Congresses, Shimkus successfully lead a bipartisan update of the Toxic Substances Control Act – a chemical safety law affecting virtually ever y American consumer. The new law, praised by industry and environmental groups alike, takes a thoughtful approach to protecting people across the country from unsafe chemical exposure by making long needed improvements to the way EPA tests and regulates over 85,000 different chemicals and substances. “John’s work to enact the most meaningful update to our chemical safety laws in forty years showcase the tenacity and legislative expertise he will bring to bear as he takes the helm of the Subcommittee on E n v i r o n m e n t ,” s a i d Congressman Greg Walden (R, Oregon-02), who chairs the full Energ y and Commerce Committee. “He has been a dedicated member of this committee and the future is bright at the Subcommittee on Environment. I know John will work towards enacting solutions that capitalize on our energy abundance and that deliver affordable, reliable electricity, and jobs to folks around the country.” In addition to chairing the Environment Subcommittee, Shimkus will also serve on the Health Subcommittee, which will work to replace Obamacare, as well as on the Energy Subcommittee and the Communications and Technology Subcommittee.

A Year of Stunners Say what you will about 2016, but if you thought it was boring you have got to get your head checked. It was a year of stunning achievements. Without question, the highlight being the Chicago Cubs finally winning a World Series, ending the Hack Wilson era. It was a year that saw LeBron James cement his all-time superstar legacy by bringing a championship back to Cleveland, a year that saw Peyton Manning leave on top. The Golden State Warriors did their best Seattle Mariners impression, setting the mark for the best regular season record, then not winning it all at the end. Villanova kept Philadelphia basketball front and center, taking the NCAA tournament. Alabama continues to roll in college football, and Penn State returned to the good graces of the game. The

Joe Madden's deft hand at managing the brilliant Theo Epstein Cubs. There were some events more recognized as someone's loss than another's win: Jordan Spieth's collapse, allowing Danny Willet to add a green jacket to his wardrobe being the foremost example thereof. Tyson Fury, who acts like a loser, wobbled around the ring to beat Vladimir Klitschko for what used to be the well-respected heavyweight belt. Tom Brady, in one of the stupidest suspensions in NFL history, missed four games. (Way to market your stars, Goodell.) And then there were those who slipped this vale of tears. Giants like Ali, Arnie and Gordie are gone. Legends from the past century, their names will forever remain in the upper echelon of sporting statistics, men of exceeding valor both in their respective sports and away from the cheers of the crowd in gainful retirement. They will be missed, but this year, one of the greatest in recent sports history, will not be forgotten.
Pittsburgh Penguins only need one more for the thumb after winning their fourth Stanley Cup. Army beat Navy. There were individual achievements. Jaromir Jagr moved past Mark Messier for all-time points in the NHL. Andy Murray finally broke through to become the top-seeded player in men's tennis. Kobe Bryant put up 60 points in his final game. Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams dominated woman's tennis. Jimmie Johnson won his record-tying seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup title. Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold medal, Max Scherzer struck out 22 in a game, and Conor McGregor conquered the rest of the world. If anyone is wondering how Trump got elected to be the 45th President of our great country, I would suggest that, along with Hillary Clinton missteps, it has a lot to do with the good ol' boys and girls club, everyone from Dick Durbin, Michael Madigan, and Cory Booker to John Lewis, just to name a few. Off the top of my head I could easily name 100 Republicans and Democrats. Over 50% of the American people are fed up with the corruption, the bullying, the lying, the cheating and the long-term politicians that, in my opinion, should have been voted out years ago, and others who are just puppets. Let's begin with this week's confirmation hearing, which I found disgraceful, starting with Cory Booker. In Mr. Booker's own words, he said, "Today I broke with Senate tradition and testified against the nomination of one of my colleagues, Senator Jeff Sessions." Remember, leading up to the 2016 Presidential elections, Booker had endorsed Hillary Clinton. In my own words, I would say Booker tried to trash Jeff Sessions, Trump's pick for Attorney General, as a coming out party for his run in the 2020 Presidential election, in typical good ol' boy fashion, to try to intimidate or control. Booker, a former Newark mayor, became the first senator to testify against another's nomination to the Cabinet. For anyone that saw it, this confirmation hearing just used Jeff Sessions to beat up Donald Trump. But the ugly truth about Democrat Cory Booker, New Jersey's golden boy, is Booker has been in Washington posting selfies with his fellow good ol' boys, vowing to reform the criminal justice system. Yet months after he first entered the Senate, the New Jersey Comptroller alleged that under Booker's watch, corruption ran rampant
at a publicly funded water treatment and reservoir management agency. Folks, that's just a start! Then, of course, there was the confirmation hearing on Rex Tillerson, Trump's pick for Secretary of State. Senator Marco Rubio, (R-FL) questioned Mr. Tillerson on Russia and Vladimir Putin, and Rubio (another good ol' boy) made a total fool of himself, actually criticizing Tillerson for his hesitation to label Putin a war criminal, and for his "inability to cite that which is globally accepted." But when questioned about a Muslim registry, Tillerson stated he did not support a registry targeting any particular group. And so the hearings went, in much of the questioning. It appeared to be another Bash Trump session. Many of those questioning were beating their chests and they showed little concern for the real issues. I'd love to buy them for what they're worth and sell them for what they think they're worth. These confirmation hearing were nothing but a clown show. Ne x t up, C N N and BuzzFeed's latest fake news: "Russia has information to blackmail Donald Trump." Again, the latest attempt to stop President-Elect Trump turned out to be fake, fake, fake. Sorry, folks, I would have done the same thing to the CNN reporter asking Trump a question, except I would not have been as nice. In my opinion, CNN (Clinton News Network) has lost all credibility. So why aren't they reporting the real news, like Barack Obama, eight days before Trump steps into the White House, sent 4,000 American troops to the Polish border facing Russia. There was an agreement with NATO to do this very thing 12 months ago! Why would Obama do it now, except to flex his muscles! Is
this another retaliation for Hillary Clinton losing the election? What a man! What a man! What a man! But what I find almost unforgiveable is this week congressman John Lewis said he would not accept Donald Trump as President because of the Russian involvement in the election Folks, no one changed the course of this election except the good ol' boys and girls club (Hillary Clinton and the DNC) and fed up Americans. For John Lewis to say Donald Trump's election was not legitimate is a totally irresponsible statement. Rich Lowry said Sunday morning of John Lewis, "Congressman Lewis is working through his grief." And with that said, I agree. However, I also recognize John Lewis is an icon in the civil rights movement, and no one can take that away from him. But on to the good ol' boys and girls club. In Springfield, IL, I am sorry to report it's not a new day. Democrat Michael Madigan was voted in for the 17th term — yes, 17 terms — to serve once again as the Speaker of the House. Now if this isn't good ol' boy mentality I don't know what is. And of course we all know how well it's worked in Illinois! The same way it's worked in Washington the last eight years. In closing, I got a postcard from a reader in Salem this week that hit the nail on the head. She wrote, "This mentality could perhaps explain how President-elect Trump won the nomination." Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. must repent of their sins and tell my people to ask me! I have so much to give them but they must ask.” Jesus taught us to persevere in prayer. To ask, seek, and knock. A GOOD, GOOD FAT H E R W H O ANSWERS PRAYER. “Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread will give him a serpent.” (Matthew 7:9-10) Of course not! How much more will our good, good Father give us what is good “Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3:20) David declared, “In the day when I cried out, you answered me and made me bold with strength in my soul.” (Psalm 138:3) A GOOD, GOOD FAT H E R W H O ACCORDS HIS CHILDREN GIFTS. Jesus said, “If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him.” (Matthew 7:11) Think about this — if you have committed your life to Christ, you are really his child! Our
Father delights to give good things to his children. Luke tells us that the greatest gift he gives, along with his only begotten Son, is the gift of the Holy Spirit. “How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.’ (Luke 11:13) Have you asked for the gift of the Holy Spirit? Expect a good, good Father to give Him to you and the gifts of the Spirit. (I Corinthians 12:31) But Jesus adds this caveat, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12) A good, good Father requires us to live like a child of God — to walk in love. We have a good, good Father who gave his only begotten son. “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

When Is It Time to Say Goodbye? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As my dog gets older, I’ve been thinking more about when the time comes that we’ll lose her. She doesn’t have serious health issues now, just a little arthritis, but I wonder what I would do if she approached the end of her life and were suffering. How do you know when it’s “time”? There is always such love and trust toward us humans, how do we know when the lack of quality of life outweighs our desire to care for and protect man’s best friend? by Samantha Weaver • It was Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the 34th president of the United States, who made the following sage observation: "I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared,
and then he is gone." • The biggest polar bear ever recorded weighed a whopping 2,209 pounds — roughly the weight of 12 adult men. • Russian health authorities are very familiar with cold-weather injuries — and fatalities. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your batteries should be fully recharged by now, making you more than eager to get back into the swing of things full time. Try to stay focused so that you don’t dissipate your energies. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to charge straight ahead into your new responsibilities. But you’ll have to paw the ground a little longer, until a surprise complication is worked out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Rival factions are pressuring you to take a stand favoring one side or the other. But this isn’t the time to play judge. Bow out as gracefully as possible, without committing yourself to any position. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Reassure a longtime, trusted confidante that you appreciate his or her words of advice. But at this time, you need to act on what you perceive to be your own sense of self-interest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You need to let your warm Leonine heart fire up that new relationship if you hope to see it move from the “just friends” level to one that will be as romantic as you could hope for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) There’s still time to repair a misunderstanding with an honest explanation and a heartfelt apology. The sooner you do, the sooner you can get on with other matters. are the only times that have their own names. The origin of the term "midnight" is obvious, since it occurs in the middle of the night, but how did 12 p.m. come to be called noon? The word itself is derived from the Latin word "nono," which means "nine." Still doesn't seem to make sense? Here's how lexicographers trace the evolution of the word: If hours are counted from dawn — roughly 6 a.m. — instead of midnight, nine hours into the day would be 3 p.m., or midafternoon. Lacking accurate portable timepieces, ancient Romans used the term "nono" to
progress toward your goal. Use this time to re-examine your plans and see where you might need to make some significant changes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some missteps are revealed as the cause of current problems in a personal or professional partnership. Make the necessary adjustments and then move on. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Jupiter’s influence helps you work through a pesky problem, allowing your naturally jovial attitude to re-emerge stronger than ever. Enjoy your success. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Set aside your usual reluctance to change, and consider reassessing your financial situation so that you can build on its strengths and minimize its weaknesses. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some recently acquired information helps open up a dark part of the past. Resolve to put what you’ve learned to good use. Travel plans continue to be favored. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Act on your own keen instincts. Your strong Piscean backbone will support you as someone attempts to pressure you into a decision you’re not ready to make. refer to the midafternoon in a general sense. Over time, as the pronunciation of the word shifted to "noon," the meaning of the word shifted to "midday."
