The Sacking of Romo There is something undeniable about Tony Romo. He is all but universally beloved by anybody who has ever coached or played with him. As the franchise face for America's Team, his mug gets plastered on both sporting and celebrity gossip magazines alike. But you know, he's got a bad back and he has yet "to win the big one." "Yet to win the big one" is perhaps the most damning thing you can say about an NFL quarterback, particularly when you're a Dallas Cowboy and have to live up to legendary names like Don Meredith, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. And it's something that Romo has heard a lot. People are always unsure about him. Is he a fearless playmaker, or is he a guy who makes bad decisions and refuses to stick to the script? Well, we may never know

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 that answer, at least not in Dallas, because a new story is being written there as we speak by Rayne Dakota "Dak" Prescott. Prescott is accustomed to rewrites. He rewrote Mississippi State's record book, setting 38 school records and setting the record for most passing yards in Orange Bowl history. Picked in the fourth round by the Cowboys in 2016, he broke the rookie record for most completions without an interception as a rookie, a record once held by a guy named Tom Brady ... a guy who didn't break 38 records at Michigan. Prescott plays like the pro he is every week, he plays as if he's been there before, and he plays like a leader who will take you places that you've never been before. When you can orchestrate not one, but two game-winning full-field drives to come from behind at Pittsburgh, you are treading on untouched real estate. But that is, of course, exactly what Prescott did. The Cowboys as a franchise know how to deal with the press. While more than a few players aren't smart

enough to keep their names out of the police blotter, they know better than to tip their hand regarding the quarterback situation. "I'll let those in charge of making that decision make that decision" is the common refrain. The team's larger-than-life owner is a near-obsessive fan of Tony Romo. (He has gone on record saying that he would be heartbroken if he didn't win Romo a championship. Huh? Shouldn't that be the other way around?) Even he had to begrudgingly admit that the team had to go with "the hot hand." The aforementioned hand is Prescott's, and no doubt about it, it is scorching hot. Romo may be burning to get back into the game, but with each passing win โ€” and I do mean "passing" win โ€” the more it appears that we will be seeing Romo in another uniform come next fall. Time waits for no one, and in the NFL, you're only as good as your backup's first game. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. ยฉ 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

SOCIAL SECURITYสผS GIFT TO CHILDREN IS SECURITY BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

This is the season of caring. No matter your religion or belief, December is also considered a time to focus on the children we love. Whether weโ€™re wrapping Santaโ€™s gifts, buying Hanukkah treats, decorating the house in celebration of Kwanzaa, or volunteering for a toy drive, children add joy to the holiday season. And we at Social Security definitely know a thing or two about helping children. Often overlooked in the paperwork that prospective parents fill out in preparation for a childโ€™s birth is an application for a Social Security number and card. Typically, the hospital will ask if you want to apply for a Social Security number for your newborn as part of the birth registration process. This is the easiest and fastest way to apply. The Social Security card typically arrives about a week to ten days after that little bundle of joy! You can learn about Social Security numbers for children by reading our publication, Social Security Numbers for Children, available at www. socialsecurity.gov/pubs. A child needs a Social Security number if he or she is going to have a bank account, if a relative is buying savings bonds for the child, if the child will have medical coverage, or if the child will receive government services. Youโ€™ll also need a Social Security number for a child to claim him or her on your tax returns. If you wait to apply, you will have to visit a Social Security office and youโ€™ll need to: โ€ข Complete an Application For a Social Security Card (Form SS-5); โ€ข Show us original documents proving your childโ€™s U.S. citizenship, age, and identity; and โ€ข Show us documents proving your identity. Remember, a child age 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number

must appear in person for the interview, even though a parent or guardian will sign the application on the childโ€™s behalf. Children with disabilities are among our most vulnerable citizens. Social Security is dedicated to helping those with qualifying disabilities and their families through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. To qualify for SSI: โ€ข The child must have a physical or mental condition, or a combination of conditions, resulting in โ€œmarked and severe functional limitations.โ€ This means that the condition(s) must severely limit your childโ€™s activities; โ€ข The childโ€™s condition(s) must be severe, last for at least 12 months, or be expected to result in death; โ€ข I f y o u r c h i l d โ€™s condition(s) does not result in โ€œmarked and severe limitations,โ€ or does not result in those limitations lasting for at least 12 months, your child will not qualify for SSI; and โ€ข The child must not be working and earning more than $1,090 a month in 2016. (This amount usually changes every year.) If he or she is working and earning that much money, your child will not be eligible for benefits. Learn the details about benefits for children by reading our publication, Benefits for Children with Disabilities, available at www. socialsecurity.gov/pubs. Visit www.socialsecurity. gov/people/kids to learn more about all we do to care for children. Caring for the next generation is a central part of securing today and tomorrow, during the holidays and all year long. Question: Iโ€™m 17 and eager to start my first summer job, but my mother misplaced my Social Security card. How can I get another? Answer: If you know your Social

Security number, you may not need to get a replacement card to obtain employment. However, if a prospective employer requests it, you can get a replacement Social Security card by following the steps below. There is no charge for a Social Security card, but you are limited to three per calendar year and 10 replacement cards during your lifetime. You will need to: โ€ข Show the required documents. We need to see different documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are requesting. Go to www.socialsecurity. gov/ssnumber to find out what documents you will have to show; โ€ข Fill out an Application for a Social Security Card; and โ€ข Take or mail your application and original or certified copies of the original documents to your local

Social Security office. For more information, read our pamphlet, Your Social Security Number and Card at www.socialsecurity. gov/pubs.

โ€“Henry James Cool, crisp mornings bring back sweet memories of my grandmother's house. She loved to bake and cook and was an expert at both. I think it was just one way she expressed love while taking care of us. No wonder my mother and I both are most comfortable in the kitchen. Even though friends and family gathering for morning coffee and coffee cake may be a thing of the past, this tradition is well worth revisiting in our fast-paced world, even if just on the weekends Baked goodies, hot from the oven, evoke a coziness that can be enjoyed by all. Why not start your own tradition. Banana Nut Bread For a special treat, top a toasted slice with cream cheese, chopped nuts and a drizzle of honey. 2/3 c. unsalted butter 1/2 c. honey 2 large eggs, beaten 1-1/2 c. mashed ripe banana (about 3 large) 2-3/4 c. whole wheat pastry flour

1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. plain nonfat yogurt 1 c. chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Butter large loaf pan and set aside. In large bowl, cream together butter and honey. Stir in egg and bananas. In separate bowl sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add dry ingredients alternately with yogurt to creamed mixture, blending well after each addition. Stir in nuts. Spoon batter into buttered loaf pan. Bake 45 to 35 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Allow to cool about 1 hour before removing from pan. Cool before slicing. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF. Lightly oil baking sheet and set aside. In medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt, set aside. Place buttermilk, honey and Marsala in large bowl. Whisk together until well blended. Add half the flour mixture and stir until incorporated. You will have a somewhat lumpy batter at this point. Add melted butter a little at a time, beating after each addition, creating a smooth batter. Stir in remaining flour mixture and cranberries until just incorporated. Dough will be stiff and slightly sticky. Turn out onto floured work surface. Turn and knead dough several times, then divide into thirds. Form each third into a uniform thick circle. Cut each circle into quarters and place remaining wedges on baking sheet. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until lightly browned. Yield: 12 scones.

WEEKLY PAPERS www.theshoppersweekly.com

301 E. Broadway d โ€ข Centralia l 1-800-479-6323

Where do I start! The best place would be mid-week, last week, starting with PresidentElect Donald Trump who is off and running. He had named more appointments at that time than the last eight Presidents in the same time frame, and he had selected at least five candidates for consideration for the highly prestigious position of Secretary of State. In the running presently are former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, General David Petraeus, Senate Foreign Relations C ommittee Chairman Bob Corker and former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton. Now it's been rumored another name has been added to the list, that being Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, a Republican who was Obama's first Ambassador to China. In my opinion, my last pick would be Mitt Romney for his deplorable comments prior to the election when he showed his true colors. My pick would be General David Petraeus. Yes, I remember his conviction for mishandling classified information; compared to what Hillary Clinton did, it was nothing. But what I base my opinion of the General on is his experience and background when he was commanding the 101st Airborne in Iraq, his master plan and what became a successful surge in Iraq (that Barack Obama unhinged). The bottom line is General Petraeus is an American hero. But ultimately Donald Trump will make the right decision. Then, or course, there was the press conference with Press Secretary Josh Earnest, who should at this point join the rest of the Trump bashers and get on his pony and ride off into the sunset. The less than professional press conference addressed the jobs that Trump saved in Indiana by convincing Carrier to remain in the beautiful state of

Indiana, hence saving 1,100 jobs. But what do Obama, Josh Earnest and the extreme liberals do but start their usual complaining, stomping and jumping up and down. President-Elect Trump isn't even the President yet and has already started saving jobs in America, while some are crying intervention into business. Where were these rocket scientists when Obama gave โ€” yes, gave โ€” his friends, a California-based company, Solyndra, $535 million in taxpayers' money as a startup loan! And after Obama beating his chest on what a great job he'd done, in August two years later Solyndra filed for bankruptcy protection with our $535 million. By the way, the stimulus bill that funded Solyndra received not one Republican vote in the House and only three in the Senate. So let's see, what's next? Oh, Trump accepted a call from the leader of Taiwan, a congratulatory courtesy call, one of 48 or 49, and again the liberals are jumping up and down. Where were they when Barack Obama reached out to the murderous dictatorship of Cuba and the liberals hailed Obama as a hero? Really!! And then there came the hint that Obama might be looking at a career in media. Hmm, I thought that's what he'd been doing anyway. In my opinion, I have never seen a more sorry bunch of losers in my life than this election has produced. I'm sick of college presidents ordering flags flown at half staff or removed from campuses because Hillary Clinton lost. I'm sick of CNN and the other liberal networks being unfair and slanting every discussion. From painting Castro as a great guy, to a CNN producer being caught on a hot mic joking about Trump having a plane crash, to the thousand times they mention that Hillary did win the

popular vote, they just can't stop themselves. In my opinion, none of this is a laughing matter. And worse yet, during the horrific fire of Gatlinburg an extreme liberal citizen actually said on Facebook that they deserved what they got because Tennessee was a red state! Now here's the bottom line, folks: Hillary Clinton lost because of Hillary Clinton, and yet the Democrats still can't blame her or their failed policies, even though they've lost 63 seats in the House alone in the last six years. And what do they do? Appoint Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House again! The Democratic Party is no longer the John F. Kennedy Democratic Party, but the Barack Obama Party. In closing, six or seven months before the election I received a text from a former friend that decided we could no longer be friends because of the difference in our political views. I had no problem with our differences; for me it was always okay, we would just agree to disagree. But that's not the way he saw it, so he ended it. A short time after the election he emailed me wishing Trump well. And then the famous liberal came out in him when he said, "But I'm so proud of my party," and he talked about how they didn't say the election was rigged. So at this point I wonder if he would still be proud of his party? I sure wouldn't be. Oh well, perhaps it's time we all finally put party aside and see what we as a nation can do to improve our country. Until next week. ALL CENTRALIA BUSINESSES COMPLIANT WITH TOBACCO SALES LAWS The Centralia Police Department, with help from a grant awarded by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission's "Kids Can't Buy 'Em Here" Tobacco Enforcement Program, conducted Phase 1 of their 2016/2017 Tobacco Sales enforcement effort. On Wednesday November 30, 2016 the first round of tobacco compliance checks were conducted. These compliance checks are performed to determine if local tobacco retailers are complying with State minimum age tobacco laws that prohibit the sale of tobacco to minors. The City of Centralia has been educating tobacco retailers on minimum-age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of their customers while conducting compliance checks of

area tobacco retailers. This latest round of the grant compliance checks found all of the 23 retail businesses in Centralia being in compliance with the law. This is a compliance rate of 100%. Lieutenant Greg Dodson of the Centralia Police Department congratulates the retail managers and clerks of these businesses who denied the sale to the minors. It is extremely importance to keep tobacco out of the hands of our youth. Ninety percent of current adult smokers stated their addiction to tobacco started before they were legally able to purchase the product. Studies have also identified tobacco as a gateway drug for youth leading to more illicit drug use.

What do you Live For? The answer to this question could tell a lot about you, โ€œWhat do you live for?โ€ While taking my mother

home after Thanksgiving, we stopped at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. I noticed the slogan on a soft drink machine, โ€œLive for the Fiz. Live for Now.โ€ What do you live for? Iโ€™ve asked several

Just For Fun

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 people this telling question. One gentleman gave a philosophical answer, โ€œTo take the moral high road.โ€ Others replied, โ€œI live for the weekend.โ€ โ€œI live to party.โ€ โ€œI live for golf.โ€ Perhaps the most frequent answer was, โ€œI live for my children.โ€ I stopped at a McDonaldโ€™s and asked an older man stooped over and perched precariously on one of those high chairs and tables. โ€œWhat do you live for? โ€œI live for Jesus,โ€ he replied. But for the next several minutes he regaled me with his love of country music, the Nashville Channel, Johnny Cashโ€™s Country Music Museum, and when Minnie Pearl performed at the old Eagle Theater in our hometown. What do you live for? What if that one thing was taken from you? Would you be left empty at the center of your being? One of the greatest men of God who ever lived, the apostle Paul, gave us the perfect answer, โ€œFor to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.โ€ (Philippians 1:21) Paul then revealed his life consuming passion, โ€œThat I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, if by any means, I may attain to the resurrection of the dead.โ€ (Philippians 3:10) If we live by these life consuming passions, we wonโ€™t come up empty at the end of our life, but will enter eternity as โ€œmore than a conqueror.โ€ TO LIVE IS CHRIST. Paulโ€™s passion was Jesus. Paul lived for Jesus. โ€œFor to me to live is Christ.โ€ (Philippians 1:21) Many people talk the walk, but fewer walk the talk. Jesus is the one thing that cannot be taken from you. (Luke 10:41-42) Jesus said Mary had chosen it. What about you? TO KNOW HIM. Paulโ€™s passion wasnโ€™t to know about Jesus but to know Him personally and intimately. Jesus said, โ€œBehold, I stand at the door and knock, if any man hears my voice and opens unto me, I

will come into him and sup with him, and he will me.โ€ (Revelation 3:20) It takes a lifetime to really know Jesus, but itโ€™s a life of joy and adventure. TO KNOW THE POWER OF HIS RESURRECTION. (Philippians 3:10) Jesus is alive. The resurrection power of the Holy Spirit transforms a believer into the image of Christ. The resurrection power of Jesus will work through the believer in signs, wonders, and miracles as he did through the apostle Paul. (Mark 16:17; Acts 1:8) TO KNOW THE FELLOWSHIP OF HIS SUFFERINGS. (Philippians 3:10) Someone has said, โ€œIf you donโ€™t bear the cross, you wonโ€™t wear the crown.โ€ What enabled Paul to suffer the many hardships and trials for the gospel? His love for Christ. There is a sweet, intimate fellowship with Jesus for those who pick up their cross and follow Jesus. TO BE CONFORMED TO HIS DEATH. The more a believer dies to self, the more Jesus lives in and through them. The cross of Christ is the only means to crucify the flesh of self. The pinnacle of a believerโ€™s life is the crucified life. (Galatians 2:20) TO ATTAIN TO THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD. The soft drink slogan says, โ€œLive for the Fiz. Live for Now.โ€ Paul lived with eternity in view. โ€œTo die is gain.โ€ (Philippians 1:21) โ€œIf, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the deadโ€ (Philippians 3:10) There is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun. What do you live for? Can you say with Paul, โ€œFor to me, to live is Christ and to die is gainโ€? You can begin today. โ€œBut as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name.โ€ (John 1:12) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

OMEGA-3 POWERHOUSES Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that play an important role in relation to many functions of the body. The fatty acids EPA and DHA are well-known and found in fatty seafood, such as tuna, salmon and some shellfish. These fatty acids may be added to different foods as well, including dairy products and infant

formulas. Studies have shown that diets rich in omega-3s may reduce a person's risk for heart disease. Omega-3s have been associated with lower triglyceride levels, which can contribute to heart health. Consuming seafood or fish oil supplements also may be helpful in curbing the joint pain and stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis. In ad-

dition, fatty acids may promote neurological health that can ward off depression and anxiety and may help people with ADHD manage their symptoms. Omega-3s also are crucial in the development of brain health for young children, which may translate into decreased risk of developmental delay and improved communication and social skills.

A cancer diagnosis can be devastating to individuals and their families. Upon being diagnosed with cancer, patients may not know what lies ahead, including their prognosis for survival. Battling cancer may not be easy, but cancer researchers continue to look for ways to attack cancer cells and improve the prognosis for men and women diagnosed with the disease. In the United States, cancer death rates have been on the decline since the early 1990s. The National Cancer Instituteโ€™s most recent Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, published in March 2016, states that cancer death rates have decreased by 1.8 percent per year among men, 1.4 percent per year among women, and 2.0

percent per year among children up to 19 years of age through 2013. Numerous factors, including immunotherapy, are contributing to those lower death rates. Understanding immunotherapy can help cancer patients and their families gain a better grasp on treatment. What Is Immunotherapy? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer S o c i e t y. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the bodyโ€™s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically. Types Of Immunotherapy Certain cancers respond better to immunotherapy than others. Also, different types of immunotherapy may be more effective than others. The following are some of the types of treatment doctors may prescribe. โ€ข Monoclonal antibodies: These are drugs that are designed to bind to specific targets in the body. They can cause an immune response that destroys cancer cells. Other monoclonal antibodies (targeted therapy) mark

cancer cells so that the immune system can seek and destroy them. โ€ข Adoptive cell transfer: The National Cancer Institute says adoptive cell transfer attempts to boost the natural ability of T cells to fight cancer. T cells are a type of white blood cell and part of the immune system. โ€ข Immune checkpoint inhibitors: These drugs basically rev up the immune system, which helps it recognize and attack cancer cells. โ€ข Cytokines: These proteins are made by the bodyโ€™s cells and play important roles in the bodyโ€™s normal immune responses. They also influence the immune systemโ€™s ability to respond

to cancer. The two main types of cytokines used to treat cancer are interferons and interleukins. Physicians will discuss various cancer therapies and treatments, including immunotherapy, upon diagnosing a patient with cancer. Side effects to immunotherapy may include pain, swelling, soreness, redness, itchiness, and rash. Flu-like symptoms also are possible as the body attacks the cancer cells. Immunotherapy is given orally, topically and intravenously. Patients can discuss how often treatment will be administered and whether immunotherapy offers their best chances for beating the disease.

PREVENT COLDS AND FLU BEFORE THEY START Though the holiday season is a joyous time of year, itโ€™s also one when many people succumb to cold and flu. Spending so much time indoors in close proximity to others can increase a personโ€™s susceptibility to flu and cold, so itโ€™s no surprise that the holiday season, when many people spend lots of time celebrating indoors with family and friends, marks the unofficial start to cold and flu season. Despite what Mom might have told you about going out into the cold with a wet head or leaving home without wearing a coat,

such actions do not increase your risk for cold and flu. But being cooped up indoors, where germs from others who are sick can fester, can increase that risk. Cold weather also can be a factor, but not for the reason you think. According to a 2007 study from researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the influenza virus is more stable and can stay in the air longer when the air is cold and dry. Dr. Peter Palese, a flu researcher who is professor and chairman of the schoolโ€™s microbiology department, examined guinea pigs infected with

the flu virus to determine the connection between the flu and cold weather. Dr. Palese varied the air temperature and humidity in the guinea pigsโ€™ environment and determined that flu transmission was best at 41 F, while the prevalence of transmission declined as the temperature rose. By the time temperatures reached 86 F, the virus was not transmitted at all. Low humidity also helped transmit the virus, and high humidity stopped the spread. Flu viruses spread through the air in water droplets expelled from sick individualsโ€™ noses and

mouths. High humidity may cause these droplets to fall to the ground before they can infect someone else. Colds are largely transmitted through surface contact with the virus or direct contact with a sick individual. The cold virus is then contracted on the hands and typically transferred to the nose, eyes or mouth through inadvertent touching of these areas. Spending time indoors in close quarters with other people, which is more common in the winter, can facilitate the spread of colds as well as the flu virus.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HOT AND COLD THERAPIES Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the bodyโ€™s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mist a ke. When t hat happ ens, the b o dyโ€™s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. The following breakdown should not replace a physicianโ€™s advice, but it can help patients battling inflammation better understand both treatment options.

alike, heat works against inflammation by increasing blood flow and making connective tissues more flexible. Heat also can be used to combat edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the tissues of the body. Upon application, heat can temporarily reduce pain and alleviate stiffness in the joints. Heat also may temporarily relieve muscles spasms. The Cleveland Clinic notes that heat can be effective at relieving pain associated with worn-away cartilage in the joints because it eases chronically stiff joints and relaxes tight muscles. In addition, moist heat can relax painful neck spasms linked to nerves or blood vessels in the head or pain emanating from muscles in the neck. Heat can be applied via hot packs, infrared heat, paraffin baths, and hydrotherapy.

Cold Therapy Cold therapy, sometimes referred to as โ€œcryotherapy,โ€ can relieve pain associated with inflammation that has developed recently. Cold can help numb tissues and relieve muscle spasms and can also be used to alleviate pain associated with injuries. The Merck Manual notes that ice bags or cold packs can be used to apply cold. In addition, fluids that cool by evaporation, including ethyl chloride, may be applied topically. Some medicines may interact with ethyl chloride spray, so inflammation sufferers should consult their physiHeat Therapy According to the Merck cians before applying such Manual, a reference book sprays. The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area There are many ways to reduce your risk of contracting a cold or the flu virus this winter. Perhaps no preventive measure is more effective than getting a flu shot. In addition, wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs, and disinfect remote controls, computer keyboards, tablets, mobile phones, and other items that are handled by multiple people on any given day. In addition, spend as much time outdoors as possible so you can escape potentially contaminated indoor air.

If you come down with the flu, increase the humidity in your home by running the shower with the door open, using a recreational aquarium or boiling pots of water. Maintain a warm indoor temperature to reduce the likelihood that the flu virus will spread. Other ways to reduce your risk for cold and flu include: โ€ข maintaining a healthy diet โ€ข getting several minutes of sunlight per day โ€ข exercising regularlly

Cleveland Clinic, ice can be used to calm flare-ups and numb pain associated with chronic, inflammatory arthritis. Ice also can ease inflammation and numb pain linked to pulled muscles or injured tendons. Pain and inflammation resulting from the stretching or tearing of ligaments in

the joints may also be eased by applying ice to the affected area. Heat and cold therapies can effectively combat symptoms associated with inflammation, but such treatments should always be discussed with a physician before being instituted.

Holiday Temptations Can Spell Trouble DEAR PAWโ€™S CORNER: I know you warn people every holiday season about the dangers of their pets ingesting certain foods, like chocolate, onions and grapes. I wanted to share my experience from last Thanksgiving, when my terrier, โ€œBlake,โ€ sneaked into the kitchen and started eating leftovers off of plates piled on the counter. We were alerted by the crash of several plates onto the floor. Fortunately, we stopped Blake from trying to lick up spilled food amid the shattered dishes, but he had eaten a lot of high-fat foods โ€” stuffing, gravy, you name

it โ€” that were loaded with spices, onions and other ingredients. I kept a close eye on Blake over the next several hours, and made sure the emergency vetโ€™s number was on hand. Sure enough, Blake started looking lethargic and vomited; we put him in the car and drove right to the vet. Because I called ahead, they were able to treat him immediately, and he recovered without any lasting problems. I hope my experience can help other pet owners as the busy, distracting holiday season descends on us. โ€” Relieved Mom in Pittsburgh DEAR RELIEVED MOM: It certainly can! Thank you for sharing your experience. Keeping the emergency veterinarianโ€™s number close by โ€” added to a mobile phoneโ€™s contact list, written next to other key numbers on the refrigerator โ€” is very important during holidays, when

many vetsโ€™ offices are closed. And of course, because holiday gatherings can be distracting, it may be best

to keep pets in a secure, comfortable area away from loud noise and tempting foods. ยฉ 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

by Samantha Weaver โ€ข At the outbreak of World War I, American financier August Belmont Jr. volunteered for the U.S. Army โ€” at the age of 64. He served in France as a major in the Army Air Service. His wife was so proud that when one of their mares, Mahubah, gave birth to a colt in 1917, she named it in honor of her husband, not realizing that Man o' War would become one of the

greatest racehorses of all time. โ€ข You doubtless know that a placebo is a pill or substance that is given to a patient like a medication, but in fact has no physical effect. Most people, however, haven't heard of a nocebo โ€” a similarly harmless substance that might make patients sick because they think it will.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your curiosity might not be appreciated by everyone. Expect some resistance in getting answers to your questions. But stay with it. You need facts in order to make important decisions. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some of the mystery surrounding your recent fiscal situation soon will be dispelled with a clear explanation. Use this new knowledge to help you chart a fresh financial course. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Start your Hanukkah and Christmas gift-buying now. This will help avoid problems caused by possible midDecember delays. A family member has important information. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Use a little more sense in how you plan to spend your end-of-the-year holiday dollars. Meanwhile, you continue to gain support for your stand on a workplace issue. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Wearing that big, loving Lionโ€™s heart of yours on your sleeve leaves it unprotected. Let things develop a little more before you allow your emotions to spill over. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to September 22) You might feel youโ€™re not ready to patch up an unraveled relationship. But the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be for all parties to take the first healing step. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your end-of-the-year holiday plans could be disrupted by something out of your control, but stay the course.

โ€ข Almost a thousand years before Johannes Gutenberg introduced mechanical moveable type to Europe, people in Asia were already printing messages set in type. The oldest recorded such piece, from China, translates as "Beware of Dog." โ€ข You might be surprised to learn that the oldest public university in the United States is the University of North

Carolina. โ€ข If you're like the average human being, you have approximately 250,000 sweat glands on your feet alone. *** Thought for the Day: " There is no human being who, as a result of desiring to build a better life, should be named or declared illegal.." โ€” Alejandro G. Inarritu ยฉ 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Just For Fun Answers

Ultimately, things will settle back into a normal pace. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your honest approach to a workplace project earns you both respect and credit from those in charge. Meanwhile, that personal problem still needs to be dealt with. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Money could be a little tight this month. This means the usually bargain-oblivious Sagittarian should look for ways to save on endof-the-year holidays. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Examine the facts, and you might find that itโ€™s a wiser move to shift gears and redirect some of your goals before the end of the year. Someone close to you offers good advice. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful that your generosity is not abused. Find out more, both about the special favors you might be asked to grant and who is asking for them. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Youโ€™ve come through a recent rough time in great shape. Congratulations. Now go out and enjoy your wellearned rewards. More good news comes in mid-December. BORN THIS WEEK: You aim for truth, and you usually find it. Your honesty earns you the friendship and respect of others. ยฉ 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
