Hillary Has Only Herself to Blame The Democrats have a simple explanation for Hillary Clinton's loss — the Russians did it. The party that has had a decades-long soft spot toward Moscow and been reluctant to believe that the Kremlin might have aggressive intentions or, say, cheat on an arms-control agreement is in a frenzy over Russian hacking that supposedly denied Hillary the victory that was rightfully hers. John Podesta, the chairman of a Hillary campaign that considered accepting the results of an election part of American writ as of about two months ago, refused several times on "Meet the Press" recently to say the presidential election was "free and fair." In a contest this narrow, anything might have been decisive. But the monocausal Russian explanation for Hillary's defeat ignores her myriad political and ethical vulnerabilities that the Democrats were determined to disregard, despite the obvious evidence of them for

years. Vladimir Putin couldn't have hand-picked a worse champion for them this year. There was no reason to believe that Hillary Clinton was a good politician who could deliver a compelling message, since she had never done it before. The Democratic establishment rushed into the arms of a candidate who, it was clear from the beginning, could well lose to Donald Trump, especially if a few things bounced the wrong way — and is now shocked and outraged that she indeed lost when a few things bounced the wrong way. Yes, the Russian interference was among those things. But some perspective: The hack of the Democratic National Committee disrupted the early going of the Democratic convention, but the convention was still a wild political success. Certainly none of them had the effect of the James Comey letter 11 days before the voting, which dominated the coverage for days and led to an immediate slide in Hillary's poll numbers. This is why Democrats tend to lump in James Comey with the Russians when arguing that the election was hacked, even though he's the director of the FBI, not the FSB. Comey is a public servant who had to grapple with the unprecedented cir-

cumstance of a major political party knowingly nominating a presidential candidate under FBI investigation. Who thought this was a good idea? Democrats just assumed that everything related to the investigation would go Hillary's way. She escaped indictment, but two of the worst moments of her campaign came courtesy of Comey, whose public explanation of her handling of her emails wounded her in the summer. It is true that late-deciding voters broke against Hillary, although it's impossible to disentangle the effect of WikiLeaks, the Comey letter and natural factors, i.e., she was the known quantity running as the quasi-incumbent at a time of great voter discontent, setting her up for a fall at the end. Democrats are calling for an investigation of Russian interference in the election. This is entirely appropriate. But everything points to the Democrats not being able to handle the fundamental truth of what happened on Nov. 8 — they took a flier on a historically weak candidate out of a misbegotten attachment to the Clinton dynasty, and paid a grave price for their foolish mistake. By Larry Cox Snappy Magazines Q: While going through a family storage area, I found about two dozen issues of Snappy Magazine from 1930 and 1931. Since they were tied up with string and labeled "smut," I was naturally interested. What can you tell me about them? — Steve, Metarie, Louisiana A: Your magazines were part of GlemArt, which also included Gay Parisienne and Paris Nights. Not exactly smut by today's standards (or lack thereof), the issues often included pinup illustrations, occasional nude art images and suggestive stories. Look for contributions by Octavus Ray Cohen, Achmed Abdullah (Michael Romanoff ), and Jack Woodford, since they are especially collectible. According to "Vintage Magazines Price Guide," by Richard Russell and Elaine Gross Russell and published by Krause Books, most issues of Snappy magazine are valued in the

3

$30-$85 range, but there are exceptions. Due to content, May 1931 and May 1933 issues are worth about $125 each; April 1933, $100; and June 1934, $150. According to these prices, your stack of Snappy publications -- if in good condition and complete — could easily be worth several thousand dollars. *** Q: I have an old 78-rpm recording of "Long Ago and Far Away" by Dick Haymes and Helen Forrest. I believe it is from World War II. What is it worth? — Billy, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Your recording — Decca 23317 — was issued in April 1944 and spent 18 weeks on the nation's bestsellers chart. At one point, it was the No. 1 recording in sales in the country. It was introduced in the film, "Cover Girl," featuring Betty Grable. Hubba Hubba. Your disc is worth about $5 in excellent condition. *** Q: I inherited a small

bowl, which my late grandma told me was hobnail glass. What exactly is hobnail glass? — Martha, Postsmouth, Virginia A: Hobnail glass is a pattern on pressed glass that has raised bumps as part of its distinctive design. Dozens of hobnail patterns and variants have been made in a wide variety of colors. This type of glass was perfected in 1886 by William Leighton Jr. and William F. Russell of Hobbs, Brockunier & Company. Incidentally, one of the earliest names for this glass pattern was dewdrop. 2ND ANNUAL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA BUCHHEIT TRIP

Centralia Buchheit presents wreaths to American Legion, AMVets and VFW. Pictured (L to R:) Joe Kelly; Steve Talber; Steve Edwards, assistant manager; Jim Murphy; Arland Speide; Michael Dreage; Frank McKnight and John Hendrickson, manager of Centralia Buchheit.

In 1992, Wreaths Across America was founded by Maine business, Morrill Worcester to continue and expand the annual wreathlaying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The organization's mission "remember, honor, teach" is carried out each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies each December at Arlington, as well as hundreds of veterans' cemeteries across the nation. Now a 501(c)(e) non-for-profit and national organization, they lay wreaths in over 900 cemeteries throughout the United States Last year, Buchheit Logistics donated a transport of wreaths to honor our fallen veterans and Logistics driver and Army Veteran Thomas Tinnin picked up and delivered the wreaths. Seeing the success of last year, Buchheit Logistics donated the transportation of two loads of wreaths this year. The journey started in the beginning of December when Buchheit Logistics drivers John White and Jim Griffaw headed to Maine to pick up wreaths to lay on the headstones of fallen soldiers.

Alabama and Clemson are clearly the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. I can see how Ohio State would be considered three or four. Washington, with 12 wins and one loss, can be seen as a contender for the four spot despite having a weaker schedule. It doesn't add up for me. My top four are Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, with Michigan or Washington as your shafted No. 5. What's truly peculiar about the situation is the nagging feeling you get about Michigan. The Wolverines still inspire a certain menace, and they could be the best team to take on Alabama and win. Nonetheless, Penn State, under the wise leadership of the East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania-bred James Franklin, has been gracious, it has shown humility. The Rose Bowl IS an honor, and it is a fitting cap to a great season. Take heart, those of you in Nittanyville, the bad days are finally over. You didn't get the go ahead this year, but there is no doubt you're back. Your future looks bright, and that is a welcome sight. In Memory Those we Love remain with us, For Love itself lives on. Cherished memories never fade, Because a loved one is gone. Those we Love can never be, More than a thought apart. For as long as there is a memory, They’ll live on in our heart.

Girl Scout Troop 8653 visited local nursing homes in Mt. Vernon throughout the month of December. The troop went to Mt. Ver non C ount r yside Manor, White Oaks Rehab Center, and Mt. Vernon Healthcare assisting residents in making Christmas ornaments to

decorate their trees with. The girls spread holiday cheer by singing Christmas music to the residents. Pictured at White Oaks Rehab Center (L to R) are front: Allie Sweeten, Paige Powers, Jaycie Bagby; back: Autumn Bain, Hannah Bancroft, Kenny Warner, Sydney Fenton, Ava Derry

Cooking With Lizzie

Ring in the New Year! Whether you celebrate it as the finale of the old or a kickoff for the new, New Year's is the perfect time for family and friend gatherings. Some of my favorite recipes are listed below.

Quick Shrimp Quiche

1 pkg. refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 1 lb. raw shrimp, shelled and deveined, or 1 pkg. (6 oz.) tiny frozen shrimp 12 very thin slices pepperoni, shredded Pinch each of salt, pepper and dry mustard

Find the Shopper’s Weekly online & on social media like Facebook & Twitter.

1 pimiento, slivered 1½ cups grated Swiss cheese 4 eggs 1¾ cups light cream 2 T. butter

Grease a 13x9x2-inch baking dish and cover bottom and sides with rectangles of crescent dough, pressing firmly to seal all seams. Sauté shrimp and pepperoni lightly in butter; add pimiento. Sprinkle grated cheese on crescent dough crust. Top with shrimp mixture. Beat eggs with remaining ingredients; pour over filling in crust. Bake in preheated 400° oven 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325° and bake about 30 minutes or until custard is set. To serve, cut into small squares. Makes about 24 appetizers.

Phyllo Meat Pie

1 lb. ground beef or lamb 1 medium onion, minced 1/4 cup dry red wine 1 tsp. dried parsley flakes 1 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 lb. (10 to 12 sheets) phyllo dough

2 T. butter or olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 T. tomato paste 1/2 tsp. oregano 1/4 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 cup butter, melted

Cook ground meat in butter until lightly browned, breaking up meat with a fork as it cooks. With a slotted spoon, transfer meat to a bowl and discard all but 2 tablespoons fat from the skillet. Cook onion and garlic in remaining fat until onion is soft. Add wine, tomato paste and seasonings and stir to blend well, cooking 2 to 3 minutes longer. Add to meat mixture and mix well. Let cool for 10 minutes, then stir in cheese. Carefully unroll phyllo dough and cut sheets in half to form 12x8-inch sheets. Place one sheet in bottom of a greased 12x8x2-inch baking pan and brush with melted butter; lay another sheet on top and brush again. Continue until there are 10 to 12 sheets in the pan, each brushed with melted butter. Spread meat mixture evenly over phyllo dough. Continue to layer remaining sheets of dough over the meat, brushing each with melted butter. Bake in a preheated 350° oven 1 hour or until top is crisp and golden. Cut into 2-inch squares, then cut each square into 2 triangles. Serve hot. Makes 48 appetizers.

Bacon And Egg Roulade

6 T. butter 1 tsp. salt 3 cups milk 1 lb. bacon 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese

3/4 cup flour Pinch of paprika 6 eggs, separated 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced

Melt butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add flour, salt and paprika; stir to combine. Gradually add milk, stirring until smooth. Cook over low heat, stirring often, about 4 minutes or until thick. Remove from heat and blend in egg yolks. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture. Line a 15x10- inch jelly roll pan with waxed paper; grease and flour the paper.· Pour batter into pan. Bake in a preheated 325° oven 40 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, cook bacon in a skillet until crisp. Drain and crumble. Pour off all but 1 tablespoon drippings; add onion and sauté until soft. Cool roulade slightly and turn out onto another sheet of waxed paper. Cover with cheese, then sprinkle on bacon and onion. Roll up from the long side. Remove to a platter and cut into 3/4-inch slices. Makes about 20 appetizers. SAUCE: 1 cup chicken broth 1/2 cup sugar 2 tsp. soy sauce

Sweet-N-Sour Turkey Bites

TURKEY BITES: 2 lbs. ground raw turkey meat 1 cup dry bread crumbs 1/2 tsp. pepper 2 tsp. oil

1 cup pineapple juice 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 2 T. cornstarch 2 eggs, beaten 1 tsp. salt 2 T. butter

Combine sauce ingredients in a large saucepan. Stir to dissolve sugar and cornstarch. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sauce becomes clear. Cook 1 minute. Lightly mix turkey, eggs, bread crumbs, salt and pepper. Shape into small uniform-size balls. Heat butter and oil in a skillet and sauté turkey bites, a few at a time. Add them to the sauce and simmer 15 minutes. (Or place sautéed turkey bites in a casserole, add sauce and bake, uncovered, in a preheated 350° oven 20 minutes.) Makes about 70 appetizers. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Believe in Miracles Christmas is wrapped in miracles. The prophets foretold the coming of Christ, who he was, where and how he would be born, centuries before his birth. The appearance of angels, the Christmas star that led the magi from the east to the precise locat ion of C hr ist in Bethlehem, the providence of God, the miraculous conception of Christ by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the young virgin Mary, remind us that God is a God of miracles who orchestrates his sovereign plan for the world t h at h a d b e c o m e shrouded in darkness. For many, Christmas is a trying time, colored by grief, loneliness, and the struggles of life This Christmas you can be illuminated with the light of Christmas if you will believe in miracles. BE AWARE OF ALL THE SIGNS AND WONDERS OF THE CHRISTMAS STORY. Read the many prophesies of the coming Christ fulfilled in Jesus with pin-point accuracy. “But as for you Bethlehem Ephrathah . . . from you one will go forth for me to be ruler

1. Is the book of Luke in the Old or New Testament or neither? 2. From Matthew 1:18, when Mary became pregnant, she and Joseph were ... ? Married, Engaged, Just friends, Strangers 3. For the journey to Bethlehem, how did

of Israel.” (Micah 5:2) The Jewish scholars verified to King Herod that, according to this prophecy, the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Jeremiah prophesied that when Messiah would be born there would be a slaughter of male babies in the environs of Bethlehem. ( Jeremiah 31;15; Matt he w 2 : 1 1 - 1 8 ) History verifies that this actually happened. Perhaps the greatest sign was the prophesy of the virgin birth of Christ. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:13) Faith is based on the inerrant Word of God. BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. God sent the angel Gabriel to the priest Zacharias to announce that his wife, Elizabeth, would have a son in her old age, who would be called John and be the forerunner of Christ. Zacharias had a hard time believing, so

9

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Mt. Vernon Area

the angel gave him a sign, “Behold, you will be mute and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.” (Luke 1:1920) Do not doubt God’s word, but believe the God of miracles. When Mary asked how she a virgin could give birth to the Messiah, the angel said, “With God nothing will be impossible.” (Luke 1:30-37) When the pregnant Elizabeth was met by the pregnant virgin Mary, she prophesied, ‘Blessed are you among, women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb . . . Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.’” (Luke 1:39-45) Mary was blessed because she believed. There is a Christmas blessing waiting for you, if you will believe. BECOME A CHILD OF GOD BY R E C E I V I NG T H E GREATEST MIRACLE OF ALL – THE NEW BIRTH. After John the Baptist was born, his father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed his people, for he has raised up a horn of salvation for us.” Then he spoke of the ministry of his son, John the Baptist, “And you, child, will go before the face of the Lord . . . to give knowledge of salvation . . . by the remission of their sins.” (Luke 1:67-79) Many become involved in the fables of Santa Claus during Christmas, but fewer believe in the reason for the season. Jesus was born to die upon the tree as the supreme sacrifice for sin. The greatest miracle of all happens when, by faith, you receive Jesus as your Savior and Lord. You are born again! (John 3:3) Charles Wesley wrote in the great Christmas carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” — “Come, desire of nations, come, fix in us thy humble home.” What a miracle, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27) Believe in miracles! God is the God of miracles! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was notoriously prolific American author and academic Isaac Asimov, who died in 1992, who made the following sage observation: "There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that de-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With the new year’s opportunities almost within reach, the Arian’s courageous aspects are raring to go. And don’t be surprised if a lot of people follow the zodiac’s most trusted leader. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Change lies ahead for the brave Bovine who is ready to shuck off the tried and true to try something new. But appearances can be deceptive. Check it all out before you charge into anything. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This week promises a peek into what the new year holds for the Gemini Twins, both in love and careers. Family matters continue to be a factor in decisions you’re going to be facing. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) As you move into the new year, your travel aspects grow stronger, and you might find yourself making decisions about a destination and a traveling companion sooner than you’d expected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The new year holds both glitter and gold. This means Leos and Leonas should begin getting the facts they’ll need to separate the real thing from the sham in order to make important decisions next year. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A good way to start the new year might be to arrange for a visit to someone you haven’t seen in a long time. You also might want to pick up that project you put off a while back. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) As you contemplate the new year’s potential, you might want to talk things over with people who are

or have been where you want to go. Their experience and advice can be helpful. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone close to you might feel like you have no more room for him or her in your life. This calls for immediate reassurance of your love so you can start the new year on a high note. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The coming year will bring more people into your life. Some situations might not work out as well as others. But overall, everyone earns something, and that’s always a good thing. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new year could find you indulging in one or more of the hobbies you’ve always wanted to take up. And don’t be surprised if they ultimately direct you toward a new career. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The artistic Aquarian should find more opportunities in the new year. You might even make some potentially helpful contacts as you gather to ring in the year 2012. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The new year offers challenges for Pisceans who want to make better use of the skills they now have and learn new ones. Personal relationships show stronger positive aspects.
