Just who was behind the hacking of the DNC? The media is now questioning whether it was Russia. Some networks are saying it was a media misfire. Imagine that. Even Rolling Stone magazine (the ownership) — who loves, loves, loves Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton —is questioning the validity of this story about Russian hacking. On the hacking subject, Trump said, "I just want them to be sure [about Russia hacking]. I know more than other people know. I just want them to be sure," referring to the Obama administration. Keep in mind the Obama administration has already deported 35 Russians and their families. No one is saying the Russians are good guys, but let's be sure, especially when the evidence is inconclusive when it comes to interfering in our election. It's very hard to prove who is responsible for hacking in any given situation. Did it happen? I would say the DNC hacking happened. There is evidence that it's true, but hacking happens every day. Did the Russians hack into the DNC? In my opinion, it's questionable, and if they did, was it to control the elections? I found it interesting that in a recent survey, when asked, "Do you trust the news?", 55% of those polled said No, and 16% said it was Iffy. What does

that leave? In the last 18 months the major networks like CNN, MSNBC and the rest have blown their own credibility. Let's face it, the worst media bias of last year was Hillary Clinton. The big deal is the major news networks were not in touch with the frustration of the American people! I watched Meet the Press Sunday morning. The first 37 minutes was chit chat, when they should have been focused on major stories. What are they? As an old reporter, I would say the #1 story is Israel and Obama's stabbing in the back of our faithful ally, Israel. The #2 story is the talk of forming a special commission on Russia interfering in the election and the questionability of it happening. Why we need another commission when we have at least 16 agencies that are capable of investigating is beyond me! On to Israel. Trump has said they have been treated very unfairly by Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, who I lost all respect for during Vietnam. It's been reported that an Israeli official will give the incoming Trump administration proof about the U.S. role as a covert partner in the U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel's settlement in the West Bank. The official said it's be-

coming increasingly clear, based on Arab sources, that this current administration has worked unfavorably to Israel behind the scenes with Palestinians. Israeli officials criticized the Obama administration, who, led by John Kerry and his staff, pushed for U.N. sanctions against Israel. John Kerry has denied any involvement. My question is, with less than three weeks in office, why would Obama stoop to this level and attack our friend, our ally, Israel? So did Obama help push this resolution and help craft it? I'm sure it will come to the surface in time. The fact is, the U.S. abstained on the resolution, allowing it to pass, rather than vetoing it. With friends like Barack Obama and John Kerry, who needs enemies? However, let me leave you with this thought: For anyone familiar with Christianity, it's clear in the Old Testament that the Jewish people are God's chosen people. When we turn our backs on Israel, we better drop to our knees. In closing, let me wish each and every one of you the very best in 2017. Until next week. Good Luck Moving On As the playoff picture shapes up, New York Giants would like to remind you that the Dallas Cowboys haven't won anything worth shouting about yet. The Giants, however, have to know all too well that their plan on offense most closely resembles something you would find on a typical JV high school's squad: have your good quarterback throw passes to your great wide receiver the ENTIRE game or die trying. There is no doubt that Eli Manning is one of the game's all-time great quarterbacks, and Odell Beckham Jr., even if he never catches another

pass, will still be rembered as having the best start of any wide receiver in NFL history. But how long can the Giants go with this game plan? Actually, the better question to ask is how deep can the Giants go in the playoffs with that plan and zero running game. True, there is a certain charm to the Manning-Beckham plan. For one thing, you don't need to be a technical football wiz to understand what is going on there. They're calling the same plays you did when you huddled up in your backyard as a kid: "You get open, and I will throw the ball to you, and then you just outrun everybody and

score. Got it? OK! Break!" For the time being, this strategy has largely worked. That's b ecaus e Odell Beckham Jr. is just that good. He is a game breaker, he is young and healthy, he can catch, he's a fierce competitor, and he's got turbo jets. As long as the Giants' truly superb defense is around, the G-men can get away with this plan. As for Dallas, the team that beat everyone but the Giants, they still have one of the greatest offensive lines in modern times. They don't just give rookie sensation Dak Prescott time to throw ... they give him enough time to drop back and meditate, write a little bit in his journal, eat a yogurt with fruit on the bottom (ya know, the kind you have to stir), call to check in on his mama and decide he needs to buy a house out in Hackensack before throwing a pass. But when he ends up on the short end of a throwback 10-7 game against the Giants, people jump to conclusions. Seven points? Is that all you get for your

money? The question there is whether Dallas fans and Romo-smitten owner Jerry Jones will have the patience to stick with the kid once they're in the playoffs. After all, if you're going to use Romo, the clock is ticking. At best, has about two seasons left before he succumbs to chronic, lifelong pain. But it would seem such a waste of time to try and develop Prescott only to bail on the guy come playoff time. If the franchise is eyeing another dynasty, it'd be foolish to jump off that Patriot-esque potential 10-year train. Dallas should look at Romo as being the best backup quarterback since Johnny Unitas. He can still chip in. We've seen him play long enough to know by now that if he can't drive the Cowboys with a broken back, at least he can polish the fenders. SOUTH CENTRAL TRANSIT EMPLOYEES ADOPT SEVEN CHILDREN “Making A Difference In Our Communities” became a reality this Christmas for two local families. Staff, employees and elves from South Central Transit’s Clinton and Marion County facilities participated in the BCMW and WJBD Radio Adopt-aFamily program. For fifteen consecutive years elves from the SCT organization have adopted, donated, shopped and wrapped gifts for children from the surrounding communities. This year seven children ages six to seventeen years old were adopted from two different families. Each child receives at least one item from the categories listed on their wish list which includes warm clothing, a coat and a toy. Many SCT employees expressed an interest in

ADAPTING TO YOUR NEW FURRY FRIEND Adopting a dog is a wonderful way to bring joy into a home, and adoption may very well save a dog’s life. According to the Humane Society of the United States, between six and eight million pets end up in shelters each year and half of those are unlikely to be adopted. Adjusting to life with a dog is not always easy. Owning a dog is a big responsibility, the scope of which first-time dog owners may not fully grasp until their furry friends arrive at their new homes for the first time. But there are ways to make the transition to dog ownership go smoothly, which should afford you more time to spend with the newest addition to your family. • Prepare your home before Fido’s arrival. While many dogs adjust quickly to their new homes, preparing the home before dogs arrive can make that adjustment easier. Dogs might be nervous and under significant stress when entering a new home for the first time, so prepare the area where the dog will spend most of its time. Remove items that curious pooches may break, and move household cleaners from floor cabinets to high shelves so dogs won’t

ingest anything harmful. Have a crate ready for the dog if you plan to crate him so you don’t have to introduce it after he has already grown acclimated to his new living arrangements. • Prepare and stick to a schedule. Dogs benefit from routine, so before bringing your dog home figure out when you are going to feed and walk him, and which times of day you plan to play with him. Examine your own schedule; recognize you might need to make changes to accommodate your new housemate. Stick to the same daily feeding, walking and socializing schedule, which should acclimate the dog more quickly. Another benefit to adhering to the same schedule is the dog will grow accustomed to relieving itself at the same time each day, reducing the likelihood of potentially messy accidents that no one wants to clean up. • Keep things calm. A hectic household might make it difficult for the dog to adjust, so remain calm and encourage other residents to do the same until the dog seems comfortable in its new surroundings. If necessary, limit visitors and steer clear of dog parks or other places where the dog

might become overexcited. As the dog grows more comfortable, you can invite one or two friends over at a time and start taking the dog to the park as well.

• Take note of irregularities. Some shelter dogs come from abusive situations, and the effects of those situations may still linger. While it’s perfectly

reasonable to use leashes when walking dogs, recognize that some dogs may associate leashes or other objects with past abuse. In such cases, speak with your

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Focusing on a New Year I like to read about and study the lives of successful people. I want to zero in on the one thing that they attribute to their success. I don’t particularly believe in luck or chance, but the great film producer Samuel Goldwyn attributed his success to this, “The harder I work, the luckier

I get.” This is true, but what is success? One of the most brilliant Jewish theologians and successful men of God who ever lived was the apostle Paul. Paul described life as a race – more of a marathon than a sprint. Paul summed up his success in running the race with these words, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but

one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14) Paul said, “One thing I do.” Let’s zero in on the “One thing.” It is a key to success and victory in running the race of life. FORGET THE PAST. Positive achievements and negative failures and experiences can hold us back. Paul was not resting on his laurels. Paul had a great pedigree and advanced learning. He had notable religious zeal and great achieve-

ments. (Philippians 3:3) Paul warned us, “Have no confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:3) Do not put your confidence in human effort. God’s Word tells us that “pride goes before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) How many rest in their past achievements, religious works, and goodness? Paul gives us the key to the race of life, “Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righte ou s n e ss t h rou g h obeying the law; rather I become righteous through faith in Christ.” (Philippians 3:8-9 NLT) Forget your own righteousness and put your faith in Christ’s righteousness and work on the cross. Many times we are held back in the race of

Wednesday, January 4, 2017

life by our past. If defeat or disgrace holds you in its grip, by God’s grace, let go of the past. (Ephesians 2:8-9; II Corinthians 5:17) FORWARD MARCH. Paul points us forward “reaching forward to those things that are ahead.” (Philippians 3:13) What makes us look back? God sent an angel to lead Lot and his wife out of Sodom and Gomorrah before He destroyed it. Lot’s wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt by the fire and brimstone. God has given us marching orders – Forward march! Look to Jesus! (Hebrews 12:2) Look to your home in heaven. Our citizenship is in heaven. (Philippians 3:17-21) I recently saw a group of bikers whizzing by on the highway. One was looking back and came close to a tragic accident as he swerved to avoid running into those in front of him. Don’t look back and don’t let your past hold you back.

By God’s grace we reach forward to the great things God has in store for us. (Jeremiah 29:11; I Corinthians 2:6) This New Year can be your best year ever! FOCUS ON THE GOAL! In high school I lost a race by a split second because I took my eyes off the finish line and looked to see where my competitors were. Sometimes discouragement and distractions will cause us to lose focus. “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14) The ultimate goal and prize in the race of life is Jesus Christ. “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does have life.” (I John 5:12) Focus on Jesus! He is the answer to everything! Paul said that it’s the one thing I do! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

THE IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL HEALTH EXAMS

Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. According the Unity Point Clinic, nearly one-third of the 133 million Americans living with a chronic disease are unaware of the presence of their conditions. Routine physical exams can detect serious illnesses before they do much damage. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.

schedule, and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of potential signs to look for in the future.

Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, dr in king alcohol, etc.), exercise

Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute.

Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms.

• Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer) will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopk i ns S cho ol of Medicine says pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the

blood. It is a measure of ty tests. with a doctor for more Physical exams remain preventative maintenance how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your an important part of tips. body furthest from your staying healthy. Consult heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 IT’S WITH percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are n ot d i s t e n d e d . Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams. Comprehensive Testing In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-densi-

by Samantha Weaver • It was American cartoonist Bill Watterson who, in his much-loved comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes," made the following sage observation: "It's hard to be religious when certain people are never incinerated by bolts of lightning." • 'Tis the season for resolutions — have you made yours yet? If not, here are some of the most common ones you can

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for the New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den-mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in

order to avoid continued misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

new year — and of those who do, a quarter of them give up within two weeks. • In 14th-centur y Europe, not many people kept cats as house pets; they were too much associated with witches. • There is a dispute among literary historians concerning the last words of beloved American poet Emily Dickenson. Some claim that the last thing she said was, "I must go in, the fog is rising." Others claim her last words were rather less poetic: "Oh, is that all it is?" • You're probably aware that many high-rise buildings in the United States don't include a 13th floor,

skipping straight from 12 to 14, just because the superstitious among us consider the number 13 to be unlucky. You might be surprised to learn, though, that China has its own version of the practice: There, buildings skip from the third to the fifth floor. The word for the number four is pronounced almost the same way as the word for death, so the number is considered to be unlucky. . *** Thought for the Day: "History is a vast earlywarning system." — Norman Cousins © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
