Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter large loaf pan and set aside. In large bowl, cream together butter and honey. Stir in egg and bananas. In separate bowl sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add dry ingredients alternately with yogurt to creamed mixture, blending well after each addition. Stir in nuts. Spoon batter into buttered loaf pan. Bake 45 to 35 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Allow to cool about 1 hour before removing from pan. Cool before slicing. Yield 12 servings.

2 T. honey, warmed 2 T. Marsala wine 1/3 c unsalted butter, melted 1/2 c. dried cranberries

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly oil baking sheet and set aside. In medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt, set aside. Place buttermilk, honey and Marsala in large bowl. Whisk together until well blended. Add half the flour mixture and stir until incorporated. You will have a somewhat lumpy batter at this point. Add melted butter a little at a time, beating after each addition, creating a smooth batter. Stir in remaining flour mixture and cranberries until just incorporated. Dough will be stiff and slightly sticky. Turn out onto floured work surface. Turn and knead dough several times, then divide into thirds. Form each third into a uniform thick circle. Cut each circle into quarters and place remaining wedges on baking sheet. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until lightly browned. Yield: 12 scones. Blueberry Spice Coffee Cake The delicate use of the strong spices complements the sweetness of the dried blueberries. Try it with dried cranberries or currents for a variation. Cake: 2-1/3 c. whole wheat pastry flour 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg Topping: 1 T. unsalted butter 1/4 c. honey 2 T. buttermilk

2/3 c. unsalted butter 3/4 c. honey 1 c. buttermilk 3 large eggs 1/4 c. dried blueberries 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 c. finely chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly butter 8" x 8" x 2" cake pan. In medium bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. In large bowl, cream together butter and honey. Add buttermilk and eggs, mixing well to blend. Add dry ingredients along with blueberries and stir to just moisten. Spoon batter into prepared baking pan and bake for 40-45 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool on rack for 10 minutes, then turn out onto serving plate. Make topping by combining butter, honey, buttermilk and cinnamon in small saucepan. Heat over high to the candy point, a boil that you cannot stir down. Cook for 1 minute, then add nuts. Boil for a minute or two, then pour over cake. Cool completely before serving. Yield: 16 servings. Cool, crisp mornings bring back sweet memories of my grandmother's house. She loved to bake and cook and was an expert at both. I think it was just one way she expressed love while taking care of us. No wonder my mother and I both are most comfortable in the kitchen. Even though friends and family gathering for morning coffee and coffee cake may be a thing of the past, this tradition is well worth revisiting in our fast-paced world, even if just on the weekends Baked goodies, hot from the oven, evoke a coziness that can be enjoyed by all. Why not start your own tradition.

Where do I start! The best place would be mid-week, last week, starting with PresidentElect Donald Trump who is off and running. He had named more appointments at that time than the last eight Presidents in the same time frame, and he had selected at least five candidates for consideration for the highly prestigious position of Secretary of State. In the running presently are former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, General David Petraeus, Senate Foreign Relations C ommittee Chairman Bob Corker and former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton. Now it's been rumored another name has been added to the list, that being Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, a Republican who was Obama's first Ambassador to China. In my opinion, my last pick would be Mitt Romney for his deplorable comments prior to the election when he showed his true colors. My pick would be General David Petraeus. Yes, I remember his conviction for mishandling classified information; compared to what Hillary Clinton did, it was nothing. But what I base my opinion of the General on is his experience and background when he was commanding the 101st Airborne in Iraq, his master plan and what became a successful surge in Iraq (that Barack Obama unhinged). The bottom line is General Petraeus is an American hero. But ultimately Donald Trump will make the right decision. Then, or course, there was the press conference with Press Secretary Josh Earnest, who should at this point join the rest of the Trump bashers and get on his pony and ride off into the sunset. The less than professional press conference addressed the jobs that Trump saved in Indiana by convincing Carrier to remain in the beautiful state of

Indiana, hence saving 1,100 jobs. But what do Obama, Josh Earnest and the extreme liberals do but start their usual complaining, stomping and jumping up and down. President-Elect Trump isn't even the President yet and has already started saving jobs in America, while some are crying intervention into business. Where were these rocket scientists when Obama gave — yes, gave — his friends, a California-based company, Solyndra, $535 million in taxpayers' money as a startup loan! And after Obama beating his chest on what a great job he'd done, in August two years later Solyndra filed for bankruptcy protection with our $535 million. By the way, the stimulus bill that funded Solyndra received not one Republican vote in the House and only three in the Senate. So let's see, what's next? Oh, Trump accepted a call from the leader of Taiwan, a congratulatory courtesy call, one of 48 or 49, and again the liberals are jumping up and down. Where were they when Barack Obama reached out to the murderous dictatorship of Cuba and the liberals hailed Obama as a hero? Really!! And then there came the hint that Obama might be looking at a career in media. Hmm, I thought that's what he'd been doing anyway. In my opinion, I have never seen a more sorry bunch of losers in my life than this election has produced. I'm sick of college presidents ordering flags flown at half staff or removed from campuses because Hillary Clinton lost. I'm sick of CNN and the other liberal networks being unfair and slanting every discussion. From painting Castro as a great guy, to a CNN producer being caught on a hot mic joking about Trump having a plane crash, to the thousand times they mention that Hillary did win the

popular vote, they just can't stop themselves. In my opinion, none of this is a laughing matter. And worse yet, during the horrific fire of Gatlinburg an extreme liberal citizen actually said on Facebook that they deserved what they got because Tennessee was a red state! Now here's the bottom line, folks: Hillary Clinton lost because of Hillary Clinton, and yet the Democrats still can't blame her or their failed policies, even though they've lost 63 seats in the House alone in the last six years. And what do they do? Appoint Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House again! The Democratic Party is no longer the John F. Kennedy Democratic Party, but the Barack Obama Party. In closing, six or seven months before the election I received a text from a former friend that decided we could no longer be friends because of the difference in our political views. I had no problem with our differences; for me it was always okay, we would just agree to disagree. But that's not the way he saw it, so he ended it. A short time after the election he emailed me wishing Trump well. And then the famous liberal came out in him when he said, "But I'm so proud of my party," and he talked about how they didn't say the election was rigged. So at this point I wonder if he would still be proud of his party? I sure wouldn't be. Oh well, perhaps it's time we all finally put party aside and see what we as a nation can do to improve our country. Until next week. AVOID HOLIDAY-RELATED WEIGHT GAIN The holiday season is a busy time of year dominated by social engagements. Many people find the hectic pace of the holiday season makes it challenging to eat healthy, especially since so many holiday parties include desserts and high-calorie foods. Various studies suggest holiday weight gain is common, though holiday revelers may not be gaining as much weight as they think they are. The New E n g l a n d Jou r n a l of Medicine found that while people’s perceived holiday weight gain hovers between zero and 6.7 pounds, in reality most people gain just under 1 pound during the holiday season. Though that may not seem like a lot, according to researche rs at t he Nat i ona l Institutes of Health, many people never lose the weight they gain during the winter holidays. The pounds add up year after year, making holiday weight gain a significant contributor to adult obesity. The holiday season does not need to derail a healthy lifestyle. Consider these

tips to avoid extra pounds come the holiday season. • Eat before you go shopping. Leaving the house hungry may tempt you to make impulse food purchases that can compromise healthy diets. It’s easy to grab a quick convenience item at the food court or from a vending machine. However, eating a snack before you leave will alleviate hunger and you can control the foods that go into your body. • Make smarter food choices. When visiting a holiday party buffet line or grabbing an on-the-go snack, think about the foods you choose. Look for low-calorie items that will still fill you up. Proteins, complex carbohydrates and vegetables are good choices. Avoid creamy dips and dressings, and if you want to try something fried or cheese-laden, do so only sparingly. • Be selective with sweets. Sweets are readily available during the holiday season. Rather than filling up your plate with a little “bite” of each dessert you want to try, select your favorite and then enjoy a reasonable

portion. • Limit sampling while cooking. If you are entertaining others, cut down on tasting while you prepare the meal. Those calories can add up without you knowing it, and soon you’ve eaten an entire portion even before the festivities begin. • Pack healthy snacks. It’s always a good idea to have healthy snacks at the

ready to tame random hunger pangs. Bring a favorite treat with you while shopping or if you will be visiting others. This helps you control your portion size and can keep you from overeating. • Mind your drinks, too. Many beverages, including alcoholic beverages and sweetened soft drinks, are high in calories. A single serving of wine can have

anywhere from 100 to 300 calories. It’s easy to lose count of caloric intake when indulging, but opt for low-calorie drinks or water whenever possible. • Increase your level of physical activity. Find ways to remain physically active during the holiday season. Park further away from mall entrances so you can walk a greater distance and burn more calories. Take a

few extra laps around the mall. Opt for the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. If you’re at a party with upbeat music, get on the dance floor and work off some calories. Holiday weight gain may seem like an inevitability. However, with some forward thinking and smart choices, holiday celebrants can prevent weight gain this holiday season.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

What do you Live For? The answer to this question could tell a lot about you, “What do you live for?” While taking my mother home after Thanksgiving, we stopped at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. I noticed the slogan on a soft drink machine, “Live for the Fiz. Live for Now.” What do you live for? I’ve asked several people this telling question. One gentleman gave a philosophical answer, “To take the moral high road.” Others replied, “I live for the weekend.” “I live to party.” “I live for golf.” Perhaps the most frequent answer was, “I live for my children.” I stopped at a McDonald’s and asked an older man sto op e d ove r and perched precariously on one of those high chairs and tables. “What do you live for? “I live for Jesus,” he replied. But for the next several minutes he regaled me with his love of country music, the Nashville Channel, Johnny Cash’s Country Music Museum, and when Minnie Pearl performed at the old Eagle Theater in our hometown. What do you live for? What if that one thing was taken from you? Would you be left empty at the center of your being? One of the greatest men of God who ever lived, the apostle Paul, gave us the perfect answer, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die

is gain.” (Philippians 1:21) Paul then revealed his life consuming passion, “That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, if by any means, I may attain to the resurrection of the dead.” (Philippians 3:10) If we live by these life consuming passions, we won’t come up empty at the end of our life, but will enter eternity as “more than a conqueror.” TO LIVE IS CHRIST. Paul’s passion was Jesus. Paul lived for Jesus. “For to me to live is Christ.” (Philippians 1:21) Many people talk the walk, but fewer walk the talk. Jesus is the one thing that cannot be taken from you. (Luke 10:41-42) Jesus said Mary had chosen it. What about you? TO KNOW HIM. Paul’s passion wasn’t to know about Jesus but to know Him personally and intimately. Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if any man hears my voice and opens unto me, I will come into him and sup with him, and he will me.” (Revelation 3:20) It takes a lifetime to really know Jesus, but it’s a life of joy and adventure. TO KNOW THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION. (Philippians 3:10) Jesus is alive. The resurrection power of the Holy Spirit transforms a believer into the

image of Christ. The resurrection power of Jesus will work through the believer in signs, wonders, and miracles as he did through the apostle Paul. (Mark 16:17; Acts 1:8) TO KNOW THE FELLOWSHIP OF HIS SUFFERINGS. (Philippians 3:10) Someone has said, “If you don’t bear the cross, you won’t wear t he crow n.” What enabled Paul to suffer the many hardships and trials for the gospel? His love for Christ. There is a sweet, intimate fellowship with Jesus for those who pick up their cross and follow Jesus. TO BE CONFORMED TO HIS DEATH. The more a believer dies to self, the more Jesus lives in and through them. The cross of Christ is the only means to crucify the flesh of self. The pinnacle of a believer’s life is the crucified life. (Galatians 2:20) TO ATTAIN TO THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD. The soft drink slogan says, “Live for the Fiz. Live for Now.” Paul lived with eternity in view. “To die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21) “If, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:10) There is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun. What do you live for? Can you say with Paul, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain”? You can begin today. “But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name.” (John 1:12) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR "CAPES & CROWNS" ACADEMY PRINCESS / SUPERHERO — AGES 2–10

At the Holiday Inn on January 21, 2016, Jefferson County CEO class will be hosting the Capes and Crowns Academy from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Before the event, snacks and refreshments will be provided. During the day, kids ages 2-10 will be learning how to become a princess or superhero with

t heme d ac t iv it ies a l l throughout the event. For the children choosing to be princesses, the activities would include making a crown, a hairstyle to fit the crown into their hair, making Frozen play snow, a ring toss, and learning the princess walk and talk. As for the superheroes, they will design

their own mask, make slime and navigate through “laser beams” in a Spiderman themed laboratory, and a Captain America shield toss. There will also be a bouncy house for each group. Your favorite princesses and superheros will be available for photo opportunities and interactions with the kids.

Wrapping up the day will be a ceremony presenting certificates to all the little princesses and superheroes. Tickets are available online. You can visit Jefferson County CEO Facebook page to order your tickets. Kids are encouraged to wear their favorite princess/superhero costumes for the day.

Tickets include one child and one adult. There will be a VIP package available for those wanting to make the day extra special. Tickets will

be sold at Rend Lake Market Place and RARE starting on December 9, 2016. More designated ticket spots will be announced later. Get your tickets before they run out. Only a limited amount is available.

SOCIAL SECURITYʼS GIFT TO CHILDREN IS SECURITY BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

This is the season of caring. No matter your religion or belief, December is also considered a time to focus on the children we love. Whether we’re wrapping Santa’s gifts, buying Hanukkah treats, decorating the house in celebration of Kwanzaa, or volunteering for a toy drive, children add joy to the holiday season. And we at Social Security definitely know a thing or two about helping children. Often overlooked in the paperwork that prospective parents fill out in preparation for a child’s birth is an application for a Social Security number and card. Typically, the hospital will ask if you want to apply for a Social Security number for your newborn as part of the birth registration process. This is the easiest and fastest way to apply. The Social Security card typically arrives about a week to ten days after that little bundle of joy! You can learn about Social Security numbers for children by reading our publication, Social Security Numbers for Children, available at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs.

A child needs a Social Security number if he or she is going to have a bank account, if a relative is buying savings bonds for the child, if the child will have medical coverage, or if the child will receive government services. You’ll also need a Social Security number for a child to claim him or her on your tax returns. If you wait to apply, you will have to visit a Social Security office and you’ll need to: • Complete an Application For a Social Security Card (Form SS-5); • Show us original documents proving your child’s U.S. citizenship, age, and identity; and • Show us documents proving your identity. Remember, a child age 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number must appear in person for the interview, even though a parent or guardian will sign the application on the child’s behalf. Children with disabilities are among our most vulnerable citizens. Social Security is dedicated to helping those

with qualifying disabilities and their families through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. To qualify for SSI: • The child must have a physical or mental condition, or a combination of conditions, resulting in “marked and severe functional limitations.” This means that the condition(s) must severely limit your child’s activities; • The child’s condition(s) must be severe, last for at least 12 months, or be expected to result in death; • I f y o u r c h i l d ’s condition(s) does not result in “marked and severe limitations,” or does not result in those limitations lasting for at least 12 months, your child will not qualify for SSI; and • The child must not be working and earning more than $1,090 a month in 2016. (This amount usually changes every year.) If he or she is working and earning that much money, your child will not be eligible for benefits. Learn the details about benefits for children by

by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century Swiss-American psychiatrist Elisabeth KublerRoss who made the following sage observation: "People are like stainedglass windows: They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within." • At the outbreak of World War I, American

financier August Belmont Jr. volunteered for the U.S. Army — at the age of 64. He served in France as a major in the Army Air Service. His wife was so proud that when one of their mares, Mahubah, gave birth to a colt in 1917, she named it in honor of her husband, not realizing that Man o' War would become one of the greatest racehorses of all

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your curiosity might not be appreciated by everyone. Expect some resistance in getting answers to your questions. But stay with it. You need facts in order to make important decisions. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some of the mystery surrounding your recent fiscal situation soon will be dispelled with a clear explanation. Use this new knowledge to help you chart a fresh financial course. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Start your Hanukkah and Christmas gift-buying now. This will help avoid problems caused by possible midDecember delays. A family member has important information. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Use a little more sense in how you plan to spend your end-of-the-year holiday dollars. Meanwhile, you continue to gain support for your stand on a workplace issue. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Wearing that big, loving Lion’s heart of yours on your sleeve leaves it unprotected. Let things develop a little more before you allow your emotions to spill over. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to September 22) You might feel you’re not ready to patch up an unraveled relationship. But the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be for all parties to take the first healing step. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your end-of-the-year holiday plans could be disrupted by something out of your control, but stay the course.

Most people, however, haven't heard of a nocebo — a similarly harmless substance that might make patients sick because they think it will. • It's not unknown for temperatures during a Siberian summer to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. • Almost a thousand years before Johannes Gutenberg introduced mechanical moveable type to Europe, people in Asia were already printing messages set in type. The

Ultimately, things will settle back into a normal pace. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your honest approach to a workplace project earns you both respect and credit from those in charge. Meanwhile, that personal problem still needs to be dealt with. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Money could be a little tight this month. This means the usually bargain-oblivious Sagittarian should look for ways to save on endof-the-year holidays. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Examine the facts, and you might find that it’s a wiser move to shift gears and redirect some of your goals before the end of the year. Someone close to you offers good advice. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful that your generosity is not abused. Find out more, both about the special favors you might be asked to grant and who is asking for them. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’ve come through a recent rough time in great shape. Congratulations. Now go out and enjoy your wellearned rewards. More good news comes in mid-December. BORN THIS WEEK: You aim for truth, and you usually find it.
