Craig Sager will no doubt be remembered for his striking attire, but it would be such a shame if all we remember about this great sportscaster was his taste in ties. He now joins the ranks of the immortals, another victim to cancer, another life that seemed to end too suddenly, and the void left is far too noticeable for his family, his friends, and in this case, the fans. In the end, Sager gave his own eulogy, and it is something that bears repeating. Rest in peace, Craig. "When you are diagnosed with a terminal disease like cancer, leu-

kemia, your perception of time changes. When doctors tell you have three weeks to live, do you try to live a lifetime of moments in three weeks? Or do you say, 'To hell with three weeks?' When doctors tell you your only hope of survival is 14 straight days of intense chemotherapy, 24 hours a day, do you sit there and count down the 336 hours? Or do you see each day as a blessing? Time is something that cannot be bought. It cannot be wagered with God. And it is not an endless supply. Time is simply how you live your life. "I'm not an expert on time, or on cancer, or on life itself. I'm a kid from the small Illinois town of Batavia, who grew up on the Chicago Cubs, and made sports his life's work, although there's never been a day where it actually seemed like work. I have run with the bulls in Pamplona. I have r a c e d w it h Ma r i o Andretti in Indianapolis.

I have climbed the Great Wall of China. I have jumped out of airplanes over Kansas. I have wrestled gators in Florida. I have sailed the ocean with Ted Turner. I have swam the oceans in the Caribbean. And I have i nte r v i e we d Gre g g Popovich. Mid-game. Spurs down seven. "If I've learned anything through all of this, it's that each and every day is a canvas, waiting to be painted -- an opportunity for love, for fun, for living, for learning. To those of you out there who are suffering from cancer, facing adversity, I want you to know that your will to live and to fight cancer can make all the difference in the world. The way you think influences the way you feel, and the way you feel determines how you act."

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

A Satisfied Soul I recently saw a video on Facebook of the “Bohemian Rhapsody” played on a 100-year-old fairground organ. Many believe the “Bohemian Rhapsody” to be one of the greatest rock songs of all times. Written by the legendary Queen front-man Freddie Mercury, it was said to be classically inspired, yet years ahead of its time. But what is a Bohemian? Retired Pastor Wilfred Raines taught our adult Sunday School class until the he passed away at the age of 99. I remember the time he referred to his neighbor as a Bohemian. He called him that because Bohemia was his ethnic origin. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary also refers to “Bohemian” as “a vagabond, wanderer, or a person living an unconventional life”. There have always been wanderers who lived an unconventional lifestyle. Mankind was born with an inner thirst to find satisfaction for their soul. Many try to fill the void in many varied ways. Jesus went out of his way to encounter a woman in Samaria who was searching for something to satisfy her soul. (John 4) Scriptures reveal that she had

been married five times and the man she was living with was not her husband. Learn from Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman. THE WELL. “But he needed to go through Samaria . . . Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, therefore, being wearied from his journey, sat thus by the well It was the sixth hour.” (John 4:1-6) In ancient times the patriarchs were well diggers in arid climates where wells were worth their weight in gold. Morning and evening the women would go to draw water. But the Samaritan woman came at noon to draw water — probably to avoid meeting people who knew about her lifestyle. Isaiah prophesied about all mankind’s need for a spiritual well. “Behold, God is my salvation, . . . Therefore, with joy you will draw water from the well of salvation.” (Isaiah 12:1-3) THE WOMAN. The Samaritan woman was shocked that a Jewish man would ask her for a drink. She had three strikes against her: she was a woman in a man’s world, she was a Samaritan whom the Jews despised, and she had been married five times and wasn’t married to the man she was living with. She had searched

far and wide to find satisfaction for her soul. THE WATER. Jesus offered her living water. “If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, ‘give me a drink’; you would have asked him and he would have given you the living water.” (John 4:9-14) Like most people, this woman was looking to the things of this world to satisfy. Jesus said, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never

thirst. But the water I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14) Jesus spoke of the water of life from the well of salvation THE WORSHIP. The woman tried to focus the discussion on religion and the manner of worship. Man was made to worship the true and living God. (Genesis 4:26) Jesus taught us how to worship. We must first deal with the sin issue in our life. (John 4:16-18) Jesus revealed true worship. “God is

(John 4:26) Only Jesus can satisfy your soul. The woman left her water-pot and went into the city and witnessed of Jesus. (John 4:28) THE WORK. Two of man’s earthly needs are food and work. Jesus revealed a greater purpose in John 4:34-35, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me.”

GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM STARTS IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION PLANNED AT LOCAL CHURCH

The 2017 Girl Scout Cookie Program is here and this year marks the celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouts selling cookies. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois (GSSI) kicked off the iconic cookie program January 6-8 during the first Cookie Booth Weekend of the season. At these Cookie Booths, customers can purchase cookies directly from troops set up at local establishments throughout southern Illinois. From Jan. 7 to Jan. 28, Girl Scouts will take orders for the delicious treats — which will be delivered in late February. To get connected to a Girl Scout in your area, please call 800-345-6858 or visit http://bit.ly/ CookieFinder. Customer demand for Girl Scout Cookies following delivery has been high historically, so additional Cookie Booth Weekends will be held from late February through March. In addition to cookie booths and traditional orders, girls will also be able to sell Girl Scout cookies online through a safe, interactive platform called Digital Cookie. Digital Cookie combines traditional sales activities with today’s technology to help girls learn more about online marketing and ecommerce. Girls are able customize their personal sales website and then use e-mail to invite friends and family to order cookies from the comfort of their home. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girlled business in the country and generates immeasurable benefits for girls and their communities. Girls develop five valuable skills:

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. annual celebration is being held on January 15, 2017 at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Centralia, Illinois at 5:00 p.m. The theme for this year’s celebration is The Impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s Dream On America. Their special guest speaker is Mrs. Mel’Danci Robinson of Pearland, Texas. Robinson, known as Danci to most people, was born and raised most of her life in Centralia. She attended elementary school here for several years and then her family relocated to Washington, D.C. where she completed her education. Danci attended Second Baptist Church as a child and sang in the children’s choir, attended Sunday School and church with her grandparents, Joyce and Hubert Garrett (deceased) and her great grandmother Ione B e v i n e au ( d e c e a s e d ) . Mel’Danci is the daughter of Bunny Garrett and Melvin Stalls (deceased). Danci obtained a business certification after graduating from Largo High School in Upper Marlboro, MD. She then went on to obtain her Associate Degree in Social Science from Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, VA. Afterwards she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Leo University, all the while working full time, raising three biological

One of last year's cookie booths goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. They also earn money to support activities, to fund community service and leadership projects, to attend summer camp and to travel to destinations near an far. In addition, proceeds from the program help GSSI recruit and train adult volunteers, provide financial assistance so Girl Scouting is available to all girls, maintain camp properties and develop and deliver quality program activities for girls. The first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts occurred in 1917, when a troop from Muskogee, Oklahoma baked cookies and sold them in the high school cafeteria to fund a service project. Starting from its momentous, first known sale, Girl Scout cookies have gone on to become an indelible part of American pop culture and history. Today, nearly 1 million Girl Scouts participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

The Girl Scout Mission is: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Today’s Girl Scouts not only enjoy camping and crafts, but they also explore math and science and learn about diversity, good citizenship, leadership and teamwork. Girl Scouts helps transform girls into G.I.R.L.s (Gogetters, Innovators, Risktakers, Leaders)™ as they learn essential life skills that will stay with them forever. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois serves 13,000 girls and 4,800 adult volunteers in more than 40 counties in southern Illinois. Girl Scouting has inspired more than 50 million girls and women since its founding in 1912. Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois is a not-for-profit organization supported by various United Ways throughout the region. Girl Scouts is a Proud Partner of United Way. I would love to write about good things... But when I turn the world on in the morning and hear about an 18-year-old disabled boy being kidnapped, held hostage for 48 hours, beaten and tortured by four deranged people, three age 18 and one age 24, and then hear about another shooting with a number of people killed and wounded at a Florida airport, I find it disheartening. And then, of course, what does the major news network wrap itself around but Russia's involvement in our election process! So with all that said, I would again have to say Russia in no way affected or had anything to do with Donald J. Trump being elected. If Russia did interfere with anything it was possibly to help expose the deplorable corruption of Hillary Clinton. It's too bad that it might have — and I stress might have — taken Russia and Julian Assange of WikiLeaks to flush out Hillary's lost emails and her private server, among other corrupt actions, as well as Donna Brazil giving Hillary the questions for a Presidential debate. The hacking and leaks came through the DNC. Obama said recently, "We have to remember Putin is not on our side," again putting the blame for Hillary's loss at Russia's feet. I repeat again, Hillary's loss was her own fault. Hillary Clinton beat herself. It's too bad the extreme liberals can't admit this simple fact. Personally, on this issue, I'm very disappointed in

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) who feels there should be a special committee appointed. I would remind all again there are 16 or 17 federal agencies to dig into these allegations of Russian interference in our election process. John McCain also said the Russians are capable of hacking into our electric grids, playing with our financial stability, and etc. But let me assure everyone we have the same capability and we have done things that are questionable, like stepping in and killing other leaders e.g. Gaddafi of Libya that went beyond hacking. This helped usher in ISIS (thanks to Obama and Hillary Clinton). And of course, there was Saddam Hussein. What I find interesting is John McCain said himself that he learned some things from WikiLeaks, i.e. Julian Assange, and continued to say he felt Barack Obama was a very weak leader. But what is really disturbing to me is Sen. McCain referring to Russia's interference in our election was an act of war. Exactly what is the Senator implying? That we go to war with Russia over inconclusive evidence? The fact remains these allegations are politically driven. The major networks like MSNBC, ABC, NBC, and CNN haven't got anything else to talk about! Hillary lost, Trump won, and that's that, so they continue to spin their lies. But going back to hacking, as I recall it was not so long ago that we — yes we — were caught hacking into German

Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone calls. Germany is a longtime friend and ally of the U.S. Where is the outrage? Now, the stupid question of the week, and by who else but Chuck Todd of MSNBC: "What can we do to retaliate against Russia?" Well, Chuck, we already did. We sent 35 Russians and their families back to Russia, before any conclusive evidence. Everything has been done on speculation! So as the rocket scientists banter about Trump's relationship with Putin, I'll ask one question, and that is, "How and why has Obama had a relationship with Iran?" Let me answer. This country has no greater enemy than Iran. And in my opinion, we should be looking over our shoulder at another country and leader, the itty bitty nutcase in North Korea with his thumb on the red button of a nuclear missile. Next up, what's Hillary's next move? The New York Post is saying it's time for Hillary Clinton to run for Mayor of New York. The idea has been floating around for a few days. I'll close by saying some of New York probably deserves her as much as Chicago (a war zone) and the La La Land of Hollywood, CA. Until next week. speakOUT letters to the editor

Dear Editor, On Friday, December 30, the Chicago Tribune published the third part of a series regarding abuse/neglect and the cover-up of this abuse/neglect in CILAs in the state of Illinois. The third part of this series is about the closure of Jacksonville Developmental Center, and the attempted closure of Murray Center. It is on the front page of the Tribune, a Murray resident is pictured on the front page, and other pictures of Murray residents are printed along with the three page article. It begins detailing the auction of developmentally disabled individuals at the Jacksonville C enter with providers

“bidding on which individuals they wanted. This is of course appalling, but very telling of the mindset of the Department of Human Services under the previous administration. The story then highlights the attempted closure of Murray Center, and how the Murray Parents' Association, the Murray staff, community members, and surrounding communities rallied together to “save Murray Center. The story also confirms everything the MPA and several legislators said was happening during the closure attempt: the lies and cover-up by the Department of Human Services. The story also details the move of a Murray resident

and the tragic results. Since everyone worked so hard to keep Murray open for our special loved ones I want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to see the article. It can be found by using the following information below: http://www.chicagotribune. com/news/watchdog/grouphomes/ All three parts of the story will come up and if you scroll down you will find the story about Murray as well as a video about a Murray resident. You can also Google “Chicago Tribune, click on the Chicago Tribune link and type in the Search block “Suffering in Secret and the Murray story will come up. The Tribune reporters spent over two years finding and documenting all the information in the story. It is all facts, and although so much more happened during the closure attempt we are grateful that finally the truth is getting out. All along the MPA

knew the state officials involved in the closure attempt were being dishonest with us, and we are once again so grateful the community and staff worked so hard to keep Murray Center open.

Cavaletto. “There are plenty of laws on the books already and we should only pass more laws if absolutely necessary. The most important bill we should be working on is a balanced budget, added Cavaletto who serves on the Appropriations – Public Safety Committee. Over this 99th General Assembly (2015-2016) Rep. Cavaletto was the Chief sponsor of 28 bills and Cosponsor of 50 more. Of the 28 Chief bills, the four that became law included the Animal Disease Lab building transfer to Kaskaskia College to benefit the Agriculture Education programs; a change in the teacher licensing guidelines to help Centralia High School’s vocational educa-

tion program; and a debt limitation bill to benefit Sandoval School District’s ability to build new school facilities already approved by the local residents. The bill awaiting the Governor’s signature includes language to extend the deadline on selling bonds for the Sandoval school project by 5 years to 2022. Rep. Cavaletto also sponsored ten House Resolutions honoring people of distinction like Dr. Bingham of Effingham and communities and groups in the 107th district l i k e G r e e n v i l l e ’s Bicentennial, Salem’s 150th Anniversary on becoming incorporated as a city, and The Abraham Lincoln Presenters Convention in

Shimkus said. “If we ever had a chance to roll back job-killing regulations, streamline government and reduce the burden on average Americans, now is the time. I look forward to working together with President-elect Donald Trump and my colleagues on both sides of Capitol Hill to keep the promise to make America great again.â€? In the 115th Congress, Shimkus will continue to

191 NEW LAWS IN ILLINOIS IN 2017 On January 1, 191 new laws went into effect in Illinois. One is a law sponsored by Representative John Cavaletto on behalf of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to promote economic growth in Illinois with the expansion of hunting of game birds. One bill passed during the ‘Veto Session’ in November to help Sandoval School District 501 in November awaits the governor’s signature. “I only introduce legislation brought to me by constituents. I call it the ‘Lincoln Policy’ because that was Abraham Lincoln’s philosophy when he was a state representative in the Illinois House of Representatives, said Rep.

Vandalia in 2015. Several bills introduced to help clarify grandparents’ rights who are raising grandchildren and other bills to fight waste, fraud and abuse by putting a photo on LINK cards never made it out of committee for votes by the House. The Representative plans to keep fighting for these issues and reintroduce the same or similar legislation in the 100th General Assembly to begin January 11. “My priority continues to be creating good paying jobs for our area so there are more tax payers instead of raising taxes on those who are already stretched to the limits, Cavaletto added.

he American Red Cross has a severe winter blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for blood and platelet donors to make a donation appointment now and help save patient lives. Hectic holiday schedules for many regular blood donors contributed to about 37,000 fewer donations in November and December than what was needed. Snowstorms and severe weather have also impacted donations. Nearly 100 blood drives were forced to cancel in December, resulting in more than 3,100 blood donations going uncollected. “Blood and platelet dona-

by Samantha Weaver • It was award-winning American novelist Ann Patchett who made the following sage observation: "The question is whether or not you choose to disturb the world around you, or if you choose to let it go on as if you had never arrived." • The world's smallest city block can be found in the small town of Dothan, Alabama. Bordered by

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A hectic period begins to wind down. Take time to draw some deep breaths and relax before getting into your next project. A long-absent family member makes contact. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to move forward with a new challenge that suddenly dropped in your lap. But you’d be wise to take this one step at a time to allow new developments to come through. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re almost ready to make a commitment. A lingering doubt or two, however, should be resolved before you move ahead. An associate could provide important answers. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still the watchword as you move closer toward a decision about a new situation. If you act too fast, you might miss some vital warning signs. Go slowly and stay alert. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your new goal looks promising, and your golden touch does much to enhance its prospects for success. In your private life, Cupid does his best to make your new relationship special. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That impatient side of yours is looking to goad you into moving before you’re ready to take that big step. Stay calm and cool. Let things fall into place before you act. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A legal matter you hoped could finally be settled could be a pesky problem

for a while, until all the parties agree to stop disagreeing with each other. Be patient. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Partnerships -- personal or professional -- which began before the new year take on new importance. They also reveal some previously hidden risks. So be warned. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your associates are firmly on your side, and that persistent problem that has caused you to delay some activities should soon be resolved to your satisfaction. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Favorable changes continue to dominate, and you should be responding positively as they emerge. Someone wants to become more involved in what you’re doing. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A friend wants to share a secret that could answer some questions you’ve wondered about for a long time. Meanwhile, travel aspects continue to be strong. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Stay on your new course despite socalled well-meaning efforts to discourage you. Rely on your deep sense of self-awareness to guide you to do what’s right for you. BORN THIS WEEK: You have the capacity to meet challenges that others might find overwhelming, and turn them into successful ventures. © 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Appletree, College and Troy streets, the block was once home to a single two-story building measuring 38 feet long and 27 feet wide. • Most Americans are familiar with graham crackers — they're a favorite childhood snack. But have you ever wondered what they're made of? The obvious answer is "graham flour" — but

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

what is that? It's just flour made from whole wheat. This type of flour was named after a 19thcentury Presbyterian minister named Sylvester Graham, who promoted the snack as a digestive aid and a cure for alcoholism. • You might be surprised to learn that, although Charles Goodyear received a patent for vulcanized rubber in 1844, the Maya were creating objects with rubber 3,000 years before that. • The quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is the most widely distributed tree in North America (as well as the state tree of Utah). Groves

of them can be found in high altitudes as far south as Guanajuato, Mexico, and as far north as the Brooks Range of mountains in northern Alaska. Most people don't realize, however, that the groves are not made up of separate trees; all the visible trunks are part of a single organism, genetically identical and sharing the same root system. and claws PAWS A Page Dedicated To Our Four-Footed Fuzzy Children.

Owner Wants Cat Back DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two years ago, my husband and I took in a beautiful orange cat, “Tiger,” when a friend became too ill to care for him. We weren’t sure we wanted a pet — I suffer from dander and dust allergies — but we decided to give it a try. We picked him up on Christmas Eve at the airport after he was flown from Atlanta, a wide-eyed, meowing, anxious ball of fur. As soon as we got home he shot out from the carrier and under the sofa, where he hid for almost three weeks, sneaking out at night to eat and use the litter box.

Tiger gradually got used to his new home, and we got used to him, and now we can’t imagine life without him. He’s the best Christmas present we’ve ever received. Here’s the problem: Our friend has recovered and wants Tiger back, but I can’t bear to let him go. What would you suggest? — Charles H., Dallas DEAR CHARLES: We become more deeply attached to our pets than we realize, often grieving more when we lose them than we do for many humans. Returning a pet to its original owner can be emotionally difficult. I have friends who actually worked out a joint custody agreement, with a visitation schedule for their dogs after their relationship ended. It sounds like Tiger’s owner also loves and misses him, and because you’re halfway across the country, there’s a good chance you
