country is calling for a delay in the electoral College vote until an investigation into the Russian hacking that the Clinton camp claim cost her the presidency. Another waste of time on an unnewsworthy story. It isn't going to happen. Tr u mp on Mon d ay, December 19th will be voted in by the Electoral College. At this time I'll close by saying it's time for the parties to come together and work together for the good of all. There's only one Unites States of America and room for all. We must have two parties to remain a democracy. One party is nothing more than a dictatorship which is no good for anyone in the long run. So let me close by wishing all of my Democratic friends and Republican friends a Very Merry Christmas and leave you with my Christmas wish: That we remain all together one nation under God. Merry Christmas to one and all! Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. K.C. ACE PLACE RECEIVES DONATION OF ART WORK The Kaskaskia College ACE (Academic Center for Excellence) has received a generous donation of artwork by Annelies Heijnen of Mt. Vernon. The artwork formerly was on display at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital but now will have a permanent home at Kaskaskia College. The Hospital Board chose to donate to the College in hopes that it would be displayed locally for the public’s appreciation and admiration for years to come. Kaskaskia College Dean of Arts and Sciences, Kellie Henegar says of the donation, “Kaskaskia College is thrilled to have Annelies Heijnen’s work on display in the ACE Place for the KC community to see.” Mrs. Heijnen was born and raised in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and has also resided in Sweden, England, Luxembourg and Ohio. Before coming to the United States, she studied ceramics and sculpture in Luxembourg at the “l'Ecole des Beaux Arts et Metiers”. After her arrival in the United States she attended art classes at Kent State University in Ohio as a special student under John

Gill from 1980 to 1984. Heijnen started her own studio in 1985, and has appeared in solo exhibitions and group shows in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Missouri and New York City. In 1988 she received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council and also the annual May Show Award for C eramics at the Cleveland Museum of Art. “I made this piece originally for St Mary’s Hospital and I am thrilled that they donated it to the Kaskaskia College”, said Heijnen. She adds that “Growing up on the Dutch coast, the ocean was as close to me as the streets we lived on and the woods we hiked. However, unlike the familiar and well-traveled streets and woods of our town, the ocean, and in particular, its inhabitants, were a source of wonder and curiosity. Indeed, what wild creatures lurked beneath the waves?” “Installing this fish sculpture in the children’s section of the library was perfect and exciting on so many levels” says Heijnen. “Like the books on the shelves, art is an incredible vehicle for communication,

OPERATION CHRISTMAS STOCKING STUFFERS exploration, and discovery. Art has the power to spark new ways of thinking and challenge how we see the world, and I believe this is especially true for children. These two earthenware, whimsical fish represent the wonder of childhood, and their puzzle-like construction alludes to the mysteries of earth, perhaps even human nature. So much to imagine! I hope everyone will enjoy experiencing the fish as much as I enjoyed making them”. FOOD SAFETY AT THE HOLIDAYS The holidays mean a time to enjoy celebrations and all sorts of delicious food that comes with this time of year. In all the excitement and business of cooking, eating, and sharing time with friends and family, C ait l i n Hut h , a University of Illinois Extension educator and registered dietitian has five steps to help prevent food-related illnesses this season. Wash hands. Huth says, “Start here. This is your number one way to reduce your risk of getting sick from food.” With soap and water, rub your palms together, between the fingers, under nails, on the backs of hands, and all around for 20 seconds before rinsing off the soap and germs. Thaw safely. From saved frozen cookie dough to whole turkeys and hams, no frozen foods should be thawed on your counters at room temperature. “The safest way to thaw is in the refrigerator,” Huth says. However, you can also start thawing foods in the microwave, but they need to be cooked the rest of the way after that. “Some foods, such as small steaks,” Huth notes, “can be cooked from frozen, but not something as large as a frozen turkey.” Begin the count-

down. Some holiday gathering hosts may leave appetizers, dips, cheese plates, and other fo o ds on a table, counter, or buffet line for anyone to eat. It may be the same for the main course – ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, pie, etc. Because many of these foods need refrigeration for safety, Huth explains that these foods can be at room temperature for up to 2 hours, and then they need to be put back into the fridge or tossed out. “Bacteria and other organisms are growing while you eat, talk, and spend time together.” Cool those leftovers. Any leftover foods need to go into cold storage after 2 hours of being at room temperature, or tossed out. Huth adds that foods that remain really hot need to be cooled quickly. Divide hot foods, like sweet potato casserole, into small containers and put into your refrigerator immediately after you are done eating. “Remember, your fridge needs space between foods so cold air can move around. Do not pile containers of hot foods on top of each other or pack your fridge full,” she says. Use up leftovers. There are two points here, Huth notes. First, use all leftover foods within 3 to 4 days, and then toss them out or

freeze them for longer storage. Second, reheat all leftovers to 165 degrees F. “If you do not have a food thermom-

eter, consider investing in one. Otherwise, look for soups and liquids to be boiling and for casseroles and other dishes

to be very hot, not just warm,” Huth says. “Food safety is important all times of the year, so keep your

awareness of these tips and others from foodsafety.gov. Eat and stay well this season,” Huth adds.

THE TWELVE SITES OF SOCIAL SECURITY BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

Gathering with family and friends during the holiday season reminds us we’re part of a strong community. And sometimes, in the spirit of the season, we break into song. Our take on “The Twelve Days of Christmas” — a holiday favorite since 1780 — highlights the national community we care for all year long. We call it “The Twelve Sites of Social Security.” For the first site of Social Security, we give to you: our home page, www. socialsecurity.gov. It’s the place to go for all things Social Security. Everything you could want — from online services and benefit screening tools to publications and frequently asked questions — you can find all these and more on this site. For the second site of Social Security, we give to you: our hub for Social Security news and updates at our blog, Social Secu-

rity Matters at blog.socialsecurity.gov. For the third site of Social Security, we give to you: an easy way to learn how to replace your Social Security card at www. socialsecurity.gov./ssnumber. And in some states, you can replace it online at www.socialsecurity.gov/ myaccount! For the fourth site of Social Security, we give to you: an online application for retirement benefits that you can complete and submit in as little as 15 minutes at www.social security.gov/applytoretire. For the fifth site of Social Security, we give to you: five estimates of your future Social Security benefits! Or as many estimates as you would like using different scenarios. Get instant, personalized estimates of your future benefits at www.socialsecurity. gov/estimator. For the sixth site of Social Security, we give to

you: a convenient way to apply for disability benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/ applyfordisability. For the seventh site of Social Security, we give to you: fun and informative videos on our YouTube channel at www.youtube. com/user/socialsecurityonline. For the eighth site of Social Security, we give to you: Extra Help with Medicare prescription drug plan costs. You can learn more and apply for a subsidy online at www. s o c i a l s e c u r i t y. g o v / prescriptionhelp. For the ninth site of Social Security, we give to you: our convenient publication library with online booklets and pamphlets on numerous subjects, at www.socialsecurity.gov/ pubs. Question: My wife and I live in Illinois, but plan to spend the winter in New Mexico. My wife will turn 62 while we are down south. Can she apply for benefits in New Mexico, or do we have to wait until we get back home to apply for retirement at our local Social Security office? Answer: These days, you don’t even have to be near a Social Security office to apply for benefits. Regard-

less of where you and your wife are living, you can apply for retirement benefits online at www. socialsecurity.gov/applytoretire. It’s so easy to do, and it can take as little as 15 minutes to complete and submit the application. If she prefers, your wife can file a retirement benefit application at any Social Security office — including the one closest to you in Illinois, New Mexico, or wherever you happen to be.

Here Are Some Holiday Tips • Having a holiday party? Put food and drinks in separate areas, as these are places that guests tend to linger. With different stops for each, guests will not bunch up in one place trying to do both, and it actually encourages mingling! • Dirty candles can be cleaned up quickly with a leg of pantyhose. Slip the candle in the hose, rub the outside of the candle and release. • Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box mix of cake on hand. Instead of

the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350°F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative. • Inexpensive gift idea: a cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday pick or spray. Place inside a gallon-size zippertop bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zippertop, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.

• “Wondering what wine to serve at your holiday party? Order a case of mixed wines. You might get a hit on your hands!” — C.C. in Oregon • Instead of going out and buying extra items to have on hand for guests, just borrow from your neighbors. Extra towels, place settings, silverware, kitchen appliances: It’s a pretty good bet that someone on your street has it for you to borrow. If you don’t know your neighbors well enough to ask, maybe

you should start planning a get-to-know-you party right now. • “Commit to spending one or two unscheduled nights per week during holiday break just hanging out with your kids. You can enjoy the toys they might have gotten for Christmas or Hanukkah, read, play games or just relax in each other’s company. They will return to school (and you to work) less stressed.” — E.G. in Massachusetts © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there's no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

• Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa's reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

Christmas traditions focus on several different aspects of family and spiritual life. While many stories are shared around Christmastime, perhaps none bears more significance than the origin of the Christmas celebration. Sharing the Christmas story is an integral part of holiday gatherings, reminding families that faith is foremost during this festive time of year. The Conception of Jesus Mary was a woman living in the Galilee area of Nazareth. She was engaged to a Jewish carpenter named Joseph. An angel visited the Virgin Mary and told her that she would conceive a child — a son — by the power of the Holy Spirit. When the son was born, she would name him Jesus. Mary questioned the angel, who reassured her that anything was possible by God and that Jesus would be God’s own son. Joseph was troubled when he found out Mary was with child and even considered breaking their engagement, which was allowed under Jewish law. But God soon sent another angel, this time to Joseph, in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph that his marriage to Mary and the birth of this child were His will. Joseph awoke from his dream and took Mary as his wife soon after, ready and willing to raise the child despite the public humiliation he may experience.

The Census During this time the Romans had control over many parts of the world, including where Joseph and Mary resided. Ruler Caesar Augustus decreed that every person living under Roman rule had to return to his town of origin to participate in a census so everyone could be taxed accordingly. Joseph, hailing from Bethlehem, had to return to this town with his very pregnant bride. They traveled for many days and, upon arriving in Bethlehem, found that the inns were full and there was no available lodging. Mary and Joseph took shelter in a stable and prepared to welcome their son. Jesus’ Arrival According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son, while in the stable. She wrapped him in cloth and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he

is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. — Luke Chapter 2 Many people visited the baby Jesus, including three wise men from the East who traveled by following a guiding star to bestow gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on the baby king. When Joseph and Mary had performed all the things necessary according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Nazareth with Jesus, who was growing strong in spirit and filled with wisdom and the grace of God.

Christmas Trees Change With Times For thousands of years, plants and trees that remain green throughout the year have held special significance through winter’s early darkness and cold. Not only were they a reminder that warmth, light and crops would return again with the spring, but in many countries their branches were draped over doors and windows in an effort to repel witches, ghosts, evil spirits and illness. But how did the evergreen become a fixture of Dec. 25? We can thank Germany for starting that tradition in the 16th century, when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. And it’s widely held that Martin Luther was the first to add light to a tree. As the story goes, the Protestant reformer was walking home one evening when he was struck by the beauty of stars twinkling among evergreens. To illustrate it for his family, he put up a tree in the main room of his house and wired candles to its branches. Americans weren’t so quick to catch on, however. New England Puritans regarded Christmas as sacred, and celebrations of the day, including Christmas carols, were described by William B r a d f ord a s “p a g a n mockery.” In fact, in 1659, the General Court of Massachusetts passed a law making any further observance of Dec. 25 other than a church service a penal offense: People actually

would be fined for hanging decorations! Prince Albert, husband to Queen Victoria, made Christmas trees fashionable in England by accepting his wife’s suggestion to decorate their family’s at Windsor Castle in the style of his childhood, with candles, sweets, fruits, gingerbread and an angel at the top. After a sketch of the tree ran in the Illustrated London News, what had been largely regarded as a pagan symbol rapidly gained popularity in both Britain and America. By 1870, fine glass ornaments were being imported from Germany, and in 1882, Edward Johnson, an assistant to Thomas Edison, produced the first set of electric tree lights. Since those early days, style trends in Christmas trees have been about as limitless as human imagination. Artificial trees, which became popular in the early 20th century, have been comprised of everything from colored ostrich feathers to papier mache to glass and plastic. In 1930, the Addis Housewares Company even created one from brush bristles, using

the same machinery it used to make toilet brushes. And if you’re not going with a live tree this year, who says it has to be green -- or an evergreen? Put an Indian spin on your holiday with a mango or banana tree. Choose from lipstick-

red or zebra striped, iceblue or lavender ... black for those with a Gothic streak ... even rainbow and candycorn shades. Whatever the hue, whether the lights are fiber optic or traditional bulbs, the branches strung with popcorn or electronics -- there’s something to tickle every fancy and illuminate every home with the spirit of the most wonderful time of the year. © 2016 King Featues Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The other day, I watched a neighbor walk her small Pug on an icy sidewalk in 19degree weather. Her dog wore a sweater but had no protection for its paws, and it was limping onto the pavement and then off onto the crusted snowpack to find somewhere to “go.” Even though she was taking her dog out for only a few minutes, the conditions were very uncomfortable and maybe even painful for the dog. Can you tell your readers to be aware of the outdoor conditions and only let their pets out if they’re capable of handling the

weather? Not all dogs are the same, and they don’t necessarily “get used to it” when it’s extremely cold or hot. — S i d P. , L o w e l l , Massachusetts DEAR SID: That is a very good point! Even with a protective sweater or vest and booties, conditions can just be too extreme for your pet. And that definition of “too extreme” can vary for each of your pets. A large dog may handle cold weather much better, for much longer, than a small or even medium-size dog. How can you tell what a dog can handle? First, some breeds are known for their tolerance to cold — or lack thereof. A Dachsund has very low tolerance and may quickly get ill, while a Bernese mountain dog thrives in cold, snowy landscapes. Second, each dog has its own level of tolerance, regardless of breed. Owners must protect their pets from the cold, observe

Residents of the City of Centralia who own a dog or cat are required to purchase a city tag for each animal. They can be purchased at City Hall. Directions to the shelter are as follows: Turn south at the intersection of Hwy. 161 E. (McCord) and Airport Rd. Go 1-1/2 miles, then turn left on Copple Rd. by Samantha Weaver • It was b elove d American humorist and social commentator Will Rogers who made the following sage observation: "Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like." • Famed Thoroughbred racehorse Man o' War was as successful off the track as he was on it. After his famed career, he retired to

stud, producing more than 64 stakes winners. Man o' War sired 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral, and he was grandsire of Seabiscuit, who was Horse of the Year in 1938. In 1966, 37 percent of all stakes winners were descended from Man o' War, and he appears at least 17 times in the bloodline of American Pharoah, the

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) I know, dear Lamb, that you don’t like anyone trying to take charge of one of your projects, but try to be a bit more flexible. A new idea could help hasten a positive result. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) I’m sure, like the time-thrifty Taurus that you are, that you’ve done much of your holiday shopping. But don’t relax yet. Wrap those gifts now to save yourself lots of unwanted pressure. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be receptive when a family member or friend asks to confide in you. Your positive reaction could ensure that he or she will have a happy holiday experience. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t be rushed into wrapping up that workplace problem. Consider leaving it until after the holidays. This way you’ll have the facts you need to reach the right resolution. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’ll get news that will make you glow brighter than the lights of the holiday season. Be sure to use what you learn both carefully and kindly, to avoid giving the wrong impression. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That frayed relationship could be mended in time for the holidays if you were more flexible. Give a little, and you could get back a lot more than you imagined. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Things might not seem to be settling down as quickly as you would prefer.

One of the earliest examples occurred in the late 6th centur y B CE, when Histiaeus, the tyrant of Miletus (in present-day Turkey), shaved the head of his most trusted slave, tattooed a message on the slave's scalp, and waited for the hair to grow back before dispatching the slave to his son-in-law, Aristagoras, along with instructions to shave the

But it might be just a little holiday time flutter. You’ll soon get news that will lead to more stability. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Stop getting so involved in everyone’s personal problems that you lose precious time with loved ones. Remember, even the Supreme Court closes for the holidays. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) All signs point to a bright holiday, with all of those pesky problems finally resolved in your favor. Share the good times with people you love and, of course, who love you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your plans should not be set in stone and cemented over. Leave some openings in case you need to make changes. Spend the holidays with your nearest and dearest. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Surprise! This holiday finds you on the receiving end of the generosity of those who are usually the recipients of so much that you give so freely and lovingly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) That piece of good news assures that you’ll be swimming in clearer, calmer waters this holiday season. There might be a storm or two ahead, but you’ll weather it all in fine style.
