SOUTH CENTRAL TRANSIT EMPLOYEES ADOPT SEVEN CHILDREN

SALEM ARMORY EAGLE PRESERVATION PROJECT

“Making A Difference In Our Communities” became a reality this Christmas for two local families. Staff, employees and elves from South Central Transit’s Clinton and Marion County facilities participated in the BCMW and WJBD Radio Adopt-aFamily program. For fifteen consecutive years elves from the SCT organization have adopted, donated, shopped and wrapped gifts for children from the surrounding communities. This year seven children ages six to seventeen years old were adopted from two different families. Each child receives at least one item from the categories listed on their wish list which includes warm clothing, a coat and a toy. Many SCT employees expressed an interest in

Thanks to the efforts of the Salem Historical Commission and many others in the community including the City of Salem, American Legion Post 128, State Representative John Cavaletto, the Illinois Department of Military Affairs, and the cooperation of Shores Builders Inc. who was contracted to demolish the old National Guard Armory, one of the two American Eagles that stood watch over the local installation for decades will find a new home atop a sixfoot high foundation in the design of the bases of the Veterans Memorial and the East Lawn Cemetery sign. That design will closely resemble the actual design of the Armory columns that the Eagles sat atop on South College Street for 79 years since the 1937 dedication. The construction of the new base, which meets the budget limitation guidelines, will happen over the next couple of weeks so that the Armory Eagle can be lifted off of the ground to a more secure position. The Salem Historical Commission plans to do

tributors and program organizers who put their heart into making this program successful year after year. You truly are “Making A Difference In Our Communities.”

Just who was behind the hacking of the DNC? The media is now questioning whether it was Russia. Some networks are saying it was a media misfire. Imagine that. Even Rolling Stone magazine (the ownership) — who loves, loves, loves Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton —is questioning the validity of this story about Russian hacking. On the hacking subject, Trump said, "I just want them to be sure [about Russia hacking]. I know more than other people know. I just want them to be sure," referring to the Obama administration. Keep in mind the Obama administration has already deported 35 Russians and their families. No one is saying the Russians are good guys, but let's be sure, especially when the evidence is inconclusive when it comes to interfering in our election. It's very hard to prove who is responsible for hacking in any given situation. Did it happen? I would say the DNC hacking happened. There is evidence that it's true, but hacking happens every day. Did the Russians hack into the DNC? In my opinion, it's questionable, and if they did, was it to control the elections? I found it interesting that in a recent survey, when asked, "Do you trust the news?", 55% of those polled said No, and 16% said it was Iffy. What does

that leave? In the last 18 months the major networks like CNN, MSNBC and the rest have blown their own credibility. Let's face it, the worst media bias of last year was Hillary Clinton. The big deal is the major news networks were not in touch with the frustration of the American people! I watched Meet the Press Sunday morning. The first 37 minutes was chit chat, when they should have been focused on major stories. What are they? As an old reporter, I would say the #1 story is Israel and Obama's stabbing in the back of our faithful ally, Israel. The #2 story is the talk of forming a special commission on Russia interfering in the election and the questionability of it happening. Why we need another commission when we have at least 16 agencies that are capable of investigating is beyond me! On to Israel. Trump has said they have been treated very unfairly by Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, who I lost all respect for during Vietnam. It's been reported that an Israeli official will give the incoming Trump administration proof about the U.S. role as a covert partner in the U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel's settlement in the West Bank. The official said it's be-

coming increasingly clear, based on Arab sources, that this current administration has worked unfavorably to Israel behind the scenes with Palestinians. Israeli officials criticized the Obama administration, who, led by John Kerry and his staff, pushed for U.N. sanctions against Israel. John Kerry has denied any involvement. My question is, with less than three weeks in office, why would Obama stoop to this level and attack our friend, our ally, Israel? So did Obama help push this resolution and help craft it? I'm sure it will come to the surface in time. The fact is, the U.S. abstained on the resolution, allowing it to pass, rather than vetoing it. With friends like Barack Obama and John Kerry, who needs enemies? However, let me leave you with this thought: For anyone familiar with Christianity, it's clear in the Old Testament that the Jewish people are God's chosen people. When we turn our backs on Israel, we better drop to our knees. In closing, let me wish each and every one of you the very best in 2017. Until next week. HOW TO TREAT MUSCLE CRAMPS AND PREVENT THEIR RECCURRENCE Rare is the athlete who has not had the misfortune of suffering a muscle cramp. Muscle cramps can range from the relatively minor nuisances that can be worked out in a matter of minutes to the more severe cramps that can sideline athletes for an indeterminate period of time. According to the U.S. Nat iona l L ibrar y of Medicine, muscle cramps are often the byproduct of an overused or injured muscle. When a muscle cramps, that muscle is involuntarily contracting, and that contraction can be very painful. Because athletes tend to repeat their motions when performing exercises, it’s not uncommon for athletes to cramp up from time to time. But even men and women who live sedentary lifestyles can suffer from muscle cramps, which the NLM notes could be triggered by alcoholism,

hypothyroidism or kidney failure. Women may suffer muscle cramps when they are pregnant or menstruating. Certain medications may also cause muscle cramps. Men and women concerned about muscle cramps should read the potential side effects of their medications carefully or speak directly with their physicians before taking any medicines that may cause muscle cramps. The online medical resource WebMD notes that medications such as Lasix, a diuretic used to remove fluid from the body, and Crestor, a statin prescribed to adults with high cholesterol, can cause muscle cramps. While dehydration and electrolyte depletion has long been linked to exercise-associated muscle cramps, researchers have been questioning, if not disputing, that link for many years. A 2008 study from South African researchers published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine did not support a link between exerciseassociated muscle cramps and dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Muscle cramps tend to be painful and can occur in the legs, hands, arms, or abdomen or along the rib cage. When cramps occur below the waist, such as in the calf muscle, it can be difficult to stand up. Treating Muscle Cramps Muscle cramps require immediate treatment so sufferers can alleviate the pain and/or discomfort cramps can cause. Massaging the cramped muscle or applying ice or heat can alleviate the cramp

and its associated pain. C alf or hamstring cramps may be alleviated by putting weight on the affected leg and bending the knee slightly. Such cramps may also be treated by sitting or lying down with the affected leg straight out and pulling the foot toward the head. To treat quadriceps cramps (those that occur in the front of the thigh), hold onto something steady and pull the foot of the affected leg back toward the buttock. Preventing Future Cramps One of the most effective ways to prevent future cramps is to listen to your body when it’s sending you signals that it is fatigued. Overused muscles are vulnerable to cramps, so remember to include rest in your exercise regimen so muscles have time to recover. If your body feels overtaxed or fatigued before or during a workout, skip the workout or stop it immediately to reduce your risk of cramps or injury. Deficiencies in certain vitamins can directly or indirectly lead to muscle cramps. While the reasons behind the link between thiamine, pantothenic acid and pyridoxine deficiencies and muscle cramps is unknown, speak with your physician about how to include these vitamins in your diet if you have been exp eriencing mus cle cramps. Cramps can be painful and d e r ai l at h l e te s . Learning to prevent cramps can protect athletes and ensure they are not sidelined from their favorite activities.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL HEALTH EXAMS Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. According the Unity Point Clinic, nearly one-third of the 133 million Americans living with a chronic disease are unaware of the presence of their conditions. Routine physical exams can detect serious illnesses before they do much damage. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.

illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule, and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of potential signs to look for in the future.

Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Normal resting heart rate values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. • Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer) will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a

healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical

PROTECTING YOUR HEART AFTER 50 Heart health should be a concern for people of all ages, but especially so for men and women over 50. That’s because, according to the American Heart Association, even men and women who are free of cardiovascular disease at age 50 are at a significant lifetime risk of developing the disease. But heart disease does not have to be an accepted byproduct of aging. For example, a 2014 study published in the AHA journal Circulation found that maintaining or increasing physical activity after age 65 can improve the heart’s well-being and lower risk of heart attack. In addition to increasing physical activity as they age, older men and women who understand

heart disease and learn to recognize its symptoms have a greater chance of minimizing its effects and lowering their risk of having a heart attack. What are the symptoms of heart disease? Heart disease is a blanket term used to describe a host of conditions, so symptoms vary depending on each individual condition. The following are some of the more widely known conditions and their symptoms: • Hypertension: Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a largely symptomless form of heart disease. The AHA notes that the idea that hypertension produces symptoms such as

difficulty sleeping, facial flushing, nervousness, and sweating is a misconception. Symptoms typically do not alert men and women to the presence of hypertension, highlighting the emphasis men and women should place on routine visits to the doctor’s office, where their blood pressure can be taken. • Heart attack: The symptoms of a heart attack are different than the symptoms of heart disease that may lead to heart attack. The former can be found by visiting www.heart.org. Signs that you may be heading toward a heart attack include undue fatigue, palpitations (the sensation that your heart is skipping a beat or beating

too rapidly), dyspnea (difficulty or labored breathing), chest pain or discomfort from increased activity. • Arrhythmia: Arrhythmia means your heartbeat is irregular, and men and women often mistakenly believe arrhythmia only afflicts those who already have been diagnosed with heart disease or have had a heart attack. But arrhythmia can affect even those men and women who have healthy hearts and no history of cardiovascular disease. Symptoms of arrhythmia can vary greatly, from a single premature beat to a series of premature beats that occur in rapid succession. Arrhythmia that lasts long enough to affect heart function may include symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, fatigue, dizziness, lightheaded-

SIMPLE WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR MENTAL ACUITY Many people know that a combination of a healthy diet and routine exercise is the best way to maintain their physical health. But what about mental well-b eing? Memory lapses are often assumed to be an accepted side effect of aging, but such an assumption is incorrect, as there are many steps men and women can take to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years. • Find time for cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights and reduce their risk for potentially deadly ailments like diabetes and heart disease. But cardiovascular exercise also can boost brain power. Cardiovascular exercise pumps oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and that blood contains glucose that can fuel brain cells. Cardiovascular exercise also strengthens blood vessels, which can help prevent potentially devastating diseases, such as stroke, that can have a

lasting and negative impact on cognitive function. • Find time for friends and family. Many people need no reason to socialize, but those that do can now cite boosting brain function as a great reason to get together with family and friends. Routine socialization can keep a brain sharp by reducing its levels of cortisol, a potentially destructive hormone brought on by stress. Researchers also believe that routine interaction with other people stimulates structures in the brain’s frontal lobe that are likely responsible for planning, decision making and response control. • Squeeze in a nap every so often. Naps can have a reenergizing effect on men and women, but a study from German researchers also found that naps also can improve memory. In the study, researchers divided participants into three groups: people who would stay awake for 60 minutes; people who would sleep for six

minutes; and people who would sleep for 30 to 45 minutes. After the hour was up, participants were given a word recall test, and those who slept performed better on the test than those who hadn’t. But the development that was perhaps most interesting was that those who slept for just six minutes performed just as well on the test as those who slept for far longer, leading researchers to suggest that men and women need not take long naps to improve their memories. • Include fish in your diet. A study from researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that people who eat fish once per week have a 60 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who do not include fish in their weekly diets. Researchers credit this lower risk to DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in both the brain and in fish such as salmon and tuna.

ADAPTING TO YOUR NEW FURRY FRIEND Adopting a dog is a wonderful way to bring joy into a home, and adoption may very well save a dog’s life. According to the Humane Society of the United States, between six and eight million pets end up in shelters each year and half of those are unlikely to be adopted. Adjusting to life with a dog is not always easy. Owning a dog is a big responsibility, the scope of which first-time dog owners may not fully grasp until their furry friends arrive at their new homes for the first time. But there are ways to make the transition to dog ownership go smoothly, which should afford you more time to spend with the newest addition to your family. • Prepare your home before Fido’s arrival. While many dogs adjust quickly to their new homes, preparing the home before dogs arrive can make that adjustment easier. Dogs might be nervous and under significant stress when entering a new home for the first time, so prepare the area where the dog will spend most of its time. Remove items that curious pooches may break, and move household cleaners from floor cabinets to high shelves so dogs won’t ingest anything

harmful. Have a crate ready for the dog if you plan to crate him so you don’t have to introduce it after he has already grown acclimated to his new living arrangements. • Prepare and stick to a schedule. Dogs benefit from routine, so before bringing your dog home figure out when you are going to feed and walk him, and which times of day you plan to play with him. Examine your own schedule; recognize you might need to make changes to accommodate your new housemate. Stick to the same daily feeding, walking and socializing schedule, which should acclimate the dog more quickly. Another benefit to adhering to the same schedule is the dog will grow accustomed to relieving itself at the same time each day, reducing the likelihood of potentially messy accidents that no one wants to clean up. • Keep things calm. A hectic household might make it difficult for the dog to adjust, so remain calm and encourage other residents to do the same until the dog seems comfortable in its new surroundings. If necessary, limit visitors and steer clear of dog parks or other places where the dog might become

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Focusing on a New Year I like to read about and study the lives of successful people. I want to zero in on the one thing that they attribute to their success. I don’t particularly believe in luck or chance, but the great film producer Samuel Goldwyn attributed his success to this, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” This is true, but what is success? One of the most brilliant Jewish theologians and successful men of God who ever lived was the apostle Paul. Paul described life as a race – more of a marathon than a sprint. Paul summed up his success in running the race with these words, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14) Paul said, “One thing I do.” Let’s zero in on the “One thing.” It is a key to success and victory in running the race of life. FORGET THE PAST. Positive achievements and negative failures and experiences can hold us back. Paul was not

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for the New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den-mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in

order to avoid continued misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

resting on his laurels. Paul had a great pedigree and advanced learning. He had notable religious zeal and great achievements. (Philippians 3:3) Paul warned us, “Have no confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:3) Do not put your confidence in human effort. God’s Word tells us that “pride goes before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) How many rest in their past achievements, religious works, and goodness? Paul gives us the key to the race of life, “Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather I become righteous through faith in Christ.” (Philippians 3:8-9 NLT) Forget your own righteousness and put your faith in Christ’s righteousness and work on the cross. Many times we are held back in the race of life by our past. If defeat or disgrace holds you in its grip, by God’s grace, let go of the past. (Ephesians 2:8-9; II Corinthians 5:17) FORWARD MARCH. Paul

points us forward “reaching forward to those things that are ahead.” (Philippians 3:13) What makes us look back? God sent an angel to lead Lot and his wife out of Sodom and Gomorrah before He destroyed it. Lot’s wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt by the fire and brimstone. God has given us marching orders – Forward march! Look to Jesus! (Hebrews 12:2) Look to your home in heaven. Our citizenship is in heaven. (Philippians 3:17-21) I recently saw a group of bikers whizzing by on the highway. One was looking back and came close to a tragic accident as he swerved to avoid running into those in front of him. Don’t look back and don’t let your past hold you back. By God’s grace we reach forward to the great things God has in store for us. (Jeremiah 29:11; I Corinthians 2:6) This New Year can be your best year ever! FOCUS ON THE GOAL! In high school I lost a race by a split second because I took my eyes off the finish line and looked to see where my competitors were. Sometimes discouragement and distractions will cause us to lose focus. “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14) The ultimate goal and prize in the race of life is Jesus Christ. “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does have life.” (I John 5:12) Focus on Jesus! He is the answer to everything! Paul said that it’s the one thing I do! Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
